Really, TC3 isn't the stupid... The technology and progress then was not
such that you can compare it to one available now. I admire the TC3 and
these were the things which let you make something better and improved.

Wiki platform are nice, but only for wiki. Yes, we can create anything from
it, but again it needs some hacks, added effort and getting off the straight
road. So, I would not choose a Wiki platform for a full-fledged site with a
part as wiki. But again I would say (as I earlier stated), this should not
be a good time to decide over the platform. We should plan something before
start digging in.

Ubuntu-In should not be just a wiki. It should be a Custom site, a forum, a
wiki, a CMS and more.

What I think about Ubuntu-India, not a site about Ubuntu, but a site more
geared towards the Ubuntu and its
usage/development/helps/articles/presentations/news around users in India.
You can also put it in some professional attire, so that people/businesses
in India can take Ubuntu seriously.

Why we should go for professional look and content:
Lets realise it. Everyone moved from simple to little more professional, and
usable, more informative and content rich. Like Fedora, SuSE, Ubuntu
official etc.

So, I will suggest a base framework, with some initial features/apps
developed on it. Then, gradually we can add more and more apps to it.
Later, it will grow with apps, contents and media. We can all put our
effort, don't we? Everyone can contribute, no matter how and what they
contribute. We can have multi languages for tutorials and articles.
Look at Ubuntu France, its totally in french. Why not our loco site in
indian language other than official english.French site has their own
Planet, Documentation and forum.
Again, look at Ubuntu Spain. They too got documentation, forum, blogs etc.

There are so many people in India involved-or-using Ubuntu than most other
countries. Many of them will volunteer forward to create some difference. Am
I wrong? Where else can we get such large community and team.

How many people here thinks the same? Please reply, support my view.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Redesign the Ubuntu India website

2010-09-04 Thread Ravi Kumar
The Redesign of Ubuntu-In is a Great idea..

First let me introduce myself. I am Ravi, Software Engineer and Architect in
a firm where OpenSoure == null-or-None. I never contributed much here. Never
interacted much with great people here. But I read most of the posts. This
Redesign project seems very interesting and I would like to contribute to
it, wherever and whatever be possible to me.

Before starting, why not we should gather some requirements and innovative
idea, and then plan the work, rather than just jumping in and start-coding.
It would be great to start by listing the basic requirements of site. Since
its a local community, we should focus primarily on information and
requirements around the users and contributors in India. Once its achieved,
then we should go for the solution.
After we have a direction to go happily, we can start working on the Designs
and Themes. And this will be one gradual effort to build something good.

So in nutshell, this would be:

   1. Brainstorming Sessions on what we should have, Requirement Gathering
   2. Cleaning and Categorising the things, and tagging it with priorities
   3. Work on basic Wireframe and Design Idea
   4. Development and Designing
   1. Mockups And Designs preparation
  2. Coding
   5. Draft Release (before we get live)
   6. And, Whoa.. Its Live now.
   7. Again run on #1 for gradual feature addon.

With a plan, we can build something good.

And yes, thats just my idea and you are free to throw it on my face. :)

Apart from these, why not we should get it on Django. There are many cool
developers here, who would love to devote their skills for a nobel cause.

Regards,
Ravi Kumar

Perhaps to me, this is a great news. Old hardware are not going to survive
anymore. Where do one find the Motherboards/RAMS/PATA-HDD etc if one got to
replace it. The Manufacturers already had obsoleted it. So, its really safe
time to take such move. And, it will give better optimizations.

And there are always rare-cases (else, why the word RARE). I am sure, it
would not disappoint 99.99% of ubuntu users.

These devices are made of lowest cost SSD/memory-chips from Chinese markets
(Ahhh, I hate Chinese market). Few writes (IO) in would just corrupt it. The
best check (and fastest) would be to write multiple copies of small size(
~4KB) files in it to full the capacity. Dang, and its gone :).

Don't format it.
Remember, when you connect a device to a computer, the device tells the
system that it is a Storage Device, and wiith capacity X-MB and filesystem
Y. That is false information programmed in device initially. When you
format it, it may not work again, or will show you up with some MB of space.

Just put that in a locker, and write a note - "Some stupid engineering, not
for humanity, but for stupiity"

I had one Airtel Broadband with Beetel modem a year ago. But their sales
department and IT dept. got me crazy. I documented that interesting story at
http://blog.threeslice.com/

I got my Modem configured with DHCP, so rather manually dialing and
connecting was overcome. Just I had to plug the wire in my system and voila
:)

You can ask your Technician who will visits you to configure it. Request
them to have it DHCP, life would be easy. Also ask for USB cable, if your
Modem has USB connection options too. Ubuntu recognizes the modem, when
interfaced through USB.

