Again, thanks for helping out.

I am now using the image as I referrd to above - seems to be a lot more
complete. perl -v still shows same info.

Set up and ran the CPAN buildme script. This ran for quite some time
then ended with:

Code:

  UNAME_RELEASE = 3.14.72-odroidc2
  UNAME_SYSTEM  = Linux

configure: error: cannot guess build type; you must specify one
  ./runConfigureICU: ./configure failed
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

I am getting close to giving up unless you can see a simple fix?

Cheers

2016-07-10 Thread ChrisMmm

I have probaly confused myself with multiple builds and package
installs, maybe I assumed 5.22 because of this thread and I did start
using Ubuntu 16.04 but then switched to Jessie.

perl -v givse me "This is perl 5, version 20, subversion 2 (v5.20.2)
built for aarch64-linux-gnu-thread-multi"

I had used what was described as a minimal Debian for the C2, I will
download the "Jessie server" from here http://www.armbian.com/odroid-c2/
now and see how that goes.

OK, after installing a few extra required packages got the build scrip

Not looking good. The directory exists as does file "perl.h" but not
with the ":676:23:" part. Possible script error?

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: Squeezelite - a small headless squeezeplay emulator for linux (alsa only)

I am playing with an Odroid C2

using it with Debian Jessie and a ES9023 DAC via the C2s I2S interface.

I installed Squeezelite using apt-get install and all works fine.
However this provides version 1.6.4 so I tried to update to latest
version. I un-installed 1.6.4 and did wget
http://squeezelite.googlecode.com/files/squeezelite-armv6hf (my usual
method of installing Squeezelite). However it does not run and I get a
message back "no such file or directory". having installed squeezelite
via this method many, many times all I can think is that The C2 and
version of Debian is 64bit and causing an issue - any ideas if that
would be the case or what my problem may be?

[SlimDevices: Unix] LMS 7.9 on Odroid C2/Debian get "Logitech Media Server died. Restarting."

2016-07-07 Thread ChrisMmm

Hi,

Trying to get LMS running on my ODROID C2 running Debian Jessie. I
installed using script here
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Debian_Package#installing_7.9.0
Install seemed to go fine hovever looking at the server.log I see the
message "Logitech Media Server died. Restarting." appearing every 5
seconds.

Also tried to install 7.8.1 and got same.

As the Odroid C2 is 64 bit wondered if that was part of the problem so
installed using same script on my 64bit Mint/Ubuntu (Debian based)
machine - this time it worked fine.

Is there anywhere I can get more detail as to why LMS dies? Any
suggestions/help greatly appreciated.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: Squeezelite - a small headless squeezeplay emulator for linux (alsa only)

2014-12-19 Thread ChrisMmm

I have been playing with SOX upsampling via Squeezelite - all going well
except...

My current project has a Beaglebone Black feeding a miniSHARC DSP via
I2S using the Botic drivers developed by miero. After some
experimentation I have this working. As most of my files are CD images
44.1k the BBB is upsampling to 48k internally as it has only a single
clock. To avoid the BBB doing the upsampling I am trying upsampling via
SOX (assuming it to be superior to the BBB native upsampling) using the
-u startup parameter and -r to set max sample rate. To test this is
working I tried with -r 96000 and displayed via

cat /proc/asound/BOTICAudio/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params

However this is showing a rate of 48000 rather than the expected 96000.

access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S32_LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 48000 (48000/1)
period_size: 1024
buffer_size: 16384

So I really do not know if SOX is upsampling from 44.1k or if its the
BBB. If SOX is upsampling then why only to 48k?

The startup I am using looks like this:

squeezelite -o hw:CARD=BOTICAudio -n Botic96 -a 16384:1024:: -u mIX -r
96000 -z

Even tho it only shows a 48k stream it does seem to be getting thru to
the miniSHARC. The miniSHARC can run at 48k or 96k, I have it running
the 96k SW. I have also tested running from the BBB directly to a ES9023
DAC via I2S/Botic drivers and I get the same 48k. All I can think is
some restriction/effect of the Botic driver or maybe the -a startup
param which I had to have for these drivers (earlier conversation with
Adrian).

