Re: [users] no emacs keybindings in openoffice
Dear Harold, Thanks for your kind reply. If emacs uses the Alt or Alt Gr key then the simple answer is no because OOo can't use those keys. For a discussion, see http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=70103 That is too bad, becauce I use alt quite a lot in emacs, and find it very useful at that. Won't Word plus emacs bindings run under WINE? Would that save two reboots? Since I use windows so little (once a year at most) I didn't think of this. Of course you're right. I realise this is probably a rarely asked question but I need the Impress part and do not require the other programmes. Thanks in anticipation of your reply Bill Milburn This is actually a frequently asked question. The short answer is no. The reason is that while OOo (OpenOffice.org) appears to the user as different programs (Writer, Calc, Impress, etc.), it is in fact a single program, which performs different but complimentary functions, drawing on the resources of a large common core. During the install process you can select not to install some modules, but this is not recommended, because you will loose some functionality and the saving on disk space is negligible. However, that is not recommended, as it will not save much space and you may lose some function. Unlike Microsoft Office, OpenOffice is a fully integrated office suite, that brings many advantages over the ways things are done in Microsoft Office. The default program is the one that Windows invokes when you double click on a file. You can answer yes or no *separately* for each of the three document types. Whichever is the default program for a type, you can alway open a document using the other by *right* clicking on it, choosing Open with ... and then either picking the program from the list offered or browsing to it in its installation folder (probably c:\program files\...). Daraufhin habe ich also alle Verknüpfungen gelöscht. Sehr aufwendig, da nur einzeln möglich. Warum lassen sich nicht alle gleichzeitig markieren und entfernen? Gibt es eine andere Variante für diese Art der Verknüpfungen, die sich ja täglich ändern? Also alle Verknüpfungen waren entfernt und Tabelle gespeichert. Trotzdem dauerte es ewig, also deutlich länger als unter OOo 2.3.1, bis die Tabelle sich öffnete, weshalb ich die neue Version eben wieder gelöscht habe. This is done via a Wizard. You can now set up a default language which will be used for spell checking if you say nothing else. You can change the default language at any time. You can also change it temporarily for this document. So, for example, if you normally write in French, you would probably set your default language to French. But if you want to write a document in German, just change to German for this document only. The setting will be remembered with the document. New documents will continue to use the default French. You could also have different templates for different languages if you prefer that mechanism. If you want to write multi-lingual documents you can tell OpenOffice to use a different langauge for each paragraph or even for each word using styles. This subject is too complex to for a simple e-mail but is fully documented in the free OpenOffice documentation available from the OpenOffice web site www.openoffice.org. Basically you establish a style for each language and then set (1 or 2 clicks) the appropriate style as necessary. OpenOffice uses the language of the style to do spell checking. If you do this sort of thing a lot you could set up templates containing definitions of the appropriate styles. OpenOffice also makes provision for the use and spell checking of non-Western alphabets such as Urdu, Hebrew, Esperanto etc. and for languages like Hebrew which are written right-to-left. Again all this is fully documented in the free user guides downloadable from the web site. There are also books available for purchase. Of course, all this assumes (a) you have the relevant dictionaries installed and (b) you have a means of entering the appropriate foreign characters - Russian keyboard for example. Sometimes can open, sometimes not - very odd. 2.4.0 3.0M6 open OK, but 3.0M6 is definitely slower in opening. Additionally, the document spacing is different between the two. Example: - page 20 in M6 shows 'Student' thru 'Afstudeer coördinator'. - Page 20 in 2.4.0 'maart t/m mei 2007 literatuurstudie' thru 'Student'. Both running on the same system, both are open at the same time using the same fonts. I'm not sure where the spacing problem comes from. I wonder if the problem on 2.3.1 SO8/9 and 2.4.0 (see below) are related to the fact that the document is basically a 21 page table. I also found that if I select the table in 2.4.0 and give it borders, I get a cpu overload (this is a 2.4Ghz/1GB system). I do not have the same problem with 3.0M6. So it appears to be a problem in the 2.x as you mentioned in your initial reply. My guess would be that he would not encounter the problem if he'd have used frames instead of a 21 page table. [users] Intermittant Right Align problem
