[Bug 1876613] Re: Wallpaper not retained between reboots

2020-05-19 Thread Andreas Berger
I was looking for a solution to an unrelated problem, where in the tray it
looked like my widgets were locked like I was used to from Plasma in 19.10, but
I could still add widgets etc.
So my search landed me on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMVsKEiQvO4

I figured that hey maybe the issues are related, so I first issued:
qdbus org.kde.plasmashell /PlasmaShell evaluateScript
"lockCorona(false)"

And then since I actually do want my widgets locked I ran: qdbus
org.kde.plasmashell /PlasmaShell evaluateScript "lockCorona(true)"

Now, after setting my wallpaper and logging back in, now it stays saved.

[Bug 1876613] Re: Wallpaper not retained between reboots

2020-05-14 Thread Andreas Berger
I have the same issue after upgrading from 19.10. It's not specific to
wallpapers either. For instance I can switch to Haenau or "Image of the
day" with some random provider... whatever I pick, soon as I log out and
back in again I am greeted to a black background.

Same behavior in folder and desktop view.

Just wanted to add that I had this same issue in Kubuntu after upgrading

[Bug 862553] Re: Latest libcanberra update causes Firefox and Thunderbird to crash on startup

2011-10-19 Thread Andreas Berger
While GTK apps have stopped crashing, they are still taking forever to
load and I get freezes every now and then.

I also still get the [3:3:800397596:ERROR:nss_util.cc(397)] Error
initializing NSS without a persistent database: libsoftokn3.so: cannot
open shared object file: Permission denied

This is using Kubuntu 11.10 64-bit. Funny enough I only have this issue
on one of three installs.

2009-12-08 Thread Andreas Berger
@Andy Whitcroft: is that your way of saying i should include information
about the kernel? Please be a little more verbose :-)

** Description changed:

  I am getting random freezes after the system has been suspended at least
once. Sometimes the freezes occur directly upon resume, sometimes hours later.
They never occur without the system having been suspended before.
  The Freezes usually start off with one application becoming unresponsive,
then gradually extend (compiz, panel, desktop..) until everything is frozen.
ctrl+alt+f1, alt+print+k do not work, alt+print+REISUB works.
-
-
+
  I have tried the following things without effect:

  -Disabling compiz

  -Installing the 2.6.32-rc6 kernel

  -SSHing into the frozen system, as suggested here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze#How%20to%20Get%20a%20Batchbuffer%20Dump%20%28-intel%20only%29
  did not work, out of two attempts, once the system did not respond at all,
once it stopped responding after the password prompt

  -The following xorg settings, one by one:
  * Option AccelMethod xxx - Try XAA, EXA, and (on recent -intel)
UXA
  * Option Accel Off
  * Option DRI Off
  * Option AIGLX Off
  * Option PM Off

  Ubuntu release: 9.10 karmic

[Bug 480850] [NEW] Random freezes after system has been suspended at least once

2009-11-11 Thread Andreas Berger
Public bug reported:

I am getting random freezes after the system has been suspended at least once.
Sometimes the freezes occur directly upon resume, sometimes hours later. They
never occur without the system having been suspended before.
The Freezes usually start off with one application becoming unresponsive, then
gradually extend (compiz, panel, desktop..) until everything is frozen.
ctrl+alt+f1, alt+print+k do not work, alt+print+REISUB works.

I have tried the following things without effect:

-Disabling compiz

-Installing the 2.6.32-rc6 kernel

-SSHing into the frozen system, as suggested here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze#How%20to%20Get%20a%20Batchbuffer%20Dump%20%28-intel%20only%29
did not work, out of two attempts, once the system did not respond at all, once
it stopped responding after the password prompt

-The following xorg settings, one by one:
* Option AccelMethod xxx - Try XAA, EXA, and (on recent -intel)
UXA
* Option Accel Off
* Option DRI Off
* Option AIGLX Off
* Option PM Off
* Option NoMTRR

Ubuntu release: 9.10 karmic
Package name: ???

Please give me instructions as to how to proceed!

[Bug 480850] Re: Random freezes after system has been suspended at least once

2009-11-11 Thread Andreas Berger
i just made a new observation, keeping a terminal with top on top of all
windows waiting for the next freeze: this time the first application to
become unresponsive was hydrogen, and according to top it started using
100% cpu (one of 2 cores), then the gnome-panel became unresponsive,
then gnome-terminal.

what causes random innocent applications to use 100% cpu?

