Looks like they add 15% so might need to bump it up slightly but I guess we have some time. Lets see about feedback or maybe other ideas? Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] 18.04 Release Party
In the past my experience has been install parties are not very successful up here so i might suggest just hanging out discussing new features in the release and having a good community building opportunity. So what say we $100 weekend rental of the guest room? https://luckylab.com/hawthorne-brew-pub/ and a few of these platters plus say $75 for non-alcoholic drink tab at the bar? So like $339.85 (First three platters with hummus upgrade because its Portland) and $75 drinks and $100 for rental. Maybe ask for $545 total to allow for flexibility on drinks, gratuity and any change in prices etc. ? Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] 18.04 Release Party
Sorry about that! So with release date on April 26th it might make sense to do the 28th and my guess is since we have not done events in Portland for some years turnout might be light but perhaps around 15-20 people. If we wanted we could meet at the Lucky Labrador on Hawthorne it is a large space and very tech friendly. If this sounded reasonable we could try to identify how many guests we planned to have and seek funds to accommodate food and drinks for slightly over target. I'm sure some of the current and former Canonical employees and Debian Devs will come out for it. Thoughts? Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] 18.04 Release Party
I guess we should figure out a venue first and then put up an rsvp to gauge how many would turnout then we’d have a idea for food and beverage and maybe some swag. Let me reach out about a venue now. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] let's do events!
I’m thinking it might be too late now as I look at events already in planned for OSCON it seems most have speakers booked and their events planned out. If we wanted to do one later in the year we could be more successful but we’d need a dedicated team of volunteers that can take time off from school or work and be available the days before and during an UbuCon plus months before spending a lot of time planning out speakers and venue. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] let's do events!
For both yes but the UbuCon will take a lot of work and we’d need significant funding for sound gear, food, etc. If we do an UbuCon we might want to plan it the weekend before OSCON next year so people can attend. Let’s setup a meeting to brainstorm and identify needs and costs and we can pitch to Canonical. As for location - I'm all for holding it in Salem, however I would ALSO like to hold it at Mozilla, because I'm a big fan of FF. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] team blog
On Wed, Nov 19, 2014 at 8:24 AM, Walter Lapchynski w...@ubuntu.com wrote: So I was thinking it would be nice to have a blog. Integrating that into our website is probably a good idea, but regardless, being included in the Planet Ubuntu¹ feed (and maybe in the LoCo Portal² feed) would be a good way to get the word out on what we're doing. Currently, no one really casually runs into us and I think that would be a good thing to try to have. Planet Ubuntu is only for individual blogs or project blogs they do not do LoCo's AFAIK but LoCo.ubuntu.com does ofc IIRC correctly most of our traffic came from search or Ubuntu Forums LoCo.ubuntu.com sent very little traffic. I should point out that until I was aware that the team needed a leader that I didn't even know what LoCos were, let alone that there was an Oregon team, despite being a contributor for many years. I'm probably not the only one. Shucks that's a shame as at one point we were one of the most active in North America but before the Oregon Team existed there was also the PNW LoCo which was Washington and Oregon combined but the Governance disbanded it and forced LoCo's to choose states. As a result both Washington and Oregon become pretty inactive. Then Dan and Thomas both gave it a go and ran the LoCo for sometime but Dan left for the Army and Thomas I think did not have enough time? Time always seems to be the thing. That being said, I've looked into the notion of aggregating our posts via something like Yahoo Pipes, but I discover now that on Planet Ubuntu this means it will link to the Pipes feed and can't be redefined to point at some other site. So I'm kind of leaning towards the idea that we actually have a blog blog with various authors who can contribute to it. I guess we get a Drupal website with the Canonical hosting³. Any Drupal lovers out there can confirm that we can get a well-formed RSS feed out of it? I know enough about Drupal to know that we can have a bloggish kind of thing. I believe Canonical by default uses WordPress for LoCo's but I would also encourage you guys to find a sponsor and self-host it might save you headaches when it comes to upgrades, waiting on things etc. Most LoCo's get hosting on their own because it is easier. Hello Ubuntu Oregon Team, Sometime ago I announced my plan to step down from Ubuntu Oregon as the team contact and lead and did a call for help. Nobody initially answered that or subsequent calls although today Walter Lapchynski of Eugene, OR has volunteered to fill the team contact role. [Ubuntu Oregon] OSCON 2013 - Volunteers needed
Hello All, This year Ubuntu Oregon will yet again have a booth at OSCON although this year Canonical has decided to sponsor the costs of our booth. Things this year will likely go a little differently than in the past but mostly for having a better booth experience. Ideally we will need between 3-5 volunteers who would like to come to OSCON and help man the booth from Tuesday July 23rd at 5pm for about two hours and then daily for the rest of the week from morning till expo hall close. We hope to have some Ubuntu Touch phones or tablets this year which Canonical would be securing and also possibly a much nicer booth overall since Canonical is helping out with those logistics. [Ubuntu Oregon] Open Source Bridge Pass Raffle
