Ok, just worked out how to do the clean install of Ubuntu Netbook using
usb stick. had a few problems, but got it working now. Problem is, I
cant work out how to use it. Is there a guide for the Netbook version.

Thanks.

it is a clean re-install. It sounds like your system might need
reinstalling anyway.

If you're reinstalling from USB, you only need the BIOS to recognise
the stick, not Ubuntu, so this shouldn't be a problem if you can get
someone to create an installation stick for you or burn a CD for your
external USB CD drive? I'd probably put 10.04 on it as 10.10 doesn't
have long to run.

Yeh, the disc was already in there, when I inserted it. I have tried

Basically I tried everything I could think of, all that you have already

At that age, and depending on the make, it might not be. The Acer Aspire
One, for example, uses a Fedora based distribution called Linpus Lite. If it
has a 'helper' desktop, there are still ways of starting a Gnome desktop on
it. For that matter you can install an up to date version of Ubuntu on it

Back then, Tesco sold a model with Ubuntu - I think it may have been a
Dell. If so, Dell used 8.04 that was customised by Dell. It was a bit
like 10.04 Netbook Remix, but not quite the same. If it is, I have a CD
that Dell sent that I could post an ISO of. I put 10.04 Netbook Remix
on my Dell Mini 10v the day I got it. Quite nice.

With regard to breaking it. Why not make a USB stick or SD card from
CloneZilla? You can make an image (to another card) of the entire drive
on the NetBook before starting. That way you can restore to the
original if you break it. Also, he may have had a CD with an image
supplied when he bought it. Maybe talk him through copying the output
from sudo lshw and e-mailing it to you before you go further?

It could also be Linpus (if it's an Acer) or one of the many other

I'd hazard a guess it is pre-unity. It's probably a good idea to find
out if it is Ubuntu first. If it is (or isn't) you can always boot off
an Ubuntu USB stick and copy his data off (maybe on to a separate stick
for good measure) and then reinstall a fresh copy of Ubuntu (maybe give
him the option to try Ubuntu Netbook and the standard version of Ubuntu

So cunning that he'll end up with a netbook with a cut down copy of

Forgot to say you could grab the ISO of NetBook Remix 10.04 and
run it as a live CD. What you will see may be similar to what he has if
it is Ubuntu. If you get lshw (or lspci), check what wifi chip there

Easiest whatever to make a couple of live USB sticks, 10.04 netbook,

Unless you have the wi-fi chip that became a problem after a Kernel
upgrade sorry, don't exactly know which one. May be some info on
the forums. I am going to look through any old kernels I've saved, and
try to find where the problem starts if I can.

I've got to find out before next month as I have the problem! It is
that you can log on to some wi-fi transmitters, and not to others ...
It's really enigmatic and bothersome. Now I know the make and model of
one hub which WON'T work, I might just go out and spend my £25 to buy
one and investigate Discovered the nature of the problem at
OpenSource Expo
