[libreoffice-users] Calc: how do I change what cell a form control is anchored to?

2012-02-11 Thread Jim Trigg
I can change whether a form control is anchored to the page or to a
cell, but not what cell it's anchored to. I want to anchor it to the
cell that it populates, but it seems to always (no matter where on the
page it is) anchor it to cell A1. This is LibreOffice 3.4.5 on
Xubuntu 11.10.

Thanks,
Jim Trigg

[libreoffice-users] Calc and gradient conditional formatting

2012-02-11 Thread 451farenheit
Hi there!

I have been looking for a while and I do not find any related topic finally.
What I want is to do a conditional format between a group of data, where the
background of the cells in calc
depends on the values inside the group. For example a list of numbers from 0
to 10 where 10 is totally red on the background and 0 is white. Then, a
gradient of white to red should be seen between the values in between 1,2,3,
and so on.

Is that possible with calc? Any link for it?

Many thanks in advance!

Re: [libreoffice-users] can't save a document

2012-02-11 Thread Don Myers

Hi,

I didn't have any luck with Tom's link. I did a little research. In
Ubuntu, this user file is at:

/home//.libreoffice/3/user

In Ubuntu, if you are using Unity, click the home folder in the launcher
bar (normally just under the Dash button) , then move your mouse to the
top bar where the menus appear. Then click view, then show hidden files.
When you look again at the files and folders, you will see .libreoffice.
In Linux, a . before a folder or file name means it is a hidden file or
folder. Go to the user folder name, and rename it to something like
userbackup. Then when you open LibreOffice the next time, it will create
a new user folder. I everything works in there, then you can copy back
the contents from the contents of the backup file until the corrupt
portion of the backup file starts the problem again.

Hi Tom,

Yes, I have a full install of Ubuntu. I have a 160 gig HD and it does not
have partitions, except for a small swap area. I still have more than 130

I learned several years ago to save all files of any importance to an

[libreoffice-users] Spreadsheet -- General searching guidance...

2012-02-11 Thread Barry Smith
I have always been fascinated by statistics.

I'm trying to understand the math behind powerball statistics, but my
spreadsheet experience is having trouble meeting the bill.

I'm trying to duplicate the statistics that I saw on
http://www.simplypowerball.com/?q=node/33 , most simply the GMO column
"number of games since last hit".

So far, I imported the current powerball winning numbers text file from
http://www.powerball.com/powerball/winnums-text.txt

After import, the sheet '20120208' contains draws including 20120208 and
has 8 cols from the original data--
A "DrawDate",
B "WB1",
C "WB2",
D "WB3",
E "WB4",
F "WB5",
G "PB",
H "PP",
and I added a column I "Draw DOW",
which is simply a DOW number from the draw date in Col A. The value is
either 4 for Wed, and 7 for Saturday. Plan to use that info later somehow.

Next, I added another sheet which will scan the draws from first sheet,
and report back the same stats from the SimplyPowerball webpage.

The first task is getting the GMO column working. In order to do that,
I need to understand how to lookup data in an array, report the row, and
then to subtract a constant.
Since the last draw is in row 2, I think I need to subtract 1. Yet I
digress.

>From sheet 'Pre-2008 WB' I'm trying to figure out how to scan array
'20120208'.B3:'20120208'.F1491 row-by-row, and find the first row with a
number that I'm looking for (which is in 'Pre-2008' in column A, which
contains the sequential list of white balls 1 thru 55).

I keep getting an error 502... which doesn't tell me what part of my
function is invalid.
I have tried LOOKUP function, MATCH function, and currently I am trying
the HLOOKUP function.
The current cell has the formula
[=HLOOKUP(N(A2),'20120208'.B3:'20120208'.F1491,0)] .
A2 contains the number 1, so I'm attempting to just find that a 1 has
ever been drawn at the moment.
Ideally, the formula should contain a ROW function (I think), and
subtract 2...
to show me before 2/8, when was a 1 drawn as a whiteball.