Like last year Open Source Bridge is offering all PDX User Groups a free pass since we don't have a event coming up locally before the event I guess we can go ahead and raffle it here. So if you are definitely able to attend the event (June 18-21) and want in the raffle just reply to the mailing list (any message will do) and on the 24th I will have Mark Terranova use random.org to pick a winner. What is Open Source Bridge? (http://opensourcebridge.org/) Open Source Bridge is a conference for developers working with open source technologies and for people interested in learning the open source way. Open Source Bridge is not a typical technical conference: It’s entirely volunteer-run, by developers, for developers. Session tracks are technology agnostic; the conference content is based around shared community experiences and similarities between projects, not differences. Proposals are public from the start, and we welcome community comments before our content team selects the featured talks. A hacker lounge is an integral part of the conference for code sprints, bug bashes, session deep dives, bouncing ideas, starting new projects or just mingling with other geeks. As developers, we find ourselves in many roles; we are users, creators, and leaders. The Open Source Bridge team believes that our role as open source citizens informs our work whether we are conscious of it or not. Open Source Bridge is intended as a call to action to become better citizens, by sharing our knowledge with each other. -- Benjamin Kerensa http://benjaminkerensa.com I am what I am because of who we all are - Ubuntu -- Ubuntu-us-or mailing list Ubuntu-us-or@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-or

Some of the awesome half-day tutorials available are: * Apache httpd Basics * Crash Course on Web Services Security * A Beginner's Guide to Apache CouchDB * Getting Started with Apache Flex * Working with Apache Cocoon And there are many more. This is a great opportunity to increase your skills + knowledge about server-side development with Apache. Since it's in Portland, it's also a really great deal for us Portlanders who don't have to pay for a hotel. If you can't make the conference, there are also some free and open events happening: * Barcamp on 2/24 * Apache Hackathon on 2/25 You don't need to register for the conference to take part in those - Portland community members are welcome to come along, meet Apache project members and try to find points of common interest. [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Oregon 12.10 Release Party Flyer
Hello Everyone, With our release party coming up next month I wanted to pass this flyer along that James Bradley of Salem made which you print a few copies out on your own printer and post on a local Community Board at perhaps a Fred Meyer or even take a few to your closest Library. I am actually going to hit a few libraries today and drop of some of these flyers and some brochures and CD's! Feel free to contact her directly about it. Cheers- -- Forwarded message -- From: Brown, Lindy lindy.br...@corvallisoregon.gov Date: Fri, Aug 3, 2012 at 10:07 AM Subject: Corvallis Public Library open source project To: la...@osuosl.org la...@osuosl.org Cc: Dunham, Charles charles.dun...@corvallisoregon.gov Hi Lance, How are you? I know this email is a bit random -- you and I met at a Corvallis Beer and Blog from long while ago. At the time, I was working at OSU, but have since taken a job with the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library http://www.cbcpl.net/. The CBCPL looking to improve our library catalog http://library.ci.corvallis.or.us/newcatalog/ via an open source project, and I thought of you and the OSU OSL as an organization that might be able to help (or at least point us in the direction of some folks who might be interested in helping us). We're a mid-sized library, and we have a lot of support from the community, serving over 85,000 people in Benton County. We have branch libraries in Monroe, Alsea and Philomath. We are forward-thinking, want to do big things and are big fans of open source. As I mentioned, we're looking to improve our library catalog. A few of my colleagues (Charles Dunham and Andrew Cherbas) have been researching an open source layer called VuFind http://vufind.org/about.php. It's the difference between a really plain looking cataloghttp://library.ci.corvallis.or.us:8083/#section=resourceresourceid=4923742currentIndex=0and one that is more interactivehttp://catalog.douglascountylibraries.org/Record/862902/Home?searchId=13702291recordIndex=5page=1, like Douglas County Library http://douglascountylibraries.org/'s catalog. http://vufind.org/wiki/installation_status More importantly, it has the capacity to http://vufind.org/wiki/installation_statusunify collections from different sources. Our method of including ebooks in our current library catalog is a hack; It’s rarely up-to-date and one has to click through to a separate website to check availability and so forth. Our ebook vendor will be releasing an API soon, which would enable us to integrate their ebooks in to a VuFind catalog. As we add new digital collections in the future, we would hope to integrate them as well. We’ve looked into this in a very preliminary way so far, but it seems that getting this to work would require: - Writing an ILS driver http://vufind.org/wiki/building_an_ils_driverin PHP for VuFind, so it can communicate with our Integrated Library System. Our ILS is called TLC. Though many libraries have implemented VuFindhttp://vufind.org/wiki/installation_status, no one has yet created a driver for TLC. - Customizing the VuFind interface to meet our needs, and branding it for the Library. - Integrating our Library2Gohttp://library2go.lib.overdrive.com/0482A927-9C05-4885-80C2-5057619AA549/10/438/en/Default.htmebook collection in to VuFind using an API. I read about the OSL's mission and Public Sector Program and was wondering if any of your students (or anyone else, for that matter) would be interested in possibly helping us create code to implement VuFind as our library catalog? Once installed, we would support and update VuFund ourselves; we just lack the expertise for an initial implementation. This would be a wonderful service for the greater Corvallis community with a long-lasting, positive effect. Do you have any thoughts on where we might find the expertise to make this happen? Unfortunately, we have very limited budget, but we’re hoping we can find someone who would like to do this for fun or to gain experience. Thanks for your time and any advice you can share. We really hope we can find someone to help us! Sincerely, Lindy (and Charles) ** ** *Lindy J. Please take a moment to review the publication; Scribus doesn't have a spell or grammar checker so be on the lookout for typos or things that don't read right. Any feedback is welcome. 