Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] PiCorePlayer cuts out.

I have a Logitech Squeezebox connected to an LMS box based on kubuntu,
all wired and recently it has been dropping out regularly.

I haven't bothered to try to sort this problem, but I must say I can't
understand random attacks of particular products with the complainers
having exactly no information of any value.

My own suspicion is that the player is synced to a transporter that's on
standby.

For may people testing an improvement to audio equipment works one way
and one way only. Theory > testing >conclusion. It does not go Idea >
testing > conclusion.

As an example, there is no rational theory that goes along the lines of
"low latency means better audio quality". If you can come up with a
rational reason why reduced latency improves audio then you have half a
chance of attracting any attention. Otherwise you will have to accept
the fact that an idea doesn't make a theory.

The "just try it" way of doing things will never include rational
tweakers.

I am happy to see the random stuff around, but where it affects the
mainstream I get very, very defensive.

I see random stuff as go faster stripes. They may tweak your ego, but do
nothing for performance.

Finally, I also defend the gold tap brigade. Life would be boring if we
all had the same attitude to life.

I am very firmly of the view that pCP should be at the centre of the
player.

It should remain what I can only call mainstream and also enable
experimenters to explore possibilities.

I strongly support that plan that "things to try" should remain just
that rather than being integrated into the standard player.

Multi-core processors must really bother the "triers". which core is
faster and other sleep destroying thoughts?

Something clever happens with XBMc on my odroid device. There is a
function in XBMC to turn off the device and this can also turn off the
Television attached to the odroid. This suggests there is a control
function that is implementable via the hdmi connection. (the only other
possibility being the ethernet port).

If you want a low power server the odroid does the job very
satisfactorily. Any similar small form computer with adequate power
should do the job.

There is the option to change the remote control protocol in the
squeezebox. This means you can have two in one room with different
controllers. The alternative is jvc dvd control. See player settings
remote on LMS.

Another bodge is to put a bit of tape over the IR receptor on one box.

If you set the volume as fixed rather than 100%, the volume control on
the variable squeezebox shouldn't affect the fixed one. Again see
settings audio on your player interface.

Finally use a diferent remote preamp on both devices.

Great news Sam.

I'm using Odroid as a LMS server from time to time. Works well. I have a
good set up from MAX2PLAY in Germany. The Hifiberry digi piCore Player
still floats my boat as a player.

HI,

Just for you I've tried 1.17a on my pi B with hifiberry digi card. I
can't find any problems playing through hdmi. I started the machine
running the hifiberry card, used the alsa setting page to change output
to hdmi and restarted. Single track no problems at 10 seconds to go and
also with two tracks. Playing the last ten seconds of track one. Power
supply sony phone charger and wi-pi wi-fi. playing into my Tv which
connects to my hifi via optical digital. (Hardly the best way to play
for me!!).

I'm happy to have a look at this again. I'll read through your posts
and try to cause a problem. Only issue is I don't have an hdmi
amplifier.

Thanks. I may be misinterpreting your testing methods, but I don't
think you're testing in a way to reproduce? The analog outputs of the
HiFiBerry will not reproduce the glitch, you must use the built-in
 mini-audio jack.

I'm thinking that the manner in which you're testing HDMI (running
through TV, then optical out) just has too many variables in the signal
path to identify the glitch issue. I tested with HDMI audio into an A/V
processor, and the glitch was identical to what I hear with the analog
 output.

Thanks for posting your LMS details. Ours are similar enough, although
I'm using OS X Mavericks plus 7.8.1 for the server. However I
experienced the same issue with 7.9. And I don't think it's LMS to
blame, I think it has to do with Squeezelite running on the pCP.

EDIT: Also, LMS needs to be set up to play other songs. This is because
I think the problems occurs because LMS is sending the next track to the
pCP at -10 seconds, and the is a buffer problem.