As a control test I tried all this on a RaspberryPi running I2S directly
to a ES9023 DAC, with the -r set to 192000 it displays as having a 192k
data stream.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted!

Also can you tell me if there is any detrimental effect as a result of
upsampling between the 2 frequency families (i.e. 44.1k to multiple of
48k - 192k in this case) as opposed to staying in the same frequency
family? Increased jitter or suchlike?

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: Squeezelite - a small headless squeezeplay emulator for linux (alsa only)

2014-12-04 Thread ChrisMmm

Hi, I connecting a Beaglenone Black via I2S using an code supplier by
miero. I am connecting to a miniSHARC which runs at 48 or 96k (user
selectable) and any input not running at those frequencies gets
converted via a SW ASRC implemented in the main DSP module. So my aim is
to get the I2S signal at 48/96K and avoid the ASRC in the DSP which I
assume is greatly inferior to sox running form Squeezelite on the BBB.

From a post by John Swenson a while back I read The current
implementation in Squeezelite does upsampling to the highest interger
rate your DAC cupports. Thus if your DAC's maximum rate is 192, it will
upsample to 44.1 to 176.4. If your DAC does not support 176.4, you can
use the -r option (or max sample rate in the gui) to set the max rate to
96, then squeezlite will upsample to 88.2. Even upsampling to 88.2 will
usually make a significant improvement. There has been talk about giving
the upsampling more flexibility so you could choose 192 in this case.

Is this still the case? I play almost exclusively 44.1k files and would
like to upsample to 48 or 96K - is this doable? If the restriction

As far as I know it was, just followed the instructions on post #1. I
did all 3 install methods and the last one (building Arch system first)
worked in terms of completing the install and getting an IP address. The
other 2 methods got an IP address initially, then after the first boot
OK but nothing for subsequent boots. Wondering if its something with my
router but I checked everything including removing a reserved IP for the
WB, nothing helped.

Still missing the WiFi tab but I assume this is a different issue.

Well I tried an install of ARCH followe by the SoA install instructions
- i.e. the original install method. That worked and I can boot the WB
and it comes up with an IP address.

So success there. BUT the whole reason I did this was to get the
wireless network tab back which had disappeared some while back. However
it still isn't showing. I recall some issues here a while back.

Is there a fix for this?

Using Firefox instead of Chrome got log of activity immediately for the

So Jivelite is not present by the look of this. However it remains
ticked and version number in the Update panel. If I try to tick Jivelite
to install it nothing happens.

Again, not a real issue for me, just reporting.

devices running the appropriate level Arch. Right now the Post #1

It may be I am the only non-Wand user here so I will understand if that

Small thing - the player would not come active at first, played around

it started!

Like the new logo by the way. SoA on BBB has a ring to it! Maybe it

Installed as per post #1 in the thread and all running fine on my
Wandboard Dual. Haven't actually attached to my stereo but its available
through LMS and seems to be working fine.

Install isn't too bad tho obviously not as simple as the CSOS type .img
file. Having loaded Archlinux on my BBB in the past I have become
familiar with that type of install. The Squeeze part is straight forward
enough.

Only thing not working at the moment is Wifi. I followed the
instructions but wlan0 never became visible. Anybody else got that
going?

I know this is an early release but looking great so far, I like the
fact that I can install Arch on the 3 platforms I use for Squeezelite
players (Pi, BBB, Wand) and eventually may install on them all
(currently Debian on BBB and Picoreplayer on Pi). One suggestion is
having an option to autostart Squeezelite after bootup. That and having
Wifi covered which I assume will get added sometime.

Anyhow thanks Triode, I was disappointed to hear CSOS was having legal
issues but this may actually suit me better I think.