[Bug 91786] Re: Compiz's Panel shadows show on top of other windows

2009-08-20 Thread Andreas Berger
@ Travis Watkins
The panel is always on top of everything except another panel
The panel as well as the active window are both a candidate for user
interaction, hence none of them should be covered by *anything*. with a big
enough shadow this becomes a usability problem. metacity proves it can be done,
see third screenshot above.
(i know that technically the panel was always on top, but it didn't feel this
way until we had shadows, and it shouln't feel this way)

[Bug 91786] Re: Compiz's Panel shadows show on top of other windows

2009-08-13 Thread Andreas Berger
@mac_v
unfortunately not.

the thing is: the panel is kind of an exception from other windows,
because usually, if a window is on top of another window, we want it to
cast its shadow upon the window underneath, but the panel and the active
window should be on an equal level, for both are a potential candidate
for interaction in that situation. (see mac os x)

the solution would be drawing the shadow of the panel behind other
windows although the panel itself is not (otherwise we would have the
window's shadow upon the panel which would be at least as wrong).

[Bug 91786] Re: Compiz's Panel shadows show on top of other windows

2009-08-13 Thread Andreas Berger
@David: i think we all agree to make this change, but now it has to be
implemented in compiz, it can't be done by changing a simple setting as
far as i understand it.

one detail btw: technically, at this point, the active window is
actually behind the panel: use the expo plugin (windowskey + E) to zoom
out, then move a window beyond the panel and see it is actually behind
the panel. since you can't usually do that i would consider that another
small bug, but it unveils that compiz has the panel above the active
window.

[Bug 405281] [NEW] Touchpad and buttons do not work on Samsung N120

2009-07-27 Thread Andreas Berger
Public bug reported:

Ever since kernel 2.6.31.x, the touchpad and buttons have not been
working. I'm not sure if there was something else that got upgraded at
the same time that might have broken it.

It does seem to get detected by my machine, since if I do sudo rmmod
psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse I get the following output from dmesg:

[ 2509.675173] Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1, fw: 7.2, id: 0x1c0b1, caps:
0xd04771/0xa4
[ 2509.712093] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio4/input/input12

I am running on autoconfigured X, there is no xorg.conf with any
settings what so ever, just as there was none when the touchpad was
working.

This is on a Karmic install, fully updated as of right now.

I've tried with a Xubuntu 9.04 updated as of today and it did not work.

I upgraded to 9.10 and it's still not working there either with

Not sure what information I need to provide here to help figure out the
issue.

[Bug 387875] [NEW] Samsung N120 wireless fails in Karmic

2009-06-16 Thread Andreas Berger
Public bug reported:

I have a Samsung N120 netbook, where the wifi refuses to work.
I'm running Karmic Koala 9.10, fully updated as of 090616.

lspci tells me the wireless chipset is:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device
[10ec:8192] (rev 01)

I've tried installing linux-restricted-modules-generic and linux-
backports-modules-karmic, but nm-applet still thinks I have no wireless
card installed.

[Bug 364514] [NEW] cpu frequency is reset to maximum after resume from suspend if governor is userspace

2009-04-21 Thread Andreas Berger
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce:

1) use cpufreq-applet to set cpu freqency to a fixed value (userspace governor)
that is not maximum (e.g. 800mhz on a 1.7ghz cpu)
2) suspend
3) resume
4) see that cpu freqency governor is still userspace but frequency is maximum
(e.g. 1.7ghz, userspace)

i use the cpufreq-applet for all monitoring and manipulating cpu
frequency scaling, but i don't think this is a bug of the applet itself.
i didn't select any package because i don't know which one. ubuntu
version is 9.04. please tell me which further information i should
provide.

[Bug 344252] Re: CPU Frequency Scaling defaults to Performance instead of OnDemand

2009-04-18 Thread Andreas Berger
Steps to reproduce a situation for which this bug is still problematic:

1. add cpufreq-selector -g powersave to /etc/rc.local (instead of powersave
use your preferred governor)
2. reboot
3. watch governor be reset to ondemand about half a minute after login
4. change governor back to your preferred one again

the time it takes for the governor to automatically switch to ondemand
after login seems arbitrary. is this intentional?

Ubuntu ships with pulseaudio and at the same time does not offer any
(gui, at least) configuration tool to choose your sound card. This
affects any user who has more than one sound device.

