Re: MAC OS - Still cannot eliminate OO icon from Mac desktop when program running

2020-05-26 Thread Larry Gusaas

You neglected a step in the installation process:

"Double-click the .dmg file. After verifying the file, the Mac will display
a screen which
shows OpenOffice.app, then an arrow, then an Applications folder. Drag the
OpenOffice.app
icon on that screen into the Applications folder icon on that screen."

You moved OpenOffice.dmg into your application folder instead of OpenOffice.app.

Open OpenOffice.dmg. I the window that opens drag the OpenOffice.app icon onto the Application
icon. You can them close the window and eject OpenOffice.org.

If you cannot see the file extension names (.org & .app), open Finder. On your menu bar click
Finder. Then in the drop down menu click Preferences. Then click on Advanced. Then select "Show
all filename extensions".

Greetings,

Did not have an icon on desktop when I used Word.

Again, followed every detail of installing on Mac per  instructions of :
(Q03/AQ03)Tutorial] Mac FAQ Apache OO Community Forum  by MrProgrammer 6/27/17)

•Waited for  Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.7_MacOS_x86-64_install_en-US.dmg to finish
loading.

•OO icon appeared on desktop.

•Dragged OO icon on desktop into Applications folder as per instructions: "Drag the
OpenOffice.app icon on that screen into the Applications folder icon on that screen. Macs don't
need an "install" program for this application."

(Please see screen shots of OO in Finder's Application Folder and in desktop
Applications Folder).

•Clicked on OO icon to start OO. Program started running and could use.

                                         BUT ...

•Followed additional instructions: " Use File → Eject "OpenOffice" (the dmg
file). Either delete the file with the dmg extension or put it in a safe place in the rare
case that you want to reinstall it later without re-downloading.
Sure about this?  If I deleted this .dmg file, then OO operating system no
longer available.

•End result: OO gray icon remain on desktop, when program running. (Even though
I initially dragged it into Applications Folder).

Thanks for any clarification from the Macintosh tech side. I can only hope that
the posted instructions are correct and I somehow keep misunderstanding some
salient point.

Good health to all.

From the release notes known issues at

Due to a known bug in Oracle Java installations of Apache OpenOffice on
macOS that do not
have the legacy Apple Java 6 installed will not be able to recognize Oracle
Java 7 and 8.
If not able to upgrade to Java 9 than install the legacy version of Apple
Java from the
following link: Legacy Apple Java 6. This will allow the portions of AOO
that require Java
   to run properly.

Two choices. Install the legacy version of Java 6 from
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?locale=en_US

Or install Java 12 JDK from Oracle, which will work without also having the legacy version
installed

https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk12-downloads-5295953.html

After installing start OpenOffice. On the menu bar click on OpenOffice/Preferences then go to
OpenOffice/Java and check "Use a Java runtime environment" then check the Java that is installed.

Also, check the actual file names on the desktop and in your application folder

The download file is "Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.6_MacOS_x86-64_install_en-US.dmg"
The program file in Applications, if properly installed is "OpenOffice.app"

The .dmg install file can be deleted after OpenOffice is installed.

Try the word "DICHOTOMY" It has nothing to do with classifications.

Classifications is not a synonym for dichotomy. Check any thesaurus
Because classifications is used in the definition of what a dichotomy is does not mean it is a

I tested and have no problem saved from a file on my desktop.

I am on a Macintosh machine running Mac OS 10.11.6 El Capitan. I am running OpenOffive 4.1.3.
I am familiar with ‘invisible’ locked files from my use of InDesign, which creates a visible
locked file when it opens. (I am able to open and save InDesign files from my desktop without
crashing issues.)

The OpenOffice crashes that I suffer occur when I have opened an OpenOffice file that
/resides on my desktop /and then attempt to “Save-As” . . . see the attached screen shot for
the resulting error message.

This list does not accept attachments. Please give error message or post image on a site you
can give a link to.
It seems your problem is specific to your machine. More information is needed. Sounds like a
problem with your Mac, not with OpenOffice.

(As a side note, I do not experience this behavior with any other type of file.) If I move
the same OpenOffice file into a folder — /even a folder that is on my desktop/ — open it, and
do a “Save-As” into its location . . . the file saves, without any problems. /However, if I
try to save the same file to my desktop — OpenOffice crashes/.

macOS Sierra, like all version of Mac OS X starting with Lion do not include Java an any update
to a newer version removes the legacy Apple version of Java.
The legacy version of Java can be downloaded from Apple:
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?locale=en_CA

The database portion of AOO and the mailmerge functions require Java. It is best to install the
current version of Java as well as the legacy version. It is available from

window “Allow apps downloaded from:” with the choices being “App

Underneath that choice, you should see a notice to the effect that
Gatekeeper blocked AOO from opening, and gives you a button labeled
“Open Anyway.”
But before you can click that button, go to the lower left corner and
click the little lock icon, then enter your administrator’s password.
You can now make changes to the system. Click the “Open Anyway”
button. AOO will launch.