Yes! All good, working fine in Wifi now.

Squeezelite seems to require a restart after a reboot - is that to be
expected?

Fantastic job Triode, looks and works great. The install script takes a
lot of the potential install errors out of play. I will put this into my
system and use it now.

So, port to BBB? :) Kinda kidding, I guess its the install script that
would need tweaking for other devices that can run Arch. Sometime maybe?

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite

2014-04-17 Thread ChrisMmm

Hi Steen, thanks for the response.

I understand your concerns and realise the key issue is the ability to
run microcore on the BBB.

I have been experimenting with a few different players in the last 6
months. Right now I have a Wandboard running CSOS, a RPI running
Picoreplayer with ES9023 I2S attached and a Beaglebone black also with
I2S attached ES9023 running the Botic drivers that JackofAll mentions
under Debian/Squeezelite. My preference in terms of the software is
Picoreplayer because of its simplicity, robustness and speed to boot.

My preference for Picoreplayer over CSOS is based on my usage which is
simply for a basic Squeezelite player whereas CSOS has greater
functionality. So maybe a cutdown, player only version of CSOS is the
answer if Picoreplayer remains exclusively RPi.

In terms of DACs working with the BBB I have trier bother USB and I2S
attached ES9023 but I know others using the Botic drivers have user
ES9018 DACS. As I understand it the intention is that the drivers will
be as generic as possible and cover most DACS that require a I2S input
tho I understand there are flavours of I2S!

I will look into trying microcore on my BBB in the next few days and
report the results.

Also thanks for the update to get IQaudIO support.

Awesome, thanks Steen.

Now an even bigger request - port to the Beaglebone Black!

There are some very interesting developments with the BBB here
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/twisted-pear/250583-building-open-embedded-audio-applicance.html
I am hoping this will lead to a far better quality I2S interface from
the BBB than any other such device (including Rpi) can achieve. Assuming
this all works out, and I see no reason why not, this will be the way of
the future for me in terms of digital audio.

I still find that Picoreplayer is my preferred SW and would love to have
it available on the BBB.

Cheers,

Hi Steen,

A friend just purchased one of these http://iqaudio.com/?page_id=28 and
I am setting it up for him. I was hoping to use it with Picoreplayer as
its my preferred player. The Pi-DAC uses a PCM5122 as opposed to the
5102 in the HifiBerry DAC.

I had assumed the existing drivers for an I2S attached DAC would work
but does not seem to. Any chance you could look at adding the
appropriate drivers so this DAC can be used with Picoreplayer? There is
a link to their github/iqaudio page in the link above. I am guessing
there must be much common code with the HifiBerry drivers.

Much apprciated,
Chris

Hi,

I am trying to get Squeezelite running on the BBB with newly developed
drivers (see
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/twisted-pear/250583-building-open-embedded-audio-applicance-35.html#post3858770),
running on Debian 3.8.13-bone40 . However I get the following when I
start squeezelite:

Code:

root@arm:~# squeezelite -o hw:CARD=Botic
[19:40:11.979379] alsa_open:303 unable to get period size: Invalid argument

Squeezelite does seem to run tho and shows under LMS but its behaving
strangely (when you pause goes back to start of track and restarts
playing the track). No sound. Testing the same drivers with
speaker_test does give sound.

I also got this message when I was testing with the I2S drivers that
come with that version of the kernel.

Any suggestions as to cause greatly appreciated.

2014-02-01 Thread ChrisMmm

Likewise a problem with settings not sticking.

Changing the Squeezelite settings to I2S - the Audio= setting says it
changes to I2S, at this point restarting Squeezelite gives me audio via
I2s. However it goes back to the default of Analog if you boot. Bit
confusing as Audio= is not a documented Squeezelite parm even tho it
stops I2S working if not set.

Otherwise liked the GUI - well done Steen.