Beetel has embedded Linux. just telnet into it, providing usename : admin
and password (you must be knowing it, else ask airtel, thats your device).
you will get intoo the bare sandbox shell.

5 Months ago, I bought Dell Inspiron 1545 N Series with 3 Gigs Ram + Core 2
Duo/350GB HDD in just 36K. I was supplied with FreeDOS. I installed my
Ubuntu 9.04 on it - everything worked like charm. (Except one issue
regarding PM and disk life, which I won't describe here.. but thats the
issue with Linux, not the hardware compatibility).

Performance is awsome.
Initially, Dell guys refused to sell any such piece without Windows. I also
asked HP, and they also said they don't have such model without Windows.
Finally, one Dell dealer said he would get one piece (with FreeDOS).

Just last month I inquire for its latest price. and its around 3/- now.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Gloat Gloat

Hey Ram,

First of all, nothing is secure - this is the key.

No Idea what MS IE 8 has in terms of security.
But I totally agree with you, India is not really geared towards progress in
atleast IT. Politicians, who are just about to die like a over-ripped
mangoes on tree, who never used computer decide the thing. Also, many times
I got the impression that the person in power to decide/sign these govt
implementations in IT are just influenced by who is the repr, and what dream
are shown to their eye$$.

Almost all the things that are any-way directly connected to Govt lacks:

   - Proper Implementation
   - Even Half completion
   - No creativity
   - ... too many, i am running out of time.

Indian Govt needs some fresh people. From different professions. Not for
administration, but to suggest them and show them the mighty light. Well,
what we can do, just wait, wait and wait till these mangoes just drop off th
tree.
They invest $ for MS Office package. Why they don't use OOo, maybe they
don't know. They don't trust. OOo.org can't pay hefty sum to the decision
maker in govt body. Jyotish-shastra predicted not to use the Office package
brand starting with O.

They spent on products, whereas they should have invested in research and
implmentation for a secure environment and data storage using Opensource.
You may not be knowing, most govt controlled/attached/funded centers use MS
Word to create their webpage, and they just host. :) This just get me pissed
on even thinking about it. But hey, India is great and will be a SuperPower
in next 15 years. That is what they are busy calculating.

Free Software does not force you to contribute, in any sense. Just using the
Free Software is a huge contribution. What was the initiating point for Free
Software development? Help, Humanity, Open Sharing, no restrictions and cost
bridges. So do not ask a person to either use and contribute, else drop
using it;

The author seems really mad over his/her own-dig reasons, and tried to

Who cares about the price of DVD vs CD. The actual aim supposed to have a CD
image rather than DVD, so that users can spend less download bandwidth and
get the latest Ubuntu. If you want to have those extra dropped packages, you
can still download and install (usign apt-get/synaptics). More new drivers,
support for hardware integrated in Install CD would probably require more
space. And CD isn't getting bigger in storage. So how this would be tackled?

I think this is really not a problem if you have online repository access.

Yes, there are many sites, which proudly say they work on IE only. I cannot
remember, but perhaps PNB bank site even says "For secure transaction, use
IE only" and works with IE only. I don't know why? Mainly this is not wrong
with the PNB, but those Software Giants in India, which has most faith in
Microsoft technologies and had never peeked out of their room. They may not
be knowing about the wornderful opensource available to us and the bleeding
edge technology.

So, perhaps, while browsing these sites, you won't be able to perform the
transaction. You can try to use the IE4Linux (i guess the name is correct)
on Ubuntu for those sites, or can have Windows on VirtualBox for such
difficult situation. :)

I would strongly suggest you SliceHost. WebFaction is good, but you get your
home directory to work with, and mostly CGI instance script for apache
process. Though you can host most of the things there, still you will feel
restrictions.

SliceHost gives you one slice of Linux(there is the choice of Linux, and
ubuntu is in the list), means whole linux VM on Zen for you to control, you
can start/restart server, install anything with ROOT permission.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Mumbai: we will not be divided

2008-11-30 Thread Ravi Kumar
Ok,
Since this place is not for any such discussions. You can mail me
personally, and before I go to sleep now, I want to say something.

Just breaking rule a little, since no other easier way seems out.

