Re: Now Microsoft has taken over my Dell laptop and blocks printing Open Office docs on default printer

2023-04-15 Thread Joan Bagley
I have 3 choices for printing (none of which make sense):      print to file
Create single print job for collated output
Use only paper tray from printer preferences.
]I ran a printer test page and the printer model says "Microsoft PWG Raster
class Driver"--(I have a  Canon MX490 series Printer WS)  Perhaps if you could
tell me how to get rid of the "Microsoft" it would work again.  Most of the
documents I try to print, even when I open from the Apache page, say < "The
required operation requires elevation."  So I can't even try to print..  I've
had this new HP since Feb. and it's amazing I got my check book to work and my
Print Shop and my Ancestral Quest.  It seems a simple word processing program
would work as well!

Format

Sheet
Tick the box next to Grid
OK

Another way to do it is to:
Format
Cells…
Borders
…and define the borders around cells which can be of varying thicknesses,
colors, spacing to content, or even shadowed.

That  isn't correct James. The  grid lines can  be printed  by ticking the
right box in Page Set Up. I can't give you the full procedure as at the moment
as I haven't time  to run through it. But if someone else doesn't come up with

I think this is all consistent with your black ink cartridge being
empty or blocked or otherwise faulty. When you print black text from
OpenOffice, only the black cartridge and its ink will be used. But
when you use Print Screen to copy the appearance of the OpenOffice

the text you thought was black is now something very much
approximating black, but as part of colour picture. So the effect
when you print from Paint will be that the colour ink cartridges will
be used, possibly also with the black cartridge to increase contrast.
In other words, what Paint is doing to create the almost black it
wants is to combine the colour cartridges, just as does your dark yellow.

There are obvious ways to test this. Start (Windows) Notepad and
write a few words. Print that: I predict that you will find that this
fails too - confirming that it is not OpenOffice that is at fault but
very probably your black cartridge. Alternatively, go to Start |
Settings | Devices | Printer & Scanners. Click on your printer and
click Manage. Click "Print a test page". Again, if the black text
that should be part of this fails to print properly and clearly, your
black cartridge is empty, blocked, or otherwise faulty.

I imagine that the software that was supplied with your printer
incudes the facility to display the current ink levels. If the black
cartridge is empty, you have your solution; if it still contains ink,
it may be blocked or not fitted properly. It seems that the
cartridges are also transparent, so that you can take out your black
cartridge and simply see if there is remaining ink.

There is at least one other, far more complicated possibility,
involving your OpenOffice text not being black (perhaps white) but
appearing legible in the editing screen because of high contrast or
similar settings in Windows. But you'd probably know if you had arranged that.

I trust this helps.

The printer is an XP-245. It will not print black from OpenOffice . All I get
is a shadow with lines across. But if I PrintScreen into Paint is will print
from there correctly. So the black cartridge is working.
I have reloaded Open Office, and the Printer Driver. I have also tried USB

If I change the font colour to Dark Yellow, say, it will print but this is a

What on earth is the problem and how can I solve it please?

You probably need to "register" your database - which you could have

o Go to Tools | Options... | OpenOffice Base | Databases.
o Click New... and browse to your database.
o Give your database a registered name.

Now it should appear under Database in the Labels dialogue.

Hi Brian:

I am still experimenting/learning here.

You have helped me to better understand how to make use of the Format |
Page... | Sheet | Scale | Scaling mode. I find that my document's
printed output appears correctly, or at least, to my satisfaction, at
this moment, when I use the setting of "Fit range width to width/height"
and use Width = 1 page and Height = 6 pages; and I don't need to do any
manual page breaks, in this case.

Thank you for leading me to further investigate the scaling mode options
and to discover where my mistakes/errors were introduced.  (The number
of operator's errors should now be fewer!)

