[ubuntu-x] Lucid i845 testing results

2010-08-17 Thread Greg Bair
Last time I wrote, I mentioned that when Ubuntu updated to the 2.6.36-24
kernel, that when login screen started, the screen would alternate
between shutting the monitor off and a black screen with a mouse cursor.

I have the xorg-intel package from the raof/aubergine ppa.

This morning, I applied the DRI workaround and removed the nomodeset
from grub.

So far, so good. Going at about 2 hours now with no freeze.

lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation
82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)

Hope this helps,

Greg

I am not sure if this is related to new xorg version but after a recent update

Hey Folks,

I am Fahad Fazil doing my eleventh grade in kerala . I have been using

Almost all the school in india is running on pirated (except some) copies of
windows. All theses is because that the textbooks are published in a way
that they only support windows and they have not even heard of linux. Im
study C++ now and when i got the text book , it was full of compilers for
windows and i dont use windows. So I had to ifind a compiler for ubuntu and
did so. So we should do something to promote ubuntu(linux) in schools and
publish textbboks based on ubuntu (linux)

No that is because, Microsoft provides Windows as a complete package to
schools free of cost, and in many cases they also provide hardware for it.
If I am not wrong, there is tie up of Wipro-Microsoft to provide Hardware
and software to many schools. With such offers being made to schools, I dont
really see why schools will reject especially since they dont usually have
to deal with all the drawbacks of Windows. Occasionally, they will
re-install whenever their system gets effected by virus.

However, my niece studies in 5th std in Bangalore and she told me that they
use Fedora in their school with KDE as desktop environment. So I guess we
just need better packaging of Gnu/Linux based distribution for schools which
will work out of the box after installation and back it up with good local
support for schools. SchoolOS is a initiative to solve the first part of the
problem. Local GLUGs should take it up as a duty to spread SchoolOS in their
locality.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Advice to those new to Ubuntu (and its derivatives)

2010-08-17 Thread m k
On Sun, Aug 15, 2010 at 8:40 PM, Ramnarayan.K ramnaraya...@gmail.comwrote:

 Hi

Am posting this with some trepidation since its not about Ubuntu per
se and seeks to provide an alternative to new / first time users who
are having trouble with Plain vanilla Ubuntu but here goes

One of the problems with The Vanilla (meaning default / orginal / un
enhanced / un tweaked) version of Ubuntu is that is does not come with
the bells and whistles and sometimes has even an arm missing. So it
makes it difficult to enjoy and be productive from day 1. After this
vanilla install one has to spend a few hours / days / weeks (depending
on band width access) to get the system up and running to optimal .
[and if it is months - like me then its already time for the next
Ubuntu to be released ;-) ]

Having a big fat internet connection does change the situation, its
then possible to make Ubuntu do what ever you want. However for those
who don't , esp. those who live in poor internet areas or who are not
familiar with using the repos and manipulating them i have a few
 suggestions.

 1. Install the mediubuntu repos
 (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu#Adding%20the%20Repository)
and try and add whatever you need.

 2. Look for and install a derivative of Ubuntu - like Linux Mint
 (http://www.linuxmint.com/) and Ultimate edition
 (http://ultimateedition.info/)

Linux Mint is probably the easiest and the best and the cleanest. It
has a software manager that will do to your bidding in a manner more
efficient than Ubuntu. It won't ask you too many questions - by
default almost all the popular media formats works , for heaven's sake
even flash works easily. Subsequently adding closed source software
like skype, googleearth etc is simply one touch from the Software
Manager (which allow you to search while installation is going on in
the background). The Best is that its Ubuntu all the way, whatever you
could / can do in Ubuntu you can do here, it can use the default
Ubuntu repos and encourages you to do so.

Ultimate Edition is another derivative - its a totally rehashed
version of Ubuntu and packs in everything one wants and then more -
some what like an Ubuntu Knoppix (if you have used knoppix you know
what i mean) the Ultimate DVD is just that Ultimate - one you install
this you will not need the net for very much for a long long while
(huh thats like a dream or what)

Last for those of you who want to build your system and know what goes
in then there is nothing like normal Ubuntu. which of course is itself
a far cry from Debian or Gentoo

so why is 64 bit not recommended for daily usage ??

