Denise and I live on the edge of the park at 4256 Regent and are having people over after the movie for some refreshments. [UC] Free Tickets to the Penn/Fordham Football Game at Franklin Field Saturday
Hey Neighbors, Every year Penn sponsors a Community Day at Penn Football. This year the game is tomorrow, Saturday, October 10 at Noon at Franklin Field. Penn will be tangling with nationally ranked Fordham. We have not yet given away our full allotment of tickets yet. We are going to try and pick them up early tomorrow morning. Denise and I are also having people over before the game for a “tailgate” at our home at 4256 Regent Square from 9:30 AM until 11AM, which will give us enough time to walk over to the game. Naturally we don’t know everyone on these listservs, but we are always eager to meet our neighbors. If you are interested in either the game or the pre-game reception, let me know. We should have enough tickets without a problem but I do need to keep track. Thanks. -Matt Wolfe _ J. Matthew Wolfe Law Offices of J. [UC] Party after Shakespeare in Clark Park
Denise and I live on the edge of Clark Park and are using the performance of Shakespeare in Clark Park as an excuse to have a party tonight (Saturday, July 27). Re: [UC] Check out Last store standing: A look at the past and present of McDonald's a
While I have no problem with a McDonald's there, I don't like the building. While their chain style is maybe not my preference, I'm also not taking issue with the aesthetics. What I do not like to see are buildings that look like they should be in a strip mall in the suburbs. I want a commercial ground floor use at that location, and McDonald's is just fine. A commercial use makes 40th Walnut a destination. It attracts customers to all the businesses on that commercial strip. A single story dedicated-use building in that urban location, however, is inefficient. A few stories on top with offices or apartments would feed even more customers to the businesses in the commercial strip. A four story building with McDonald's on the ground floor (even with its ugly signs plastered around it) would be an improvement for the block, and probably be more profitable for the owners of the building. ___ J. If I need a quick food-fix I do NOT want to be forced into spending a lot of money to buy food that may not be as dependable as a McDonald's burger. There's no food trucks there, I'm not big on Indian food, Bobby Flay's is thirteen bucks for an admittedly excellent plain burger, Marathon's pricey, and Philly Diner serves up vile, greasy bowel-clogger that tastes like my kitchen sponge. McDonald's, at least, has _quality control_; I know what I'm getting every time. I'm hoping McDonald's holds out here. I can't see anyone raising a protest to defend the place (and sadly, there are a few locals who'd protest _against_ it), but hey, Mickey D's has big resources, and they can handle themselves. [UC] Christmas Party
My wife, Denise, and I are having some friends over for a Christmas Party this evening, Saturday, December 18, from 7:30Pm until late. Santa will visit with children at around 8:30 PM. We certainly do not know everyone on these University City based listservs, but we are always eager to meet our neighbors. If you can stop over, please do. We are at 4256 Regent Square, which is on 43rd Street between Chester and Woodland Avenues, across the street from Clark Park. [UC] Party after the Iliad in Clark Park Tonight
As I hope you know, our friendly neighborhood professional theater company, Curio, is planning to hold a free outdoor presentation of Homer's The Iliad in Clark Park. The show goes on at 7PM. While the production is free, let's presume that they will pass the hat afterwards, which you should donate to. Regardless, this should whet your appetite for their regular productions in their theater at Calvary at 48th and Baltimore. Since Curio is kind enough to plunk down a professional theater production in my front yard, that seems a good excuse for a party. Denise and I live on the edge of Clark Park, at the corner of 43rd and Regent. We certainly do not know everyone on this listserv, but we are always happy to meet our neighbors. Squirrel Stew Ingredients: 1 squirrel, quartered 1 cup diced onion 2 large tomatoes (from your garden) or 1 can of tomatoes Assorted fresh ,or canned veggies Preparation: Sprinkle seasoned salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper (optional) liberally on the meat. Pour some cooking oil into a large pot (dutch oven). Sauté the meat with the onions until well browned. Drain the excess oil, add about 2 cups water, and bring to a boil. Cut up the tomatoes and add. If you use canned tomatoes add them now. Turn down the heat, and let slow cook for at least an hour. Important: older squirrels may require cooking longer than an hour. Check periodically for tenderness. If you don't you will have a hard time chewing the meat. After the meat is tender, add the veggies, carrots, potatoes, banana pepper, what ever you like. Cook until the veggies are done. An option you can use is, cook up your favorite pasta and serve over the pasta. (eliminate the potatoes). That's it, nice and simple ~ Good eating: John Squirrel Pie Clean, skin and cut two squirrels into small pieces. [UC] Football Game and Party TOMORROW, Saturday, October 10
Football Game and Party TOMORROW, Saturday, October 10. Tickets still available! Through the generosity of Penn's Athletic Department and Penn's Office of Community Affairs, next Saturday, October 10 is Community Day and the University City Republican Committee has obtained complimentary tickets to the Penn/Bucknell football game. Kickoff is at 1PM. In order to further entice you to this event, Denise and I are having people over for a pre-game tailgate from 10AM until 12PM, giving us plenty of time to walk over to Franklin Field. While we certainly do not know everyone on these University City listservs, we are always happy to meet our neighbors. Penn football is a great entertainment value if you have to pay for tickets. It is a great place to take kids. Franklin Field is one of the great venues of college football, Penn's home since 1895 and the Eagles home field for years. Many of the greatest all-time college and pro football stars have played on that turf, including myself. Also home to the Penn Relays, America's Greatest Track Meet, if you have not visited, you should. In my opinion one of the great neighborhood amenities of living in West Philly is the ready availability to great college sports at the Palestra and Franklin Field. Penn won its first Ivy League game of the season against Dartmouth today and were picked to be among the top teams. Bucknell normally brings a tough squad to Franklin Field. The game should be exciting. Even if you are not a football person, please stop over and share a drink and some food with us before you venture out for other activities. [UC] Tailgate before Penn/Villanova Football Saturday
Penn/Villanova Football at Franklin Field, Saturday Night, September 19, 7PM Come watch Penn knock off highly ranked Villanova here in West Philly at Franklin Field. Villanova is now ranked #2 in the country after beating Temple in the Mayor's Cup game and Lehigh last weekend. Last year's Penn/Villanova game went to overtime, and most of the recent contests have been very close. The game kicks off at 7PM and Denise and I are having people over for a pre-game tailgate from 4PM until 6PM, giving us plenty of time to walk over to Franklin Field. I certainly do not know everyone on these University City based listservs, but we are always happy to meet neighbors that we have not met before. It always amazes me that there are people in West Philly who are sports fans but have never been to Franklin Field. I think it is one of the amenities of living here. Tickets are cheap. At $10-12 each and half price for kids, it is a much better entertainment value than a movie. It is a great place to take kids. Franklin Field is one of the great venues of college football, Penn's home since 1895 and the Eagles home field for years, many of the greatest all-time college and pro football stars have played on that turf, including myself. We cannot offer free tickets to this game, but Penn is having its Community Day at Franklin Field for the Bucknell game on October 10, and the University City Republican Committee will be receiving tickets. We may be able to give a free ticket to that game to everyone who comes to this one (if we get them in time). Frankly we can give you a free ticket to that game whether you come to this one or not, but it will be easier to get it to you. RE: [UC] [Fwd: URGENT: We need action now]
I have a different read on the subject. I agree that you should lobby your legislators. We need to stop this tax increase. Philadelphias Mayor and City Council want to raise Philadelphias sales tax to 8%, fully 33% more than most of Pennsylvania. Actually a 100% increase over the current city sales tax. Fortunately, they need State Legislative approval to perpetrate this lunacy. This legislation will impact Pennsylvanias budget and will have an even bigger effect on Philadelphias economic health. They argue that they are not asking for state money, but only the tools to help themselves. Dont buy it. Increasing Philadelphias sales tax will hurt all Pennsylvanians. Democratic City Council President Anna Verna said it best when she acknowledged that The surrounding counties will be the beneficiary of the sales-tax because if you live in Philadelphia and have to buy a large item and it is taxable, youre going to go to another county where you may not have to pay that tax. The surrounding counties, however, are not just suburban Pennsylvania counties. New Jersey and Delaware are included. When buyers leave Philadelphia to go out of state to make purchases, Philadelphia loses its 2%, but Pennsylvania loses 6%, a much bigger amount. Additionally, increasing the sales tax is another incentive to buy online, where little of the sales tax ever gets into the state coffers. There is another way that Pennsylvania loses. Philadelphia should be an economic engine that helps drive Pennsylvania. Instead, due to mismanagement and corruption, it is a drag. The legislature is complicit in this problem, time and time again making special exceptions for Philadelphia, allowing our Mayor and City Council to take actions that have chased taxpayers, businesses and jobs out of the city and out of the region. Dont let them do it again. The City flat out spends too much money. All we need are temporary spending cuts. The Mayor says that everything will bounce back in five years. Philadelphia cannot continue to try and be all things to all people. It needs to focus on the core municipal responsibilities of public safety, sanitation and public education. There IS enough revenue in the budget to perform those functions efficiently without any tax increase. How much money has gone to support the Culture of Corruption? How many Democratic fundraisers, State Senators and City Treasurers must go to jail before changes are made? In the past few months, Mayor Nutter handed out over a million dollars in grants to businesses. In the best of times, wouldnt it make sense to use that money to lower every business taxes? Lets not kid anyone, though. Does anyone think that these grants were given out in a fair process? Did the recommendations of the Mayor and City Councilmen mean more than any objective evaluation? The City passes laws that increase its costs. The Slavery Disclosure Law requires any business, even new ones, to disclose whether the business ever owned slaves or benefitted from slavery. The 21st Century Minimum Wage Law requires that any business doing business with the City pay all of its employees 150% of minimum wage. Laws such as these shrink the number of bidders on City contracts and increase their costs. Change these and other laws before increasing taxes. There is much spent on programs that have nothing to do with public