I finally looked at it.
I think it had an error in the xml in content.xml.
I changed that and it parsed in the google chrome parser but when I 
zipped everything up it wouldn't open in libreoffice with a different error.

You can rename the .ods file to .zip and then unzip it.
The content is in content.xml.
I suggest you open a bug report.
I happened on Linux too.

I think most people reading this are just users just like you and me, so
it's not ”our suite”. You can request new features where bugs are filed,
there's information about that somewhere at http://www.libreoffice.org/.

Very subjective. For me it's the other way around. Excel is missing some
essential features that I need from time to time, so it's all depending on
what you want to do with it. They are both missing features that the other
one has, and some features are better implemented in one of them than the
other and so on.

What are they called in Excel? Just ”tables”? I don't think I ever saw them
and I use Excel at work every day.

Thanks for the reply.  I checked my spam folder, no LO there.  My expectation 
was that when I sen a note to the list for support, I would get a copy back.  
That didn't happen so I kept posting.  My apologies to anyone offended!

AutoInput only works for cells in the same column.  As I tried to explain, the 
lists of inputs are in another sheet to keep the input form cleaner looking.

So it looks like a very long scroll bar is the only option for now.

The feature is called "AutoInput". In Calc, you can set it ON/OFF in
menu Tools > AutoInput.

In Calc, if you already have a value in one cell and you want to
repeat the same value in another cell in the same column – it works
better if the range has no empty blank cells in-between, but that's
not a strict condition – then usually the behavior is as you
described.

If you have "coliflour" (without quotation marks) in cell A1, and
something else in cell A2, then in cell A3 you could start typing "c"
(without quotation marks), then a prior (partial) value would be
suggested, instead of having to type-in the complete value each time.

As of current versions, the feature works similar to a bash-like
(auto)completion, but incidentally the feature was modified several
times between LO 7.1 and 7.3, so if you are having problems with this
I would suggest trying a newer version that you currently report
(7.3.7.2).

I guess it depends on your theme, but at least for me, the active cell is
the one that is surrounded by a fat blue frame. I'm not sure how it could
be any clearer than that. Also the column and row headers have a blue
background instead of grey.

A follow up to my first reply. I wanted to investigate a bit more to see if
I could produce a macro that actually incremented values in column B based
on the corresponding cell in column D being changed.

This works for me incrementing the value in col B by +1 when the value in
column D on the same row is changed. Please note, it only works for the
first sheet of the workbook. I expect it could be made to work for the
current sheet but have not investigated how to do that. Changing the order
of the workbook tabs has no effect on which tab is recognized as the first
one. In addition to the reference I named in my first post the information
from this second reference was instrumental in making a macro that only
responded to changes in cells in column D.

Hi David,

As I understand it you have values in column B and dates in column D. When
a new date is entered in a cell in column D or an existing date is changed
you want the cell on the corresponding row in column B to increase by 1.

e.g. B1 = 5, D1 = May 5, 2019
change D1 and B1 becomes 6.
- or -
e.g. B3 = 26, D3 = blank
set D3 = Feb 3, 2017 and B3 becomes 27

Can you explain it again, but this time also mention rows?
Do you mean that a certain cell in column B, say B1, should increase its
value when you enter a new date in a previously empty cell in column D? Is
that cell always direclty below the last used row?

Do you mean that when you enter a date in the D column, the cell at the
same row in column B should be the cell above it + 1?

I guessed that you meant something like this - but no, it wasn't 
clearly stated.


If you could achieve what you ask, the result would be hopelessly 
fragile. We all make mistakes. Suppose that you enter your new date 
incorrectly. The value in column B will be incremented. Then you need 
to enter the correct date, whereupon the value in column B will be 
incremented again. How would you then correct the situation? If you 
tried to correct the value in column B manually, you would overwrite 
whatever formula there was doing the trick for you in the first place 
- and disable it. And what if you entered a correct new date but 
mistakenly for the wrong person?


