[Ubuntu-x-swat] [All nvidia-current and nvidia-updates need repackaging to mirror official Nvidia releases...]
Comment: The official Nvidia long-lived-branch stable driver is now 319.49. That means that the recommended official driver is 319.49 and should be used by all Nvidia users except those using old legacy devices. There are important fixes that are in this driver and the previous 319.17 that affect Chromium browser users especially: + Updated the nvidia-settings command line interface to no longer assume the X screen 0 target, when no target is specified in query and assign operations.Instead, all valid targets of the attribute are processed. + Fixed a memory leak that occurred when destroying a GLX window but not its associated X window. These can crash machines using Nvidia GPU's according to a Chromium-bug http://crbug.com/145600 NVIDIA linux drivers are unstable when using multiple Open GL contexts and with low memory.: and if check `about:gpu` you will see this is a major reason most if not all Nvidia GPU's are currently blacklisted. Also, when using Windows 7 I am liberty to install any driver version I want, keeping my machine up to date with the latest official Nvidia fixes. With Ubuntu I'm stuck with older drivers that affect performance and contain old bugs that have already been fixed. This leads to a lower quality experience than with Windows. Drivers need to be kept current with upstream in my opinion. For the time being I have been cherry-picking *.deb packages from X-Org-Edgers so that I can replicate that Windows experience and it's been working. However, all Ubuntu users should have this experience as well and most do not know how to manually install packages using DPKG so it is out of their reach. The current Nvidia driver versions are as follows: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html Long Lived Branch version: 319.49 -- `nvidia-current` should be here as stable Short Lived Branch version: 325.15 -- `nvidia-updates` should be here as unstable Legacy GPU version (304.xx series): 304.108 -- `nvidia-current-legacy` should be here. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1219908] Re: All nvidia-current and nvidia-updates need repackaging to mirror official Nvidia releases...
+Timo, my tone was one of excitement and not really a rant, so I apologize if I came off as sounding impatient and I can understand the long hours everyone here puts into this and I really do appreciate this and am very grateful. However, I'm looking at this from a customer expectations point of view and not a developer point of view. This applies specifically to sophisticated customers such as gamers, engineers/scientists/developers and power-users who are the most likely candidates to migrate from Windows to Ubuntu on the desktop. From the customer point of view - especially gamers and demanding power users - the driver release cadence is still way too slow and is a valid bug. Sophisticated users need to flexibility to extract the maximum performance and ensure maximum stability for their system especially for mission-critical applications. Whether we like it or not the industry standard that every customer expects is that set by Windows 7/8 and for those systems there are always fresh drivers available within days of release. Anything slower is perceived as being sub-standard. It's not a matter of who's right or who's wrong it's that we need to at least match or even better beat that release cadence. Ideally a Linux distribution should find a way to be ahead of a Windows release cadence. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1219908 Title: All nvidia-current and nvidia-updates need repackaging to mirror official Nvidia releases... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015297] Re: Screen partially darkened after suspend and resume in Xubuntu
Very strange bug. I don't get this at all using Unity and it's always bright on that DM. I followed Martins instructions and was unable to reproduce the effect in XFCE 4.10. However when I let the computer go idle by itself and allowed the xfce4-power-manager turn the screen off I noticed slight dimming. I'm attaching the logs from pm-suspend.log and pm-powersave.log because I couldn't find pm-utils.log in the logs folder. I've also scouted launchpad.net for similar bug reports and am finding some that - on the surface - seem related but I will need to send a list to Martin to confirm if these are in fact related. Some of these relate to the screen losing it's original user defined brightness level and jumping to another while others include the back-light being non- functional and the brightness controls not working... ** Attachment added: pm-powersave.log https://bugs.launchpad.net/xfce4-power-manager/+bug/1015297/+attachment/3470450/+files/pm-powersave.