There are two solutions for that:

from within Page Preview.)

o Another way is to install a virtual PDF printer: freeware versions

I think the scaling mode and factor described above are the only place
where the output differs from what you have set up in your actual
spreadsheet. The screen scaling - which doesn't affect printout - can
be changed in various ways:

o Go to View | Zoom... . Experiment with the settings there to produce
the effect you prefer.

There are also two controls near the right end of the Status Bar, at
the bottom of the OpenOffice window. (You may need to toggle this on
at View | Status Bar):

o The Zoom slider allows you to adjust the zoom factor in alternative
ways:

+ Click the button where you want it to appear,
+ Drag the button to the appropriate position,
+ Or click the "-" and "+" buttons as desired to increase or decrease
the zoom factor.

o Right-click the "Zoom percent" display in the corner and select an

Hi Peter:

Thank you for providing that link, which I have quickly read through.  I
am trying to digest the info now.

Can you, (or anyone else,) verify that the sequence presented in that
article is the correct sequence of steps to be followed?

I can follow a procedure that has numbered steps, if given.

After generating the spreadsheet data for my Calc file, I:

1. select _V_iew --_P_age Break Preview to set manual page breaks;
2. select Format--Print Ranges to Define/Edit my required print range;
3. select File--Printer Settings (usually double-sided printing);
4. select Page Preview (for a final visual check);
5. select _F_ile--Print, to my printer, (or Save as a PDF file via the
   Print dialog).

in that sequence. Should I change my sequence?

Suggestions are welcomed by me.

Re: Difficulty to control printing of a Calc file

2020-04-30 Thread Joost Andrae

Hi VinceB,

use the menu item /View/Page Break Preview/

In this view you can easily drag the blue lines displayed on the page
where you want to, eg. if you want to scale the content to one page
printouts then drag the right line of the "Page 1" line to the outer
right side.

Using the right mouse button within this view you can define manual
column or row breaks at any positon you want.

Or mark the content you want to print and press the right mouse button
and select the context menu item "Define Print Range"

Afterwards you can leave this "Page Break Preview" by selecting menu
item /View/Normal/
All settings are persistent until you close the document. If you save
the document this setting is persistent if you close and reopen the
document.

In menu item /File/Page Preview/ you can use the slider to scale the
document to something you want to look it like.

If page margins do not fit then you can control these in menu item
/Format/Page/ on the tab page "Page". Within this dialog click into one
of the fields Left, Right, Top or Bottom. If you now press the PageDown
button on your keyboard then the dialog automatically selects the
minimum setting for this page margin the operating system configured
printer driver supports.

Kind regards, Joost Andrae

Dave,

In addition to these good replies, may I ask if you tried Ctrl-P and

I that case, your problem is with the document and its construction,
not with your printer.

I have tried defining the print range via format and highlighting to no avail.

It may just be that you misunderstand how print ranges work. If you
define a print range anywhere in your document, any material not
included in a print range will not print. So if you define a print
range on one sheet (that's sheet, not page), material on *any* sheet
will not print unless it is included in a print range. Perhaps you
have defined a print range on one sheet where you needed it but
omitted to include material in other sheets that you also want printed.

I have also tried simply selecting a page number range in the print screen.

If some sheets have been excluded by print range(s), no page numbers
corresponding to material on those sheets will appear as available.

I have tried deleting the print range under format, but nothing works.

If you remove all print rages, everything should potentially print, of course.

I trust this helps.

Printing envelopes problem

2019-08-11 Thread Lonny Fry
I am trying to print a 5.75" x 4.375" (exact size) envelope under the "User
Defined” dropdown menu. An error message reads:

The paper size detected by the printer sensor does not match the paper size
selected in software.
If the paper loaded in the printer is the correct size, change the selected
paper size in your software and re-send the print job.
If the paper loaded in the printer is not the correct size, change paper and
resend the print job.”

I have tried several variations of position and size adjustment, but no luck.
The envelope ejects manually so it is feeding correctly, just not printing.
HELP? :knock:

Have you perhaps set a print range on the sheet that does print, so
as to print only some of the information on that sheet and suppress
other parts? If this is not intended, go to Format | Print Ranges > |
Remove to remove it.

