Indeed 4 Ohm car speakers were developed to work with a relative low
voltage swing of a 12 volt rail.
5 Volt digital amps have a maximum theoretical swing of 10 volts, so are
geared towards these 4 ohm speakers.

I am quite pleased with these small amps, easy efficient and enough for
lots of deployments.
But it might not be enough sound while driving you camper.
It helps to power them at the max voltage of 5,5 Volts with decent wires
and capacitor.

You're absolutely right. The radio has to be quite loud when driving at
speed, thanks to a combination of road, engine and wind noise. For 'up
front' use I'm planning to use a SqueezeAMP behind the dashboard radio,
feeding the radio's AUX IN. My dilemma was whether to try to run two
pairs of speakers from the dashboard radio, but I'm pretty much settled
on just using this Pirate Audio board to supply the 'living area'
speakers.

Some sort of additional screen, that's big enough for proper touch
control of Jivelite, will be mounted somewhere. So I'm looking at the
alternatives - maybe a nice bevel that can be recessed into the
furniture board or is low-profile enough that it can be surface mounted.

2020-02-02 Thread soundcheck

The problem is, you can't disable the HW mixer - the alsa-mixer - if
such a mixer is offered by the driver/firmware.

Meaning, before starting squeezelite you'd need to initialize the HW
mixer of your DAC.

I havn't tested if LMS also sets the HW-mixer through squeezelite
external Volume control to 100% if enabled.

I kind of doubt it.

Because of above and to avoid ambiguous/random situations I configured
all my systemd service files to
run a alsa-mixer-init.sh script (that knows all settings for all my
DACs) before starting squeezelite.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite on a Pirate Audio 240x240 screen

2020-02-02 Thread chill

I've almost finished the changes to the 240x240 skin and the rest of
Jivelite to make the brightness controls work. One outstanding task is
the multilingual translations of various on-screen messages. One of the
really nice things about Jive/Lua is that the language support is built
in - we just need to supply a file of translations. I'm no linguist, so
I'm hoping I can use the skills of the good people on this forum to
'crowd source' some translations.

First up is a simple one - the name of the skin. The text against the
commented-out lines (preceded with #) is what is used for the QVGA
'landscape' skin, but it needs to be updated to match the new EN
version.

Code:

QVGA240SQUARE_SKIN
  # SLT: QVGA refers to the "quarter VGA" resolution of the display
  # CS QVGA skin krajiny
  # DA QVGA-tema, liggende
  # DE QVGA-Querformat-Skin
  # EN QVGA Landscape Skin
EN QVGA 240x240 Square Skin
  # ES Máscara horizontal QVGA
  # FI QVGA-vaakaolemus
  # FR Habillage paysage QVGA
  # IT Skin QVGA orizzontale
  # NL QVGA Landscape-skin
  # NO QVGA liggende skall
  # PL Karnacja pozioma QVGA
  # RU Обложка: QVGA,
альбомная
ориентация
  # SV QVGA-skal i liggande format

The other translations I'd appreciate some help with relate to
'minimised' versions of what is shown on the brightness screens. These
two photos show how little space there is for this text, so I've had to
generate new versions that use the fewest possible words.

[image:
http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/Jivelite/240x240/Brightness%20On%20text_640.jpg]

[image:
http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/Jivelite/240x240/Brightness%20Off%20text_640.jpg]

These screens can't be scrolled up and down, because the direction keys
are used to adjust the brightness level, so the text MUST fit. In
minimising what was there previously, I was not able to convey
-precisely- the same message as the original, non-space-constrained,
versions (which I've left in for reference below), but in my opinion the
meaning is still clear. So that's the objective with the translations
in other languages. The meaning must be similar, but top priority is
that the length of the text should be no longer than the EN equivalent.
There's space for a few extra characters here and there, depending how
the lines break, but it should not require any additional lines. Even
the title at the top of the page needs to be short - when it said
'Backlight Brightness:' it would not quite display correctly if the
value was 100.

Thanks in advance.

Just selecting the hw: prefixed device you get a direct access to the
hardware.

Well not sure to understand but my goal isn't really disable it (unless
it needed to reach my goal).
My goal is that i want the pi to decode and transfert music information
to my DAC with no resample, no remix, no boost, no replaygain just
send "like it" and lC do the job.
Not sure if i'm clear :)

Nope.