safety, sanitation or education. Dont get me wrong, most of these programs do good things. Bottom line, though, is that the City cannot afford to destroy its tax base to fund programs that are favored by special interest groups and help individual City Councilmen get reelected. Could the City save money by contracting out its trash removal and health care centers? My guess is we will never know because the administration and City Council will never seriously study the possibility. Shouldnt that at least be considered? Contact your State Senators, Democrat or Republican, and demand that Philadelphia be treated like any other Pennsylvania county. It is not a Philadelphia issue, but one that affects every Pennsylvanian. Make Philadelphia live within its means and preserve Pennsylvanias treasury. J. Matthew Wolfe Law Offices of J. Tomorrow, Saturday, October 4 at Noon Penn meets Dartmouth in football for the 178th time at Franklin Field. It is Penn's Ivy League opener and it is Penn's Community Day. That means that through the generosity of Penn's Athletic Department and Penn's Office of Community Affairs there are free tickets available through community groups. Incredibly, there are people who have never been to a Penn game at America's most historic stadium. I consider it to be one of the fine amenities of living in West Philly to have ready access to college sports. If free tickets are not enough, Denise will have a pre-game breakfast of Bagels and Bloody Mary's. We plan to receive guests from 10AM until 11:30 AM, giving us time to walk to Franklin Field for the Noon kickoff. I had not seen anyone announce this on any of these listservs, so I thought I would do so. I do not know everyone on these listservs, but I am always willing to meet neighbors. It is an opportunity to go to the game with a group if you are not inclined to go by yourself. If you are coming, let me know and I will make sure I have enough tickets. [UC] Can't we all just get along . . .
The discussions on these listservs has been very contentious lately. People arguing about the UCD. People arguing about Clark Park. People arguing about listservs, for God's sake. I was thinking about how we can bring people together and, perhaps for at least a brief period of time, quell the arguing. Then it hit me. Alcohol. Yes, alcohol could bring us together. To that end, Denise and I would like to invite anyone who would care to come over Saturday evening (August 4) after Romeo and Juliet in Clark Park. The play starts at 7PM. We live at 43rd and Regent, right across the street from Clark Park. Shakespeare in Clark Park seemed as good an excuse as we could think of for a party. RE: [SPAM] Re: [UC] How park planning really works
While I will not say that the vote by the membership to rescind the FOCP Board's endorsement of the plan was so close that we needed a recount, it was a lot closer than a 2-1 loss. It was a close vote. But it was a fair vote and it did not carry. The motion had actually been made at the annual meeting the previous year, and it was clear that the vote was going to be close. The Board first tried to simply ignore the vote, saying that the membership could not make decisions for the organization. Then they argued that the vote should be tabled, arguing that it had not been on the agenda, people did not know it was going to come to a vote and had left. This was after they refused to put it on the agenda and refused to give us a copy of the membership list to allow those of us opposed to the plan and supporting the motion to rescind the Board's endorsement of the plan to communicate with the membership. After another close vote, the motion was tabled. Over the course of the year, another membership meeting was scheduled and then cancelled. Just trying to being some historical accuracy to the discussion. Not really a big deal at this point. J. Matthew Wolfe Law Office of Alice W. The young reporter who got the facts mixed up certainly knew more than I did at that time! I knew it was happening; I went to one meeting; that was it. I know vastly more than Ray did about events as they developed during that year. I can testify with certainty there were FoCP members who regarded the renewal plan as UCD's plan. These feelings weren't technically accurate, because FoCP leadership had unambiguously endorsed the development of the renewal plan from the git-go and every association's policy is determined by its leadership, much as Penn's policy is determined by its leadership rather than by Ray. But feelings matter nonetheless. So many FoCP members felt that way, or were otherwise troubled with the plan, that Member Matt Wolfe recruited an insurgent slate of directors to run against the organization slate in the October 2002 election. I was one of that slate and many of us won, at a Membership Meeting with a strikingly large turnout. Not all us insurgents were opposed to the renewal plan per se, but we all agreed community concerns must be carefully considered in an ongoing process of inclusiveness and openness, and we committed to steer the association in that direction. Wolfe also introduced a motion to rescind FoCP's endorsement of the renewal plan. That motion failed by a 2-to-1 margin. That made it clear the membership was for the renewal plan. Since then, every honest person acknowledges the renewal plan is FoCP's plan. I started out befuddled, just like Ray. But I listened and learned. Today I know enough to see when he is wrong on this subject. -- Tony West haha -- all this, to convince yourself now that focp members didn't protest ucd's park renewal plan! and everyone is befuddled -- except you, tony west! RE: [SPAM] Re: [UC] How park planning really works
First, I really do not see much reason to get involved in this discussion as it has unfortunately become so ridiculous that I do not think that anyone's opinion has very much value at this point. I also can not say that I have been reading everything in the thread. Next, I did comment on a factual point since I felt that I had a better recollection on the issue and it was, frankly, an issue I felt strongly about at the time. Finally, I should probably make a note that both Glenn and Tony commented on my recollection. I will admit that as I get older my memory gets worse. They say it's the second thing to go? In any event, Tony says that the vote was maybe 3-2, rather than 2-1. I remember it being a fairly slim margin, but you know what, Tony may be right. In any event, it is certainly not worth arguing about. What was worth arguing about was the plan on the table at the time, and I argued about it as I felt was appropriate. Glenn comments on several lies by the FOCP leadership. Well, my recollection is a little different, but again not totally different. I would not characterize anything that went on as lies. It was a contentious issue, but I always felt that almost everyone was dealing with me with good intentions, although I questioned some of the tactics employed (they probably questioned mine). Specifically, what I remember being stated by the FOCP leadership, and the head of the UCD, was that the Master Plan was conceptual and much detail would be necessary to implement it. That detail was certainly still on the table when it came up. There was no money at that time specifically earmarked to implement the plan, although they certainly indicated that they were seeking money from the city's capital budget and from private sources to do so. It was also stated that even major portions of the plan would be open to re-evaluation as time went on, but that a master plan was necessary to move forward on both the fundraising effort and other implementation issues. For example, there is still a building for bathrooms in the plan, but they said that the bathroom component was low on the priority list and that, understanding the controversy about the issue, it might eventually be removed altogether. Generally, I think that this has moved as was stated. For example, the master plan refused to state that the merger of the playground and the tot lot would not decrease the amount of open green space. When the two spaces were merged, they probably did take up more space, but they did eliminate the old tot lot, so the loss of green space was minimized. The planning going on right now regarding the Farmer's Market and the re-design of the upper park is generally an attempt to add detail to the plan. There have been discussions on the basketball court. I would like it to stay within the current boundaries, rather than be expanded to a full-sized court, which removes green space and may open it up to league play. It looks like I will lose that fight, but I will get over it. No one has breathed a word about funding a new building for bathrooms. The money has come slowly. In any event, I thought I would chime in one more time only because there were factual issues raised, and did not think it was fair for me to make a comment and not respond to other factual statements where my silence could imply that I agreed with the characterizations. Understand, however, that I may very well do that in the future. Just because I do not comment, even when someone directs a comment or question directly to me, does not mean anything other than I either did not read it or did not think there was any value in commenting. There is another point that is very important. After all the disingenuous attempts to block your motion, I believe the acceptance of the UCD plan by the membership of FOCP carried by a slim margin because the proponents lied to the membership. You may remember that the proponents of the UCD plan claimed that it was too late to do a plan honestly including the participation of FOCP members or park stakeholders. They lied by insisting the plan was dead with no action scheduled. They also insisted that before any individual portions of the plan would be implemented in the future that the community would have plenty of opportunities to raise issues or questions. It reads as follows: Authorizing the Commissioner of Public Property to execute and deliver to the Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development, for nominal consideration, a deed conveying fee simple title to an approximately 30,000 square foot triangular shaped parcel of City-owned land with buildings and improvements thereon, located at the southeast corner of Market and 33rd Streets in the City of Philadelphia, for further conveyance. RE: [UC] Deer in Woodland Cemetary
You stated in your email: Can anyone offer some help with the situation described below? Please contact Opa Hamilton at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Best, R. Mimi Iijima I cannot help myself, as I am not a hunter, but I do have several friends who are and would be happy to supplement the game wardens to rid our neighborhood of this plague of deer. I will let them know to contact the Game Commission. Thanks for alerting me to this problem. -- There are deer in the cemetery on Woodland by VA Hosp., maybe you have been and seen them. I go often to see them. They stand on hind legs and nibble lower leaves of the trees, it is beautiful. They are there to see at dusk and early in the mornings. There are several fawns now. They all come and go via paths along the river. They have other hangouts too. Very unafraid, used to joggers, bikers, walkers, and cars. Two policeman were there also watching them tonight and told me that the deer will be killed by game wardens on May 23rd (this is May 20th!!!) They were concerned and wondered why no one is trying to stop them. I don't think anyone knows. I was hot online tonight and emailed a lot of animal activist groups, hopefully at least, someone that knows the ropes can check it out tomorrow I don't think the police would be pulling my leg about something like that. They seemed really concerned and appreciative of having deer here in the city. If you know any avenues, or interested people... Anything I hear I can forward. RE: [UC] John Fenton/UCD in election shock!