WHile there was Terrorist attack, do you think it is good idea to flood
people saying CONGRESS is not good or else. That is real stupidest thing I
ever have seen. They want to cash every moment.
Another instance, be it Awaz or anything, any NGO, do they have people with
brain. Do you think if we all go there, visit the site and write our
sympathy, will cause Terrorist to flee away and never come since Awaz
Intelligents have gathered Geeks and peoples on their site. This is real
bullshit. I don't see any point in gathering and asking them to SMS (as
Delhi FM Radio channels are doing), or write to show the strength. When will
these people work with mind , intelligently. Instead, they should have made
people aware of many things.

And much funnier thing, FM Channel RJs were all cursing the attack, got my
sympathy, and at last asked people "Come, Join Hands, to show we are all
together to Fight, to do so write FOO BAR and send to ", huh, and there
they lost the faith. Theywant to make money every SMS on this.

So these people are making money out of everything.

So what Instead.

Here is the awareness, STOP PIRACY
PIRACY FUNDS TERRORISM. IF YOU BUY MOVIES pirated CD/DVD/SOFTWARE, you are
funding for the Bomb and carrier which will soon be delivered to you.
More than 90% of these are channelled from Pakistan, where terrorist gangs
supporters release theses new movies/Music CD/DVDs , software CDs etc (with
master copy and cover print), send them to India and other places., where
these are duplicated and delivered. This million $$ business funds those
terrorists and Ibrahim. Watch carefully, in some CDs you will find
advertisements and Studio ads from Pakistan.

Other way,
Narcotics/DRUGS, which again are supplied from Pakistan. When taliban
covered Afganistan, drug production rised to 700%.

The Fake Currency, which again from Pakistan to Nepal to India. Rs 100 is
sold for 45-60, which is put in market and huge profit is made in Business.

These are the things we should take care of and minimize their Funds. Play
with Mind and let them vanish. How many NGO s does that, be it Awaz?

I used to get some movies from friends to watch for my Weekends, but since
these all are pirated, I will now stick to buy movies, or watch in Movie
Hall or just download free videos and clipsfrom Internet for Entertainment,
but never fund the Terrorism.

Previously, I used to work on Windows, Pirated Windows XP, but thanks now, I
shifted to Linux and enjoying it. in Software, now I don't pay terrorist,
and never get crashes.

And at last, sorry for writing this long speech, but as people are curious
on my previous post, I though I should just convey at last in chain.
I request, do not post anything regarding this topic from now. I would
happily answer your Q's and accept flame if you want on my personal ID <
[EMAIL PROTECTED] >

and hope moderator understands waht I want to tell.

Thanks

[ubuntu-in] Strange Internet Experience on Ubuntu Linux

2008-08-30 Thread Ravi Kumar
Hi,
I am facing strange Internet experience on my Ubuntu system. I have a system
with Dual Booting, Linux/Ubuntu and Windows XP. Airtel Broadband connection
is with Beetel Modem interface to ethernet (not usb).
Now,
I can open Google.com, can search. I can open Gmail, read/send mails.
i can open citibank india page.
I can ping any site, and the Ip is resolved quickly (ping shws the IP
Address and also pings ).
I can open a site (cannt disclose the adderss, my companies internal site),
using IP address (no name regsited for that server).

BUT,
I cannot open any other site. I can search but when i click the link in
search result page, it just says,. "Waiting for site_name" and then nothing
happens for long. I telnet to yahoo.com port 80, issued GET /index.html but
nothing happened, just "Remote host closed the connection"

For all sites, it says "Waiting " and then nothing happens. This is really
strange. In google translate, I opened youtube.com and that opened, but not
the images or links which has direct requested to original server. Talked to
airtel guys, but let me tell you, they are the dumbest technicians in the
world (at least at customer care center). I have bad experince with them.
Let me share that to you people:
Once I called Airtel Broadband Customer care, and asked, wht is the Gateway
address for modem to airtel network, and they said 192.168.1.1 I explianed
the fact to them tat this is modem, which is gateway foir my computer. The
guy thought for sometime and trhen said, 192.168.1.1
I shouted and he ran to call senior officers, said he knows the address and
can tell you. The senior person came and I
had to brief everything again, and at last he said, "Sir please write down,
the gateway address is 192.168.1.1, and that is used for everything, from
computer to modem, from modem to airtel, wven we here use the same"

Enjoy

Re: [ubuntu-in] The power of linux in embedded systems

2008-05-15 Thread Ravi Kumar
Reading the message a little, I thought I should point you all to some good
direction rather than discussing Junk.

