You will find details of other interesting things that are going on there.
Including ubuntu things (occasionally)
You can join the manlug mailing list here :

Why not have a competition for an advert for ubuntu, like the one for linux

It will cost little or nothing and practice makes perfect for the future. Or

It was alan c who posted the original twice. I've seen it online somewhere

I can send it to you if you can't find the original. It's 4 pages.

Are you trying to start it on battery or power lead ?
Disconnect and reconnect the battery a few times. Try it power lead only. When
it's turned off sniff the power socket. Can you smell burning ? If yes then I
think it's young James' department.
I had one that reported a damaged or discharged battery. I took the battery out
and used the power lead for a couple of months. Plugged the completely
discharged battery back in and it now holds a charge where before it would shut
down in minutes from a full charge.

The system running 9.04 is in for a plug pulling session I think. I'll

[ubuntu-uk] Rampant gnome-system-monitor!!

2009-05-03 Thread ged byrom
I've recently upgraded from 8.10 xubuntu to 9.04 xubuntu via synaptic
package manager. I noticed the system was running slower than normal.
System Monitor shows gnome-system-monitor is going from 8% cpu-100% cpu
with no mention of Xorg.
Top shows Xorg and gnome-system-monitor sharing the cpu use.
The only unusual thing I can see in processes is that I have 14
xfdesktops all sleeping. I haven't tried to get rid of them yet, but I
will when I've finished writing this.
The only other thing I'm thinking of is the installation of cairo-dock.
Could this have anything to do with it ?
I don't usually upgrade because of the grief I've had in the past and it
looks like I've done it again-or have I ?
Here's hoping

Sorry Alex, I thought you were going to be a newbie doing long distance
in Great Britain.
In March 2007 Richard Ibbotson advertised a mapping day in Sheffield.
This was for openstreetmap.org which is a world wide free street map. I
remember looking at it at the time and it led me to other sites with
explanations of how to start mapping and other free mapping sites. I've
had a quick look but couldn't find what I was looking for.
Try on the sheflug mailing list. That is where the invitation came from.

I'm a private hire driver and I would tell you to use a map and plan
your routes so you learn the roads. Use the gps on the final run into
town. We have drivers who are totally lost if it isn't on the tom tom.
They don't learn anything.
As for things with vague addresses, they shouldn't be sending goods to
places like that.
Ask truck drivers at motorway service stations for directions. They'll
tell you every road number on your route, and one day you'll do the same !!
Good Luck

Is it really wep ?
It is my understanding that wep is well and truly broken-about 53

I obtained the Bt 2091 off ebay for a friend and that had a little

Is it not useless?

I think it gets too far to be the bios and I don't have any trouble with
windows and I didn't have any trouble with dapper.
I was getting an error message when playing video with mplayer movie
player. I can't remember the error (It mentioned x-video and 3d
support-Ithink) but I fixed that by installing a new driver for the
graphics. I have also installed windows drivers for a usb wireless
dongle. I'm guessing it's one of them.
I have tried to look in the boot log but it tells me --"The file
'/var/log/boot.log' does not exist."
I consider myself to be a novice, I'm just not frightened of rooting
about where I shouldn't.
My graphics card is an ati 8500 all in wonder and the usb stick is an
msi-us54g.
I'll have to do some studying to remove the symlink because I don't know
what one is.
Thanks for the help

Dear Mr Byrom

I am Chairman of the Board of Directors responsible for the Bolton
Technical Innovation Centre Ltd on Minerva Rd. When we were setting the
place up, we had a long discussion about 'open' and 'closed' IT systems,
and decided that the best option for an innovation centre was Linux.
We host a conference for those that believe in 'open' systems every
year. So, I am well aware of your concerns. A lot of schools are
switching over now. I will be seeing Zentec again in Bolton next Friday,
who do a lot of work with schools in the IT area, so it is a subject
that I have an interest in.