LMS - Settings - Player - Basic Settings - Play Other Songs In Album -
select Play other songs in album or directory

Hi, As I explained the analogue output is from the raspberry pi (jack
socket). My hifiberry is a digi so the only analogue out that I have is
the jack. I have tried the tracks in various ways. one track, several
tracks and an album. I move the play point to about 20 seconds and play
it through the junction form one track to the next.

The HDMI out goes to a TV, but any dropout would be noticed.

If problems occur due to issues with how-tos/FAQs, i would suggest a
gentle request for an update.

Trying to get going with some of these devices is often a bit of a
minefield, but remember many of the developers work on their projects
part time and often have several bugs to sort out all at the same time.

The 80 port change has been there for a short while. This is a
relatively new change and there are working earlier versions of
picoreplayer that will run very well. If using the latest edition then
some problems will occur.

I find it great when you can actually get round any issues and things
work well.

I have afew devices of the streaming variety. many of them stop from
time to time and without obvious cause.

Only a few days ago my Transporter stopped working and I had to do a
reboot of the OS using hold key1 down while powering up. This has been
suggested due to the clock losing connection to one of the chips.

I can only guess at power supply blips.

One stop a day seems hardly worth worrying about. The effort to find the
cause may be great.

Feedback.

picoreplayer 1.17a working well on pi model b, hifiberry digi, wi-pi
dongle.

For some reason I found persistence required to get to the device
working.

One issue with 1.17a may be that the dongle is on by default with the
settings of a developer. I think that to get it working I had to change
the setting to off, reboot with the dongle plugged in and then reset to
on. possibly further reboot required when the dongle lights up. Exactly
when the scanner starts working I don't know, but inputting the wi-fi
settings manually worked for me.

I never did get an on line update to 17a from 16 so reinstalled the OS
to the SDcard with win32Diskmanager. Finally working on port 80 and the
webgui makes sense. Sounds great.
Thanks steen and greg.

Steen, what audio file formats does the pi with piCorePlayer support

comparable to the SB Touch than the Receiver? By the way, I would not
worry that posts are a bit light here, I would take that as evidence
that most have it working without problems.

In an earlier post you worried that there only seemed to be about 700
users of the piCorePlayer. I am afraid that is probably just an
indication that interest in the Squeezebox system is now pretty niche
and only a tiny subset of that niche are prepared to build their own
 players.

I had two friends who used to own Duets. Both have now migrated to Sonos
since Logitech stopped making new players. Neither had a need to, they
just wanted a shiny new toy. Very few of us really stretch the
capabilities of this system beyond what the Sonos can do.

Your question is difficult to answer. The device is capable of what
squeezelite can play on your hardware ...with the obvious proviso, if
your dac won't play 24/192 then neither will *YOUR* piCoreplayer. I use
the hifiberry digi into a 24/192 dac so I have a limitation to 24bit. I
also use a hifiberry dac so that limits the files I can play when using
that board. Other add on boards that take the i2s data from the
raspberrypi may have other performance. HDMI seems to a be a bit dodgy,
then there's the usb brigade.well, where do you want me to stop?

 3) Click settings option in lower right hand corner

 4) Click the Information tab in the Settings window

 6) Start a new browser tab

 12) In browser fifth tab address bar enter \\testplayer:8077
 - this should be the piCorePlayer splash screen
 13) Click Squeeezelite settings menu bar option
 14) Enter 12.168.1.138 in the Squeezelite server IP entry box
 - this IP address is found in the browser fourth tab in the Logitech

 15) Click Submit button
 - this should produce output from the variable updates, verify the

Hi,

Just an interesting question.if the answer's obvious be kind.

I start up the picoreplayer using a wifi connection. Then using a web
browser access LMS. I then change the server from say 192.168.1.102 to
192.168.1.113 and the web gui fails. The player works fine through LMS,
but the webgui 192.168.1.198:8077 fails. Restarting onto the default
server, the webgui works again?

Hi Steen.

I think I found my problem, it was probably caused by restarting and not
using the interface in the correct order. I've written up what I think
is bullet proof for people like me. That is, some understanding, but
still able to mess things up on occasion. If it's helpful please use,
rewrite or discard as you feel fit.