The LMS control only operate on server side. You could then have a
volume control in Squeezelite (using, if I well remember -V option) AND
in the OS at hardware and software level.

You should take care of all the option you have.

In my installation squeezelite is compiled without the support for
external volume control, and the mixer for the device does not have ANY
control, that way I'm 100% sure is always 100%.
Server side you have the control I mentioned.

YOu must take care of both, and I could not understand how moode could
do that, being only a client with squeezelite installed.

When i mentioned moode is with mpd server and not squeezelite.
In mpd its really simple just edit the mpd.cfg and in the line called
MIXER= put software, hardware or disable that's it.

Ok if i understand you there is Os mixer, Server mixer option
(squeezelite) and client control (LMS),

I guess that i need is OS to 100%, server is bypassing by OS, and LMS is
set up to 100%, right ?

RIght, but LMS is SERVER and SQUEEZELITE is CLIENT (forget MPD names and
concept, ...here the client is the device attached to the DAC, receiving
data from the server, the server is where LMS runs and it send data to
clients, controllers just controls players via the server.

if availlable:

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite on a Pirate Audio 240x240 screen

2020-02-02 Thread chill

Thanks M-H

You are correct - the new text strings should not have any reference to
landscape or portrait. My EN 'exemplars' (without the preceding #) are
the strings that need to be translated - I only left the old strings in
there for information, but since they are preceded by the # symbol they
are ignored.

If you go to the first post in this thread, there is a link to the
current 'best' instructions for installing the skin. Currently the pCP
repo contains the version that works with the 'normal' brightness, but
not the latest 'brightness when off' edits. I don't want to make that
available separately, partly because it will confuse the issue, and
partly because it makes changes to the main Jivelite code, JiveMain.lua.
That's not a step to take lightly! Mistakes in that code will prevent
Jivelite from loading at all. So it's with Ralphy for his approval, and
will be included in the pCP repo when all concerned are happy with it.

If you want to check your translations, copy the 'piCorePlayer' and
'QVGA240squareSkin' folders from /opt/jivelite/share/jive/applets to
/home/tc/.jivelite/userpath/applets, then edit the 'strings.txt' files
in the latter path. Select the 'Quit' option from the main Jivelite
menu to restart Jivelite with your changes.

But when i try to do :

amixer sset C2 100% it gives :

Code:

amixer: Unable to find simple control 'C2',0

Same results with Master, Digital, PCM, Cambridge AudioDAC100 USB 2...

What would you suggest to do to check if alsa is 100% or to setup it ?

Thanks.

Your DAC simply doesn't have HW VC as your printout shows.

alsamixer is useless at that point.
that's why all the squeezelite related HW VC settings are also useless.

Only SW control is left. If locked on LMS it'll be bitperfect.

That's proven. Otherwise DSD wouldn't work either.

@Marcoc.

There's a lot VC also going on on the server. E.g. The whole volume
curve generation and mapping is done on the server.
It's not that simple.

-U should do the trick.

I'm not an expert on PI, but, to check IF the card has a mixer volume
control, with alsa yoicould use alsamixer or squeezelite -L.

Not sure why you wrote this, I'm aware volume control is mainly at
server side, but if you fix volume at 100% and avoid replay gain,
crossfade and others you get bit perfect output to Squeezelite., then
avoiding -V you get bit perfect output to ALSA, using -U you then get
bit perfect to the sound card.

There is more than this? Please explain in case.

I suggest you make the output setting

hw:CARD=C2,DEV=0

remove the other configurations from

Unmute ALSA contol and the other box

Save and reboot

Return to the page and go the the

Unmute ALSA contol box, expand the red word more and you should see
your options there.

For myself I would just use hw:CARD=C2,DEV=0 in the Output Setting

and 100% in the LMS settings, leave the other boxes at default blank and
forget about it.

The brightness controls are implemented within the piCorePlayer applet.
For those controls the applet checks whether the official 7" display is
installed, and gives an error message if not. My changes introduced an
'else' condition, which checks whether the file 'lcd-brightness.sh'
exists in /home/tc/. If it doesn't you still get the same error
message, but if it does then it branches to use a different set of
string variables; all the ones ending in _GENERIC are my new strings.