To: John Fenton University City District From: J. Matthew Wolfe Republican Ward Leader 27th Ward Date:May 16, 2007 I was delighted to learn of your new program assisting local political candidates and committees in today's Daily News (as well as on the listserv). It comes at an opportune time, as the University City Republican Committee is planning its Ronald Reagan Memorial Republican Rally for the Candidates in Clark Park for this coming July 21. We have arranged with the Philadelphia Orchestra to provide entertainment and expect several thousand loyal Republicans to attend. I would like to put in my order for services now, so that we can ensure a great party for the neighborhood. Since we expect a larger crowd than attended the Knox rally that you hosted in Malcolm X Park on Saturday, I would like to order two or three of the Moon Bounce inflatable kiddie amusements. We don't want those kids getting bored with the classical music program and disrupting it, do we? We will also need a large number of barbeque grills and coolers. It is hard for us to estimate the exact number we will need, so your advice in this area would be appreciated. This is where the University City District's experience and expertise in managing political rallies is particularly valuable. It was unclear from the article in the Daily News whether your services included the food for the barbeque, drinks or ice. Naturally, if these expenses can be borne by the University City District, that leaves us with more money to pay for TV commercials for our Republican candidates, direct mail and street money to get the Republican Party on track to take control again. Naturally, we will remember those who helped put us back on top. Finally, we appreciate your manpower for our political efforts. It is great that you can supplement the normal UCD staff with court-ordered community service participants. I did not even know that it was legal to use the court system for political purposes. Silly me! Again, I am writing now as I presume that with some advance notice you can order even more workers from the courts. Since crime rates are way up right now (thanks in large measure to mismanagement of the police by the current Democratic administration in City Hall), you should have a large number of offenders in different programs to throw into our effort. Thanks again. Your help in building a stronger Republican Party in University City is greatly appreciated. J. Matthew Wolfe The Law Office of Alice W. RE: [UC] Stop and Frisk
Don't worry too much about any Stop-n-Frisk policy. It is just pandering to the voters. Such a policy is s unconstitutional that any attempt to implement it will be beaten back in the courts so fast that it will quickly be a distant memory of another failed campaign promise. The fact that the candidate has raised the issue publicly will make it easier to recover civil damages. While the amount of those damages will not drain the city coffers as much as Street's Pay-to-Play culture of corruption, it is another cost of politics to the city. Matt Wolfe J. I, too, was disappointed in nutter at that moment, for failing to address the principle at stake (but maybe for reasons different than yours?) you concluded: Individual rights do not arise out of a vacuum, but are the privilege and product of a of a sane, responsive and just society that recognizes the legitimate limits of individual political rights against the complex and diverse demands of the greater good, which has the protection of everyone's rights to these same privileges. I think framing the question as 'individual' 'political' rights vs 'societal' 'greater good' rights is misleading. an individual's right to equality under the law is fundamental and needs protection -- precisely because we ARE a group, a society, that creates and applies these laws. it's like what al is always quoting (ben franklin?): those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither or something like that. also, something glenn said in an earlier post rocked: I would say our society forms policies driven by anger and too many of us have lost commitment to principals, which were supposedly treasured in our American myth. We have gotten so utilitarian that we've also lost our compassion. I would say that we have gotten so consumerist that we've lost our citizenship. ends justify means, outcomes trump process, competition beats cooperation... over and over again we (and our leaders) fail to ensure that those with the most access to power (however you want to define that) have the most responsibility to those who have the least. and that's a concept far older, and deeper, and universal, it seems to me, than franklin or monarchs, than the church of england or the u.s. bill of rights. and it seems to me our not respecting that concept is what gets us into our present difficulties in the first place. anyway, I've been seeing a lot of bob brady signs out and about. what do people here think of him? RE: [UC] From today's Inquirer: A chance to fix the city's broken zoning code
This ballot question, like most of them, is stupid. It amends the City Charter to form a committee that has no power to do anything. Couldn't the Mayor form such a committee to study anything he thinks needs study? Couldn't City Council do the same? Couldn't City Council hold hearings into the issue and compel people to come and testify? Hey, a few of us could form a committee, give it a fancy name, and study the city's zoning, issue a report with recommendations and it would have the same effect. You may have noticed the great impact of the last few Charter Changes, like the one that amended the City Charter to say that the citizens wanted our State Legislature to pass legislation that would allow Philadelphia to pass its own gun control laws. Or the one that amended the City Charter to say that the citizens wanted the city to consider putting in video surveillance cameras in the city. I am sure that the Charter Amendment also on the ballot this election to amend the charter to say that the citizens want the US out of Iraq will have a big impact on policy in Washington. The Charter Amendment that is not stupid, because it is dangerous, is the one that will amend the City Charter and allow elected officials to run for other offices without having to resign their current position. I think that they should do the jobs that we elected them to do, and if they are going to run for another office, they should let us put someone else in there who can do the job. Unfortunately, since there are nine questions on the ballot, it is well hidden. Matt Wolfe J. Matthew Wolfe The Law Office of Alice W. That rebirth has come despite an antiquated zoning code that practically defies sensible development and neighborhood preservation. On May 15, Philadelphians have the chance to vote for zoning reform. On Ballot Question No. 6, voters will be asked whether they support creation of an independent, citizen-based Zoning Reform Commission, which will spend a year creating sensible zoning rules that everyone must follow. The question is: Do we want the city to move forward? Or, like our current zoning code, are we a city stuck 50 years in the past? Philadelphia's future requires a yes vote on zoning reform. Philadelphia's current zoning code was enacted in 1957. It is nearly an impossible task to navigate all 600 pages of the current code, which present a nightmare of twists and turns that practically dare any developer, public or private, to build a project anywhere in Philadelphia. By contrast, a yes vote on Ballot Question No. 6 provides the opportunity for the city to create a modern code that establishes clear and predictable zoning rules that uniformly preserve neighborhood character while promoting positive growth. At the Reinvestment Fund, we understand the tensions that often exist between those who favor development and those who live in the neighborhoods where such progress will take place, often at the expense of the residents who have lived there for decades. The Reinvestment Fund has become a national leader in financing neighborhood revitalization because we understand the delicate balance that these too-often competing forces represent. Responsible development and neighborhood preservation can co-exist. It starts with the creation and enforcement of clear, predictable zoning rules that allow all sides the chance to know exactly what to expect before development begins. It creates opportunities for meaningful community input, and promotes informed and smart development decisions. That's the kind of zoning that Philadelphia needs, and that's what zoning reform is all about. On May 15, vote for Philadelphia's future. Support zoning reform. Vote yes on Ballot Question No. 6. RE: [UC] New Marketing Campaign
Any sentiment out there to change from the contrived “University City” to the historically correct (or at least somewhat historically correct) name of “Blockley,” which was the name of the estate of an early property owner - I think named form his home in England - and later incorporated in the name of Blockley Township, an area which encompassed much of the area prior to the City-County consolidation in 1854? This core is almost entirely African American today, although it was more diverse racially in the past; class identity is a more enduring characterization of the various West Philly neighborhoods than race is. Cobbs Creek is largely Black, and also the most fragile middle-class neighborhood in West Philadelphia. The other three middle-class neighborhoods contain substantial non-Black populations, although those all decreased in the latest census, with the possible exception of University City, which saw a strong increase in Asian residents.. Southwest Philly is hard to separate from South Philly, in some ways. In other ways, it is hard to separate from West Philly, to which it is tied by many commercial, infrastructural and administrative links. Its class and racial divides are also more similar to West Philly's than to South Philly's in my judgement. WHERE WE LIVE is much larger than a neighborhood of a dozen blocks or so. There should be a name for it. It should include people who come from adjacent neighborhoods to work in this one. It should specifically include people who cut across class lines, because cutting across class lines is what makes cities work. In other words, the dweller in Haddington who staffs a convenience store in University City is part of the same West Philadelphia economy whereby a dweller in University City teaches in a grade school in Haddington. -- Tony West - Original Message - From: S. [UC] Comlimentary Tickets for Penn/Brown