Mike.

INSTALLING IMAGE ON SD CARD

1. Download and install Advanced IP Scanner
(http://www.advanced-ip-scanner.com) and win32imager
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager) Note: Your risk not
mine... (Windows programs) (I think the advanced IP scanner is safe, but
don't quote me on this)
2. Download piCorePlayer 1.14c or whichever image you wish to use.
3. Plug your small SDcard into windows computer. Mine was 4Gb. The
autoplay Removable Disc window should appear. This should give you the
name of your SD card. Mine was G. Note the letter and close box.
4.Type win32 into search box. Win32discimager program should appear in
the list. Double click the line and win32Disk imager should start. You
will have to give the account permission.
5. Click blue folder box next to long box. Select a disk image window
should appear. The image should be in the downloads folder, unless
you've put your piCorePlayer1.14c.img file in some far away place.
Click the file you want to image and then the open box.
6. Device box should have the letter G or whatever you noted and the
Image file box should look like this
C:/Users/Mudlark/Downloads/piCorePlayer1.14c.img.
7. DOUBLE CHECK Device box to make sure you are using the correct SD
card. If you have the wrong card here and it's your collection of
Auntie Jane's Wedding photos, they could be lost forever..Best
to disconnect all drives you don't need for this process, including usb
drives, and anything else you don't want to lose. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
8. Click write after double checking the box and watch progress.
Complete - Write Successful box should appear. Close this and the
imager program window.
9. Clicking Computer you should see local disk(C) local disk(D) and
Devices with Removable Storage (1) piCore(G:) or similar. Notice how
teeny the installation is. Mine shows 3.53 MB free of 19.9 MB. The rest
of the SD card isn't used, but don't worry it will still be there if you
want to use the SD card to retake the wedding photos you lost
above.

I mention this because if you forget what's on the SD card and you stick
it into a windows computer you might see that information and worry
what's happened to your card. Don't worry, just remove SD card from the
slot and move on to the next bit.

INSTALLING piCore Player and hifiBerry digi card. (This might also work
for the DAC card, but I've not tried it yet)

1. Plug in ethernet cable, SD card (from above), and spdif or coax
output from the HifiBerry board. Plug in WiPi adapter or your own (I've
only tried the WiPi dongle).
2. Plug in micro USB power cable (after having connected the wall wart
to some power, of course). My WiPi didn't go all flashy at this time.
3. Use your windows machine and Advanced IP Scanner (You should find
this by typing scanner into the search box.) Double click Advanced IP
Scanner and click scan button.
Note the IP addresses which should appear. Mine are:-

piCorePlayer.default 192.168.1.113 Raspberry Pi Foundation MAC address
piCorePlayer.default 192.168.1.198 Nisca corporation MAC address

Ethernet is 113 and WiPi 198. Note these two IP addresses. They are only
local to your network so don't worry. The MAC addresses are specific to
each device.

This program should also show the running Logitech Media Server computer
and your other players. Sadly I can report an android phone, Squeezebox
2, squeezebox controller, transporter and a touch. A Cyrus music
controller, two televisions and the cat's personal smart phone (I made
the last one up)

4. Type 192.168.1.113:8077 (but use your ethernet connection not mine)
into an internet browser. The piCorePlayer interface should appear on
your screen.
5. Open squeezelite settings. Click I2S-audio Digi button and then the
submit button.
a New screen should appear with Audio ouput is set to: I2S HifiBerry
Digi out. Click GO Back button at the bottom of the screen.
6. Go Back to Main Page screen and click the third button

Hi Michael,

When I first installed kubuntu we were advised to install the 32bit

kubuntu 14.04 when it's released and reinstall all my data.I hate
doing this but it's going to have to be done sometime. I might as well
start now. I've looked at an update to the kernel then reinstalling 64

is on 12.04 LTS so that can stay there for a while...