'remain committed to educating others' makes it sound like something happened and commitment wavered which I don't think is the case. I'd just go with 'are committed'. 'millions and millions' of people seems strange to me too. I think millions gets the point across. The mention of Debian will be confusing for people just reading about Ubuntu for the first time. I believe page one capitalize Open Source and page two does not. There is a period after 'creative pursuits.' but the sentence carries on. much like this one. 'hundreds of dollars just try something new' might be missing a 'to'. I might stick the contact information on both sides as I personally missed the url in the beginning and then at the end was wondering how to contact the team. Thanks it looks pretty neat! -- Brian Murray Good points, Brian. The remain isn't mine; it's from existing materials. Ben, since you're calling the shots, what do you think? If the point is to underscore the commitment, perhaps the term stand committed would serve better? Sounds nice. I struggled with the millions and millions myself, but just millions seems too much an understatement, (and Carl Sagan said, billions and billions and billions). How about many millions, (which might be construed as a overstatement, but what the heck)? Many millions or untold millions? I believe the proper name of the event does include Debian. Personally, I feel giving Debian some credit is a good move politically. The front of the flyer does try to address a more informed reader, while the back is more for the newcomer. But what is the consensus? I concur on giving credit while at the same time wonder if Debian names off all upstream projects it benefits from? Do we potentially confuse some or give credit where credit is due? Or perhaps I can make better credit on the site and that could be sufficient since our hope is that the reader will eventually visit the website and signup for our mailing list etc. I wonder if slangasek has any feedback on this one. Open Source on page two, now. Preposition, to, added to specified sentence. Duplicated URL at end of ~ for Home section. Thanks, again, Brian. Does anyone have any feedback or ideas? Official CDs are available for sale in the Canonical store, at roughly the cost of media: http://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=976 Do you think you'll actually be able to do them more cheaply than that locally? It actually would appear Canonical waives shipping price on CD's which is actually pretty nice... But we are still talking $200+ for 200 CD's I can get spindles of 100 CD's for like $15-20 and I'm not sure what labels would cost... State of the Wiki
Hello Everyone, It is time for some change when it comes to our Wiki I really do not feel our Wiki can be neglected anymore and I'm hoping someone with some Moin skills might be interested in cleaning it up a bit and re-organizing information. I'm hoping we can use California's Wiki as a example by which to build off of: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CaliforniaTeam Things I would like to see: *Integrate JVLB's new logo into the design *Clean up the Header Menu *Tidy Up pages *Move roster to its own page and best of all make a complete backup of our current layout in a /Backups branch of the Wiki site. Is anyone up to the task? I imagine getting the Wiki in a better state will take about a hour or two of your personal time if you got the knack for it. -- Benjamin Kerensa I am what I am because Team Lead, Ubuntu Oregon of who we all are - Ubuntu bkere...@ubuntu.com http://ubuntu-oregon.org -- Ubuntu-us-or mailing list Ubuntu-us-or@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-or
Ubuntu Oregon Banner
I would like first and foremost to thank Brian Hellman CTO Americas for Linbit for taking a active interest in Ubuntu Oregon and thank his company for sponsoring our banner. As you know James Bradley a member of the LoCo who lives in the Salem-area has been working on a banner design which has finally reached a production quality and I submitted to a local Portland Company for printing. Thanks again Brian and James! Hope to have this banner fresh off the press for our release party at PuppetLabs next month!

Due to the ambient noise didn't record an interview, just was getting to know a few of the guys better. Unfortunately since then the KMUZ tech committee decided to also meet at 6pm on Fridays, but I would like to get back and record some interviews at some point. Don't know when the committee gets out tonight, but next week I'll hit the Ubuntu Hour meet at 530pm, anyone up for coming out a bit early to chat? Also wanted to let you know that NW Tech Show is organizing a field trip on March 31st to Portland's next Barcamp: http://barcampportland.org/ We're hoping to start a virtual makerspace / mutual awareness amongst the tech-minded of Salem so that we can have events like this of our own, and this trip seemed like a good start. Community Leadership Summit will be from July 14th - 15th (All Day both days) http://www.communityleadershipsummit.com/ It is a free event and is led by Jono Bacon (Ubuntu Community Manager) and O'Reilly Media and I must just say it is a good event if you are interested in learning about leading a community or developing community related skills. This event is also the weekend before OSCON so you will get a chance to meet many of the speakers of OSCON since they often go to CLS.
