2011-10-20 Thread Joel Grissom
I am a new member to volunteer to work on Ubuntu Art and I am excited. I have
wanted to give something back for quite some time now, but it is hard to
convince people you will work for free. I tried he
Ping several non-profit orgs. But not one replied to my offer to help.

Anyhow, I am a web designer who is learning PHP and I work on Gimp as well as
the Adobe creative suite. I just finished my Master of Technology, Graphic
Information Technology in August at Arizona State University. I moved to
Houston, TX shortly after that, and I am ready to contribute to the Ubuntu Art
Project.

Welcome Joel,

It's great to have you here. Are you mainly in the area of design and
production (html/php) or can you do drawing art as well?

What kinds of things would you like to help with? Do you know any
python? PLaces like the loco directory need more design help and general
help, there are also lots of small pieces that could do with some
art/design attention.

Best Regards, Martin Owens

2009-08-01 Thread Jan Bongaerts
Hey everybody,

I have been using Ubuntu since Dapper in 2006, and never looked back. I
would consider myself to be an expert user, with a few basic administrative
skills. I do not have any programming skills anymore though. Last time I
wrote a program it was on a Commodore 64 (yes, I am THAT old!), and then the
odd line on a spreadsheet.

My background allows me to understand the basic workings of a computer.

Having lived in Southern Africa for 15 years, I recently moved back to
Antwerp, my home town.
I am a native Dutch speaker and my English is near perfect.

I would love to contribute to the Ubuntu Magic, and help save the world from
MicroFsoft Doom, and I already registered myself on the map as a support
point.

I would love to further my skills on the Ubuntu system, both as
administrator and as programmer. Being a pilot, I have a lot of spare time,
albeit usually not at home, to work on my laptop (a dual boot Win XP/Ubuntu
Jaunty Acer Travelmate 4201, now two years old)

Best Regards,
Jan.

Jan,

Welcome in the Ubuntu-be community !

We allways need volunteers willing to be involved in all kind of Ubuntu
promotion events.

See the agenda on the website http://ubuntu-be.org/nl/calendar and the
future events in the wiki
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/FutureEvents .

If you have the possibility, you could join the team organizing an
Ubuntu-be booth in Antwerp Expo (Dipro Computer Fair) on 13/09 and/or
29/11/2009.

For details, see

Check out our wiki at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork and perhaps
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/FAQ for some general information.

You can add your wallpaper idea, if it is suitable for our next release
(Jaunty) by going to http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Jaunty , creating

Also this email list is a great place to ask questions although if you need an

myself in a new mail to this mailinglist, so here goes:

Well, I'm a 24 (almost 25) year old guy, from Peer (Limburg). I
graduated last year as master of elektronics with the option ICT from
 the KHLim.
I've been using ubuntu for a year or 2-3 now, and have been thinking
for a long time to join the community. I waited until now, just
because I didn't had a lot of time before. And I also found this
belgian community just today. I'm was at FOSDEM, and got into a talk
with one of the crew of the hardy release party and thats how I found
 out about this community.

Well, what's more to say about me? I don't realy know, I you want to
 know something more, just ask.

Hi!
As a background pictures are so simple to make, I'm afraid you will
never reach a consensus.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_of_the_bikeshed

Parkinson shows how you can go into the board of directors and get
approval for building a multi-million or even billion dollar atomic
power plant, but if you want to build a bike shed you will be tangled up
in endless discussions.

Parkinson explains that this is because an atomic plant is so vast, so
expensive and so complicated that people cannot grasp it, and rather
than try, they fall back on the assumption that somebody else checked
all the details before it got this far. Richard P. Feynmann gives a
couple of interesting, and very much to the point, examples relating to
Los Alamos in his books.

A bike shed on the other hand. Anyone can build one of those over a
weekend, and still have time to watch the game on TV. So no matter how
well prepared, no matter how reasonable you are with your proposal,
somebody will seize the chance to show that he is doing his job, that he
is paying attention, that he is /here/.
(from
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/misc.html#BIKESHED-PAINTING)

I would prefer to trust Kenneth on his decision.