Hot off the presses! Penn, through its office of Community Affairs, has generously made 50 tickets to Saturday night's Penn/Brown game. Although I do not know everyone on these neighborhood listservs, we are always happy to meet new neighbors. As a previous email stated, Denise and I are having a pre-game reception this Saturday, March 3 from 4PM until 6PM, leaving us plenty of time to get to the 7PM tip-off at the Palestra. It should be a great college game, giving Penn some momentum going into the March Madness of the NCAA Tournament (presuming they win a game or two this weekend). Although Penn basketball games are cheap, since some of you are even cheaper, we expect to see you. Although I should have enough tickets for everyone, just in case there is an overwhelming response, let me know if you want tickets and how many. It is not necessary to annoy me with emails telling me that you can not come, only if you need tickets. See you Saturday, hopefully. [UC] Party and Basketball Game Saturday
Denise and I are inviting people over on Saturday evening, March 3, from 4PM until 6PM before the Penn/Brown basketball game at the Palestra. While I do not know everyone on these listservs, we are always eager to meet our neighbors. We hope you can stop over. Denise and I are big fans of basketball in general and season ticket holders for Penn. Penn is having another great year. Depending on what happens at Friday evening's game with Yale, they could clinch the Ivy League Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a win against Brown on Saturday. The Palestra is America's greatest basketball venue. College basketball, with the great teams, fans and bands is a great experience for all ages. And we live within walking distance. Sometimes we can get complimentary tickets through the generosity of Penn's Office of Community Affairs. They had their Community Night game earlier in the year and we gave away over 100 tickets. Just so it is clear, we do NOT have complimentary tickets this time, but hopefully some of you who have taken advantage of their free offers in the past have become fans and will attend. That is at least part of their motivation in providing tickets for Community Night. Tickets are only $14 each, with children (12 and under) and seniors (65 and older) half price ($7 for the mathematically challenged). This is a great entertainment value. What else are you going to do on Saturday night? Go to a movie? Watch TV? Boring! If you might be inclined to go to a game, but did not have anyone to go with, come with us. RE: [UC] last day to register to vote
To expand on Al's warning, you should try and get your registration forms delivered to the City Commissioners today. Their office at Delaware and Spring Garden will be open until midnight tonight. Anyone who wishes to register Republican should contact me by email or phone (215-387-7300) and I can get you a form and see to it that it is taken to the Commissioner's office. You may also drop them in my mail slot (4256 Regent Square). RE: [UC] My jerk neighbors
Dear Neighbors: There seems to be a big problem in our neighborhood regarding trash cans being stolen. In an effort to assist my neighbors, I am announcing that I am starting a business venture in selling used trash cans in our neighborhood. No longer will you have to drive all the way to Home Depot or other establishments and waste your money no new trash cans. I have accumulated a large and diverse supply of used ones, some of which already have addresses written on them. If you are lucky enough to have an address that is in our current inventory, we can also save you the time and trouble of personalizing your own. I also offer a discount on used trash cans that are emblazoned with an address other than yours. If we do not have the sort of trash can you are looking for, it does not normally take more than a few days to add one to our inventory that conforms to your specific needs. I am looking forward to working with you to help make our neighborhood a cleaner, neater place. Am I right in my impression that this apparent groundbreaking has been kept consipicuously silent? I also recall the site being described as an out of the way corner of Fairmount Park. Now that I know the specific site I can say that is out and out shit. They are using prime park land for other purposes. While the merits of the competing land uses can be debated, it should have been framed as such. Maybe its because a corner of land that was a familiar part of my regular routine has now been abruptly and fundamentally altered, but this beginning feels rather ominous. [UC] Penn/Harvard Game Tickets
Through the generosity of Penn's Office of Community Affairs, there are free tickets available for tonight's Penn/Harvard basketball game at the Palestra. They were kind enough to provide me with some tickets for distribution. I am happy to disburse them as the supply lasts. The Palestra is a great place to watch a game and is right here in our neighborhood. Penn has already won the Ivy League Championship. If you have not been there, here is a good opportunity to become a fan. It is also a child-friendly environment. At free the price can not be beat as an entertainment value. Penn's students are on spring break, so the team could use some extra voices to cheer it on. The game is at 7PM. I am having a number of people from the neighborhood over before the game for dinner and drinks. We will be receiving guests from 4PM until 6PM, giving us plenty of time to walk over to the Palestra. While I do not know everyone on this listserv, I am always happy to make new acquaintences. Whether you can make the game or not, feel free to stop over before hand. If you cannot make dinner but want to go to the game, stop over and I can give you tickets or leave them at the will call window. If you always wanted to get to a game but did not want to go by yourself, this is a good opportunity to go over with a group. I hope you can make it. I'd like to replace it with a dummy trash can which will detonate an exploding dye and perfume bomb if lifted from the ground, covering the thief with a mixture of brightly colored orange paint and a half gallon of Old Spice in the way that banks identify robbers with booby trapped bags of loot. Also, if this were connected to a web-cam I could post photos of the thief for purposes of public ridicule. One of my favorite examples of Jannie's ethics was apparent when bill 629 came up for consideration, and the UCCC took the extraordinary step of inviting the general public, along with Blackwell, to hear public opinion on it. At the end there was a general vote. The only person to vote in favor of the billboards was the lawyer representing the billboard companies (the real sponsor of the bill). At least 75 people were opposed. Jannie knew that a lot of people there were representatives from local community groups, so each no vote represented a larger opinion. Jannie voted in favor of the bill anyway. John Street, in one of his few useful actions as mayor, vetoed it. Kind of funny, eh? Today William H. Magill wrote: Council has apparently completely exempted themselves from any consideration of ethics. [UC] Penn/Harvard Basketball Game Saturday at the Palestra
This coming Saturday, March 5, is the final Penn basketball game at the Palestra for the season. The game kicks off at 7PM and the opponent is Harvard. It is Senior Night, so they will be honoring the seniors in their last home game. Penn clinched the Ivy League Championship last weekend (becoming the first team in the nation with a berth in the NCAA Tournament) and will be trying to gain some momentum for the tournament. The Palestra is the finest place in the country to watch basketball and IS Americas most historic basketball arena. Lucky for me, I live in West Philly and do not miss many games there during the season. If you are on this listserv, you probably live here too. Penn is having a particularly good season this year. You should try and come to the game. I have always felt that one of the amenities of living in West Philly is that Penn's sporting events are in walking distance. It amazes me that so many of my neighbors have never been to the Palestra. In order to encourage your attendance, we will be receiving guests from 4PM until 6PM for dinner and refreshments. That will give us plenty of time to get to the game by tip off. I certainly do not know everyone on this listserv, but I am always willing to meet and entertain neighbors. If you know anyone who would like to come, bring them along. Kids are welcome both to our house as well as to Palestra for the game. The game is unlikely to sell-out since Penns spring break starts the day before. RE: [UC] A little consistency, please... or, maybe, an explanation
Dear Al: I am on the SHCA Board, but I am not on the Zoning Committee. I doubt if the Zoning Committee has taken this issue up as of yet, as it normally moves when a zoning change request is filed. It is possible that they have been preliminarily approached by Penn or a developer, but I cannot say that I have heard about it at either a board or executive board meeting that I have attended. To the best of my knowledge, the board has no official position on this subject. While I have heard nothing official regarding this, I have for some time heard that Penn was thinking about developing the old College of Physicians property on the southwest corner of 42nd and Pine into condos. Speaking personally, my first impression would be favorable. I think that your characterizations of the SHCA's zoning committee's position are over generalized, but regardless I am by no means anti-development. I do think generally that converting single family homes into apartments is not in the best interests of the neighborhood (and in this market is probably not economical). A project like this, however, returns a property to residential in a residential area. Zoning makes sense and divisions between uses are normally better for everyone. People do not want to live next to factories. Businesses tend to do better when grouped together so that customers of one become customers of many. This property was originally the Elsinor mansion, owned by a family that owned a cigar/tobacco company. At some point, the College of Physicians took over the property and built the office building. The middle of a residential neighborhood is not the right place for an office building. A school might work there, but the most logical use would be as apartments of condominiums. There is already onsite parking (which I think is a vastly overblown issue in new developments), so that is not a fight in this case. It would seem to be a better use. The devil, of course, is in the details. I have no idea how far along a proposal for this is, presuming that the rumors I have heard are true. It is unlikely that Penn will use a stealth approach to this and the SHCA board and zoning meetings are open. Sincerely, Matt Wolfe -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED]Sent: Thursday, February 10, 2005 8:39 AMTo: UnivCity@list.purple.comSubject: [UC] A little consistency, please... or, maybe, an