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1015297 Title: Screen partially darkened after suspend and resume in Xubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pm-utils/+bug/1015297/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Have an interesting update on this problem: When I run Google Chrome and go to 'chrome://gpu-interals' the X Server would crash and this didn't seem to be dependent on the Xorg Core Server version. I installed my Nvidia divers directly from the Nvidia binaries. The Nvidia*304.32.sh.run drivers have the ability to do a sanity check run by the following...just go to TTY1... 'sudo lightdm service stop' 'NVIDIA*304.32.sh.run --sanity Apparently the Xorg Core Server upgrade alters a single Xorg file and this corrupts the Nvidia installation and the Nvidia installer will recommend a reinstallation of the drivers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash
AWESOME, just did a controlled test post Nvidia 304.37 Installation via Nvidia binary sh installer... 0. Assumes installation of 304.37 Nvidia Binary Driver 1. Okay installed the latest Xorg Core Server '2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.7' via Update Manager. 2. Went into Google Chrome and opened about:gpu-internals and triggered an X crash and got brought back to greeter. 3. Switched to TTY1, stopped Lightdm... 4. Ran 'NVIDIA*304.37.run --sanity' Nvidia installation sanity check and this is the output: = '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so is not a symbolic link!' = 'Installation was altered since the last installation. It is recommended that you reinstall the driver 5. Reinstalled the Nvidia 304.37 Binaries as instructed by the Nvidia sanity checker. 6. Restarted Lightdm. 7. Navigated to Google Chrome and ran about:gpu-internals and guess what? NO CRASH :-) Think this solves the problem... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 Title: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nvidia-drivers-ubuntu/+bug/973096/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1032344] Re: [SECURITY EXPLOIT] NVIDIA Linux Driver Hack Gives You Root Access?
Boaz, just saw this, waiting for Ubuntu and Canonical to finally make 303.32 the DEFAULT Nvidia-current binary and they are still lagging behind with the 295.xx series and X-swat is still pushing the tainted 302.xx series so waiting for them to do this to resolve this bug... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1032344 Title: [SECURITY EXPLOIT] NVIDIA Linux Driver Hack Gives You Root Access? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1032344] [NEW] [SECURITY EXPLOIT] NVIDIA Linux Driver Hack Gives You Root Access?
Public bug reported: Apparently there is a security vulnerability with the current Nvidia Drivers that gives the attacker ROOT access? Attack vunlerability description: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.security.full-disclosure/86747 Sample attack code: http://cache.gmane.org//gmane/comp/security/full- disclosure/86747-001.bin Excerpt from Phoronix article: Link: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=MTE1MTk David Airlie published this NVIDIA hack today to a mailing list (the exploit is attached there as a single C file). Airlie isn't the original author of this hack but rather the code was passed onto him by an anonymous user(s). The code was forwarded to NVIDIA Corp more than one month ago, but the official NVIDIA Linux proprietary driver developers have yet to act on the vulnerability. As a result, it was decided to release this to the public. Now maybe NVIDIA will take care of it since this 760 lines of C code can provide root access to a system running the NVIDIA binary blob. First up I didn't write this but I have executed it and it did work here, I was given this anonymously, it has been sent to nvidia over a month ago with no reply or advisory and the original author wishes to remain anonymous but would like to have the exploit published at this time, so I said I'd post it for them. It basically abuses the fact that the /dev/nvidia0 device accept changes to the VGA window and moves the window around until it can read/write to somewhere useful in physical RAM, then it just does an priv escalation by writing directly to kernel memory. Questions: 1. Which Nvidia Proprietary driver versions does this affect? 2. Should we update to a specific version to avoid this? 3. Are Nvidia 295.49 x86_64 or i386 drivers safe? 4. Is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 3.2.0-27-generic #43-Ubuntu immune from this? 5. Can you go upstream and contact Nvidia about this and get a fix issued? ** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Confirmed ** Tags: verification-needed ** Tags added: security ** Tags removed: security ** Tags added: verification-needed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1032344 Title: [SECURITY EXPLOIT] NVIDIA Linux Driver Hack Gives You Root Access?