Note that if any print range is set, it applies to the entire
spreadsheet, so it will suppress any other sheets unless print ranges
are specifically set on those sheets too. Select the required
material on other sheets and use Format | Print Ranges > | Add in
order to add that material or those sheets to the material to be printed.

Here is a simple way to do this:
o Display one of the other sheets by clicking its tab.
o If the other sheets are consecutive, Shift-click the tab of the
furthest to add all the other sheets to the selection of sheets.

o If they are not consecutive, Ctrl+click sheet tabs to add sheets piecemeal.
o Now click the rectangle at top left of the visible sheet - where
the column and row headers meet - to select all of it. This will -
invisibly - select all of the cells in all of the selected sheets.
o Go to Format | Print Ranges > | Add to add all the other material
to your print requirement.

It has been reported on the OO-Forum that sometimes OO cannot see the printer
after installation; whether this is due to 64 bit printer drivers not seeing
the 32 bit application of OO is not known.

It can help to uninstall the existing printer driver, verify that one has the
latest drivers (check with printer manufacturer's site - don't rely on Windows
to do this) and reinstall them.

A workaround is to export the spreadsheet from OO in PDF format (/File /Export
as PDF) and print the PDF file from whatever PDF viewer is installed on the
computer.

You were right to identify that print ranges could be the poster's
problem, but in the interest of not confusing the masses, may I
please correct this?

If there is no print range defined anywhere in a spreadsheet,
OpenOffice will default to printing everything (not nothing).

And if under "Print range" you see "none", then change it to "Entire sheet".

You have no need to do that if there are no print ranges set on any sheet.

Note that the print range setting defaults to "none" on all sheets
(tabs), so it needs to be changed on all sheets needing to be printed.

Again, that is not so: if there are no print ranges set anywhere,
everything will print.

The confusion arises only if there *is* a print range set somewhere.
The effect of a print range or ranges is to determine that only
material in a range is printed. So setting a print range on one sheet
- perhaps to suppress the printing of some material on that sheet -
will mean that everything on other sheets will no longer be included.
(Users sometimes find this surprising.) If you need a print range
anywhere, you need print ranges on all other sheets that you require
to be printed.

But the default of no print ranges anywhere prints everything and
causes no problems.

If you use OpenOffice tell use from which site you have downloaded it.
When you print doesn’t print anything at all or just a blank page?

What's your evidence for this? Do you see no raised points where you
have spaces? Do you not even see the pilcrow to indicate the end of a
paragraph?

The raised points to indicate individual space characters must be
displayed using some character in the character set: this may be
Unicode U+00B7 "Middle dot". Your seeing this relies on that
character existing in whatever font you are using, of course. If you
are using an obscure font, you may not see anything. For example, it
does not appear in my Wingdings or Webdings fonts.

It may be old-fashioned but I like to see exactly where I am when
typing or revising a document.

You can see where you are by the flashing insertion point - which may
be a little difficult to spot if it coincides with a text boundary.
(And I've a vague notion that it may be less visible than in some
earlier versions of OpenOffice.) But the insertion point always
shows, of course - without your needing to toggle on the display of
non-printing characters.

I trust this helps.

Er, a printer?

It prints documents that has a table with black font text in it, but
it will not print any text using black. I've changed the font colors
options and it prints in other colors.

Just a thought: do you have a tick at Tools | Options.. | OpenOffice
| Accessibility | Options for high-contrast appearance | Use
automatic font colour for screen display? If so, text of other
colours - even white - will show as black (on light backgrounds) in
the editing screen, but will print correctly. But you would probably
notice if that was the case if, as you say, you changed font colours as a test.

Here's a possible workaround. Is this a text (Writer) document? Tick
the option at Tools | Options... | OpenOffice Writer | Print |
Contents | Print text in black. In any case, discovering whether that
works or not may help you diagnose the problem.