First of All, before you propose something, have always in mind that
Millions of Pure Intelligent Humans out here are working on OpenSource and
Linux. So they might have already thought that, or maybe even worst that
whatever you are thinking isn't even in the road.. So you should research
and think/justify (yourself) a little before pointing. And be out of Virtual
world. Read about the Boot Loaders and OPerating System's style of loaders.

For beginners, you (most people) will always find Linux distro's frustrating
initially, because you know Windows. Later you will stick to Linux and play
(really) and find if that stupid windows work can be done here in Linux
(Just not saying Windows is baD). If every Operating System Vendors would
come in a meeting and final a standard for Boot Loaders, then make it Open
(OpenSource), I think your wish would be accomplished. But thats not
feasible from business point of views of those closed source companies and
enterprises.

And for your information, Ubuntu is bigger in News and happenings rather
than Vista.. Google it. It doesn't mean how many people knows the name/brand
(in case your statistics again got deviated).

Hi, for security in ubuntu, the use of sudo is preferred. root user is
assigned random password, afaik. But if you want to set the password for
root, that is very simple.
$ sudo passwd root

Enter the user's password to get access through sudo, and then passwd
program runs with root priviledges.

Prefer running programs with sudo if administrative right is needed.

Sorry but this isn't what I am looking for my friend. I want a dedicated ssh
server exposed to internet, and people can connect to it through those
available clients which support internally ssh proto, else the client side
can use some ssh like Putty to create a local forwarded connection for the
tunnel.

So, I need some guidance in setting up the server side, how to forward the
traffic (in this case cvs traffic) to some other remote server serving the
cvs.

[ubuntu-in] SSH Forwarding how to?

2008-03-24 Thread Ravi Kumar
Hi friends,
I have a server which cannot be accessed through Internet. Now, I want to
expose a service to internet, but in secure way. So I choose SSH Port
forwarding...
The scenario is:

Server A host a service i.e CVS on port 2401 (default_)
Server B has SSH service running.

Both A and B are in local network.

Now computer C from far world needs access to that service on A, so I want
to tunnel the communication between B and C for A-C communication.

Something such as : [A : cvs] <--> [B : sshd] <---
tunnel ->[C]

Please guide me how can I enable ssh tunneling in such, I read many online
documents, but could not get the grip over the theory,
Also, for C i would like B as transparent. that is same port 2401 on B would
be forwareded to A:2401

again  that would be :   [A : 2401] <-> [B : 2401]
<--- ssh tunneling-->[C]

Please guide me, also suggest me some more secure options for such, but only
opensource.
I want ssh authentication with public/private key [optional]

single voice may not be effective to wake BSNL or Sify.
Anyway, the time i had sify, I used to do, login in Windows, connect Sify,
then remove the Network wire, adn restart the comp. in Linux and there you
go. *** Since sify has static MAC-IP list based connection, so please be
sure that your Network Interface Card has not been assigned different MAC
Addr by yourself.

The sify client binaries available is a pain in *donkey*. That installs, you
need to configure it as a service, run it with lot stupid step to find the
cooonection which keeps breaking in just 5 mins or less. and maybe that
linux client is now old enough to try, since Sify has revised the method and
released newwer version of the client.
The OVERALL thing is: sift really sucks. Even in connection quality, help,
maintinance and most prominently Linux support. Even Window$ support is
worst in sify.

Hi,
That was a main target project for me too. Anyway, I could not get anyone
serious enough to take it, and we cannt approach Ubuntu core team just for
it.
So, what about the idea to create a working project, poeple will join it and
there would be discussion, whitepapers, drafts, final work and submission,
and other team will take the work and implement it.

Its really clear that Microsoft never gonna put whole things related to
OOXML into OpenSource and completely visible to others. The past stories of
Microsoft has already given many lessons to others.
For India, it should be a bg matter to decide. IT and computers industries
in India is growing faster than many others. Adopting MS technologies will
definitely lead us to constrained environment.

Anyway, there should be a quick vote on a site, where we Indians can put our
voices and opinion.

