In many countries, the only consultations taking place are with select members of the public, off-the-record and without benefit of sharing the latest version of the rapidly changing text. There is little possibility that a fair and balanced agreement that protects and promotes public interests can evolve from such a distorted policy making process. Governments, right holders and civil society should have an open and evidence-based discussion on the right strategy to confront willful commercial scale trademark counterfeiting and commercial scale copyright piracy. This discussion should take place in multilateral and national open and on-the-record forums with access to current negotiating text so that all interested stakeholders can participate. Re: [Ubuntu-be] Fwd: SOCIALWARE AND OPEN SOURCE
2007/7/12, mongolito404 [EMAIL PROTECTED]: thank you for taking the time to represent us :) indeed structural solution that could rapidly help the NPOs obtaining an appropriate and efficient operational environment. I did not look for THE solution, but to A solution, most particularly taking into account the speed of deployment of any solution as well as the final objective. this solution is not independent The primary short term issue to be addressed was the affordability of professional IT software and hardware while preserving continuity of existing environments. this is a very strong demand that does not apply to many oraganization that had no IT before, and to me that goes well beyond the first objective. Since July 2006, the project has been extended to Non Profit Sector (NPOs with a clear social aim). In this wider context we received the support of the King Baudouin Foundation. You will easily understand that our mission, scope and priorities have been thoroughly discussed with the Foundation. Some of you intend to contact the Foundation - feel free to do so if you believe it appropriate. how does he know ? We could do it with them before as suggested. Vis-à-vis the Open Source products, our position has been that these solutions were quite well known and had a wide web coverage already, so we choose not devoting our scarce resources, mostly volunteers, to address already solved problems and rather concentrated our efforts on what was unresolved so far, i.e. getting donated products from vendors on behalf of the NGO community. I do not believe in this. Microsoft products have a much wider coverage, and advertising today than free software. We hardly saw what added value we might have in distributing Open Source products at this stage, but on this point we certainly would appreciate your views. propose choice and tools that do not link the users to proprietary vendors that look for later ways to keep these users captives. This is a key point for us, as we cannot simply advertise a product without a significant added value in the process; else we would have to publish a list of any available product to treat them in an even way. We also declined to advertise several product offerings based on open source, but with proprietary layers which are bundled with support contracts: taken as a whole these offers were far from open because they actually made the buyer captive of a single supplier for any maintenance and support. But in any case, the choice of the solution (Open Source or not, Supplier X or Y) rests and should rest with the NPO itself, it is not our mission to influence this choice in any way – we only eliminate some financial constraints out of such a selection process so that the NPO decision can be based on sheer technical, benefits, or strategic considerations from their own perspective. by proposing only one toolset, they do not really give the choice to the users IMHO I hope that this brief update sheds some light on our mission and code of conduct. some. I just gave some ideas of an answer, and I am really persuaded that we need to find a proposition to socialware that can align with this mail. [Ubuntu-be] Fwd: RFS: QtOctave -- A Qt front-end to Octave - help to make it a ubuntu package
Dear I have obtained that matlab be replaced by octave, as the tool of choice (aka programming environnement) for the teaching of numerical analysis on the 2nd year at the Université libre de Bruxelles (Brussels, Belgium) in the faculty of applied sciences. For this to take place in the best conditions, a simple environnement, looking like the one of matlab would be very helpfull. This is what qtoctave provides: the users will feel at home. The computers will be equipped with ubuntu feisty, and in order for the students to be able to use the same environnement at home without paying or illegal copying (one strong argument in favor of octave vs matlab), an easy installation for them is a real plus. Jordi, whom I thank very much again, has provided a first packaging of qtoctave. Could you please have a look and consider what you can to to help it become a package tat could be included in the ones easily and officially installable on ubuntu ? I don't even know what the exact etiqutte for RFSing or where all those people are getting the RFS template or how exactly I should upload things. The Debianised source tarball is found here: http://www.cimat.mx/~jordi/debian/qtoctave_0.5.1-1.debian.tar.gz The dotdeb I built in Lenny (but which *should* build in unstable unless libqt4-dev is more heavily patched than I think) is found here: http://www.cimat.mx/~jordi/debian/qtoctave_0.5.1-1_i386.deb It is mostly Lintian-clean, save for #428403 and a missing manpage for widgetserver whose purpose I have not yet discerned. 