Re: [OT] Re: Maven Warning. Ubuntu Users.; javacodegeeks.com : Global Impact at the highest levels.

2020-01-11 Thread Zahid Rahman
After some years of commercial software development experience It dawned
on me
that I have gathered a new sense.
I don't know what the name for that sense is.
This sense shows me what components I need to make an application.
An application which solves many problems I know of.
I call it a prototype application.

You could say that I have a sense for system integration.
To do integration I do many "hello world" exercises to see if that
"hello world"
will address a certain problem which will appear in an application of that
type.

THAT SAID.

I am using UBUNTU 18 , actually KUBUNTU because in my view it is the most
stable linux operating system. I have never have any problems with it all
ever.

Naturally I use apt-get install to download software such as MAVEN , like
all linux users.

Once I had downloaded maven I was using it for a number of JAVA components
or more accurately JAVA paradigms{frameworks}. The "hello world" I mention
tests and runs paradigms and to see if a particular paradigm will be a
part of or a component of my prototype application.

THAT SAID. I didn't want to say any of it because that is fruit of my
labour.

I was running these maven program by copy and paste from link below.
https://struts.apache.org/maven-archetypes/

I was getting same warnings I had got from other "hello world" runs.
As my goal is to integrate components in to one application these repeated
warnings became a concern to me.

SO
I went to the maven user group to find out what the issue was.
I did find out what the issue is and it is relevant struts because of this
page.
https://struts.apache.org/maven-archetypes/
in my opinion.

SO
I decided to share the fruit of my labour with effected parties and also
bugs were raised as a result by relevant concerned person.

SO in light of the above if any one persons agrees with that codewallop of
political , non-technical post, non relevant off topic . Then please log
me off as a troll and ban me forever OR apologise and admit that your
technical level is 300 feet below mine.

It was more of a "why are you posting this here" than a recap of multiple

Re: OT: Architectural Semantics: Model View Presenter

2014-04-08 Thread Dave Newton
IMO the real differences are who decides what view (C in MVC, e.g., an S2
result), and what preps data for the view (C in MVC, one or more Ps in
MVP). Some people use things like the S2 "" tags to provide some
multiple-P-like functionality but I'm pretty "meh" on that usage.

Personally the differences generally boil down to either some trivial
push/pull of functionality or simple definitions, although there's probably
a bit more to it than that.

OT: Architectural Semantics: Model View Presenter

2014-04-08 Thread Ken McWilliams
Marked as OT because this more of a conceptual issue and has to do with
talking to .NET developers regarding framework difference than with
framework use.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the Model View Pattern (MVP) pattern. My
issue is that I can't really differentiate it from what I do in Struts2.
But in no documentation is there any claim that Struts2 follows MVP. Also
it seems to be a term that only shows up mainly in Microsoft circles, is it
a sort of branding?

Given the Wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model%E2%80%93view%E2%80%93presenter

There is a picture at the top of the wiki article that shows the following:

Model Business Objects <=> Presenter Contains the logic for application <=>
View UI Components Has no notion of the model.

This looks a lot like, the pattern most of us take for Struts2, where the
middle part, the presenter, is replaced by the Struts2 action.

The main difference is that this is less of an abstraction than found in
most JEE applications, as the chain is typically: Data tier objects <=>
service tier objects <=> struts2 action <=> view.

I'm supposing that this extra level, isn't required for the MVP pattern and
so omitted to focus on the pattern and not perhaps would be done in best
practice.

So is then is Struts2 following MVP (in most cases)? I've read that wiki
article twice and still don't see a difference. Any light on the matter
would be most welcome.

On the other hand if there isn't a difference, we should add Struts2 to the
list of MVP frameworks at the bottom!

Ken

After putting all together,
try to send emails to different probable e-mail providers
and check if you will succeed (create your accounts there first),
many of them are using "special tricks" to avoid spam
but occasionally they block also normal senders.

Last such thing i faced was grey-listing.

2011-12-05 Thread Marcus Bond
Perhaps Apache Shiro may be something you could utilise... you would
implement an LDAP 'realm' or a SQL realm that knows how to lookup
credentials and access privileges etc.
In their lingo "A Realm is essentially a security-specific DAO " and out of
the box they provide a JDBC realm with suggested schema and, whilst I
haven't used it, they also have org.apache.shiro.realm.ldap.JndiLdapRealm
(abstract class available too if not quite what you're after) so you may be
able to save yourself a heap of implementation.

http://shiro.apache.org/realm.html
http://shiro.apache.org

I have used this framework as part of a Spring based web app using a custom
realm to authenticate users stored in CouchDB and also implemented a JPA /
Hibernate realm (DAO), it's easy enough to get to grips with, active and
helpful mailing list and it seems to be catching on..