Re: [ubuntu-in] New to uBuntu

2007-04-22 Thread Ravi Kumar

Ok Here is some thing you would like to know.
Although their are many linux flavors, but all are built with same concept,
just gabbing the packages, testing and bugfixing it, tuning and configuring
the sytem, pack and distribute. So, on everylinux you will be getting same
packages apart from some addons, which is system specific. Like Ubuntu uses
debians apt-get and synaptics with its own hardware database tweaked.
Redhat/Fedora uses Yum, suse got YaST etc...

now user friendly wise Ubuntu is ranked #1. Ubuntu is served in Enterprise
as well as Desktop too. If you want high performance, then you will have to
oil you own vehicle, go to Gentoo, which will take a long time compiling, i
m sorry, it is some days to compile the complete system, and you will evolve
from simple user to a Geek in some time, CUZ Gentoo needs a lot knowledge
before making a error freee compiled system. You will notice a little more
performance. But you can aslo do that on Ubuntu, with sources and
customizing the Kernel (that wat I do).
So, just try Ubuntu and if it doesnt fit in your personal taste and likes,
forget Linux. But keep in MInd, You started Windows knowing nothing,. so I
have seen people who have started with Linux when sits on Windows, yells
what a shit i m on.

This is true friend. You may not get some features on Linux that you are
finding on Windows, but you may wait or look for some alternatives (world is
full of Linux Geeks, find them on IRC)

As for installing Ubuntu on a partition with Windows (the dual Boot system),
its easy and perfect. You wont loose any data, if you dont do your own
mistakes performing installation.
During installation, in selcting partition type, select manual
configuration, do the things there and go to install in that parition.
Install Grub in MBR(master boot record) and thats all.

On Ubuntu, under "computer"(nautilus), you will find your windows and other
partitions (FATs) where you can write and read the data. So, here in any
time you want to swap data, you can do so.

for paritioning disk, Linux has gParted/Gnome Disk Partition tool, which
will resize and do anything you want. But for safety, you can do partition
on windows with whatever tools you prefer(if you have any, ie Acronis). Make
a partition for '/' and one 'swap'. thats all. Also, if you are going to
try more distros and dont want to loose your works in /home then you can
have a parition /home which wont be deleted or cleared each time you install
new distro in '/'.

Microsoft Outlook - >Evolution (you will evolve here better)
Messengers (Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, IRC) all in just GAIM (no need for multiple
messengers, but there is no video chat in Y! supported here, also not voice,
you can use skype for voice though)
GIMP is a photo editor and photo creator too, if you are not the artist, you
may find it difficult to straight draw a line :)
FTP Client, there are many, like gFTP, and also you can add Firefox
extension for FTP client and servers tooo.
There are many multimedia(audio video player), but for best experience
install VLC and beep-media-player along with the system default totem and
Rythmbox. Also, you will have to install seperated required plugins, so u
need internet connection working on your installed Ubuntu. gstreamer is the
engine for all sort of audio and vids. so search for gstreamer plugins in
the package manager (synaptics)

Good luck

Re: [ubuntu-in] A interesting read

2007-04-21 Thread Ravi Kumar

"personally feel coding using Vim or Emacs to be faster, efficient and
comfortable than using a GUI tool like Eric for my work."
BUt I think Working on Eclipse is much faster when you dont have to remember
all sort of syntax and when u satrt typing, the program assist you with
available options and also their descriptions. My dear friend, thats why
Eclipse got the fame, for being most intelligent and complete IDE for Java,
(also its immature plaugins, PHPand PyDev are there, worked on to make it
better).
For python I would suggest SPE.
VIM is a very good editor, plethora of functionality in it, but it walks
away from your mind, when you start on Eclipse. Eclipse also has automated
compiling on each save or with incremental typing, which instantly tells you
where your syntax is wrong.
It was a better development.
Simple theory is, in the lack of X server, we had only CLI. so we worked
hard to get most out of it. Then we got stable and mature X, satrted
improving the system and came GUI. Now in GUI, we have to progress and have
everything. Windows and MacOSx (for example) have much done on GUI. They too
have CLI tools (windows management tools for admins) to do the task over
network.
And those tools are pretty mature afaik. so there is no such issue what we
are doing it. It is fact and linux is evolving from CLI towards GUi and
lacks manything. Your argument is not justifiable my brother. Please try to
understand and contribute to make it better. We dont have time to fight over
the rule that we have many things,. World knows Linux is mature platform,
for Development and Server. Even Google uses Ubuntu at its Developers
platform. But when we talk about the common users, it doesnt onyl mean to
developers and testers and server admins. It includes all, like office and
home people too. Children and Moms too.
The complete freedom that is the aim of Linux isnt only to serve Developers
and Geeks, but to everyone. You know why india still is a pirate market even
the alternative Linux is free of costs with so many aaplications? People
just arent aware and if they try, most of them walk back to Windwos in
absence of finding a friendly environment.
Most of the time my system run on Ubuntu,
and for sometime i have to go to windows to do some game practice and
Dreamweaver tasks. Like flash designing too..
So, right now, Linux is not as mature as others are (in term of GUI tasks).
I read blog of a person who said Ubuntu is very easy and most user friendly
among other available Linux, but then he also admitted that he had to switch
back to his Mac after a week to do his task. He cannt over Linux.

