Again, thanks for helping out. I am now using the image as I referrd to above - seems to be a lot more complete. perl -v still shows same info. Set up and ran the CPAN buildme script. I have probaly confused myself with multiple builds and package installs, maybe I assumed 5.22 because of this thread and I did start using Ubuntu 16.04 but then switched to Jessie. perl -v givse me "This is perl 5, version 20, subversion 2 (v5.20.2) built for aarch64-linux-gnu-thread-multi" I had used what was described as a minimal Debian for the C2, I will download the "Jessie server" from here http://www.armbian.com/odroid-c2/ now and see how that goes. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: Squeezelite - a small headless squeezeplay emulator for linux (alsa only)
I am playing with an Odroid C2 http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G145457216438_idx=1 using it with Debian Jessie and a ES9023 DAC via the C2s I2S interface. I installed Squeezelite using apt-get install and all works fine. However this provides version 1.6.4 so I tried to update to latest version. I un-installed 1.6.4 and did wget http://squeezelite.googlecode.com/files/squeezelite-armv6hf (my usual method of installing Squeezelite). However it does not run and I get a message back "no such file or directory". having installed squeezelite via this method many, many times all I can think is that The C2 and version of Debian is 64bit and causing an issue - any ideas if that would be the case or what my problem may be? Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: Squeezelite - a small headless squeezeplay emulator for linux (alsa only)
I have been playing with SOX upsampling via Squeezelite - all going well except... My current project has a Beaglebone Black feeding a miniSHARC DSP via I2S using the Botic drivers developed by miero. After some experimentation I have this working. As most of my files are CD images 44.1k the BBB is upsampling to 48k internally as it has only a single clock. To avoid the BBB doing the upsampling I am trying upsampling via SOX (assuming it to be superior to the BBB native upsampling) using the -u startup parameter and -r to set max sample rate. To test this is working I tried with -r 96000 and displayed via cat /proc/asound/BOTICAudio/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params However this is showing a rate of 48000 rather than the expected 96000. access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED format: S32_LE subformat: STD channels: 2 rate: 48000 (48000/1) period_size: 1024 buffer_size: 16384 So I really do not know if SOX is upsampling from 44.1k or if its the BBB. If SOX is upsampling then why only to 48k? The startup I am using looks like this: squeezelite -o hw:CARD=BOTICAudio -n Botic96 -a 16384:1024:: -u mIX -r 96000 -z Even tho it only shows a 48k stream it does seem to be getting thru to the miniSHARC. The miniSHARC can run at 48k or 96k, I have it running the 96k SW. I have also tested running from the BBB directly to a ES9023 DAC via I2S/Botic drivers and I get the same 48k. All I can think is some restriction/effect of the Botic driver or maybe the -a startup param which I had to have for these drivers (earlier conversation with Adrian). As a control test I tried all this on a RaspberryPi running I2S directly to a ES9023 DAC, with the -r set to 192000 it displays as having a 192k data stream. Any suggestions gratefully accepted! Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: Squeezelite - a small headless squeezeplay emulator for linux (alsa only)
Hi, I connecting a Beaglenone Black via I2S using an code supplier by miero. I am connecting to a miniSHARC which runs at 48 or 96k (user selectable) and any input not running at those frequencies gets converted via a SW ASRC implemented in the main DSP module. So my aim is to get the I2S signal at 48/96K and avoid the ASRC in the DSP which I assume is greatly inferior to sox running form Squeezelite on the BBB. From a post by John Swenson a while back I read The current implementation in Squeezelite does upsampling to the highest interger rate your DAC cupports. Thus if your DAC's maximum rate is 192, it will upsample to 44.1 to 176.4. If your DAC does not support 176.4, you can use the -r option (or max sample rate in the gui) to set the max rate to 96, then squeezlite will upsample to 88.2. Even upsampling to 88.2 will usually make a significant improvement. There has been talk about giving the upsampling more flexibility so you could choose 192 in this case. Is this still the case? I play almost exclusively 44.1k files and would like to upsample to 48 or 96K - is this doable? If the restriction exists is it in Squeezelite or sox? Installed as per post #1 in the thread and all running fine on my Wandboard Dual. Haven't actually attached to my stereo but its available through LMS and seems to be working fine. Install isn't too bad tho obviously not as simple as the CSOS type .img file. Having loaded Archlinux on my BBB in the past I have become familiar with that type of install. The Squeeze part is straight forward enough. Only thing not working at the moment is Wifi. I followed the instructions but wlan0 never became visible. Anybody else got that going? I know this is an early release but looking great so far, I like the fact that I can install Arch on the 3 platforms I use for Squeezelite players (Pi, BBB, Wand) and eventually may install on them all (currently Debian on BBB and Picoreplayer on Pi). One suggestion is having an option to autostart Squeezelite after bootup. That and having Wifi covered which I assume will get added sometime. Anyhow thanks Triode, I was disappointed to hear CSOS was having legal issues but this may actually suit me better I think. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