I have thrown a copy of my current spreadsheet onto the web on my
GoogleDoc account. the file link is http://bit.ly/wjJtXu .
I will continue to fiddle with the formula, but if someone would be so
kind as to teach me a little about how to find the row of the last time
that a number was drawn... I would be grateful... because the error from
Libre office doesn't really point me in a direction to fix the error. :)

Thank you,

Hi Jan,

I've had very, very good luck with LibreOffice, and prior to that, OpenOffice,
by using the direct downloads rather than the version in the repositories. Disk
space doesn't seem to be a problem. I've never used a SSD, but I've read where
they have a finite number of times that they can be written to. What I would
suggest you try is to install the version of LibreOffice from their site. I
assume with it being a netbook you are running 32 bit. If so, you can do the
following if you wish to give this a try:
1. Download the current LibreOffice version 3.4.5 from here:
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/#
Make sure you get the Linux x86 (deb) version for a 32 bit system.
Download this file to your desktop, or copy it to your desktop once you have it
downloaded.

2. Right click on the downloaded folder and extract it to your desktop. You
will then have a folder called    LibO_3.4.5rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US
on your desktop.

3. Run the following three commands in the terminal:
sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*.*                 This will remove
your current LibreOffice version from your system. You will still have your
preferences that you presently use.

        sudo dpkg -i
~/Desktop/LibO_3.4.5rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.deb
     This does the basic install.

        sudo dpkg -i
~/Desktop/LibO_3.4.5rc2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.4-debian-menus_3.4-502_all.deb
             This installs your menus.

I've never bothered with the help files which are a separate download. Once you
have done the above steps, you can easily add the portions of LibreOffice in
the Launcher bar by clicking on the Dash button (top button on the launcher
bar), and typing libre. All of the applications will show up. Simply left and
hold the button down the ones you want and drag the icon to where you want it
in the launcher.

If you should happen to be running 64 bit, I can send the instructions for it.

I don't know if there might be an issue with your configuration file being
corrupted. I've never had that happen, but some folks have. I don't have those
instructions, but others on this board do.

Good luck!

Don

[libreoffice-users] OwnCloud 3 released, "ODT is planned for future releases"

2012-02-11 Thread Fabian Rodriguez

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi,

A couple of weeks ago OwnCloud 3 was released:

"The Internet ? January 27, 2012 ? ownCloud, the popular open source
file, sync and share project announced today improvements to
functionality and stability which will enable users to get more than
ever out of their privately-hosted and owned file-sharing cloud.

Released today and available for download now, ownCloud Version 3
enables users to share files and folders with others from their
privately controlled infrastructure. Major new features in this release
include the introduction of an application store which allows users to
take advantage of the extensibility of owncloud; and the ability to
directly edit text files from a browser. ownCloud is the only technology
to offer such functionality, made possible because of its open and
modular nature."

This bit caught my attention, specially the last sentence:

"ownCloud Version 3 gives users the unique ability to access and edit
documents in multiple ways. Users can access files directly if ownCloud
is mounted via WebDAV, access them offline if the file is synced locally
with
the upcoming syncing client, or access and edit files directly from within
a browser with the new text editor.

The browser based text editor supports 35 programming languages for syntax
highlighting, drag and drop text, automatic indent and
outdent, unstructured / user code folding and live syntax checker (for
JavaScript, Coffee and CSS). The editor is based on the ACE
JavaScript Editor. The editor supports basic text fles. Editing more
advanced formats like doc(x) and ODT is planned for future releases."

Re: [libreoffice-users] can't save a document

2012-02-11 Thread Spencer Graves
Just to ensure I have read this thread correctly, the problem
happens only on one computer and only on different drives attached to
that computer.

Have you noticed other problems on that computer? If no, then I
think it is probably corruption in the installation of LibreOffice. For
that, I suggest you do the following:

1. Make sure you have all your personal data backed up. I
think you said you did, but I just want to make sure: One possible
source of this problem could be a weak component in your computer, which
could get worse at any minute. I don't think this is likely from what
I've read of your case, but it's wise to be prepared.

2. Confirm where LO is installed. This may not be
necessary if you have only one hard drive on that computer, and all
software is installed on that hard drive.