explanation Today's DP included a story about a Penn Board of Trustees meeting from which the following is excerpted: The trustees will also discuss the conversion of a University-owned office building at 42nd and Pine streets into condominiums. Construction for the project -- which will be aimed at accommodating small families -- will begin in the spring. I assumethey're referring to the sprawlingbuilding on the northwest corner. Personally, I don't object to this conversion in principle -- it may well be a good use for the property and an asset to the neighborhood; and I don't have "standing" anyway because I'm far enough away from it to not be "detrimentally harmed" by this usage. However, the Spruce Hill Community Association, whose zoning committee seems to oppose any conversions to multi-family use and/or any projects that may increase the population density, appears to have been mute on this project. If so (and if not, please correct me), could it be that they are currying favor with that 800-lb gorilla? Again. From the PTC website (www.patransit.org)We Won a Victory Yesterday But Public Transit Remains in Serious Peril Yesterday, Governor Rendell decided to ask the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and its counterpart in Pittsburgh to transfer (or in bureaucratese, "flex") federal highway funds to SEPTA and other transit agencies in the state. This is a great victory for us as it should remove the imminent threat of draconian fare increase and service reductions at SEPTA, the Port Authority of Pittsburgh and other transit agencies. The urgency we have brought to this issue, the broad coalition we have created, and the prospect of 5,000 people traveling to Harrisburg to rally for public transit on Monday has made it politically impossible for the Governor to allow riders to suffer from the drastic proposals for balancing their budget that our transit agencies have put forward Unfortunately the news is not all good. The long term prospects for transit funding are still uncertain and that the transit rally scheduled for Monday, February 14th will continue as planned. The Governor's decision to flex highway funds was almost an act of desperation, brought about by the failure of the state legislature to enact the long term dedicated funding for transit we need. Flexing highway funds only provides the transit agencies with the money they need through June 30. Without public pressure, the prospects of gaining sufficient funding for next year and for the long term are dim. [UC] RE: Synergy : Universities as good neighbors
While Liz is praising Drexel, I thought it would be nice to point out another program that they have been involved in that helps our local kids. Squash Smarts is a program housed at Drexel that combines coaching local kids in squash, tutoring for academics and mentoring them. Drexel could not have been more helpful and supportive of this program. Campion Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2005 1:24 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; UnivCity@list.purple.com Subject: Synergy : Universities as good neighbors A few weeks ago Sean Joyce, the Corporate Sales Manager Special Events guy for Drexel University Athletics posted a basketball trivia question with a prize of two tickets. I entered the contest and also opened a conversation, with Sean, about helping some of the Youth Groups in University City. Sean, and Drexel, came through like super heroes. So far, Drexel has provided blocks of tickets for three games. Among the folks who benefited were SFDS basketball players (and families) An After-school program A Friday Night-out-for-Teens program BSA Troop 152 plus some Ventures and Cubs Scouts. Families and a few neighbors of the kids. Drexel also benefited because empty seats were filled by cheering new fans. Sean and Drexel went out of their way to make things convenient and fun for the kids. They hooked us up with some free parking and included the kids in center court contests for prizes. They also printed up signs welcoming the kids to the DAC and directing them to their sections. At game one, an exciting men's game, at least 10 of our kids walked away with free T-shirts. This past Friday night several of the kids were involved in some half-time activities on the court. One young teen girl won a $50.00 gift certificate to the Spaghetti Warehouse. She has never been there and is delighted to be able to treat her family to a second outing, because of Drexel's generosity. Another little girl won two free Cheese steaks from Abner's. Several others caught T shirts thrown into the stands. Sean made sure that free posters were available. The kids were instructed that they could bring $5.00, so they could enjoy dinner at the 7 PM game. The Drexel special is a Hot Dog, Soft Drink and Chips for only $3.25, bargain priced for even modest incomes. Most kids had money left for dessert (candy) or Nachos. Everyone claimed to have a great time and I believe that exposure to college facilities provides inspiration and incentives for these kids to maximize their opportunities in grade school and high school with college as a goal. Game three competed with some heavy-duty TV football, so fewer parents were available to take their kids to the game, but some of the kids who made it, were repeats, having enjoyed the earlier games. I can not thank Sean or Drexel enough. At least 100 children have had the opportunity for safe fun; have been exposed to a more advanced level of basketball; enjoyed a live spectator experience; and visited a college Campus. Many did so accompanied by parents, other family members and friends. Here are links if anyone else wants info on the Drexel Dragons. www.DREXELDRAGONS.com www.DACPACK.com Outsiders can see men's game for $10.00 / ticket. Women's games are free. They are good sporting events in a good facility. The SFDS kids have, in the past, enjoyed such outings through PENN, at the Palestra. We hope to make trips to both schools an annual treat, and maybe add in USP games. The experience is a win-win for all. The kids get an affordable family outing and the schools get new, enthusiastic fans. Best! Liz You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. [UC] Kalvin Kahn's Death
I was informed by Kalvin's foster daughter of his passing. He died on Sunday, January 9. Kalvin lived in this neighborhood for many years. He was a retired attorney and a Penn graduate. He was a writer and an animal rights activist. He was a sweet and sincere guy who was very active up until the time of his death. He will be missed by all who knew him. His funeral will be tomorrow, January 13 at 1:00 P.M. at a gravesite service at Shalom Cemeteries at 25 Byberry Road, which is in Northeast Philly near the City boundary with Montgomery County. [UC] West Catholic Basketball
If anyone around here enjoys high school sports, you might want to check out the West Catholic Basketball Tournament tonight (Thursday, December 30). The championship game will begin at 6:30 PM between host West Catholic and Bishop McDevitt. The third place game will begin at 5PM between Wyncote Academy and Mercy Vocational. Enter through the parking lot off of 46th Street between Chestnut and Ludlow and enter through the back door of the school. It's cheap at $5 per person. I went to the semi-final games yesterday, motivated by the chance to see a team from the finest high school in the state, Bishop McDevitt (my alma mater), play in my backyard. It was good to see some athletes motivated by things other than money. Hopefully, when McDevitt leaves West Philly to go home they will take the championship trophy with them. RE: [UC] Are You Aware of UPenn's 'First Thursday' public meetings?
I am familiar with the First Thursday meetings. They are promoted at the very least to community groups in West Philly. I can not speak to the breadth of the promotion, but they are not hiding them. In attendance are representatives of most of the West Philly/U City community groups, but there are others and anyone can attend. I do not recall any discussion of demolishing Convention Hall. I would have remembered that and certainly would have expressed an opinion against it. I cannot say, however, that I am at every meeting or at the meetings from start to finish. I do remember raising the issue when someone from Penn was speaking regarding all of Penn's projects. My point was that they botched the PGH site and I did not want to see the same on the Civic Center site. The response was that Penn understood the problems with PGH, but CHOP had a different view and liked the walled city approach to design. While I do not believe that minutes are taken, there are agendas. Again, I do not remember seeing anything about Convention Hall on the agenda. That does not mean it was not there, but I do not remember. I hope that this is helpful. Hello, I'm curious about Penn's 'First Thursday' community meetings, alluded to by Penn Community Relations Director Glenn Bryan in a University City Review article in the November 24 edition. Are you familiar with these meetings? Are they well-promoted? How many people are typically in attendance? What is the nature of the meetings? I'm wondering because of Mr. Bryan's claim that there was no real opposition or major feedback to Penn's plans to demolish Convention Hall and the Commercial Museum, as he is quoted in the Review. I would also be very interested in hearing, by private email if it's inappropriate to clutter this list, from anyone who attended a First Thursday meeting where UPenn's plans for the Civic Center properties were discussed. I ran a poll in the University City section of PhillyBlog and was surprised that out of 12 poll responses, not one respondent was aware of the meetings. That surprised me, as the folks posting in that forum are generally fairly much involved in the community. On the other hand I do personally know one person who is aware and has attended some of these meetings. [UC] Penn/Harvard Game
A battle of the titans this Saturday, NOVEMBER 13 at Franklin Field. The undefeated Harvard Johns (one of the nicknames actually lamer than the Quakers) roll into Philadelphia to try and take home the Ivy League title from its rightful home. Penn is riding a 20 game Ivy League winning streak. Two tough teams should yield one great game. Kickoff is at 1PM. Whether you can make the game or not, we would love to have you come over for brunch from 10PM until 12PM. This gives us plenty of time to walk to Franklin Field. One of the many nice things about living in West Philly is proximity to things at Penn, be it theater or sports. If you would like to go to the game but do not want to go by yourself, there will be a group going over. I do not know everyone on the listserv, but feel free to come over and introduce yourself. It never hurts to meet neighbors. No need to RSVP. RE: [UC] Absentee Ballots?