There is, I think, a solution, and that is to separate data entry 
from the display you actually want to see. Construct a separate area 
- quite possibly on a separate sheet of the spreadsheet - for your 
data entry. This will have a row or column for each of your named 
"reactors", and you will add dates here instead of in the results 
sheet directly. Note that you *add* dates, so that you assemble a 
list of dates, rather than  overwriting a single entry with the most 
recent date. Now all you need to do in column B of your display table 
is to construct a formula which counts the number of dates currently 
listed for that person in the data entry area. And in column D of the 
display table you will similarly construct a formula which picks up 
the most recent date from the data entry area.


With this scheme, any mistaken entries can be corrected with the 
display table always picking up the corrected values.

Thank you for your quick response.

Unfortunately that didn't work.  That was probably because I didn't explain
myself carefully enough.

Have a look at my answer to Brian Barker, where I try to be clearer in what
I'm trying to achieve.

If there is a solution I will think all my Christmases have come at once! 
But I am resigned to the fact that there probably isn't.

new date in Column D it will automaticall increase the current value in
Column B by 1.  I cannot think of a solution - but then I only use Calc for
simple things - but was hoping that there is a solution.  If there isn't, I
will just have to try and remember to manually increase the value of Column
B every time I enter a new date in Column D.

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking for here. So in column A,
there are names, as you said, and in column B there's a number that tells
you how many times the name in Column A appeared so far?
Then I guess the following would work:
B1:
=IF(A1="";"";COUNTIF(A$1:A1;A1))
Click and drag the formula downwards.
Now, for instance B17 looks like this:
=IF(A17="";"";COUNTIF(A$1:A17;A17))
The IF is just to not display a zero when nothing is entered into the
corresponding A line.

Hi again!

I have increased all the LibreoOffice memory parameters as shown below.  
Unfortunately the screen continues to break up.
The breakup even occurs with a small simple single page spreadsheet. I 
have found upon screen breakup if I do a  S (save) the screen 
resets till the next failure.


I have also disabled OpenGL with no effect.

- Use for LibreOffice 128MB to 1000MB
- Memory per object 20MB to 50MB
- Number of objects 20 to 40

Please see the previous e-mail (see below) for system configuration.

Hi :)
The normal route is to use the "bug report" approach and then use one of
the drop-downs (or the subject-line) to mark it as a "feature request".

Sometimes things do turn out to be "Easy hacks" AND attract attention from
a dev but often it takes quite a while before things do make it into main
branch.  Even so it is good to have feature requests logged to give people
ideas in the future.

Also, maybe it's I/O related. Does this happen if you move a file elsewhere
(other drive, USB thumbstick, network share...) and try to open it from
there? Trying this might help finding the cause of the problem (or provide
a temporary workaround)

Hi. 
Near instantaneous (no noticeable lag) on my 3.6 on opensuse. 
Is this occurring with cells with text and cells with formulae. 
Does this happen with a sheet with only one cell with content (i.e. 
worse with larger sheets).

Try to enter some text into the cell and while typing
chose the option from menu. While you do not edit some text
the options stay disabled (greyed)

You can also enable the option in Tools-Options, LibreOffice-General 'Allow to 
save document even when the document is not modified'

This will prevent the Save button on the toolbar being greyed out, so you can 
click Save whenever you want.

My initial guess is that autoupdate is turned off. Check when the
spreadsheet is open that TOOLS>>CELL_CONTENTS>>AutoCalculate is checked.

Hi

I suggest you this:

1) Make the pilot data
2) If you format cell orientation (cell of pilot selected), you can
chage the orientation (Vertical in grade that you want, except the first
column). If you want to change the titles of headers, select the cell
and use F2 to do it.
3) If you want to change all the columns headers orientations you can
copy the pilot data to other space or sheet and then change the format
cell orientation (Menu-Format-Cell)

orientations, and sent it directly to Giovanni and Andreas.*

orientations, in that it is difficult to keep the text within the cell.

cell.  It seems that the text alignment feature does not extend to

Hmmm, actually i would wait until the 3.4.1 as apparently there are a huge pile 
of bugs that are fixed in the 3.4.1.  Quite possibly including this one.  
Please 
don't post the bug-report until after you have tried the 3.4.1 (after that has 
been properly released)(sorry).  