Many people criticizes over this matter, but hardly it comes that those
people agree and meet to do some revision (either in Facility or in idea)..
most of the time killed just arguing over this and making other understand
it.
But dear friend, it is very clear, get out of the hood and there is no shame
saying we have a hut. But we can make a Tajmahal, if we admit our hut and
work to pay some contribution.
Ok here is some facts you wont argue (as i think).. just experiment:
Windows Explorer performs tasks and navigation quite fast than Nautilus and
Konqueror (even in many files direcory c:\windows\system32 which contains
more than 2000 files on general PC). OUr nautilus hangs a little and takes
much time when we browse /usr/share/bin where there is also about 1800
files. Guess WHY?
Nautilus has many features yet to come, like user can choose which dir to
display thumbnail and many other things
Apache performance on Windows has been seen more aggressive than on Linux,
same happens to MySQL

A python binary (blender Game) starts faster on Windows than Linux.

Why friend? if you have answer just opposite to me and want to throw some
flames over, then you are just making nothing out of it. Just admit and lets
contribute this summer time to our free and lovely tux. Everyone should get
over this bullshit arguments and just come my side, help write benchmarks
and performance bottlenecks. Also, we can contribute some time discussing
and finding what would be good for Gnome 3.0 (feature collections)...

u r right.
Every data file format needs its decoder plugin for handling and
understanding the data in it.
MP3 has some issues, related to properietary licenses, so it is not shipped
with Linux as default. But you can install it from Internet.

You using Gnome, so go to gstreamer section and install good, bad and ugly
plugins to handle all sort of multimedia files.

Re: [ubuntu-in] A interesting read

2007-04-20 Thread Ravi Kumar

Yeah, but think some other way. A Geek (a term for powerusers ;-) will
definitly do commandline. But here is the truth my brother. GUI is developed
beacuse it has some power to serve. The easy and accuracy and thus thrusting
your performance with less error and more productivity. You wont disagree.
Right, world changed from CLI to GUI.. Wordprocessors and many other
(Movies, picture viewer and editor etc) needs GUI. Have you seen the control
panel of Nasa footage, about discovery crash. There was a GUI in it to show
the graph.
Simply, GUI gives you the vision by forming pictures and graphs,
illustrations of whats happening. You know your friends by remembering the
face of their and relating that face with the name, and its voice. Now, when
a blind happens to be the case, he has nothing, so he better get practiced
remembering by feel and voice, and then relating that to name,. BUt there
the poor blind got compromise. Right.

Everywhere there is pictorial notation to remember the thing. And if the
notation got beauty, it gives more impact than other. Lke the most beautiful
lady/girl in your class, or circle.
Thats why GUI.
NOw what Central tools mean? LIke managing all the computers resources at
single place (it would be like doing all the things related to cricket in
your playground. Whenever you need that, you just head towards the
playground ad not waste your time thinking over some new solution. It can be
possible to make a central tool, for example running and configuring all
your services in Gnome-control panel, under service catagory, with solid
GUI, which lets you do everything possible thru cLI. that way, a noob even
can start and play with LAMP. right (just taking example).

GUI has an ultimate power, it can serve a noob to advance users, depends on
that quality of design.

HOw many people are comfortable with regular expression, and can do awk to
replace certain words by another words. Lets be in OO.org, it would be damn
easy for them, just replacing all.
There is the power of GUI.
NOw, we all have to admit, that we really lacks Central Managememt tools.
Think of this for a while, a Linux Management Tool, is a GUI where you can
manage all sort of things. If Apache package is installed on system, it will
put its own configuration module and information into that LMT (Linux
Management Tool) database, and will be automatically listed there. Also, the
initial launch of Apache will ask the Users about performing configuration,
doing all sort of things, and be fault tolerant, built in self intelligence.
That would be a sort of perfect application. Thats what we study in computer
sc, about those aspects.