Thanks for the information.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite

2014-03-17 Thread mudlark

Hi Steen,

I've just installed new image 1.14 and now using wipi dongle and
hifiberry digi.

The player works just like wired with no drop outs.

Excellent work.

Just a recap for people like me.
1. Download image and install onto SD card.
2. Turn on raspberry pi with wipi dongle and cable ethernet. My
interface is 192.168.1.113:8077.
3. Go to wifi settings tab.
4. Click scan button. Copy and paste wifi address.
mine looked like this:
Available WIFI networks:
1 : BrightBox-** (secure) (Signal strength: 64%)
2 : TALKTALK-** (secure) (Signal strength: 41%)
The stars are six 16 base numbers and/or letters.
5. Put your password into box. Click submit and save will connect to
this wifi button.
6. Go back to main page and click restart button. Unconnect the wired
ethernet cable and blue flashing and success should occur.
7. Slight downside is the boot process takes a while on my machine.
8. New interface (can be found on player settings in squeezelite)
192.168.1.198:8077.

Mine's playing as I type. Coms with the LMS (wired from brightbox) seems
to be as fast as the wired ethernet and no pops/dropouts noticed.

The sound quality of piCorePlayer1.13 and the new HiFiBerry Digi is
perfect I tested it up to 192 kHz Flac.
If you want a relatively cheap and good sounding solution I really think
that these i2s sound cards are worth considering and we don't have the
same problems with clicks and pops like some of us have with a USB DAC.

However, there is also good experience with USB-DACs and the issue might
be improved further as there is active development in the USB driver
 from the Raspberry community.

 Steen

This card works very well. Easy bit of soldering, plug in, update the
picoreplayer and off it goes. 24/96 as clean as a whistle and also plays
24/192 file on coax.

Thanks steen, triode etc and Dan at Crazy audio.

If you want the benefits of squeezeserver improvements then eventually

(7.6.0 has lost my library and scanning always crashes after 300-500

manually locating and removing everything squeezeboxserver/squeezecenter

 not work.)

After removing squeezeboxserver again (but leaving all dependencies) I
 downloaded 7.5.5 and tried:

 but it's missing:

 LIBMYSQLCLIENT14-DEV | LIBMYSQLCLIENT15-DEV | LIBMYSQLCLIENT16-DEV

 I'm a bit stuck.

Worth noting: the old squeezeboxserver (7.5.3 I think) used my existing
MySql server instance and I assume my library is still in there intact
as 7.6.0 seemed to use SQLite judging from the logging. I'm reluctant
to point 7.6.0 to MySql in case it trashes it.

 Thanks,

 (also posted on Logitech forums)

My personal advice would be to upgrade your server to 10.04 LTS as I
believe all the dependencies will be Ok and you will get mysql sqlite
upgrades.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Shortcuts In Ubuntu

2010-10-08 Thread mudlark

if you aren't a fiddler with your computer then the 10.04 edition might
be better as this is a long term support version.

I am using 10.10 at the moment and it seems to get better and better. I
use kubuntu and so sound has changed, but if you are just using the box
as a server then I can't see why you would want to wait.

You can always try a live version of ubuntu first. This uses a cd of
the operating system and runs from memory so it won't damage your
windows system.

If you are not short of space you could set the box up as a dual boot
machine. All this does is put ububntu in a new partition on the hard
drive.

[SlimDevices: Unix] 24bit files on transporter are stuttery

2010-09-21 Thread mudlark

Hi,

I run my transporter from a wired ethernet. It stutters badly with
24/48 files. It plays 16/44.1 ok.

My SB3s both play the 24bit files OK.

I'm running kubuntu 10.04 and 7.5.2 todays build.

Does anyone have any ideas or can anyone give me any help?

Mike

Why does a major bug not get fixed? The bug applies to anyone using kde

don't know but I can guess that anyone using debian would have exactly
the same problem.