I don't like that wallpaper either. It's way too dark and depressive. Who
made the choice anyway? I thought the community decides which wallpaper will
make its step into final release. Many people submitted their proposal
artwork and they weren't even asked which one they like... The question is:
should I submit any Artwork in the future?! But now it's too late anyway,
September the 20th was the deadline for submitting Artwork.

Actually, if you have a clearly outlined audience and design goal, it is
quite easy to take the broad subjective murmurings out of the mixture.

- From that point forwards, you evaluate the work based on whether or not
it is communicating with the audience and delivering on the goal. Still
estimation, but well away from the It's ugly etc. discussion.

Rather art and design 101.

That said, of the following points:
 -It's too dark
 -Grainy
 -Looks too much like Vista

It's too dark falls into the completely relative world of bikeshedding.

Grainy could possibly be quantified. I am sure the dithering issue
can be adjusted, although the percentage of zoom on the source image is
probably adversely affecting this.

Looks too much like Vista is probably touching on the larger statement
that it is of the 'sweepy / swoopy / curve' genre, which it most
certainly is seated within.

So of the three, two are relatively useful commentaries.

Hi all.

I joined because I was not sure if the ubuntu art team was aware of the
commotion regarding the gutsy default wallpaper. The main complaints are:
-It's too dark
-Grainy
-Looks too much like Vista
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=555477

For fun I stuck it on gnomelook to see how it would be rated. It's only been
on the site for ~1hr and it's rated very low.
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Gutsy+Default?content=66683

When comparing what was posted at ubuntuforums and the original design on the
wiki page it seems to have gotten darker. Maybe we should consider going with
the original brightness and a higher quality (less grainy) picture.

I'd really like to become an active part of this team. I'll need to dig
through the archives a bit to see where ya'll are at.

HP/UX is much alike linux in some ways (e.g. both are more or less POSIX
compliant), so some of your experience should be useful on Ubuntu too.
Also, your experience with _commercial_ UNIXes and commercial UNIX

[ubuntu-marketing] New member. Good to have found this team

2006-07-15 Thread alan c
Hi, I am very glad to have been told about the marketing team.
I am one of the uk Infopoint (note1) volunteers, and display as much
as I can at a local computer fair (Bracknell uk), monthly. Ubuntu and
Kubuntu are popular distros to newcomers. This is partly because the
shipit packs are very attractive (well done!)

I recently took a kubuntu Desktop CD pack into a local high street PC
store (Dixons uk) and asked if the manager was available, or someone
who was good with PCs to talk about different systems. The guy came,
and I asked if anyone used Linux - no. But he had heard of it and he
was a bit interested in knowing. I showed him the kubuntu pack and
said it was a live CD - Linux - and it would install if he wanted it
to. He gladly took it and when his current panic was over (!) he would
try it. I was delighted.

As an aside - I am now right out of Kubuntu packs from Shipit, and my
recent requests are not being approved. I am quite concerned because I
dont even have one example left of a Kubuntu pack to 'demonstrate'. I
have no objection at all to making CDs myself but the CD covers are
the ideal vehicle for peoples interest.

Anyone know what is happening for shipit? It is hard to plan my
displays if I dont know what I can receive. Is it maybe because I have
had a number of CDs sent to me over the last several months and I
cannot be sent more?

Thanks for the welcome!Yes, I have plenty of print experience as it was what I was doing at the advertising agency. It's fun, but i prefer digital; it's s much nicer not to have to work in 2gb photoshop high resolution documents.. =)
UI designing at DICE is usually done with freelancers though, I've been talking with the guy behind Battlefield and he also freelances for ad agencies such as Ogilvy; year-round positions as UI designers are rare and few inbetween in the business, sadly. It's a whole science, but mostly game companies just hires a good graphic artists that knows the genre.. :/
Or, hires a UI company like scaleform then, I suppose. =) That sounds really nice! Where are they located?I'm not much of an IRC'er (I got bored of it around, uh, '97) but perhaps I'll renew my passion. Might give it a shot!
May I ask what the top prios are for the art team right now? What are you guys focusing on - I guess it's a bunch of work for next release?Cheers/Niklas2006/6/22, Michiel Sikma