Based on that, I am going to reiterate my original pointer to the DAO
pattern. What you are looking for (IMO) is too high-level to be be
implemented by a framework. There are ambitious attempts, such as
spring-data (http://www.springsource.org/spring-data). However, you
will see that they don't mention LDAP support. Conversely, if you read
the original link about the DAO *pattern* and implement that pattern
using a good IoC (spring), you will achieve your goal with very little
effort. Then, you will find that spring / struts play nicely together
and you will be very happy. As a reassurance, I use the DAO approach
with IoC and have a library, developed internally, that we use to
manage security. This allows us to retrieve users from a database, if
the database modules are wired in, or use LDAP if the LDAP / Active
Directory modules are wired in.

How about an object factory?

Interface - UserAuth
Implementation - LdapAuth implements UserAuth
Implementation - SqlAuth implements UserAuth

Factory (pseudo code):
if(ldap) {
return(new LdapAuth);
}
else if(sql) {
reutrn(new SqlAuth);
}
etc.

More pseudo code (this is inside your DAO):
UserAuth auth = Factory.getInstance(somecriteria);
auth.authenticate();

Not a Struts question, but an easy answer, so here you go:

http://java.sun.com/blueprints/corej2eepatterns/Patterns/DataAccessObject.html

"Use a Data Access Object (DAO) to abstract and encapsulate all access to
the data source. The DAO manages the connection with the data source to
obtain and store data."

IMO jQuery is better for minor ajaxification of apps. For strong GUI needs
I'd lean towards more complete, pre-packaged solutions rather than trying to
mash jQueryUI things together, which can be painful at times.

jQuery and Dojo are different programming models. jQuery is more like
a scripting tool; Dojo is more like an object-oriented programming
model. I've used jQuery for several months now and find it very
powerful. I haven't used Dojo because I don't want to learn another
OO-like technology on the front-end.

AFAIK the Struts dojo plugin is deprecated, but I'm sure Dave can tell you

How the data is retrieved isn't relevant, unless you need to implement
paging, which is a matter of offset and length.

Please search the web for "sql injection".

By making it unnecessary to keep your entire list in session or

I'm still not sure I understand. It sounds like you're saying you'd
rather type something like:

mvn createPackage -where=java com.mycampany.services

than:

mkdir src/java/main/com/mycompany/services

What benefit would you derive from having Maven do this for you?
What's the actual problem you're trying to solve?

Seems like it's a lot more work, as you'd need to tell Maven where to
put it (potentially in more than one place, for example, you might
need both Java source, and XML resources, so two directories would
need to be created.

instead of creating the packages manually, I prefere use Maven to create

I have this :

/src/main/java/com/tuto/maven/beans*

and I want to use a maven command line for creating the packages :

*/src/main/java/com/tuto/new/maven

I hope I was clear !!

If you need any consulting or development in the Java client-side area (Swing,
JFC/AWT, core Java, etc.), feel free to give me a shout. Also I do C++ GUI
development, particularly with DirectX.

I used to be a server-side developer but have focused on client development for
the past seven years or so. If you want someone to strictly do Struts I'm sure
I'd be rustier than your other candidates but . . . I live in Atlanta and have
a successful "telecommuting" record behind me so you never know. Thought I

Thanks and good luck.

Thanks for thinking of me. The reason I've been scarce around these
parts
lately is that I finally had to get a "real" job at the end of last
year, so

I no longer have as much time to respond to questions here, and I'm no
longer in the market for a job. I'm now working at Turner
Entertainment,
and we're also looking for senior level folks, but we've been having
quite a
difficult time finding well qualified candidates ourselves. In Atlanta
my

first suggestion would be to post to the Atlanta Java Users' Group job
mailing list, but seeing as we're still looking I'm not sure how much
that

advice is worth.

[Maybe OT] Integration of a WSRP portlet into a Struts app.

2011-03-22 Thread JOSE L MARTINEZ-AVIAL
Hi,
I've been using Struts 2 the last few months to write a web app for our
users. It works fine, but now I'm facing the challenge of integrating a
third part applicacion (Microstrategy) into my app. MS provides support to
portlets and WSRP, so my idea is to provide a page in my app that will show
the MS page through WSRP. But my app is not a portal, so I'm a bit lost on
how I can integrate the portlet. I've seen Apache Pluto, which can work, but
it does no support WSRP, and my app runs on a diferente server that MS, so
it seems it's not an option. I can not use an Iframe (my first approach)
since my app will be exposed to Internet, and MS will not be exposed, so
it's not accesible from the browser.