Title: Absentee Ballots? I have been hearing the same things about absentee ballot problems. Five people (four Republicans and one Democrat) have contacted me with information that they applied for absentee ballots weeks ago and had still not received them. I checked with the Commissioner's office and was told that they had no record of an application from one and that the other four had been sent out, but possibly not until last weekend. Two of them arrived two days ago and were returned. The other two had not been received as of last night. As much as I would like to have said that this was a conspiracy by the two Democratic Commissioners to suppress the Republican vote, I suspect that it is simply overwork and incompetence. If we ever elect a majority of Republicans to the City Commission, we could expect a step up in competence. You should let your friends know that due to the large number of new registrations, the state Bureau of Elections has made some important changes in the election day procedures to make things flow more smoothly and to accomodate the large numbers of people who want to vote. For this election, only Republicans will vote on November 2nd, only Democrats will vote on November 3rd and on November 4th non-partisans and anyone who had not voted before will vote. I think it will hurt the Republican chances of taking Pennsylvania as we have to vote first and the Democrats will then have a pretty good idea of how many votes they will need to overcome the Repulican vote. We'll see how it works. Remember to remind your non-Republican friends that they will vote on either November 3rd or November 4th. I've found that on most blocks in University City, you don't even have to ring doorbells -- if a household is participating, there's someone out on the porch, and usually some type of decoration, even if it's only a lit-up pumpkin. If you want kids to come to your block, decorate, sit out on your porch or front steps, and try to get some of your neighbors to do the same. "We know how to build at lower cost and in faster times, because we have done so before."Malobrodsky referred to the company's May installation of a fully operational wireless "hot zone" in downtown Palo Alto, Calif., a mile away from Stanford University. However, Philadelphia's chief information officer, Dianah Neff, warned that Palo Alto could not be directly compared to Philadelphia."Palo Alto is not a dense metropolitan city and will have different requirements for the number of devices. They could also be using a different technology," Neff said. However, AnchorFree is confident that its plan could work in Philadelphia."While wireless mesh technology -- which the city plans on using -- can only be used outside, our networks will be functional inside as well," Malobrodsky said.Company spokesman Denis Hiller noted that, unlike the city's plan, AnchorFree plans to include both indoor and outdoor transmitters."We have a patent-pending methodology," Hiller said. "We'll talk to business owners, churches, residents, so we can strategically place our transmitters for maximum effect. We want everybody in the city to go wireless."AnchorFree's proposal will be reviewed by the Wireless Philadelphia Executive Committee, which is responsible for overseeing the planning and installation of the municipal wireless project."The committee is looking at multiple governance models, sustainability options, including types of services and fees, plus privacy and security issues," said Neff, the committee chairman.Neff and other city officials have also participated in talks with local telecommunications companies to determine corporate participation in the project. The Wireless Philadelphia committee is expected to submit a recommendation to Mayor John Street by December.

RE: [UC] [[volta] Clear Channel for Roadkill]
Just to clear up any misconception regarding ClearChannel involvement with the Boyd Theater (the old Sameric at 19th Chestnut), they have not purchased the theater. There is a proposal that would have ClearChannel investing in and leasing the theater for multi-use purposes, including musical, theater and film productions. They are willing to work with the Friends of the Boyd, the group that I am involved with, towards a restoration of the theater to its Art Deco origins and for a program of partial public use of the theater. There are many obstacles to be hurdled, however, in that to make a reconstruction of the stagehouse work a parking lot behind the theater must be purchased and there a component of public money that is still not in place. In the latest incident, on Raleighs G105 station, September 22 and 23, morning talk show hosts joked about harassing cyclists, urged listeners to call in with stories of how they had harassed cyclists, and provided suggestions of how to run cyclists off the road. One host suggested pelting cyclists with empty Yoo-Hoo bottles. Calls came in from listeners who agreed with him, and said that they would take similar action. A show intern discussed a man in her neighborhood who shoots a pellet gun at cyclists as they ride by his house, attempting to hit their tires to make them crash. According to a listener quoted in the October 1 Raleigh News Observer (http://newsobserver.com/news/story/2911339p-2677916c.html), One caller said her dad had purposely hit a biker on the road on the way to church one Sunday and kept on going. That got laughs. Bob (one of the hosts) thought that was funny. And Bob said he'd love to be on a motorcycle and driving it down a bike lane. Because he didn't think bikers should be allowed on the road. He said they should ride on the sidewalk. The offending broadcasts come on the heels of similar broadcasts on Clear Channel stations in Houston and Cleveland encouraging motorists to taunt or even strike cyclists. Clear Channel owns some 1,200 radio stations across the country that regularly share content with each other. Cyclists across the nation have reacted with furor to reports of these broadcasts, which have been widely disseminated on the Internet, condemning the radio stations for their reprehensible incitement of violence. Many have expressed fears that the incidents could inspire some deranged individual to commit an act of violence against bicyclists. League Position: The League condemns in the strongest possible terms the promotion of violence and harassment against bicyclists as well as pedestrians. With about 700 cyclists, including 200 children, and 5,000 pedestrians killed every year in traffic crashes, it is clear that traffic safety is a very serious issue. The League urges motorists and bicyclists to share the road and to respect the rules of the road. State and local transportation authorities need to do more to protect cyclists and pedestrians and there is a profound need for more education for motorists to be conscious of the need to share the road with cyclists and pedestrians. http
[UC] RE: Halloween
The best place to take kids on Halloween is the 4200 block of Regent Square. For the last 30-40 years we have closed off the street on Halloween for safe Trick or Treating and normally have tables set up at some point to give out hot dogs, lemonade and cupcakes to the kids. Many decorate their homes for the season and a few childish residents even dress up in costume. All are welcome. _ Support Sam Katz for Mayor J. Matthew Wolfe Law Office of Alice W. [UC] Free Tickets to the Penn-Duquesne Game
Saturday evening (September 20) Penn will play Duquesne in football at Franklin Field. Both of these teams have been very successful in their respective leagues over the last few years, Penn in the Ivy League and Duquesne in the Metro-Atlantic Conference. It should be a good game. Penn's Athletic Department, through its Office of Community Affairs, will be holding its Second Annual West Philadelphia Community Night and is making tickets available for free for its neighbors. I have a supply of these tickets and can get them to you if you would like to attend. There are many in West Philly who have lived here for years but have never been to a game at Franklin Field. These games are a lot of fun, especially when Penn is successful. No alcohol is sold, making it a great environment for kids. Maybe they will even want to go to an Ivy League school when they grow up if they become fans early. Indeed, one of the many amenities of living in West Philly is to have wonderful entertainment venues at our doorstep. In addition, I am having some friends over for some refreshments before the game. Anyone is welcome to stop over. It will also be a convenient way to distribute tickets. This email is going into several listservs that include many in our neighborhood, and I certainly do not know everyone on these listserves. I hope that no one will feel shy about coming over. I find that it is always good to meet more of our neighbors and you are welcome. [UC] Katz Lawn Signs
We now have a supply of Katz for Mayor Lawn signs available for distribution. They come in two varieties: regular Katz for Mayor and Democrats for Katz. They go very well in our small University City lawns. We also have regular posters, suitable for placement in windows, on doors, porches, etc. These come in five varieties: regular Katz for Mayor, Democrats for Katz, Women for Katz, Pride for Katz and Students for Katz. In addition we have a supply of buttons, stickers, brochures and tabloids. We are the largest supplier of official Katz for Mayor materials in West Philadelphia and one of the largest suppliers on the East Coast. We offer a free delivery service to most locations in West Philadelphia. Just let us know the location you want a lawn sign placed and we should be able to have it placed there within a few days. We ask that any roommates be made aware of the impending sign so that they know that it is there legitimately. If you are a wealthy landowner controlling several properties, you can let your tenants know that a sign is coming and that if they don't like it they will be evicted (just kidding). We can deliver posters and other materials. Let us know where it can be left (e.g. porch, back yard, vestibule, etc.) Feel free to visit the address below to pick up materials or visit the local Katz for Mayor headquarters at 4035 Chestnut Street. It is uncertain as to when it will be staffed as it just opened, but we are working on that. The deadline for voter registration is October 6. We can provide voter registration forms as well as absentee ballot forms. You may drop completed forms in the mail slot at 4256 Regent Square (on 43rd Street between Chester and Woodland Avenues) and they will be hand delivered to the City Commissioner's Office. _ Support Sam Katz for Mayor J. [UC] FW: [grapevine] Sam Katz letter
Title: Sam Katz letter Below is a letter that was forwarded to me that shows Sam Katz's position on a preservation/development issue of some importance, specifically the plan to demolish three buildings on Sansom Street and to construct a parking garage, movie theater and restaurant complex on Walnut Street near Rittenhouse Square. There are people on both sides of this specific issue, but it does give some insight into Sam's general attitude towards both development and preservation issues. Whether you agree or disagree, here it is. It is probably well known that I am a Katz supporter, so it may not surprise anyone if I say that on this issue, I agree with Sam. September 10, 2003 Mr. Joseph P. Egan Executive Director Philadelphia Parking Authority 3101 Market Street Philadelphia, PA 19104 Dear Mr. Egan: I am writing to express my concern about the parking garage and movie theater development that the Parking Authority proposes to develop at 19th and Walnut Streets. This is a very significant project for Philadelphia and one that concerns many people in the Rittenhouse Square area and in the historic preservation community and our city at large. A primary reason for my concern is the importance of this site. In 1961, in her landmark book, "The Death and Life of Great American Cities," Jane Jacobs described Rittenhouse Square as "a beloved, successful, much-used park, one of Philadelphia's greatest assets today, the center of a fashionable neighborhood - in deed the only old neighborhood in Philadelphia which is spontaneously rehabilitating its edges..." Forty years later, it is even more of a jewel, and an economic engine as well. This is reflected by the fact that between1997-2002, resale value of residences in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood increased by 108%. As you have said, it is one of the finest development sites in Philadelphia. We have an obligation to make sure that what is put