 2.6.32-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 05:14:15 UTC 2010 x86_64
 GNU/Linux

and is experiencing strange system freezes - the system just locks up -
nothing works not even Ctrl+alt+backspace and has to power off to get the
machine back to boot and then it gets stuck in checking disk and after a
long long while it gets to login screen

 **
 look forward to advise

 ram

I have switched over to from 32 bit to 64 bit since the launch of
Maverick Meerkat.
So far have not faced any major issues. Only problem which I faced was
that google earth does not run on 64 bit.
Probably the issue is of RAM, one should have at least 3-4 GB RAM to run
64 bit systems. It is worth a try if you have the hardware. I have a

to fall back on 32 bit.

Also there are many programs just not available in 64 bit.

[Ubuntu-QC] Partage de fichiers Lucid Lynx

2010-08-17 Thread linuxbbas

PARTAGE-LAPTOP*;
un dossier, et ce partage est *PARTAGE-BUREAU*;

bureau, tu dois saisir le mot de passe *supermotdepasse*;

ordinateur. Si on veut pingner l'ordinateur 192.168.0.145, on écrit :
ping 192.168.0.145

Mon ordinateur principal s'appelle gilbert-desktop. Mon laptop s'appelle
gilbert-laptop.

rappelle l'ordinateur auquel on veut accéder.)

sshfs gilb...@gilbert-laptop: ~/gilbert.laptop

#!/bin/bash
sshfs gilb...@gilbert-laptop: ~/gilbert.laptop

Gilbert

Easy steps to make your product fail:

1) Give it a name only the developers would understand in its proper
context, e.g. GIMP.
2) ???
3) Profit!

*cough* Sorry.

2) Promote the product via this name (or codename).
3) Wonder why the general public (general ignorant audience) don't
jump on board when they think the name sounds unprofessional or just
plain stupid (e.g. GIMP).
4) Resist all urges by your community to change the name as there's
nothing wrong with it.

If you read this far, thank you. The point I think I'm trying to make
is that Canonical seems to be wandering further and further off into
obscure yet geeky-cool naming schemes. Let's look at them shall we?

Warty Warthog. Fine. It was warty. Makes sense, warthog. Warts. Fine.
Hoary Hedgehog. Familiar animal, hairy so mature. OK I guess.
Breezy Badger. Easy breezy. Nice and simple. Badger is a dependable
creature. Good name.
Dapper Drake. Dapper, polished. Good. LTS. Drake? It's a male duck.
Umm. They like to gang rape female ducks? Or do you mean a flying
dragon?
Edgy Eft. Edgy, damned right it was. WTF is an Eft?
Feisty Fawn. Bit musty and mouldy? Grovelling about on the floor? Oh,
wait, you mean eager? And a deer? An eager deer?
Gutsy Gibbon. Gutsy, fine. Strong. Gibbon, fine, intelligent, mobile,
sociable etc.
Hardy Heron. Hardy, strong, LTS. Good name for an LTS. Heron, patient.
Good name.
Intrepid Ibex. Breaking new ground, Ibex is a call back to Ubuntu
origin. Good name.
Jaunty Jackalope. OK, here we go. A fictional creature that's a bit
sure of itself.
Karmic Koala. Karmic as in it has reached nirvana? I'm not sure Karmic
was /that/ good. Koalas eat eucalyptus; was that a package introduced?
Elastic computing thing?
Lucid Lynx. Clear-minded wildcat. Umm. Not exactly a dependable
creature for an LTS, then.
Maverick Meerkat. Advert tie-in. Simples. Was any new ground broken? I
can't really think of any, indicator was introduced in Lucid. Oh wait,
the window button positions. That's ground-breaking, obviously.
Natty Narwhal. Oh come on.

From WordNet (r) 2.0 :

  dapper
adj : marked by smartness in dress and manners; a dapper young
man; a jaunty red hat [syn: dashing, jaunty, natty,
raffish, rakish, smart, spiffy, snappy, spruce]

Dapper, Jaunty, Natty? Well, at least that's the codenames for R and S
sorted (I'm going to bet now on Raffish and Spiffy).

