You will find details of other interesting things that are going on there.
Including ubuntu things (occasionally)
You can join the manlug mailing list here :

Disconnect and reconnect the battery a few times. Try it power lead only. When
it's turned off sniff the power socket. Can you smell burning ? If yes then I
think it's young James' department.
I had one that reported a damaged or discharged battery. I took the battery out
and used the power lead for a couple of months. Plugged the completely
discharged battery back in and it now holds a charge where before it would shut

2009-05-03 Thread ged byrom
I've recently upgraded from 8.10 xubuntu to 9.04 xubuntu via synaptic

System Monitor shows gnome-system-monitor is going from 8% cpu-100% cpu
with no mention of Xorg.
Top shows Xorg and gnome-system-monitor sharing the cpu use.
The only unusual thing I can see in processes is that I have 14
xfdesktops all sleeping. I haven't tried to get rid of them yet, but I
will when I've finished writing this.
The only other thing I'm thinking of is the installation of cairo-dock.
Could this have anything to do with it ?
I don't usually upgrade because of the grief I've had in the past and it
looks like I've done it again-or have I ?
Here's hoping

This sparks off a whole canon of inspiration:

   B is for Basilisk
   C is for Centaur,
D is for Dragon (but not Kimono)
   G is for Gryphon
   M is for Mermaid
   P is for Phoenix
   S is for Sphinx
   U is for Unicorn
   W is for Wyvern
   Y is for Yeti

I know the first four are already past, but the alphabet will have to

 And what else?

Ask truck drivers at motorway service stations for directions. They'll

In case I missed a response to your questions, apologies up front.

Some of the members on this list may well be developers involved either

is not for them as they have their own. Neither is it solely for use by
geeks or IT Professionals only. The sole intent of this list is to help
Ubuntu users in all it's various flavours, to aid, assist and guide, and
occasionally to go off topic - perhaps if you think of the list as more of a
social club with technical expertise thrown in for good measure you'll have
a better understanding of how I see and treat this list. Now if that

 The _default_ is.

If you visit http://bthomehub.home/ once setup you can change it to WPA.

As Alan said the default is WEP, but it does WPA just fine :)

As to the 2091 it's fine my mate runs one. By default its locked to BT,
so if you leave BT its junk.
However, it's been, err, fixed. A quick Google will reveal the new

[ubuntu-uk] start up problems

2007-02-23 Thread ged byrom
I am having problems at start up. I am using kubuntu edgy. My problem is
that sometimes it starts up and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I get
pc out of frequency with some numbers in khz and hz. These numbers can
change. Sometimes I just get a blank screen and I can't get anything if
I press ctrl-alt-F1.
It might start up 1 in 4 or 5 tries. It will sometimes start in another
kernel but sometimes it won't.
I have edited my /boot/grub/menu.1st and removed splash and added
apm=power-off. It seemed to work at first but now I'm back to square 1.
Can anyone suggest anything else to try.
Does anyone out there know how I can get rid of the kubuntu screen so I
can see all of the loading up on a permanent basis.I know it's pretty
but I'd like to see what's going in and where it is hanging up