The easiest solution at the moment seems to be the following:
-install pavucontrol
-go to the Output Devices Tab in pavucontrol, click on the arrow next to your
preferred card and check Default
-if you still cannot hear your stream, go to Playback Tab, click on the arrow
next to your stream and Move Stream... to your preferred output device

So the current situation requires everyone with more than one soundcard to
research and install extra packages.
Since Pulseaudio has become default, i guess the solution would be something
like integrating or linking gnome-sound-properties and pavucontrol in a way
that naive users (like me) can deal with ;-)

[Bug 91786] Re: Compiz's Panel shadows show on top of other windows

2009-04-17 Thread Andreas Berger
I must agree with Chris
-it has not been fixed
-it is a valid bug

imagine...
the shadow settings were set to draw somewhat large shadows, like in macintosh.
this is possible. then the shadow would obscure the adress bar of a browser,
and so on...
how can a shadow be drawn on a window that i am currently interacting with?

[Bug 344252] Re: CPU Frequency Scaling defaults to Performance instead of OnDemand

2009-04-17 Thread Andreas Berger
Not fixed. (for me?)

It takes half a minute after login to change from Performance to
Ondemand. That's the time i have to wait now to switch it to whatever
governor i prefer. Because if i set it to Powersave immediately after
login it gets switched back to Ondemand after that half minute.

[Bug 344772] Re: lag between volume_up key and notification

2009-04-17 Thread Andreas Berger
single short button hits:
   animation is (somewhat) instant
volume is 100% and i hit the button once more:
   overshoot animations lags behind half a second
keeping buttons pressed:
   animation is not updated at all

with the old notification system there was no such delay, so this seems to be
related to notify-osd.

i think it would be important to fix this, because, for naive users like me,
such responsibility issues lead to generalized assumptions about the overall
performance of the operating system. it feels bad if i get no/delayed feedback
to my input.

[Bug 334310] Re: The dark notifications are easy to miss on a dark desktop

2009-04-17 Thread Andreas Berger
i agree.

also, i think it is problematic to introduce this notification system
*without any desktop integration*. before this, almost *every* aspect of
the gnome desktop was easily and globally customizeable (icon theme, gtk
theme...). what was so bad about GtkTooltips?

[Bug 359594] Re: System hangs for a while when changing background image

2009-04-17 Thread Andreas Berger
same here, on my 1.7ghz laptop @1400x1050 pixels.

if someone wants it, here is my opinion:
-this animation is totally unnecessary
-this behavior is not consistent with the rest of the gnome desktop, kde and
vista have animated (fading) widgets, gnome has not, and that is a good thing,
because it lets people keep their computers and not buy new ones.

[Bug 351326] Re: screen brightness notification out of sequence with keypresses on Dell XPS M1530

2009-04-17 Thread Andreas Berger
constantly and totally out of sync on Acer Travelmate 4650

the potential number of steps does not even match. my display has 15
steps of brightness, the animation seems to have twice as much. with the
old notification system the number of steps matched, but was mostly out
of sync as well.

please tell me if i should provide more hardware information

[Bug 305201] Re: KDE 4 Mouse Theme is reset to Oxygen on reboot

2009-04-08 Thread Andreas Berger
The bug is still present in Kubuntu 9.04 Beta, and one more detail, i
don't know if it's important: Although the cursor image changes OK
before rebooting (as described), Dolphin File Manager keeps using the
Oxygen Cursor theme (also before rebooting). This does not happen with
the Redglass theme.

[ubuntu-art] Human Metacity

2009-02-10 Thread Andreas Berger
I have a question: will the Human Metacity theme (as currently in use)
be used in Jaunty again? The reason i ask is because i am considering
redoing its round corners to make them smooth (as far as possible in
metacity, and maybe/optionally with a lower curvature radius to fit the
new murrine style). But if you told me the Human theme was obsolete or
being developed further anyway i would not take the effort.
Does anybody know, or is this not yet decided?

[Bug 295917] [NEW] metacity uses wrong icon theme for image filename=theme:something after reboot

2008-11-09 Thread Andreas Berger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

as some of you might know, metacity has the ability to use icons from
the current icon theme as images (for example for buttons). this looks
something like this in the metacity-theme-2.xml:

  image filename=theme:window-close x=2 y=3 width=width-4
height=height-4/

if you apply the theme, it takes the window-close icon from the current
icon theme, however, after reboot, it takes the icon from the default
gnome icon theme.

metacity version 1:2.24.0-0ubuntu1 (intrepid)

** Affects: metacity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Re: [ubuntu-art] Early Breathe Submissions

Thorsten Wilms schrieb:
 Hi!