From WordNet (r) 2.0 :

  narwhal
n : small arctic whale the male having a long spiral ivory tusk
   [syn: narwal, narwhale, Monodon monoceros]

Monodon. Monoceros. Those are good names. Sound powerful, hints of
rhinoceros (and Ubuntu again). Oh, wait, we've already had M in 10.10.
Raffish Rhinoceros for 13.04, anyone? Nah, rhinoceros is too well
known. It would have to be something like Raffish Roach (that's right,
it's a fish, but people will think it's a cockroach. Perfect!).

Enough ranting. I'll leave you with this:

From The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48 :
  narwhal
it is called also sea unicorn, unicorn fish,
   and unicorn whale.

Jonathon

Oh, if 13.04 is Raffish Roach do I get a prize?

It's Ubuntu 10.04. Look at the CD, it doesn't say Lucid _anywhere_ on it.

Note the release announcement even plays down the name calling it just
a 'codename'.

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2010-April/000133.html

We in the Ubuntu community should be encouraging people to use the
version numbers for releases and the codenames for development
versions. However _within_ our community it's not unusual to continue
using the names because we build an affection for them, having worked
on them for months and sporting t-shirts depicting the animals.

released it will be Ubuntu 11.04 take a look at the Lucid desktop CD,
there is no mention of Lucid or Lynx (but if you open it up and look
inside the pocket there is a dotty Lynx image).
On a point of detail the window button positions were in Lucid, you
haven't seen everything in Maverick, I think the multi-touch stuff and
unity might qualify as somewhat ground breaking though.

I suppose it comes down to your market. Thinking about it, mobile
phones are consumer items. It's a Nokia or a Samsung, not a Symbian or
Brew or Android or Windows Mobile. Or is it? They are definitely
promoting Android phones (I probably don't need to talk about iPhone

iPhone (iOS) 4. Perhaps the key point is these companies (Google and

improvements over the last. Linux generally has incremental
improvements, so there's not an obvious wow moment (just look at the
development of Aqua and Aero and compare to GNOME). Anyone I've shown
Ubuntu to likes Compiz, not the OS, but this is not what is marketed
and certainly not why most of *us* use Linux. The interface also stays
the same for the vast majority of users after an upgrade - no new
theme, no new effects, just the same as before. Maybe we need a hint
after an upgrade: New themes are available! Would you like to view
them?, taking them to Appearance.

I think this goes back to a discussion from a while back to do with
marketing to a specific target audience (business, school, home). Each
want different things - but until we start to think of it in that way,
and identify the market for Ubuntu, it won't see a great deal more
adoption outside of the Linux community; while taking Red Hat and SuSE
market share can be profitable for Canonical, it's not exactly why I
spend my time hacking away (in my own small way).

What was my point? No idea. I've gone way, way off topic.

well depends how often you like your releases. If you go for daily
updates of the development version of Ubuntu then you will see
incremental improvements (and breakages) if you go for the stable final

When releasing 10.04.1 new ISO, anybody known a right date?

2010-08-17 Thread Hammer Attila
Hy,

This questions is not ubuntu-accessibility specific problem. Anybody
known what happened with 10.04.1 maintained release?
In jul, the release date delayed with August 12TH. Now, in Lucid
schedule I see august 17TH date. This is right?
In launchpad, the 10.04.1 milestones I see following information:
Project:
 Ubuntu

Series:
 Lucid

Version:
 ubuntu-10.04.1

Code name:
 None

Expected:
 2010-08-12

Active:
Yes. Drivers can target bugs and blueprints to this milestone.

Ofcourse, I known if I installing all updates, my system is updated with
10.04.1 version, but some weeks later I need the actual 10.04.1 official
CD ISO files my work. :-):-)

Launchpad link with containing august 12TH date:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+milestone/ubuntu-10.04.1

Lucid schedule wiki page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidReleaseSchedule

Note:
I looked Lucid daily live CD's, and I see following interesting think
after I extracted the compressed squashfs file system, because I would
like do an actual accessible Lucid version with containing latest updates:
In the extracted file system /boot directory not have
vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic kernel. This is valid? I mounted verify
purpose the compressed squashfs file system with following command:
mount casper/filesystem.squashfs mnt -o loop
When I list the mnt/boot directory, I not see a kernel in boot directory
(vmlinuz-2.6.32*). When I see this, I used the 2010-08-15 daily live CD.
This is already fixed?