As an aside, just did a quick side by side comparison of the R-Pi with
I2S feeding a ES9023 and my standard setup which is Beaglebone Black
with XMOS USB interface feeding a ES9023 board (different board but same
circuit/chip). I could not tell any difference so all good.

2014-01-31 Thread ChrisMmm

Thanks I will try that.

I am assuming the the module loaded for the HifiBerry DAC are not really
specific to that DAC board or even to the PCM5102A chip on it. I am
guessing the modules (drivers?) are actually generic for use with any
DAC chip connected via I2S using the same data format. That means the
PCM5210A, ES9023 type chips (which I think will be the most common of
DAC chips on the market) using that same I2S format are all covered by
this module. Am I correct in that assumption?

Now I have this working I am thinking of building a single box housing
RasprberryPi, DAC board and power supply. I would like to understand
which DACs would be good candidates for this, i.e. should work with the
existing modules.

OK, its not as simple as I thought!

I came across this https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/pull/461/files
which obviously covers the HifiBerry modules etc.. I am guessing the
modules/drivers work with the ES9023 because the I2S format is the
same.

Can anybody confirm this? I would greatly appreciate a brief description
on how this all works. For example, would you need a separate module for
every board using a PCM5102A DAC or would a generic module per DAC (or
DAC type) be adequate?

In the meantime I will hook up the Pi/ES9023 to my main system and see
how it sounds (so far just a brief test with low level gear).

Hi Steen,

Just to note I just hooked up one of these
http://hifimediy.com/index.php?route=product/productpath=62product_id=127
directly to the RasPi Header5 via I2S and using the latest version of
Picoreplayer. Working perfectly first time. Thanks for the upgrade
making this possible.

I am wondering, tho, why the aplay -l command shows this:

ard 0: ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA], device 0: bcm2835 ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA]
Subdevices: 8/8
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Subdevice #1: subdevice #1

Subdevice #4: subdevice #4
Subdevice #5: subdevice #5
Subdevice #6: subdevice #6

card 1: sndrpihifiberry [snd_rpi_hifiberry_dac], device 0: HifiBerry DAC
HiFi pcm5102a-hifi-0 []
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Clearly I do not have a HifiBerry Dac so wondering if you could give
some understanding why I see this? Presumably the name is hard coded
somewhere? Is it actually looking to see what is attached or just
recognising there is an device connected via I2S?

Anyhow thanks again for your work on Picoreplayer, I continue to use and
enjoy it. Any further thoughts to porting to BeagleBone Black?

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks Triode.

The squeezelite that is running is executed out of a script running as a
daemon at bootup time. It is using the same binary file that I try to
run with the -? in the example I showed (I wasn't trying to start
another squeezelite, I just wanted to list the output devices, using -?

As I said I have now created a copy of the original binary, as I recall
this is all I did

Code:

cd /usr/bin
  cp squeezelite-armv6hf squeezelite

I checked the authorities on both original and copy, they were the same.
Now I can do squeezelite -? (or -l) at the same time the squeezelite
started via the script is running. So, it appears to me, simply having
the binary named squeezelite rather than squeezelite-armv6hf means
this now works. Something around how the options are parsed possibly. I
don't imagine its a squeezelite problem as such but I would like to
understand why this happens so I don't have to go asking stoopid
questions!

2013-11-01 Thread ChrisMmm

Hi,

I am running Squeezelite 1.3 on a Beagleboard Black under Archlinux. I
have created a script that runs at bootup - very happy with the result,
no glitches, runs unattended for days.

However, there is a strange issue I would like to understand and
resolve. When the script is running Squeezelite and I try to execute a
Squeezelite command, even just a -? I get the following

Code:

[root@alarm ~]# cd /usr/bin
  [root@alarm bin]# ./squeezelite-armv6hf –?
[14:06:40.355093] test_open:184 playback open error: Device or resource busy
[14:06:40.358222] output_init:1540 unable to open output device
  [root@alarm bin]#

If I stop the script by issuing a stop command and try the same
Squeezelite command again, I get no response on the terminal (cursor
just drops to next line) but what happens is Squeezelite starts running
again. In addition if I kill the terminal/ssh session Squeezelite keeps
running. Now I know on my RaspberryPi/Picoreplayer and Wandboard/CSOS
you can run Squeezelite query commands while Sqeeezelite is running.