3. Run "fsck" on that drive
(http://linux.die.net/man/8/fsck). If this identifies no errors, I'd
uninstall and reinstall LO; with luck, this should fix it. If it finds
errors, is the computer still under warranty? If yes, I might take it
for a warranty repair, Alternatively, if the number of errors it finds
and fixes is small, you might be able to get away with uninstalling and
reinstalling LO -- and possibly a few other pieces of software you have
not yet noticed were corrupted. This might not fix it if the problem is
in some portion of the operating system used by LO but not often by
other software that you If it finds many errors, that suggests you will
want to do something major with the hard drive. The cheapest option
might be to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system
and all software from scratch. However, that might fix this LO problem,
but you still might have other problems not too far identified; or if
the hard drive is generally weak, it could fail in another month. The
option, I think, with potentially the least work on your part is to
replace the hard drive with a new one, and install the operating system
and software from scratch. This could be an attractive option if you
could configure your current hard drive as a second drive. With this,
you might not need to do all the installation work at once.

  Hope this helps.

  Spencer
p.s. You might want to add the things you do to fix this to your resume
;-) When I was laid off in 2009, I resolved to not buy any software if
I could find an acceptable open source alternative. Since then I've
learned a lot about computers I didn't know before.

[=HLOOKUP(N(A2),'20120208'.B3:'20120208'.F1491,0)] .

Thank you,

The fixed page size and numbering is extremely important when you are

the third paragraph of page 20" and then because the text was re-flowed to
fit in a 3" screen that paragraph is in page 100...

Another big advantage of PDF (when loaded in a PC, Win or Linux, and

being replaced (as in an epub)

There's nothing wrong with PDFs in the right context. However, that
context is not devices with small screens, such as tablets or smart phones.

Just my 2 cents;)

I have seen PDF books defined as paperback size of pages. Places like

create an e-book, I would use one of those templates to make a book
the "physical" screen size of a paperback book. Actually I prefer to
buy physical books in that size, since it is easier for me to read
that size of book over the "standard" hardcover books.

So, I would do the same for any e-book I would create.
If you used an ebook reader, you'd think otherwise. Unless you have a
large screen, PDFs do not work well. On my Kobo reader, I can zoom a
PDF to one of 4 sizes, but it can still be hard to read, unless I want
to scroll through the pages. With epub and other ebook formats, the
text reflows, so you'd have less text displayed on a smaller screen, but
you don't have to zoom or scroll to read it. You just adjust the font
size to whatever works for you.

Yes, publishers are not looking at [or doing it now] several file
formats for their e-books.

As I mentioned, O'Reilly, publishers of computer books, makes them
available in various formats, including PDF, epub, mobi and one or two
others. You can download as many of the available formats as you wish,
so that you could have PDF on your computer, but epub, mobi, etc., on
your tablet, ereader or phone. I have no idea about other publishers,
as I haven't bought ebooks from anyone else.

Hi :)
Yes, you can make a copy of the file and rename the file-ending of the copy from
.odt to .zip.  When you double-click on the file it should open in an "archive
manager" such as WinZip, WinRar.  Any images and stuff should be in a

could just right-click on the file and "Open with ..." an archive manager but
renaming the file-ending might be the easier way of doing this first few

If you have a fairly recent copy of the file on usb-stick, flash-drive or

Then the status-bar at the bottom of the window shows how much empty space

Would using sections be what you need? The LO Writer Guide contains
about 10 pages on using sections that begins around page 136.

[libreoffice-users] can't save a document

2012-02-11 Thread Janice Chandler
I am running LibreOffice on Ubuntu 11.10, Asus netbook, w/2g RAM. I use the
word processor extensively.

Frequently, when working on a document in Writer, I get a "cannot write to
disk" error. Subsequently, I cannot save in any other program. For example,
if I open a text editor and copy the text to a new file, I get the same
error message. This happens more often when operating on battery power than
when using A/C. If I do not reboot right away, I will get a total system
failure. If that happens before exiting Writer, the document I am working
on becomes corrupted.

This only happens when I am using LO in Ubuntu. This never happens in WinXP
or Win7. I haven't observed this trouble in any of the "live distros" I've
played with. Much to my dismay, I have noticed that Win can be a little
more forgiving of some hardware issues than Ubuntu. I don't have Win on
this netbook, but I never had any problems when it was installed.

How can I tell if this problem is related to LO, Ubuntu or hardware?