Hi all, OOo 2.4.0 on XP Pro SP2+: I'm trying to determine whether this is a bug in OOo Writer or not. If it's unheard of, I'll look into submitting a report. I've received some documents that have manual line breaks (mirrored para mark) at the end of each line. It's a rather long story, but my macros were screwing up so I started working manually to see just what was going on. I'm using spaceDelete at the end of each line to remove the para mark and properly apply the formatting to the paragraphs. In other words I'm removing the individual para marks within the paragraphs, leaving only the last one in tact. Intermittantly, but only when I press the space/delete at the end of a line, the left alignment jumps to right alignment and I have to stop and click the Left Align menu item. Pretty much of an annoyance. It's intermittant, but it will happen during EVERY paragraph, just not to every line. Which line it happens at is unpredictable; it might be ther third line, might be the 12th line. It usually only happens once per paragraph, but not necessarily; it might happen two or three times per paragraph. The length of the paragraphs doesn't seem to matter although a short, one or two line paragraph is seldom a problem. I've also tried switching the space; delete to delete;space and no difference. I can find no pattern so far as to when it will happen. Body text, of course. 1. Is this happening to anyone else? Or is it something on my end? 2. Is it a known bug? 3. Is there a workaround or setting that I may have missed? I don't think so, because of the intermittancy, but ... one never knowsg. Hi, OOo 2.4.0 on XP Pro SP2+: This one is probably my own fault but I haven't done anything knowingly to cause it. I recently switched from 2.3 to 2.4 so I'm not sure whether it ever worked in the 2.4 version I have. Problem: TOC does not include links to the page they reference. Tried: Help, and the LE/ES (or whatever it was) settings and clicking to set ALL. Followed instructions as perfectly as I could; no help, so it would appear I'm missing something. Previous documents created in 2.3 still have the links in the TOCs and the links all work when clicked in 2.4. Google hasn't helped, nor has searching messages on this group. I suspect it's probably my thick head getting in the way, so I need your kind assistance. I removed and reinstalled OOo to no avail, but it now occurs to me those settings might be in a file that's not deleted? 1. HOW do I get the TOC to include links? Please, don't just copy the Help paragraphs here; I've read them over and over without getting the links to work. Layman's terms please? Some of that Help is a little confusing so I'm probably misnterpreting something. I'm not new to Word or to Writer so you needn't assume I'm a complete newbie either. And, these further questions arose from that effort: 2. Is there a way to RESET *everything* in Writer, or even the entire OOo? Remove/reinstall doesn't seem to accomplish that. Either would be OK with me as I still have 2.3 installed and functional. I'm just getting 2.4 set up so don't mind starting over from scratch. Oh, and yes, I removed 2.3 also when I reinstalled 2.4, just in case there was something clnflicting. Any assistance/advice you could provide would be much appreciated. -- Regards, Twayne - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [users] Text file import to Calc
Hi Victor, If you change the extension to CSV, you'll get a text import dialogue when you open the file ('file / open' or drag and drop). Click the 'Fixed Width' radio button, then set the columns by clicking on the ruler. tc Victor Chapman wrote: I have a text file that is columnized (is that a word!) by spaces not commas or tabs. How do I import this file into calc (or base). This may vary with operating system (which you have kept a secret). In my version 2.4.0 for Windows XP, there are two techniques which work. Either: o Right-click the file and select Open With | scalc (but not OpenOffice.org 2.4, which will open the file in Writer). This appears to work whether the file's extension is .txt or .csv. o Open the file in a plain text editor and copy and paste the material into a Calc spreadsheet. In either case, this brings up the Text Import dialogue. Under Separator options | Separated by, tick at least space and possibly Merge delimiters. I think the simplest way to get the data into Base is first to put it into Calc, as above. Then: o Copy the region of the spreadsheet containing the data. o In Base, select Tables in the left panel. o Use Edit | Paste (or right-click | Paste in the Tables panel) and follow the Copy table dialogue to create a new table with your imported data or to append the data to an existing table. Even while typing in this document (see attachment) the program works very very unstable and turns out to be very unreliable. To check the validity of my claim, I have just gone to my wife's Vista based notebook, checked that the OOo 2.3.1 installation files did not exist and uninstalled it without any errors or problem. I then installed OOo 2.4.0, which completed perfectly. subsequently deleting/erasing the installation files and uninstalled OOo 2.4.0 Both uninstall processes worked perfectly without the need for the original installation files. [users] style organizer in separate window?
Perhaps my memory is faulty, but I thought *sure* that OO.o writer used to have a way to bring up the style organizer in a separate window. Did it? I cannot find a way to do this at this time -- whenever I bring it up, it always shows up as a sort of sidebar to the main text window. I can minimize is to that it takes up nearly no room at all, but if I want to use it, it uses up maybe 2 of the width of the window. (Give or take, depending on how I resize it, but 2 is about the minimum necessary.) I looked in the help menu, but it just told me how to start the style organizer such that it comes up in that same fashion.