here will make a lasting contribution to the City. We want to be sure that future citizens of Philadelphia will want to preserve what we build today with the same dedication that we have for our historic buildings. I am doubtful that a parking garage with a movie theater and shops below, constitutes the highest and best use for this premier site. As you know, the project requires the demolition of three buildings in the Rittenhouse- Fitler Historic District. All three buildings have distinctive architectural qualities such as bay windows, stone trim, classical stonework surrounding the doorways, and many other features that are simply not found in buildings of today, and therefore considered "significant" and "contributing" to the area's historic infrastructure. The buildings subject to demolition contribute to the city's pedestrian scale and make secondary streets like Sansom Street among the most interesting places in the City to walk. The historic character of Philadelphia is what makes Philadelphia, and Center City in particular, so distinctive. This character is one of Philadelphia's greatest competitive advantages for attracting new residents, businesses and visitors, so decisions that may impact it must be considered in the scope of long-term economic goals. In addition, older buildings like these provide an important balance in the economic development of Center City by providing spaces for small businesses and shops to locate. All three buildings are in workable condition and could be renovated for economic uses that will contribute to the vitality of Center City and Sansom Street. I know that you inherited this situation from previous Parking Authority administrations when you were named executive director in May. As you are well aware, the sorry record of development for the Parking Authority laid down by your predecessors does not inspire confidence. Of particular concern is the experience at 8th and Market where government agencies have poured millions of dollars into a hole. I am certain that, given your extensive experience with City development, you will be able to sort out the disorder of the Authority's ill-conceived projects. I am excited about the progressive initiatives you are planning at the Authority
RE: [UC] [john@bikemap.com: Penn cracking down (illegally) on bikes!]
This is a moderately interesting discussion. As someone who does not own a car and rides a bike for transportation, here are my thoughts: A. If Penn is threatening to break locks and confiscate bikes (i.e. steal them), this practice should be stopped. So long as bikes are not blocking sidewalks or meters, they should be encouraged to park and lock them at parking meters. Meters are secure and convenient. Allowing bikers to use them encourages biking, which is good for everyone. B. People should not ride bikes on the sidewalks. Penn should be applauded for enforcing the laws in that area. Bikes on the sidewalk are a major hazard to pedestrians and are less safe for the bikers themselves in that they increase their chances of an accident verses traveling in the street. C. Bike lanes should be kept clear from cars. It is dangerous to have to swerve into the travel lanes, particularly when the lanes are narrowed by the idiot who is parked blocking the bike lane in the first place. As someone pointed out, this is an even bigger problem where there are trolley tracks. D. Someone suggested an eastbound bike lane on Walnut Street. I am sure they were being pro-biker in making that suggestion, but it is a bad one. Bikers need to restrict themselves to traveling on the right side of the lane moving in the direction of the traffic. It gives cars an opportunity to see you when they approach you. When you are coming heading into the traffic there is very little opportunity for a car to anticipate you and adjust. Pedestrians are also not looking in that direction when they cross the street. I find that as a biker that the most dangerous times I have had is when a biker who does not know the rules of the road comes barreling down on me driving on the wrong side of the street. These people are never wearing a helmet and seem surprised to see me. Thus far I have avoided them, but there have been more close calls than with these bikers than with ignorant automobile drivers. _ Support Sam Katz for Mayor J. Matthew Wolfe Law Office of Alice W. [UC] Fresh Grocer Liquor License
Finally a little good news. Our options for purchasing libations will expand soon as The Freshgrocer's liquor license application has finally been approved. Another amenity for our neighborhood thanks to Penn, the owner of the property. From today's Daily Pennsylvanian: Freshgrocer attains alcohol license in time for Fling 2003 By Caroline DubeMarch 31, 2003 Students over 21 will soon be able to check one more item off their grocery lists with a visit to The Freshgrocer. The grocery store, located at 40th and Walnut streets, will begin serving beer next month after its application for a beer license was recently approved. The license officially goes into effect at the start of April, but because of arrangements with beer distributors, officials at The Freshgrocer said alcohol will not be on the shelves for another two weeks -- just in time for Spring Fling. "We're quite excited," said Pat Burns, owner of The Freshgrocer. "I think the beer sales in conjunction with Spring Fling weekend will be especially helpful in kicking this off and attracting kids looking to drink a lot without going a long way." The Freshgrocer originally applied for the beer license over a year ago, but the application process was stalled until recently, when University officials and The Freshgrocer's owners were able to reach an agreement. Under Pennsylvania law, the license stipulates that The Freshgrocer may sell beer or beer-related products to be consumed on the premises. Additionally, up to 192 fluid ounces -- nearly five 40-ounce bottles -- of alcohol can be purchased to carry out. Sales of hard alcohol and wine, however, will not be permitted. University officials said the license development would not only improve business for The Freshgrocer, but would also be beneficial for the University community. "We think this will really help with the development of 40th Street," Executive Vice President Clifford Stanley said. "I just discovered The Freshgrocer last week and was really struck by the overwhelming need for carry-out malt beverages." Most students seemed equally positive about the license. "I think it's the single best idea in the history of the world," College junior Michelle Dembiski said. Although Dembiski is not 21 years old yet, she is confident the license will help make alcohol more accessible to her. "No one should have to walk all the way to 41st and Market for booze," College sophomore Anthony Pants added. "It's way sketchy there." Regulars of the area just outside of the grocery store were also supportive. "When students get drunk, they're more generous," said one man holding a door open who asked not to be identified. Freshgrocer officials said the beer sales at the popular late-night destination will be convenient. "Students frequently come for snacks or maybe condoms on their way home from places like Smoke's," Burns said. "Now, we can take out the middle step and offer one-stop shopping." In related news, The Freshgrocer was recently cleared of all charges related to the alleged pouring of motor oil on a Princeton debater. _ Support Sam Katz for Mayor J. It was only a few years ago that this neighborhood turned down development of a senior citizen complex at 47th and Warrington, in favor of a restaurant. (It would generate too much traffic, it wouldn't fit with the existing architecture, it would harm the long-range development of Baltimore Ave.) Hi, Fred, I think it was a little more complex than that. First, one former neighbor tried to ramrod things through and force the Sr. apts., the UC New School and Abbraccio WITH a liquor license to all find a way, amongst themselves, to share the SAME space (probably many laws against a grade school and an alcohol-selling restaurant being together!). Then Cedar Park Neighbors had each group make a presentation, and we asked them some to-the-point financial questions. The school just kept telling us how wonderful they were, but they had no numbers and no financial plan; the Sr. apts. provider explained that he'd be looking for city and state grants and loans, and if he didn't get them he wouldn't build; and Roger Harman explained his, Vincent's Duane's personal finances and their willingness to put everything they had on the line, personally, for Abbraccio. They sounded like the best bet - and a lively use for a commercial space, too. We suggested that the Sr. apts. provider could buy another building in the area and rehab it, rather than use a space with commercial zoning for yet another apartment building. The builders of Abbraccio also offered to pay market value for the land - the school did not, and I forget if the Sr. apts. builder did, but he would have been using city and state money, so he wouldn't really have been paying market value. Soon afterwards, there was a major leak problem in a building the Sr. apts. provider has at 48th Chester, and he was not very quick to make repairs and had some unhappy tenants, somewhat tarnishing his reputation as a white knight. Maybe what we need is a group of neighbors to get together and try to buy a couple of large apartment buildings with elevators, buildings which can be made to accommodate seniors - though at this time we'd be competing with the USP/ Fannie Mae/ Penn partnership, so I'm not sure it would be easy to be the top bidder. The game will commence at 7:00 P.M. Penn is currently undefeated in the Ivy League standings. If they win on Friday night against Columbia and second place Brown also wins, a Penn victory against Cornell will clinch a share of the Ivy League Championship for Penn. This will be the last home game for the Penn seniors. We could use some extra fans, as Penn's Spring Break begins on Friday, so many of the students will be away. The Palestra is the most historic gymnasium in America. If you have never been there, you should try and make the game. It is a great venue to watch a basketball game and there are few experiences that match a close game in a packed Palestra. [UC] Penn-Harvard Game
I am writing to encourage my University City neighbors to think about attending the Penn-Harvard football game at Franklin Field tomorrow (Saturday, November 16). It always amazes me that so many people live so close to Franklin Field and have never been to a game there. They are great fun. Penn has been playing Harvard and most of the other Ivy League teams for over 100 years. There is great enthusiasm on the part of the students and alumni that cheer the teams on. The Penn Band always puts on a good show. There is no alcohol sold at the stadium, which has its advantages and disadvantages, but does make it a great atmosphere for families and kids. This game in particular should be good. Penn and Harvard bring undefeated league records into the game. The last two years, the game between these rivals decided the Ivy League Championship and will again this year. Penn is currently ranked 21st in the nation in Division 1-AA. The game kicks off at 12:30 AM. General Admission tickets are $10 and $5 for kids and seniors. About the price of a movie. You can spend more if you want fancier seats. If it is raining, everyone can hide under the upper deck. I am having a few fans over to my house before the game for refreshments. Anyone who would like to stop over and have a small group to go to the game with is welcome. I will be receiving guests from 10 AM until about 11:30 AM. Penn is currently ranked 21st in the nation in Division 1-AA.The game kicks off at 12:30 AM. General Admission tickets are $10 and $5 for kids and seniors. About the price of a movie. You can spend more if you want fancier seats. If it is raining, everyone can hide under the upper deck.I am having a few fans over to my house before the game for refreshments. [UC] Veterinary School Expansion
In yesterdays Philadelphia Inquirer there was an article that was essentially talking about financial problems that our local colleges and universities were having. In that article, it was mentioned a planned $48 million expansion of Penns veterinary school that would require city approval to close part of Baltimore Avenue where it intersects with Woodland and University Avenue. I pull my head out of the sand every once in a while, but I had not heard anything about this. I was wondering whether anyone knew anything about this.