OK, it seems that if you have the package sysv-rc-conf, you can use
sysv-rc-conf to enable and disable services on startup. Try
sysv-rc-conf --list cups to see whether or not it is enabled.

Re: Ubuntu-docs updates for Lucid

2010-08-17 Thread David Planella
El dg 15 de 08 de 2010 a les 10:54 +0100, en/na Matthew East va

 Dear all,

We haven't yet released any update to the Lucid documentation, which
was discussed on this thread earlier in the year.

I've now got around to uploading new pot templates to Launchpad with
the fixes to the bugs that we'd like to fix.

I'd like to invite the translators to go ahead and translate the new
strings. The changes are in two pot files:

 https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/ubuntu-docs/+pots/ubuntu-docs-musicvideophotos
 https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/ubuntu-docs/+pots/ubuntu-docs-serverguide

Thanks for the work on this, Matthew!

It looks like there are 10 new strings in musicvideophotos and 22 new
strings in serverguide. I'd suggest that we leave 4 weeks or so for
translations to be updated. That would mean aiming for a translation
export on or around 13 September 2010 and an upload to lucid-proposed
shortly after that. The updated translations would then be available
in the next language pack update thereafter.

Sounds like a good plan. I think we could schedule a new Lucid language
pack release targeted at when the ubuntu-docs package hits
lucid-updates.

What we could do right now is to set a date for the deadline to accept
translations to the docs and by extension to the language pack. The
proposed date on the 13th of September looks good to me.

If we agree on that, we should probably send a separate e-mail with an
announcement for the update, mentioning the new templates being
uploaded, and the translation deadline for docs + other translations in
the language packs.

What do you say?

Let me know if you envisage any problems with this. If a shorter time
can be achieved for translations, please let me know.

Of course translators can also add any other translations which they
would like to any ubuntu-docs templates: i.e. if a particular template
is incomplete in your language, please go ahead and complete it and
the new translations will also be imported.

As a side note, I think it would be useful to sync such updates with
point releases on LTSs. I'm not sure about the status of the discussion
on stable release updates of Ubuntu Docs, but I think it would be useful
to put it as an agenda item on a meeting or on a roadmap for the docs
team.

Thanks.

Regards,
David.

Let me start by thanking everyone who has either translated ClassBot

have been working hard to try and implement as many suggestions as
possible. I have pushed an updated .pot template that:
   1) Removes the double are issue that somehow appeared
   2) Does not have split sentences being translated
   3) Adds a few comments for translators explaining what things are
(I'm still trying to get a better feel for the types of comments
 translators find useful)
   4) Modifies the code to use sprintf

Many of these changes caused strings to change (and added a few
additional strings). I am sorry about this.

Any additional feedback on how to improve the translation quality
 would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks,

Nathan,

I just wanted to say big thanks for having addressed all points and
having made ClassBot translator friendly.

As per the feedback on how to improve the translation quality, I'd
recommend setting the translation permissions to Restricted or
Structured. This way everyone can still contribute with translation
suggestions, but ultimately Ubuntu translators will review them and
accept them if correct.

You can change this at:

este,
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/libflashplayer-10.0.45.2.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz

descompacte, e sudo mv ./libflashplayer.so

[Ubuntu-BR] [OFF] MySQL

2010-08-17 Thread Armando Barsotini Neto
Bom Dia!

Tenho 2 servidores Linux:

Server01 = IP: 200.200.200.20  (Com MySQL)

 http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/repository-howto/repository-howto

  dar apt-get referente as personalizações.

#!/bin/bash
mysqldump -u usuario -p senha bancodedados bancodedadosbkp.`date
+%d-%m-%Y`.sql
## Aqui ele copia para uma máquina
scp bancodedadosbkp.data.sql usua...@ipmaquinabkp:diretorio/
## Aqui ele limpa o arquivo gerado
rm bancodedadosbkp.data.sql

Qualquer coisa posta ahe...

mysql -u usuario -p senha bancodedadosbkp.data.sql

As dicas
http://lixaonerd.wordpress.com/2010/08/17/transmission-daemon/

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] [OFF] MySQL

2010-08-17 Thread Ricardo Stock

mysqldump -u root --password=senha tabela c:\tabela.sql

com certeza vai ter problemas

ou seja ele deve especificar -triggers bla, bla, bla

:-)