I am not greatly experienced with Linux under the covers and less so
with Archlinux, I am guessing this has to be something to do with how I
have set up the script tho I think I may have had the issue even before
I set up the script. Its not a biggy as it all works fine otherwise but
this is annoying me that I can't resolve it so any suggestions as to
where to look greatly appreciated.

For a few $s more than the cost of a Pi the BBB looks very promising -
extra CPU power and better USB implementation. I have just ordered one

Picoreplayer/Squeezelite given how well this works on the Pi.

understand what difference this would make from using sysdefault and I
have seen others use front but it seems to make sense in terms of how

If anybody has an understanding of the effect of using the different

I did a quick test using Wifi and with my CM6631 USB SPDIF box and its
working. This was why I went to picoreplayer because the kernel level
has support for that chip.

Amazed at how small the .img is, at the same time does al I want.
Thanks!

Anyhow I posted on the Squeezeplug thread and was directed to try
piCorePlayer. That has a kernel at 3.9, just set it up and tested and
its working with the CM6631 so all good for the Raspberry Pi now! Its an
amazingly small image, only set up to run Squeezelite but thats all I
need.

On the SUBBU DAC, yes, lot of really good commentary on its performance.
A friend and I are on the GB list for the new SPDIF versions and waiting
for them to ship tho I really want a USB version now I have moved to
Wandboard and Raspberry Pi for my players. To date I have seen nothing
on development of the USB version, no idea what chip they may use.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite

2013-09-05 Thread ChrisMmm

Steen,

I am very impressed with piCorePlayer and Squeezelite so far.

I am wondering about its relative performance when compares with other
Linux base players using Squeezelite. For example the Community Squeeze
Wandboard based system using Fedora. In your opinion is there any reason
why one should perform better than the other? There is an assumption, I
guess, that the hardware is not a limiting factor. I am thinking more
around the Linux distribution and implementation.

Would appreciate your thoughts. By the way I have both Raspberry Pi and
Wandboard but the minimalist nature of piCorePlayer appeals.

Cheers

I've modified this this to apply to our 3.0.35 kernel source and built a
new kernel. If you want to give it a go with your CM6631 via the WB and
report back. (Other patches might be required as well, so if it still
doesn't work, I'll look into it more thoroughly.)

OK, performed the update and ...it works straight off! Fantastic, now
have CSOS/Wandboard and Raspberry Pi working with the CM6631.

Many thanks for this Clive.

Thanks, that brought up the volume to my reference CD player level. But
how do you make it stick? Each time I re-boot it goes back to -20db
which seems to be the default level. Both the Wandboard and Raspberry Pi
are doing the same now so I am confused as to why the RPi was -0db (or
so I thought) when I listened to the TE7022 USB DAC first time.

Also this lower, -20db, setting does not happen on my PCM2707 DAC - it
seems totally unaffected by the alsamixer level. Any reason why that is
the case?

Sorry with all the questions, I am learning here and also somewhat
confused!

OK, thanks for that, must admit I didn't do a proper shutdown, I will do

Its not that the PCM2707 is defaulting to max - alsamixer actually shows
-20db but whatever I change the mixer level to seems to make no

Anyhow quite happy its doing that.

OK, one more question. CM6631 USB chips - are they supported under
squeezelite? I have one but can't get it working but my investigations
indicate it is not supported.

One of these, USB to SPDIF, not much detail I'm afraid, thats what you

XMOS is the smart choice, from a Linux driver point of view. There is a
99.9% chance that anything using an XMOS USB-I2S chipset just plugs in,
 no nonsense, and works!

