Congrats on getting it all up and running. As 8.04 is the long-term
support version, you should be just fine running that vs. 8.10. At
least until 2011, if I recall correctly. :)

Be careful where you tuck the box away. As I've just discovered on my
own server, you may need to get back at it with KVM in order to
diagnose certain problems upon boot up. My box had gone for 208 days
without having an fsck run (bad) and crapped out on me earlier this
week. The kernel panicked and upon reboot would only go to a root shell
to run a full fsck. No network services were started, so I had to haul
the whole box up to my work desk in order to get a monitor and keyboard
on it to fix the problems...

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Setting up squeezecenter in Ubuntu 8.1

2009-01-03 Thread jbraveman

I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions. Being an linux newbie
this process was slightly painful. Fortunately, I've got everything up
and running.

I went back and did a fresh install of 8.04. My rationale is that most
of the documentation on the web is geared toward this version. I
immediately installed all of the updates.

I used these instructions to mount my freenas shares:
http://thatsquality.com/linux/mounting-windows-smb-file-shares-using-cifs

The wiki on this topic is about the same, but difficult for me to
understand.

Using the file browser I right clicked on these newly mounted shares
and was able to create working symlinks, which I copied to my music
folder.

I installed squeezecenter with these instructions:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/DebianPackage

I used the testing main option and 7.3.2 (24460) got installed. It ran
and played music perfectly. Scanned all of my files (about 32k). Even
my 24/96 flacs played.

The only residual issue is that the machine hangs when it restarts.
Apparently this is a known issue with unmounting of the cifs volumes.

I setup desktop remote and can get in with VNC from my vista lappy.
The squeezecenter menu is available also through port 9000.

The last step is to unplug the montior and keyboard and tuck it away.
I'm a little nervous it will stop working after I move it. There is
also a squeezecenter update waiting to be downloaded. I'm not sure I
will until something stops working.

The squeezebox is better than I expected and this process has been
totally worth it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Setting up squeezecenter in Ubuntu 8.1

2009-01-03 Thread pablolie

I'd greatly recommend goping to the Ubuntu forums.

Everything (except for listening to m4a's) can be set up without going
to the command line interface (with its potential risks to Linux
newbies, don't ask me how I know).

There are programs in open universe to set up volume management, and
about the first thing you should do after installing Ubuntu is to go to
software updates and look for "restricted" Ubuntu packages, which will
give you everything SC needs to run smoothly.

I did a clean install of SC 7.3 on a Ubuntu 8.10 system, and the only
time I used the command line was for the custom-convert file.

I am pablolie in the Ubuntu forums as well, and I think first time
vanilla Ubuntu installers can probably learn quite a bot of the stuff
needed to get SC and some other software to run by checking my
questions there.

SC 7.3.1 also needs the extra file.

What happens is that Squeezecenter attempts to start and times out
after 5 second then continually tries to restart. If your browser
times out, I would say that you need libfreetype6 to get the SC
instance of mysql started.

Try it

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Setting up squeezecenter in Ubuntu 8.1

2009-01-02 Thread egd

First off, let's clean things up and make sure SC is correctly
installed. Make sure that you have added SC to your repository via a
text entry in /etc/apt/sources.list:
Code:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

, scroll through the file and check your entry according to
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/DebianPackage. Then run the
following:

Code:

sudo apt-get remove --purge squeezecenter
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install squeezecenter

If your library is located on the Freenas box and you're wanting to
connect from another Linux box I'd recommend you use NFS and mount the
library as follows:
Code:

sudo mount freenas_server_ip/name:/share /local/mount_point

If you need to use SAMBA, first off, let's make sure you have 'samba/
cifs correctly installed:'
Code:

sudo apt-get install samba samba-tools system-config-samba

After all the abovementioned has been completed you need to point SC to
your library. For SAMBA path you will should set up a share as
explained 'here'

I believe SC is up and running fine, but is not playing nice with the
symlinks. A quick way to diagnose the symlinks would be to create
another directory somewhere on local storage and put a few music files
in it. Then, remove the symlinks you made to NAS and put a new one to
the local directory with the few files, and see if SC will scan those
files using the symlink. If so, then you know the problem lies with the
NAS mount and not the symlinks themselves.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Setting up squeezecenter in Ubuntu 8.1

2009-01-02 Thread jbraveman

Thanks for the help.

Links were created sucessfully but I'm not sure they work.
Squeezecenter doesn't scan them. When I click on the link it itinally
says that the link is broken, but then says it's opening. It never
opens, but just hangs.

The file browser is broken again and doesn't see the other network
computers. However, I am able to bring up the freenas drives using the
connect to server function.