Other tests:

o What happens printing from other applications?

o Did you inherit this document from someone else?

o Have you converted this document from another (perhaps proprietary) format?

o What happens if you create a new test document instead?

o What happened with your previous printer?

o Er, have you still got the receipt?!

I trust this helps.

then, you can specify which parts of file you want to print with
checking or unchecking the available check boxes and then save your
settings.
hope that help, God bless you!

2018-04-05 Thread Kyndel Weirich
Hello,
I hope you can help. I’ve been to the online forums and follow directions

I’ve uninstalled and re-installed my printer driver.
I’ve tried to print from the PDF document

I’ve rebooted both the printer and the computer.

Glad that you managed to clean things up.  I occasionally allow my
HP8600 to run a 'clean-the-print head' routine.

If I am not mistaken, the recommendation for inkjet printers is to Not
have it energized until ready to put it into operation; to avoid inkjets
becoming clogged ?

First of all, you should tell us Your Operating System and version and
the OpenOffice version you use.
Secondly it's nice to know which program you have the problem with e.g.
Calc, Writer etc.
Then what do you see when you use Page Preview.
This all helps us to help you.

You only can solve problems by coding if you can replicate the problem
and have identified the cause of the problem.
So the user should first test if he can print envelopes from other applications.
So let him export the file to PDF and see if he is able to print from Acrobat.
Other option is to check if he can print to another printer and he said printing
To his Epson printer worked fine.
My guess is the problem is with the installation of his printer.

The moral is “ Don’t fix what is not broken”

Current solution reported on the OO Forum is that you should disconnect and
uninstall your printer, power off computer and then power on, connecting the
printer so that it is detected and reinstalled.

It is good also to check that you are using the latest printer drivers from the
printer manufacturer's site.

Well, "We" suggest that more than one user has this problem.
So the question is do the others have the same problem even when using
their own devices?
If that's the case then it could be your printer settings especially
when the printer is central maintained.
The only settings OpenOffice that effect colour printing are in File ->
Printer Settings ... Options check that the box "Print text in black is
not set.
Or in Options -> OpenOffice -> Print check that the box "Convert colors

Printing portrait

2017-04-25 Thread Chris Thomas | ShKooP
Hello,

I find that when I print notes in presentation I am unable to achieve good
results when printing in portrait mode.

The image and text is off page to the left and therefore although the full
length of text printed the width is truncated.

I have tried adjusting size of margins but this has no effect.

What am I doing wrong?

Re: Printing multiple sheets on one page

Can I print multiple sheets on one page?

I'm guessing from "sheets" that we are talking about a spreadsheet
document rather than any other type?

Basically no, I think.

The sheets I have take up only the upper quadrant of a page. I would
like to fit four sheets on one page. Can this be done?

Yes.

o One way is to make use of the facility that many printers have to
condense multiple page images to a single printed side. But this will
be restricted to two images per page, or four - two by two, not four
by one - six, nine, and so on. This will reduce the size of each
image to fit the space, so it is likely that you will need to adjust
the size of the data in the spreadsheet to compensate. Go to File |
Printer Settings... | Properties... and see what you find.

o But in any case it is very easy (and much more flexible) to
assemble a copy of whatever material you need to print on a single
sheet of your spreadsheet, either an existing sheet or a new one
created for the purpose. Then you can either select printing only
that sheet or - more easily - mark the material on that sheet as a
print range, so that only that material is printed automatically.

If this is a once-only operation, you can make the data on the
printing sheet simply copies of the data elsewhere. But it is more
sensible to use Edit | Paste Special... (or right-click | Paste
Special..., or Ctrl+Shift+V) instead of ordinary paste to create the
data on the new sheet; then tick Link under Options in the Paste
Special dialogue. This way, the printing sheet will contain
references to your actual working sheets (as formulae) instead of
fixed copies of their values, and the printing sheet will update
automatically as you work on the document.

I trust this helps.