EDIT: I have been reliably informed that fixes/workarounds for CMedia
CM6631 (and a VIA chipset) started going into Linux kernel from 3.9,
(about 6 months ago in time terms), and that a Schiit DAC which uses the
CM6631 is working fine with a 3.10 kernel. Now at the moment the
Wandboard kernel is somewhat older (3.0.35), but when we move to 3.11/12
that CMedia interface should just work. Do you know what kernel, (uname
-r), is the current default on your Pi? Is that new enough to work
reliably with the CM6631, I wonder.

I get 3.2.27+ from that line command so likely not to work I guess
unless Squeezeplug is updated. Looked at my Ubuntu PC 3.8.0-30-generic
so maybe 13.10 will have the support.

I will keep the CM6631 (was thinking I will sell it) in the hope that it
may work in the future.

My longer term aim is a high quality USB DAC with the Wandboard in my
larger system using XMOS/ES9023. Possubly the SUBBU DAC if it gets
developed with USB rather than the current SPDIF version.

Again, many thanks for the help and info.

Thanks Triode.

After a bit of experimenting got the TE7022 going with the command:

squeezelite -n SqueezeliteRPi -o sysdefault:CARD=DAC

I did try -r 48000 but that was unnecessary in the end.

Bit of digging and it looks like setup had generated -o CARD=DAC in
the options (without sysdefault), that did not seem to work.

I guess I update etc/default/squeezelite options to the line I entered

Strangely when I use the same USB DAC with my Wandboard and Squeezelite
the output is quite a bit lower than with the Raspberry Pi. Any thoughts
as to why that would be? ALSA settings?

Hi,

I am running Squeezeplug and Squeezelite player on a Raspberry Pi. All
runs very well using a PCM2707 based USB DAC. Using a Hifimediy Sabre
TE7022 basd DAC I cannot get it to work. When I install Squeezelite it
clearly recognises a Sabre DAC is attached, I select the Sabre DAC from
the list. But having done so and completed the install it does not
appear in the LMS player list. Doing same with the PCM2707 DAC all works
fine.

First question - this should work - right?

Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Community Squeeze OS F19 Release 1

2013-08-26 Thread ChrisMmm

Reposting here from Squeezebox Replacement thread as per suggestion of
JackOfAll.

I have loaded CSOS-Wandboard-Dual-F19-R1-20130811-1.img onto a Wandboard
Dual. Initially had problems getting it to operate on wireless but
succeeded and had it running fine for a couple of days. Then it dropped
off LAN so I restarted it (power off/on) but it wouldn't come active
(not visible on LAN either wireless or wired). So I copied the .img back
onto the micro SD card. It came up OK initially on wired LAN so set up
wireless as per instructions and restarted. Wouldn't come up, same
problem. Re imaged and same problem again. Also tried the Wandboard
Ubuntu .img and had similar problems. Only .img that seems to survive
restarts and work on wireless is Yocto.

My thoughts are along the lines that the files are being corrupted on
the SD card during power down/up. Any suggestions or people with similar
issues? Any feedback appreciated.

BTW, have Squeezelite on as Raspberry Pi and that works really well, in
fact unable to tell the difference between my heavily modified CD player
(my reference source) and the RPi/homemade USB DAC with FLAC files. If I
can't get the Wandboard going I will go get me another RPi!

Thanks.

Update, have re-imaged SD card and re-tested. Jivelite comes up, web
interface accessible and Wandboard recognised by LMS, all via wired LAN.
I then simply issued halt via web interface, once web interface and
Jivelite had gone (plus waited another minute) powered off Wandboared
then powered up again. Nothing, no Jivelite, no recognition by LMS. So
seems just halting and restarting causing my problem. Not at all sure
that its is the CSOS image causing this - as above the Yucto image does
work tho its a very small image. Any help or pointers greatly accepted.

Cheers