Hi Steen, thanks for the response. I understand your concerns and realise the key issue is the ability to run microcore on the BBB. I have been experimenting with a few different players in the last 6 months. Right now I have a Wandboard running CSOS, a RPI running Picoreplayer with ES9023 I2S attached and a Beaglebone black also with I2S attached ES9023 running the Botic drivers that JackofAll mentions under Debian/Squeezelite. My preference in terms of the software is Picoreplayer because of its simplicity, robustness and speed to boot. My preference for Picoreplayer over CSOS is based on my usage which is simply for a basic Squeezelite player whereas CSOS has greater functionality. So maybe a cutdown, player only version of CSOS is the answer if Picoreplayer remains exclusively RPi. In terms of DACs working with the BBB I have trier bother USB and I2S attached ES9023 but I know others using the Botic drivers have user ES9018 DACS. As I understand it the intention is that the drivers will be as generic as possible and cover most DACS that require a I2S input tho I understand there are flavours of I2S! I will look into trying microcore on my BBB in the next few days and report the results. Also thanks for the update to get IQaudIO support. Hi Steen, A friend just purchased one of these http://iqaudio.com/?page_id=28 and I am setting it up for him. I was hoping to use it with Picoreplayer as its my preferred player. The Pi-DAC uses a PCM5122 as opposed to the 5102 in the HifiBerry DAC. I had assumed the existing drivers for an I2S attached DAC would work but does not seem to. Any chance you could look at adding the appropriate drivers so this DAC can be used with Picoreplayer? There is a link to their github/iqaudio page in the link above. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
Likewise a problem with settings not sticking. Changing the Squeezelite settings to I2S - the Audio= setting says it changes to I2S, at this point restarting Squeezelite gives me audio via I2s. However it goes back to the default of Analog if you boot. Bit confusing as Audio= is not a documented Squeezelite parm even tho it stops I2S working if not set. Otherwise liked the GUI - well done Steen. As an aside, just did a quick side by side comparison of the R-Pi with I2S feeding a ES9023 and my standard setup which is Beaglebone Black with XMOS USB interface feeding a ES9023 board (different board but same circuit/chip). I could not tell any difference so all good. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
Thanks I will try that. I am assuming the the module loaded for the HifiBerry DAC are not really specific to that DAC board or even to the PCM5102A chip on it. I am guessing the modules (drivers?) are actually generic for use with any DAC chip connected via I2S using the same data format. That means the PCM5210A, ES9023 type chips (which I think will be the most common of DAC chips on the market) using that same I2S format are all covered by this module. Am I correct in that assumption? Now I have this working I am thinking of building a single box housing RasprberryPi, DAC board and power supply. I would like to understand which DACs would be good candidates for this, i.e. should work with the existing modules. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
OK, its not as simple as I thought! I came across this https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/pull/461/files which obviously covers the HifiBerry modules etc.. I am guessing the modules/drivers work with the ES9023 because the I2S format is the same. Can anybody confirm this? I would greatly appreciate a brief description on how this all works. For example, would you need a separate module for every board using a PCM5102A DAC or would a generic module per DAC (or DAC type) be adequate? In the meantime I will hook up the Pi/ES9023 to my main system and see how it sounds (so far just a brief test with low level gear). Presumably the name is hard coded somewhere? Is it actually looking to see what is attached or just recognising there is an device connected via I2S? Thanks Triode. The squeezelite that is running is executed out of a script running as a daemon at bootup time. It is using the same binary file that I try to run with the -? in the example I showed (I wasn't trying to start another squeezelite, I just wanted to list the output devices, using -? here simply and an example). As I said I have now created a copy of the original binary, as I recall this is all I did Code: cd /usr/bin cp squeezelite-armv6hf squeezelite I checked the authorities on both original and copy, they were the same. Now I can do squeezelite -? (or -l) at the same time the squeezelite started via the script is running. So, it appears to me, simply having the binary named squeezelite rather than squeezelite-armv6hf means this now works. Something around how the options are parsed possibly. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: Squeezelite - a small headless squeezeplay emulator for linux (alsa only)