In short, best GUI gives you beauty and productivity, much higher than the
CLI.

Re: [ubuntu-in] A interesting read

2007-04-20 Thread Ravi Kumar

Good to see pakistan-ubuntu team is doing very well.
Can we do something so our Government can shift to Linux. I was reading an
article in Newspaper, where it says, Microsoft is starting a new service. It
is cutting out some features out of Windows OS and Office, so that people in
poor or developing countries can use Office for just $4 (Rs 180 around)...
But again, it gives the sliced software, not whole.. anyway, Microsoft
always do such tricks.
So, when Government will accept Linux, it will go beyond current current
development.
Many countries have switched to Linux.

I have also read Mark Shuttleworth recent interview. He admitted that in
Enterprise, Linux can be deployed, but it lacks many central management
tools and deployement features, mainly GUI based, which is still to come.

Very true, I also found this. Linux is powerful and feature--rich in
command-Line, but when it comes to GUI, it lacks many thing. Even the GNOME
has not been much mature as WIndws Graphicals and OSX are. Not even KDE (KDE
is blotted with many options and tools, but it has been stated as much
developed and advance GUI, uhh, maybe due to QT, and good team behind it). I
personally like GNOME (dont know why, just matter of taste).

Anyway, my point was, that if we can do somethng for current developement,
along with Indic related issues. I am no good programmer, not a great
artist, but i am a good visualizer, and I always prefer to work in group.
Maybe, you are among the best programmers, so we can unite to do something
better.
One man can make a good software, but a team makes better than that. What do
you say.

Re: [ubuntu-in] VCD Problems

2007-04-20 Thread Ravi Kumar

No specific answer, here is just sort of little information

When it says IO error, it means there is some problem reading the data file
in CD, maybe CD problem,, or maybe CDROM

But if u say DVD plays fine (In Linux), then i cannt suggest any thing.

Well, instead if VCD:///media/recorder

just use /media/recorder/path/to/file.dat

and see it it handles...

Re: [ubuntu-in] [Fwd: to know about ubuntu]

2007-04-18 Thread Ravi Kumar

Yeah, good,
But there wont be any cost using the Ubuntu, so as well, Ubuntu wont pay u
anything if you make several users.
Its just the Freedom.
Did Gandhi asked you to pay some to him, cuz he is fighting in DHOTI to
bring new era to India, SWATANTRA BHARAT.
After almost 60 years, We really enjoying Freedom. See the Development we
have now. ANd you might not have even dreamt of it, if we are not
independent.
Same is true in every field. If we get Freedom in our digital world, we will
be so much technically developed, I cannt tell you.
The proprietary software and companies just ignore knowledge sharing,
means preventing you to learn anything. Hey, why dont you pay some time
reading the EULA and other licenses from Microsoft. You will get pity, when
it says, Microsoft doest allow you to all the extents, and may seize the
right anytime if it seems appropriate. So what you paid for.

Its like Pepsodent will come out with its license like "Only one person at a
time, and once in day is allowed to use Pepsodent, and thats not more than 1
gm of it at a time. How will be life then, your family with its own
pepsodent. LOL

Thats why we are fighting Freedom. Give some time learning the benefits. And
also, it is more stable than Micro$oft windows, as far as i know, but little
slower than MS in GUI term.
Anyway, we got light, we have hope, and soon we will be in complete
daylight.

Thanks

2007-04-16 Thread Ravi Kumar

yup, I know... good to know it is going to happen. But still Ubuntu needs a
lot in development to come yet at Desktop.
I think, GNOME developers should get some coffee and sit back to think upon
the absolutely new release, Gnome 3, with full research over the usability
and look.
Ubuntu should thrust the GNOME development. I looked at Gnome homepage,
about the ideas pounding over new features and look, requests, etc about the
Gnome-3.
They are proposing many things, but all are bullshit to some-extent.

Can we go for some research, over this, HOW NEW GNOME-3 SHOULD BE...
not only look, but all ideas related that you want should be there to make
it nice evolution in Desktop Era.