I had trouble connecting to to squeezecenter and was getting browser
time outs and page not found errors. I did a clean install as per the
instructions on the debian wiki page and that seemed to help that
problem.

I'm thinking about starting over with a fresh install of 8.1 and
figuring out another way to map the freenas drives. I'm guessing the
links are broken because the drives are not mounted properly.

What would be the best way to mount the freenas drives in Ubuntu 8.1?
CIFS? NFS?

Thanks.

You don't need to say 'Filesystem', just

Code:

 /home/joshua/music/MusicAG

And I'd have expected the whole symlink definition to look more like
this:

Code:

ln -s //freenas/disk1/Music\ A-G /home/joshua/music/MusicAG

assuming 'freenas' is the name of your drive (you can instead use its
IP, e.g. 192.168.1.10 or whatever). You also need to indicate that
there's a space in 'Music A-G' by putting the 'escape' symbol before it
(the \ as in Music\ A-G), since GNU/linux does not like spaces in file
names.

moral of the story is to always update the os before proceeding.

My next problem is how do I create shortcuts to the folders with my

Mmm... The smbfs package should be in the main repos, not third-party,
which is why I suggested above that you try a different repo. But if
you can get the package from the ppa repo you mention, that'll do, I
guess.

Hope it's working now!

Your /etc/fstab file (as you've correctly edited it) is trying to use
the cifs file system; but 'mount' looks like it's reporting that you
haven't got it installed.

And that makes sense, given that you couldn't get the smbfs package.

What's the output from doing this in a terminal?

dpkg --get-selections | grep smb

If you've not got smbfs installed, that's what you need to
research/fix. I've had a bit of a quick dig about to see if there's
any problem with the Intrepid repos, and I can't turn up anything
obvious.

So...

This is a bit fast and dirty, but try editing /etc/apt/sources.list and
removing the # from in front of all the lines that begin

"# deb http://...";

Save sources.list, and then do

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude safe-upgrade

When it's finished, again try
sudo aptitude install smbfs

If it fails again, try a different repo. Go to
, open
Settings/Repositories, then click the 'Download from' dropdown; select
'Other' and click the 'Select Best Server' button, and 'Choose server',
etc.

Then go to a terminal and do again

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
sudo aptitude install smbfs

Does that get your smb/cifs installed?

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Setting up squeezecenter in Ubuntu 8.1

2009-01-01 Thread jbraveman

I did this:

First, let's create the mount folder. You will need a separate folder
for each mount.

sudo mkdir /media/mountname

Then edit your /etc/fstab file (you need root privileges) to add this
line:

//servername/sharename  /media/mountname  cifs
guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,codepage=unicode,unicode 0 0

Where

*
guest indicates you don't need a password to access the share,
*

uid=1000 makes the Linux-user with specified uid or username
owner of the mounted share, thereby allowing that user to rename
files,
*

the combination iocharset=utf8,codepage=unicode,unicode allows
access to files with names in non-English languages. This doesn't work
with shares of devices like the Buffalo Tera Station, or Windows
machines that export their shares using ISO8895-15. With these the
codepage argument has to be codepage=cp850, otherwise characters like
the German 'Umlaute' are displayed as garbage.

After you added the entry to /etc/fstab type:

sudo mount -a

I got this:

jos...@dell-desktop:~$ sudo mount -a
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on
//192.168.1.250/Disk1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
need a /sbin/mount. helper program)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Specific instructions for the freenas would be most appreciated.

thx.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/smbfs

CIFS is installed with the samba package. You're right, 'smbfs' is
deprecated in the fstab configuration, and you should use CIFS there
instead.

Hope you sort this out - others here use FreeNas, and I hope they will
chip in with advice, too.

Thanks
1) I downloaded and clicked on the package. I will try the other
method.
2) sudo apt-get install smbfs - ...Package smbfs is not available.

that's the first instruction for most of these guides. It would seem
that smbfs is defunct. the freenas can use cifs or nfs as well. There
are some additional instructions for cifs which I will try next.

thanks for the suggestions.

Did you do this by modifying your /etc/apt/sources.list and following
the other instructions for installing the STABLE version as described
here?
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/DebianPackage
That has normally worked without problems for me with Ubuntu.

You need to install and configure a network file system (Samba/CIFS) to
mount these drives when your system boots. See, for example,

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently

This is a bit fiddly the first time you do it, but is really quite
straightforward if you follow a good HowTo carefully. I'd recommend
reading the whole process before you start. And I prefer the secure
method of a password file (.smbcredentials in the HowTo above).