Hi, I am running Squeezelite 1.3 on a Beagleboard Black under Archlinux. I have created a script that runs at bootup - very happy with the result, no glitches, runs unattended for days. However, there is a strange issue I would like to understand and resolve. When the script is running Squeezelite and I try to execute a Squeezelite command, even just a -? I get the following Code: [root@alarm ~]# cd /usr/bin [root@alarm bin]# ./squeezelite-armv6hf ? [14:06:40.355093] test_open:184 playback open error: Device or resource busy [14:06:40.358222] output_init:1540 unable to open output device [root@alarm bin]# If I stop the script by issuing a stop command and try the same Squeezelite command again, I get no response on the terminal (cursor just drops to next line) but what happens is Squeezelite starts running again. In addition if I kill the terminal/ssh session Squeezelite keeps running. Now I know on my RaspberryPi/Picoreplayer and Wandboard/CSOS you can run Squeezelite query commands while Sqeeezelite is running. I am not greatly experienced with Linux under the covers and less so with Archlinux, I am guessing this has to be something to do with how I have set up the script tho I think I may have had the issue even before I set up the script. Its not a biggy as it all works fine otherwise but this is annoying me that I can't resolve it so any suggestions as to where to look greatly appreciated. Hi Steen, I saw a mention of the possibility of looking into porting Picoreplayer to the BBB in your Comments section a month back. Hi, I am running Squeezeplug and Squeezelite player on a Raspberry Pi. All runs very well using a PCM2707 based USB DAC. Using a Hifimediy Sabre TE7022 basd DAC I cannot get it to work. When I install Squeezelite it clearly recognises a Sabre DAC is attached, I select the Sabre DAC from the list. But having done so and completed the install it does not appear in the LMS player list. Doing same with the PCM2707 DAC all works fine. First question - this should work - right? Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong greatly appreciated. Both at different times, hard to say if a clean shutdown would have helped. Thing is when you NEED to recycle its usually because its lost contact for some reason so an orderly shutdown isn't possible. Must admit that the failed boot in the logs I sent doesn't follow my timing theory as my observation was that nothing got written to the logs. Well I have been able to get clean boot-ups regularly by having the delay between power down and up so I have put the Wandboard back into service. I will keep an eye on how future boots go. Big thanks for providing this software, the Wandboard combined with USB DAC is providing some excellent sounds, better than my stock SB Duet. You could try setting a Static IP address to the WandBoard and see if that helps. Thanks, good idea. Mostly been wireless but during my testing both wired and wireless. JackOfAll wrote: If you can pull both of those log files from the sd card after a failed boot, I'll take a look at them. Thanks for the help. I have extracted the data from the logs, bit on the large side so sent to you rather than post here. Confusing sequence of events. At one point if I powered the WB off then read the SD card on my PC, replaced SD in WB, then the WB would boot up OK. If I simply powered off and on without removing SD card it failed. I did that about 6 times and thought I had a pattern. Then I had to boot my PC and after that it fails regardless. All I can think is it must be around the state the SD card is in. Oh, I have used 2 SD cards, one class 4 one class 10, both behave the same. Thanks again. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Community Squeeze OS F19 Release 1
Reposting here from Squeezebox Replacement thread as per suggestion of JackOfAll. I have loaded CSOS-Wandboard-Dual-F19-R1-20130811-1.img onto a Wandboard Dual. Initially had problems getting it to operate on wireless but succeeded and had it running fine for a couple of days. Then it dropped off LAN so I restarted it (power off/on) but it wouldn't come active (not visible on LAN either wireless or wired). So I copied the .img back onto the micro SD card. It came up OK initially on wired LAN so set up wireless as per instructions and restarted. Wouldn't come up, same problem. Re imaged and same problem again. Also tried the Wandboard Ubuntu .img and had similar problems. Only .img that seems to survive restarts and work on wireless is Yocto. My thoughts are along the lines that the files are being corrupted on the SD card during power down/up. Any suggestions or people with similar issues? Any feedback appreciated. BTW, have Squeezelite on as Raspberry Pi and that works really well, in fact unable to tell the difference between my heavily modified CD player (my reference source) and the RPi/homemade USB DAC with FLAC files. If I can't get the Wandboard going I will go get me another RPi! Thanks. Update, have re-imaged SD card and re-tested. Jivelite comes up, web interface accessible and Wandboard recognised by LMS, all via wired LAN. I then simply issued halt via web interface, once web interface and Jivelite had gone (plus waited another minute) powered off Wandboared then powered up again. Nothing, no Jivelite, no recognition by LMS. So seems just halting and restarting causing my problem. Not at all sure that its is the CSOS image causing this - as above the Yucto image does work tho its a very small image. Any help or pointers greatly accepted.