Thanks,

Jan

Hi Pedro,

1st - if we continue this, and I would not mind at all, how about we
kick it over to the discuss list?

But for the moment.

So we are in agreement - PDF does a great job of replicating the printed

Well, stop thinking that way (hey didn't I adomish against such

Instead of saying "see the scratch mark on tablet 4", use a hyperlink.
It will be just as valid when the pages flow differently on different

Yup - embedded fonts = hard coding.

The fixed page size and numbering is extremely important when you are

Hi Tim, others

Your the missing the point IMO - ePub formats are designed to fit the
form factor of the device (available fonts, etc also) being used to read
the content, at the time it's being presented.

PDF is just another throw back to printing on dead trees in this regard,
where the creator of the file sets the size of the layout when the file
is generated.

This has additional implications, such as page counts and the use of
page numbers in a table of contents and index, the ePub formats and the
readers work such that those things are not fixed, they are variable
adjusting as needed, again, to the form factor of the device being used
to read the file.

Best wishes,

//drew

Why not PDF? What is the advantage of epub?

If your PDF's page size is bigger than ebook reader, either text size is
too small or you have to read a page in sections which is very irritating.
With ebook format like epub, you can adjust text size, and text flow is
natural to your ebook reader. Plus, I think ebook format is usually
smaller in size(bytes).

Because epub is essentially zipped up xhtml+css.

I have used frame for a such format for the binder few years ago. It
worked well for my purpose.
Draw one tall frame (same height as 'page text area') for subheadings.
Adjust page margin accordingly.
In my case, I used two different frame styles and two different page
styles for even/odd pages.
Left page frame style was anchored to 'left/top' and 'page text area'
and linked with 'Left Page style'.
Right page frame style was anchored to 'right/top' and 'page text area'
and linked with 'Right Page style'.

Insert a frame with correct frame style in every pages.

In this way, if you insert a page in the middle, your frame will shift
automatically depending on page #.

Any other ideas, anyone?

Have you used an ereader? I have read both PDF and epub on mine and
epub is much better. I can also read epub on my smart phone, where the
screen is so small as to make it virtually useless for PDF. As for
"business", books I download from the library are often available in
both epub and PDF. Also, O'Reilly books are generally available in
several formats and you can download whatevers ones you want, including
all, if you're so inclined.

Would using sections be what you need? The LO Writer Guide contains
about 10 pages on using sections that begins around page 136.

Why not PDF? What is the advantage of epub?

On ebook readers, epub text flows as required with different font
sizes. PDFs don't.

It seems that different e-readers prefer different text formats, like
epub. They did this for "business i.e. money/profit" reasons. People
had to buy their formatted documents. Now with the conversion packages,
it is not an issue, as long as you have a conversion package.

I prefer PDF files for my documents, printer with CUPS-PDF or doPDF.
That way I keep all my specialty fonts in the document instead of LO's
tendency to replace them with its core font set.

Having external packages, instead of LO extensions do work better
sometimes, but the developers of the extensions are doing their best to
make their packages work as well as these external packages like
"Calibre". I am told that the LO developers are working on the issues I
have with specialty fonts and their PDF exporting option.

So, right now, do what works best. Create your documents in LO and then
use whatever works to convert them into the format you need for the
specific job. Most of us need to have .doc and .pdf file versions of
our documents for our co-workers or our bosses. Making them work with a
tablet/e-reader package is relatively new compared to what the
developers have been working towards. Next big thing is write a version
that will work on an Android tablet. Some people are talking about an
iPad version as well.

I have found Write2epub.
All the extensions are on a disc downloaded from Kracked Press.

I thought I would try it for converting Libre User Guides to epub format for
the iPad.
I may not have set it up correctly, but just using the extension as
supplied, I failed.
The staus bar along the bottom showed converting images and this took about
10 seconds.
It then started to convert text. The bar progressed about an inch across the
bottom, then it stopped.
An hour later and it was still stationary.
In the Documents folder, a folder had been created using the same name with
WE2_folder added
There was also a a file with the same name plus WE2_odt
I tried to convert a smaller single page odt file with exactly the same
result.

Using LO 3.5rc3 neither Export as PDF or Writer2epub works on my Mac 10.7.2