SBS depends on mysql so why doesn't the damn thing have it's

Easy question, and the answer doesn't relate to time issues, or any
other crap just a bit of semi rational management. Why close a bug when
it's still an issue? If Pat or yourself can be bothered it's bug 14905.

you should be Ok with upgrades at present, however, I think the next
version isn't too far away. If it worries you the nagging just disable
the repository until there is a new version. Alternatively change the
rep back to stable and it will go away until the new production version

[SlimDevices: Unix] Linux support is beta only??

2009-11-15 Thread mudlark

I have recently made my first request fro support from Logitech and
after receiving little help I have now been told that support for linux
is beta.

Personally i describe myself as a reasonably knowledgeable punter and I
am very much on the edge of developer world. The issue that I raised
with logitech was about a fundamental issue for quite a large number of
linux users. (I would guess).

I have received some help but I find the Logitech view seems to imply
that I cannot expect any reasonable answer because they only give beta
support a bit rich to the volunteer community.

Hi Mike,

Linux is only supported in a beta level. Presently the issue is
resolved in our nightly dev build (7.4.2). If you install
mysql-server-5.1 before you install Squeezebox Server 7.4.2 it should be
able to install without any issues. You can download the nightly .deb
file here http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.4

Regards,

Trevor F.
Logitech Squeezebox Tier 2

In regard to the above post which is a quote from the last load from
support, I can state that the issue is not resolved. If it is resolved I
would be rather grateful if Trevor would give me the evidence. The fact
that my bug has been closed doesn't mean the matter has been resolved.

As you can probably work out I am very disappointed about the response
from Logitech. How do you feel about this issue?

Mike.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Linux support is beta only??

2009-11-15 Thread mudlark

I now have three replies which are very poor. I am not blaming the
developers because I understand that Windows 7 is the current priority.
what i am complaining about is the fact that they have given me no new
information and after long periods of time. In fact they referred me to
a bug that they said was raised by developers. This was total crap
because I raised the bug and I am not a developer. I don't expect
instant responses or to be treated as someone special, but when a
problem arises that appears to be of importance, I expect some sort of
rational approach to a request for customer service to the official
channels rather than via the Forum. I can cope with much, but sloppy
twaddle is not acceptable and I have no choice but to complain, because
otherwise how can things improve.

Finally i will say that the three devices i have bought amounting to
£1,500 I think gives me some call on a decent customer care process.

I don't know what has happened with the training of staff over in
America. bizarre in my view. When I had a problem with a previous
logitech device the customer support was great. That was from
switzerland.

i don't think I can go anywhere with this on the bug front, but if you
can suggest a constructive way forward I would be grateful. I am now not
willing to test the fix because I have fixed my system and i don't fancy
starting again from scratch with kubuntu 9.10. I cannot put the time in
when the company seems totally indifferent to my efforts to get this
issue solved.

I know it is strange, but I actually care about the squeezebox and
linux. Currently new users cannot download a new version of release
kubuntu and release squeezebox server and expect it to work out of the
box. I am beginning to think there is a laissez-faire attitude to linux
creeping in. Is it a keep out of linux unless you are an expert or
windows 7 is where most of our customers are so ..

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Ubuntu newbie question

2009-11-10 Thread mudlark

i would strongly suggest using a separate hard disk for the operating
system. it makes back up easier and takes the pressure off the main hard
drive where the operating system lies.

Also when the main HDD fails you can take the data drive out of the
machine and start again with NO risk.

The system hdd i use is a small lap top type which is less power cooler
etc so when no music is played the data drive takes it easy.

upgraded to 7.4.2 testing as recommended in this thread. Upon the

Fortunately all the pref files and even the database had been kept, so
on reinstall of SBS everything was back.

 Weird.

I think the problems also apply to mysql-client as this has been a
problem for me. It goes like this (i think!). SBS has mysql-client-5.0
installed so when the Kubuntu upgrade sees this it would remove SBS. If
you had upgraded Mysql-client to 5.1 before upgrading to 9.10 i think it

complaining about Logitech on this thread just reduces the confidence of