2007/4/25, Benoît Plunus [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Nicolas Pettiaux talk about http://www.candidats.be on this list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-be/2007-February/002246.html https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-be/2007-February/002282.html) but this project seem dead :/ it is not dead. The point is that I am lacking time to go on today. I did many things with the person who proposed to host the site, with the help of fcouchet (APRIL). To go on we need more help. On other time, I would have proposed to contact Nicolas for starting again the project but I don't have time before the 15 May and I thing it will be a little bit late for this elections... Maybe we can adapt/translate the question list for Belgium and send them, as the elections are approaching? Any opinions? I proposed to do so in March but got very few answers ! I started, looking first for a host, and some help. This came. We have nearly finished to set the copy of candidats.fr on candidats.be For fr_be, someone friendly has already registered candidats.fr. As far as I know, no further action has been taken yet. who is ready to come and work on this with us ? (Simon and myself) I recently registered the standpunten.be domain name. Dear all, As mentioned in previous mails, the Bxlug will organized and man a large booth presenting free software and contents, during the Wentenschap -ExpoSciences on May 4, 5 and 6, 2007 at Heyzel, Brussels. This is a very good opportunity to present FLOSS to young and their relatives and teachers. As the event is bilingual, we are looking for several Nederlandstalige friends to help and give some talks. Congratulation and much thanks to everybody who volunteered and supported. I invite everyone to have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/WEXS_2007 and consider giving ideas and suggestions to prepare the bilingual event Wetenschap - ExpoSciences, on May 3,4 and 5 2007, where we, voluteers of Ubuntu-be and Bxlug will have the opportunity to have a booth and most probably also a conference room. As the public will be flemish- and frenchspeaking students and their parents and teachers, we can take many ideas from the recent VLOD. Re: [Ubuntu-be] Ubuntu-be.org spreads Ubuntu love at VLOD education conference
2007/3/11, François Cauwe [EMAIL PROTECTED]: just some more ideas about these good points : I think you should send education people with education specific things, and not send them to much mails they don't read anymore after a while. I think it makes very much sense to have a kind of monthly letter that also contains info such a to get more involved you can register to this mailing list, but most importantly, that would proactively help the teachers to do their job with free software. Many, I suppose, would very much like to know more what to use to do what, have interesting and successful experiences reported from colleagues ... We (the community interested inf FS in education) can surely help them, with info they would appreciate. 2007/3/4, Michel Daggelinckx [EMAIL PROTECTED]: We where present at the Dipro fair in Antwerp the weekend of 24-25/02/2007. thanks for the report. Maybe it could be added to the wiki. We had allot of interested visitors at our booth. Among them a number of representatives of local computer clubs. Also a number of German and Dutch vendors where interested in Ubuntu. We spread all our pressed cd's and around 170 burned cd's. it is sad that the people who receive these CD do not give back something, that would show at least that they understand that someone is paying for the CD + time to press + electricity + ... Still it was a very productive fair as we had a few people who where interested to become an Ubuntu support point. Good. [Ubuntu-be] Contribute to the Belgian wiki on open standards
Belgium has opened a public wiki on http://www.belgif.be/index.php/Accueil where everyone can contribute to the formats, hopefully open, that Belgian administrations could or would be supposed to use. This has been opened in order to have as many inputs from as many interested parties, especially the knoledgeable public and the free software community that has build so many standards in an open way. Today, there has not been that many open participation, probably due to the lack of public awareness of the initiative. You probably know that there are active discussions, not to say disputes about formats, and that this has a profound impact on interoperability, new tools adoption, not to say free softwares. I therefore wish with this mail to invite you and others to participate and spread the information, and help us justify this open way of inviting the public to take part in a process that is usually reserved to a rather close circle. Provided you can write in English, French or Dutch, coming from any country, any culture, you are welcome to participate, but please register on the mediawiki. Only the participation of many will help us in Belgium to continue and support this initiative. Tank you very much to spread this information around .