So no, you can change those _GENERIC strings without affecting what a
user with the official 7" display will see.

Of course, to test it you need to install the skin, the piCorePlayer
applet, and create a file called /home/tc/lcd-brightness.sh . That file
can be empty, and your brightness control will just not work, but it
must be there in order for the brightness controls to display.

Michael, I've pushed the current changes from Chris to our picoreplayer
gitlab repo develop branch.
There's a patch file tcz/jivelite/pcp-JiveMain-GenericBrightness.patch
for the JiveMain.lua changes and the piCorePlayer applet folder has what
Chris sent me yesterday.
I need to look at why the changes are required to JiveMain, as I didn't
think changes were required for the rpi 7" screen.
I'm planning to apply the required change to JiveMain.lua when the
pcp-jivelite extension is created rather than making the change to the
main github jivelite repository.

Sorry, I was wrong.

We do already have a patch file pcp-JiveMain-lua.patch for the 7" rpi
screen to support the initial brightness that is only applied for the
pcp jivelite extension build. So I'll do the same for the generic
support as well.

You should try to get started using github. Once you got the basics it's
so much easier to handle this kind of collaboration. And it's not really
black magic.

The brightness change is on the pCP repository, which is hosted on Gitlab:

https://gitlab.com/piCorePlayer/pCP/commit/3c36e770e3b0b0c668984aaed6b74fa856dd2841#330811c1a2db0faf1918dde1b5d7e599152f1586

Gitlab is slightly different from Github, but the basic git commands
needed to deal with this are exactly the same.

There are many DACs out there offering numerous
parameters via Alsamixer.

You never know what default settings a driver offers.
I ran numerous times into messed up alsamixer settings.

Usually changes happen accidentally without being noticed.

That's when I introduced my alsamixer-init script. Since then
everything runs smooth.

I do think it's well worth to have look at the subject.

I have a bug or problem with 4, 5, 6. using a rasberry pi zero W with a
Google voicehat version 2.

With piCorePlayer there is no sound output at the headphone jack or the
speaker. alsamixer reports no controls for the voicehat.

With Raspbian Lite + Squezelite I get output from the headphone jack and
the speaker. alsamixer reports many google voicehat options.

I have found mention of people getting the voicehat to work but not any
mention of which version of the hat, version 1 or version 2.

has any one had a problem with version2 and found a way to fix it?

Thanks for any ideas
Greg Frye

2020-02-02 Thread paul-

Ask for help in the appropriate thread for the version of pCP. I don’t
recall when google voice hat support was added. If you can select it
in the drop down on the squeezelite page, then. It should be supported.
We use the same drivers as Raspbian.

If it’s not working start by posting some debug info. Start by posting
what is listed when you Expand the more> by the output setting for
squeezelite.

There are two very small error in the German strings:

Code:

um die Helligkeit au einen Prozentwert des Maximums festzulegen

(it can be found two times)
this should be:

Code:

um die Helligkeit auf einen Prozentwert des Maximums festzulegen

So there is only a "f" missing. :-)

Thanks Carsten - I'm collecting all the updates in my own local copy of

Thanks Carsten & Chill - I already pushed the fix for the German string.

I always wondered why people didn't run spellcheckers on their texts to
find such simple typos. They must be as lazy as I am...

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer6.0.0 - PI4 support

2020-02-02 Thread carsten_h

I still have problems with starting up piCorePlayer. I have attached a
USB 3 enclosure for a M.2 SSD on a Pi 4. This is partitioned with MBR
and inside is an ExFAT filesystem (hfs+ is also not working).
At startup piCorePlayer is waiting at USB mount forever. If I start
without the SSD piCorePlayer is comming up, but LMS is not running (that
is OK).
When I attach the SSD, it will be mounted (shown on the piCorePlayer
webpage for LMS), but if I make a "ls -al /mnt/Musikbox" the shell shows
nothing and is not comming back to the prompt.

Before it was running for a few days without a problem, but yesterday I
did a shutdown of the Pi and attached the SSD to my Mac to sync the
music with my iTunes library. I think 30 files were newly copied to the
SSD. Then I attached the SSD to the Pi and started it up again.

I tried to use a GPT partitioned SSD also with hfs+ or ExFAT, but that
didn't change anything.

I now really have no clue what can be the problem!