Any suggestions? has anybody doing something like this?

   thanks

Jose Luis

In JQuery you have a function named serailize, this function will serialize
all your form's input I'm not sure about the exactly syntaxe but some things

CTRL-click?
Shift-click?
Configure the browser to open all links in new tabs? I'm pretty sure you
can do that in Firefox.

And please don't suggest blocking mouse events. I like to use those

way. It's one of the more user-hostile things you can do.

However it has 2 drawbacks in comparison with C's scanf - it doesn't take

You can reference every static content with:

/js/site.js?version=

If using Maven or Ant, in the building process generate a timestamp

Re: OT static resources, cache control, and versioning

2011-02-11 Thread Maurizio Cucchiara
I remember I wrote a simple filter coupled with a *jsp* (not a struts)
tag library.
As far as I can remember the tag library worked as resource assembler
for instance:

So in this specific case the tag library combines this two file in
just one and generates a digest based on the output content. After if
the file doesn't exist tries to write its content in a temporary
directory for instance: /tmp/c6e2e39e982b80529bdba79139aeb4e.js.
Later the servlet filter intercepts the request URL and, if it matches
the resource name, sends the file content.

In this way you can send the content to the browser with a "never
expire" header.

OT static resources, cache control, and versioning

2011-02-10 Thread Greg Lindholm
I'm trying to find out what are the "Best Practices" and if there are
any utilities available to assist with versioning of static resources
and cache-control.

I'm working on an application (written with Struts 2) that uses a
filter to apply cache-control headers to the static resources,
javascript, css, and image files.

The problem is we are having frequent releases to production and
user's browser's will have cached previous versions of the 'static'
resources. Now it is possible for the developers to manually add a
version number to each static resource file and update that version
number before each release but that would be a very fragile and error
prone procedure. To mitigate the problem we have turned down the
cache-control down to 1 hour but his is still far from ideal and only
helps if the browsers obey the max-age setting.

So what are the "Best Practices" and are there any utilities to assist?

Here is the scheme I was considering building:

Use tags to generate the static resource paths so they will include a
release number in the path.
So instead of path "/js/site.js" as in this script tag:

I would generate this with the path "/v1.2.3/js/site.js" where
"/v1.2.3/" represents the release number:

I would also write a Filter that would look for requests starting with
the "/v1.2.3/" release number. When it found one it would strip off
the release from the path and forward it to the actual path and on
return it would apply the cache-control headers.

I think this would handle the cache-control problem as the browsers
would cache using the path with the release version and this would
change with each new release.

Do any utilities like this exist already? (no need to reinvent the
wheel if they do.)

the main driver, and I'm pretty sure he was using something out of Tomcat.

XML isn't a templating language, it's a data exchange format. XML is
human-hostile.

What templating language can't?

Because JSP is verbose. And the specs of other templating languages are much
leaner.

Why not check the stuff I already mentioned? There's a lot of back-end work
to get things into a context that a JSP engine can use, which is why testing
JSP fragments is horrible and is done through a container. Hence Musachy's
work, to avoid that.

But still ew. Why on earth would I want to type this (eschewing c:out):

${person.firstName}

when I could type this?

#for (person in people)
${person.firstName}
#end

or

<#list people as person)>
${person.firstName}

What do you gain from using JSTL? You can shove the same functionality into
a templating engine that has less cognitive overhead.

What do I *lose* from using JSP? Simplicity. Immediate out-of-container
testing. Lighter-weight. Easier. Exists.

I am using it primarily for emails, but I need to be able to call the
templatizing method from within a business layer class. Something
like:

Template template = new Template(path);
Map map = getDataForEmail();
String result = template.templatize(map);

Would you like to elaborate on what makes it a poor general purpose
templating language? The el is easy to read and can handle nested
objects, arrays and maps. Most importantly, since I choose to use it
for my web presentation, I'd rather not have an entire other spec to

I am thinking about trying to duplicate/re-use/wrap/etc jstl in a

there is already work being done on this idea. Maybe I'll check in on

Are you using this for generating emails from web applications? I developed
a tag library that allows you to generate text/html emails using JSP and it
works great with Struts/Tiles/Spring. (It would probably work with
Freemarker/Velocity as well, I've just never tried it)

IIRC Musachy banged on the TC JSP engine for testing purposes, you could try
that if you're dead-set on doing this. No matter what, you're introducing
what I think is a pretty sketchy dependency, almost regardless of which

Hello,

Does anyone know of any way of using the jstl core library and el for
generic templating tasks? Specifically I need to use a templating
language to create the body of an email. I'd like to use the jstl el
and the c:if and c:forEach tags to do it. I seem to remember some sort
of jsr aiming at this, but can't seem to find it via a google search.