[UC] FW: FW: Friends of Clark Park and the Master Plan
Below is an email that Matt Grubel requested that I forward to the listservs. -Original Message- From: Mathew Grubel [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2001 7:22 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: FW: Friends of Clark Park and the Master Plan Dear Matthew Wolfe, As it appears that a letter you sent regarding the Clark Park Revitalization Plan has raised some questions on the community list serves, please do me the favor of posting the following for me. Sincerely, Mathew Grubel First. There have been very few changes to the plan subsequent to the petitions that you and I collected. Both your petion and mine did not include a place to date the signitures (a standard practice in both your profession and mine). This has led some to dismiss the validity of the petitions. Here are the facts. Last Meeting for Public Comment: June 21, 2001 Begin Collection of Signatures: July 6, 2001 Friends of Clark Park Board Meeting: July 17, 2001 Just over a hundred were collected by this board meeting where the proposal passed, (contingent on edits recommended by Paul Brooks). Several more pages were handed to by July 24, and two more pages by August 1 when I was asked to send them to the Recreation Commissioner. Second. People should be aware that the petitions do not call for killing the plan. They request the city to hold off until the design changes recommended are in line with actual conditions and uses. *petitions quoted fully at bottom. Third. The points of your concern are in fact contained in the plan. An illustration of the design is available on-line at the UCD web-site, but the document is not. Allow me to point to some of them. I encourage everyone to examine the documents themselves, and discuss them, and decide for themselves. Item 1. Concern that the discredited tree analysis was influential. This preliminary report made it apparent that some trees may need to be removed and that a detailed study is needed to verify where those trees are. (p.53). Some of us would like to see the Friends take a position of principle which has been paraphrased as We will fell no tree before its time. Item 2. Pathways. Illustration on page 54 shows most of the pathways in A Park to be relocated and maybe 1/3 of those in B C park. This is most certainly a major change. Concrete is recommended as the material of choice for new pathways and pathways to be resurfaced. (p.55) Item 3. Extent of new construction. The tot lot is proposed for relocation to the central portion of the park and will be greatly expanded (p.58) The farmer's market will be retained with expansions to the paved area. Brick or concrete pavers ..between the existing sidewalk and curb...add six feet and width from the existing sidewalk towark the park, (p.59). There are also recommendations to create a formal plaza at Woodland Avenue, and on Kingsessing Ave, and a new plaza in the middle of A Park that would be filled with small flowering trees, along with fencing and shrubbery. *Main petition: We the undersigned believe that there are serious flaws in the proposed Master Plan for Clark Park. We urge tge City of Philadelphia Recreaction Department to refrain from accepting the plan without additional study and substantial changes from the present draft. The other petition is a slight variation on the same theme, and was not as popular: We the undersigned urge the City of Phildelphia to refrain from adopting the proposed Clark Park Revitalization Plan until (a) it reflects the additional study of actual conditions and uses, (b) the community is allowed to see and understand the impact of the proposed changes. [UC] RE: Illegal drugs, truly filthy sex and FAIR PLAY ... uh ... er ... ah ... I support the plan
Dear Andy: I suspect that I am not going to sway you, but why not try? You say: As far as the plan. I support it because I want some things fixed which have been broken for quite awhile, such as the lights, and to see new trees planted. These are maintenance issues, not planning issues. They are not addressed in the plan and there is nothing incompatible with being against the plan and wanting those matters addressed. I do too. You say: Those recommendations that I had doubts about have been removed or separated off as issues on which we, the community, need to come to consensus on before they're implemented. I do not know exactly which recommendations you are referring to here, but there are many who are still strongly against many components of the plan that have not been removed. There are no issues, however, which have been separated out. They are either in the plan or have been removed. Moving the Dickens Statue is out. A new building for bathrooms is in. You say: I also support it because I've attended Friends of Clark Park meetings and although we would have a lot of discussion we weren't able to do some of the things we wanted to do. There were plenty of good ideas presented but we were a relatively small group and didn't have a lot of money and a park is surprisingly expensive to maintain and keep operating. Again, these sort of concerns appear to be related to maintenance and are not addressed in the plan. You say: One other point about the plan. I believe that every issue that was raised during the planning process was recommended by some member of the community so although we may not agree with all these ideas, they're all from neighbors. True enough, although I have always felt that the planners drove the process and in the course of the meetings took every suggestion, no matter how bad, and put it in because doing a plan that just renewed our present facilities was not innovative to win them any awards at the annual landscape planner's convention. Although the ideas may be from neighbors, so is the opposition. You say: I disagree that we should delay implementation of the plan. This process has already taken the best part of a year and I'm getting older all the time. Always remember you will never be as old as me. There is no rush here to change things. There is no deadline. Again, maintenance issues must be taken care of and that is being done. To simply push this plan ahead simply because it has taken a year is not in the neighborhood's best interests. Pushing forward a plan with significant community opposition simply causes community leaders to spend time and energy continuing to fight about the plan when that time and energy could be put towards more beneficial enterprises. We should get it right even if it takes longer. In the grand scheme of things it is unlikely to make a real difference as funding will be much slower to come by unless there is a consensus in favor of the plan. I support the plan Fellow Clark Park Enthusiasts, As a member of the Friends of Clark Park for the last few years, basically we seem to do a lot of those things that Parks and Recreation should do but don't. We pick up the leaves, do plantings, fix stuff like the signs going into the park, and generally try to pick up where Parks and Recreation leave off. These are many things that I personally feel that Parks and Recreation should do but they don't seem to have the money so I'm not sure how else to handle this. Over the last two years, UCD has also helped out by fund raising (the Party in the Park and other work) which now provides funding for some of the trash pick up, mowing, and other maintenance that again, should be done by Parks and Recreation. By the way, I believe that Michael Africa, who does work in the park, is paid by either the Friends of Clark Park or via UCD for his work. He's been great and I hope he's willing to continue at the park. As to John's general question about responsibility, it's the same thing I asked when we moved here in 1997. Who's taking care of the park. As a long time bureaucrat, I was always sure that someone was shirking their responsibility but I've now come to believe that, at least in part, Parks and Recreation is trying their best and that it's our responsibility, as users of the park, to make sure the park is taken care of. If anyone has leverage with the City or with Parks and Recreation I'm sure all of us would appreciate any additional efforts to keep Clark Park maintained and the facilities in good repair. As far as the plan. I support it because I want some things fixed which have been broken for quite