Is this better or more current than what we have now in the OpenOffice
4.1.3 Release Notes? Our instructions have been the same for a few
years, and if the new Mac OS X Sierra adopted another approach they
might need some updates.

To be clear, I refer to the first bullet point here:

The Apple support article linked to hasn't been updated for Sierra. The option "Anywhere –
Allow applications to run regardless of their source on the Internet (default in OS X Lion
v10.7.5); Gatekeeper is effectively turned off. Note: Developer ID-signed apps that have been
inappropriately altered will not open, even with this option selected." has been removed in Sierra.

The rest of the article is valid, especially the Right click option which is the easiest way to
activate non-signed applications on macOS.

You should always state what operating system you are using and what version of Apache
OpenOffice you are using.

It keeps asking me to reopen or don’t reopen the program and no matter which
I select nothing changes.

The exact wording of the message you get would help to specifically identify
the problem.

Since you sent this email using Apple Mail I'll assume you are using a Mac. Also I'll assume
the program you are trying to use is OpenOffice.

If so the following should help:
You need to delete the folder "org.openoffice.script.savedState". It is in the
"Saved

To uninstall Apache OpenOffice: In the Finder sidebar, click Applications. Drag the app from

Empty Trash.

If you had searched the Help files on your Mac for Uninstall you would have found this

While you are precisely semantically correct, the OP was complaining of a
download hosted by SourceForge. Since the version she cited is not hosted
there on Apache's behalf most people could probably work out a way to

Well, I guess it's like everything else. Too few people seems to want the
reveal codes functionality, or at least none of them are developers. Why
would the community create something that they don't want when there are
tons of bugs (just like with any other software project of this size) to
fix?

If you want reveal codes use WordPerfect. If you want styles (much superior in my opinion) use
OpenOffice.

I found trying to use reveal codes was much more time consuming than using
styles.

To use reveal codes like in WordPerfect, the developers would have to completely redesign
OpenOffice.

This issue has been discussed many times over the years and the reasons OpenOffice doesn't use
reveal codes explained fully.

clipped
A vulnerability in OpenOffice's HWP filter allows attackers to cause a
denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly
execution of arbitrary code by preparing specially crafted documents in
the HWP document format.

clipped
Apache OpenOffice users are advised to remove the problematic library in
the program folder of their OpenOffice installation. On Windows it is
named hwp.dll, on Mac it is named libhwp.dylib and on Linux it is
named libhwp.so. Alternatively the library can be renamed to anything
else e.g. hwp_renamed.dll.

You guess is wrong. This is a Mac specific problem. See my other post.

Which archived version of Openoffice can I install and may I please have a link

The last version to run on PowerPC's is OOo 3.2.1. You can download it here:

I’ve opened library but can’t see anything called user library. All the
instructions there seem to be for windows, not mac. Advise please, Rosanne

The user library is hidden on recent versions of OS X.
Open Finder
Press and hold down the Option key
Click on Go on the menu bar, then click on Library.

The instructions were in the first post of the thread Keith gave you a link to. (Scroll up from
the post that the link opens on)

This is usually caused by corruption in the User Profile and can be
fixed by resetting the Profile. For details on doing this see the

You need to delete the folder org.openoffice.script.savedState. It is in the Saved
Application State folder in your User/Library.

Re: I want to download Open Office v3 for free...

2015-01-28 Thread Larry Gusaas
On 2015-01-27, 9:56 PM Mr Berwyn H Price wrote concerning I want to download Open Office v3
for free...:

Hi
I want to download Open Office v3 for free, in DEB format or another format so
that I can install the Writer for Linux Mint.

Why not use the latest version AOO 4.1.1? You can download it at
http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

This is because for the last 2 years or more I have been used to using the
Writer of Open Office v3 (File version 3.0.9357.500; Product version 3.00.9357)
installed from a disc on this Windows Vista and 7 laptop.
...
So, in reference to that I am asking for someones help: please can you find the
English GB Open Office v3 file on the openoffice.org website or another
'trusted' website for me to download?

The en-GB versions of OOo 3.1.1, 3.2.0, 3.2.1, and 3.3.0 can be found at
http://archive.apache.org/dist/incubator/ooo/localized/en-GB/

However, I would recommend upgrading to AOO 4.1.1

...
P.S. Please start any message with Dear or Hi Mr Price. Thank you

No.