If you can't wait then please go back to the 3.3.x branch as it is the stable 
branch and 3.4.x is testing/development branch.

How did insert the hyperlinks? I use the following: INSERT >> HYPERLINK
and fill out the appropriate boxes on the form. It seems to work fine
for me.

I tried this with LibreOffice Calc 3.4.0 (actually 3.4.0rc2) in Windows Vista 
(in a Virtual PC VM on Windows 7) and links, even e-mail addresses, worked 
fine.  So this doesn't appear to be a general problem.

My spreadsheet had e-mail addresses typed directly into cells and recognized as 
links.  For Hypertext links, I used the Hyperlink button to make cell contents 
with a specific Web hyperlink (target) and separate text to show in the cell.

Which Operating System are you using; Windows, Ubuntu, another linux distro, 
Bsd 
or Mac?  For the non-Windows ones in the list (ie all the unix-based ones) it 
might be worth exploring using a command-line tool which could then be made 
into 
a button on your taskbar or something.  It would be something like

cat FileName.Csv | grep words-to-filter-for > NewFileName.Csv

As i said, i don't know the unix command-line well enough but i'm sure someone 
on this list could make it more accurate.  The | is near the left-shift key on 
Uk keyboards but somewhere around the enter key on laptops and american 
keyboards, it's not an l, on the keyboard it's usually shown with a gap in the 
middle to show its a filtering command.  


The Csv format is very handy precisely because it is basically a text-file with 
commas after each cell and so it can be manipulated even without opening a 
program such as a spreadsheet program.

Thank you Jean, but I figured it out. Data - Filter - Standard Filter -
Field name = "" - Condition = "Contains" - Value = "word or phrase to
filter" + OK. Then you can save the results.

I understood the question and what you are trying to achieve, but unfortunately 
I don't know the answer. It might be in the Calc Guide, but if you haven't 
found it, then probably not. When we learn the answer, we should add it to the 
book. It must be a common requirement. 

The are some people around who are very knowledgeable about all things Calc, 
but they may not be reading this list, or not very often. I'll pass your note 
along to one of them and see if he knows.

If I understand you correctly, this should be fairly easy:
o  Open your .csv document in Calc.
o  Apply the filter.  (I'm assuming you know how to do this.)
o  Now copy the range of filtered material.
o  Either open a new spreadsheet document or insert a new sheet into 
the existing one.
o  Paste the copied material into the new document or sheet.  Notice 
that the copy action copied only the visible, filtered cells.
o  Save the new document or sheet in .csv format: in either case, 
only the active sheet will be saved.


As has already been suggested, you can achieve the filtering and 
copying in one action (provided you have selected the appropriate 
range of material) by clicking the More button in the Filter dialogue 
and then using Copy results to... to copy the filtered results to 
another sheet.

After filtering it will.

.csv is comma delimited format and Calc will save it in that format,
only the active worksheet. You can also open a .csv in Calc and it will
open a wizard asking what the delimiter is in the file, check comma. It
will  open correctly. I believe Excel works exactly the same way. .csv
is platform independent and you can open in any spreadsheet program.

Wouldn't it be easier to filter using the command-line?  Grep?  Something like 

filename.csv | grep blah > new-filename.csv

I'm not sure how to use grep properly but i think if you want to exclude 
something then use a ! before it, eg 


!exclude-this-value

I'm not sure if you can use a list or another csv file(s) to replace "blah".  
Hmm, hastily looking through a couple of guides it looks like my command might 
be a quite wrong

I am not sure if Windows has anything like that for it's command-line but grep

Check Tools-> Options-> LibreOffice Calc-> View .  On the right hand 
side under Display make sure the  Formulas is _not_ checked.

I've just done this and it returns "3", as expected. The correct answer is
shown whether one just hits the Enter key or clicks on the green tick.