Be positive thinking it, We need it

Re: [ubuntu-in] Is IISDLL is virus how to remove it

Ok, can u boot into ur Edubuntu and then go in that direcoty and delete it.
If there is more than one file distributed at many places as copy, then you
can search it in nautilus and then Delete it.
There you can also install Avast (much reliable than AVG), and I am sure it
will delete it. But since its installation wont get infected, you can just
boot into safe mode and do the task.
Also clamav on your ubuntu can help scanning the windows partition. Anyway,
you got reason to play, so PLAY :)

More or less yes. However, I guess, that's not the

Re: [ubuntu-in] Help on projects in open source

2007-04-13 Thread Ravi Kumar

So you are new. Well, programming language is just a personal preference.
THe main core is common language paradigms and your algorithm. All thing
depends on your view/perspective to look at the problem. So, you will
completely be lost in this circle, which language to choose and what to
make.
Here is some information you will find useful:
System Programming and Web Programming/Scripting:
If you want to develop system oriented programs or solutions. These are
projects like building kernel, system tools (like copy, paste, grep, awk),
compilers (perl, php, python)... these types of work are done usually in
C/C++ etc middle level languages. (Assembly is not preferred, though it
produces lot optimized code, but u cannt do OOP, etc in assembly, so large
projects are never accomplises).

Java is good programming language, through which you can make cross platform
applications (can be run on Linux, Windows, OSX etc, without recoding, just
compile for specific platform).

Python is best in features (afaik).. I will tell u later how.
NOw if you want application programming, on Linux, you can use C, C++, Java,
Python, Perl, PHP and lot others (yes PHP too, you can pack and make PHP
codes executable, google about it).
For having GUI (Graphical User Interface), you have many libraries. On
Linux, it GTK+ for C, GTKMM for C++, QT for C++ , PyGTK for Python, GTK for
PHP and many other too (like motif, tk). But use what modern desktops
standards are (GTK+/GTKMM, QT).

Now comes Web programming, solutions and scripting. There is HTML all know
LOL. (XHTML is now standard). Web applications can be made using PHP,
python, Java (JSF, JSP), ASP (hell no), .NET (Mono for Linux .NET) etc.
Then there is Javascripts. Its cool, though not much flourished scripting
language. NOw you know there are bunch of solutions to a single Problem,
"Which Programming Language to use"?

And take my word, its all you to decide, just analyze the problem and decide
the solution. Give much time deciding other factors too, it will give you
more insight of your problem and quality of your judged solution.
And never ask this question, haha. Else, others will have to write this much
again.

As I said, Python is Great, WHY?
Python cannt produce final output as size and speed optimized as C and C++
will.
But then why python. Because it got many things in its bag. Its powerful
because you can write complex solutions in just few lines of codes and it
does job well. But since the python interpretor will be always there in
middle to execute the task, it will be little slow (but u cannt feel it on
modern computers).
Also, its like scripting language, write the code in somefile.py and execute
it. No need to compile. If u want executable, you can make it.
You can do great job. This was about the application programming using
python. You can do web-application programming using python too. Just like
PHP. but better than PHP, as u can implement the OOP much easily and program
like standard, where PHP lacks this style.
Python is much performing than PHP. Python is used by Google, NASA etc in
various task, other than C++/C.
So if u learn Python, you can do Application and web Programming . If you
are master in one programming language, you can learn others in short time.
Believe me.
And experts dont evolve in little time. It takes 8-10 years for a person to
be master or expert. Its the research i read on web, where it was shown how.
So have patience. Bye BYe

If you cannt decide what now, just stick to C++, whre you will learn the
main funda of programming. Concentrate on your algorithms and way of finding
solutions. OK

[ubuntu-in] I am New

2006-03-27 Thread Ravi Kumar
Hi Friends,
I am new to this Indian community. I have been using Ubuntu since 5.04, and i liked it very much, than other Linux.
I am a Computer Sc. Student, Delhi University. I love programming, and hacking (offtopic). HEre, i have been using Linux since i bought my computers 3 years back. I have tried many Linux, Redhat9.0 to Mandrake 9/2006... Yoper to Router Linux, Arch , Gentoo , Suse, Knoppix, PHLAK, Knoppix-std, RHLE 3 etc, and now i m stick to Ubuntu.

I am currently researching on Desktop implementation of Linux, "Home Desktop Linux OS". I want to make Linux perfect for Home, SOHO, office works and be a complete choice for users to use it. Currently Linux is in its heavy development phase, where it has many things to develope and maintain, optimize and make perfect. Its still incomplete for Desktop.

Here, in Ubuntu-In, i request people with common interests to join with me, and make some +ve good development.
There are many minor to major projects available to work on. But, i am a human, i need help from other human, to serve the humanity.
Please let me know, if I can have a new task embed in this ubuntu-in LoCo,.

Notethat my work isn;t local specific. It will be for Ubuntu mainstream.