 We now have 3 items on the submissions page, all thanks to Sebastian
 Porta.

 After talking with Cory, we decided that it's best if all submissions
 there are also announced to the list, so they can be discussed in the
 open. It's also a good idea to join us on IRC, #ubuntu-artwork.

 I already provided feedback to the artist on the first user-trash and
 the dictionary and don't want to repeat it here now.

 Cory and I are quite happy about the user-trash2. It provides a good
 impression of depth in the large size. This could perhaps be improved
 for smaller size by making the inner wall darker.

 The recycling logo is very nice on the large size, but perhaps the arrow
 heads need to stand out a bit more for smaller sizes.

 The shading on the main body gives a good impression of half-matt
 plastic. The border on the top is less convincing. Maybe it's just the
 lack of a shadow beneath it.

 The base of the bin needs to be darker. The rounded edge above the base
 would benefit from a smooth darker gradient.

 I'm not sure about the color, as I think we should avoid making
 everything orange, but we could get back it after other icons are in.
 We will likely need a few iterations, anyway.

 Cory was already willing to place it on the accepted icon page. With a
 few tweaks as mentioned above, I will agree :)

user-trash2, totally agree on that, looks awesome! no more cheap gloss.
(the analogy between the recycling logo and ubuntu logo is striking :-)

i have a question on the dictionary icon: why is it presented from such
a sideways angle, unlike the trash? i think you should keep consistent
here, and the frontal view of the trash is just perfect. (i know that
osx abandoned their pseudo-3d-angle icons because of cover-flow, and we
never know what may be coming next in ubuntu, just think of the desktop
cube...)

 Right now I'm fighting with panels. There are two problems with them;
  - The buttons on the panels are beige, instead of blending in with
 the panels.
  - The Applications-Places-System use the wrong background, they
 should look like the rest of the panel.

I used a TRANSPARENT MENUBAR on the panel when i created a pixmap theme
with inverted panels. i know that most themes just have the same image
file for both the menubar and the panel itself, but that can get messy
because the panel and the menubar have different resizing behaviors (due
to panel theming restrictions).
i guess the transparency solution can be used for other panel stuff like
applets as well. so here it is (sorry for the weird layout, this is an
old one):

style panel = default-inverted
{
xthickness = 0
ythickness = 0
bg_pixmap[NORMAL]=panel.png#unfortunately this

style panel-menubar = default-inverted

function= BOX
file= transparent.png#transparent menubar
to let the panel look through, this could also be used for panel applets
border= { 0, 0, 0, 0 }
stretch= TRUE
}
}}

style panel-menubar-item = default-inverted
{
 engine pixmap {
  image {
function= BOX
file= panel-button-in_prelight.png#selected
menubar item will look like a pressed panel button
border= { 5, 5, 5, 5 }
stretch= TRUE
}
}}

#

style panel-button = default-inverted
{
xthickness = 2
 engine pixmap {
  image {
function= BOX
state= NORMAL
file= panel-button-out.png
border  = { 5, 5, 5, 5 }
stretch = TRUE
}
  image {
function= BOX
shadow  = OUT
state= PRELIGHT
file= panel-button-out_prelight.png
border  = { 5, 5, 5, 5 }
stretch = TRUE
}
  image {
function= BOX
state= ACTIVE
file= panel-button-in.png
border  = { 5, 5, 5, 5 }
stretch = TRUE
}
  image {
function= BOX
shadow  = IN
state= PRELIGHT
file= panel-button-in_prelight.png
border  = { 5, 5, 5, 5 }
stretch = TRUE
}
}}

my post was not about panel transparency. the panel in my example is not
transparent at all,

i simply provided a solution for the panel-menubar
(=Application-Places-System) to be consistent with the panel by making
the *menubar* transparent with an empty pixmap (the whole thing only
applies to pixmap themes). this solution is more accurate than using the
same image for both because of the different resizing modes that i
mentioned in my previous post.

that was what Ken Vermette asked for, i think. hope that explains. by
the way, does anyone know another solution?
