Hi Web,

Firts:

for my desktop of Ubuntu 9.10.

Ubuntu 9.10 has OpenOffice 3.1 installed as default, it's likely that
you are using some other version.

The best way to add more recent versions of OpenOffice to your Ubuntu
install is using something called PPA.

PPAs are software sources that provide newer versions of some programs
that the ones officially supported. They will integrate completely in
Ubuntu and will be updated with the rest of the system.

There are usually more than one PPA per program, some provide the
lastest released versions, other can provide you with betas or even
night-builds (the version where the developers are working, usually
quite buggy).

Anyway, check this:

https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive/ppa

This will provide you the latest released version of OpenOffice only one
or two weeks after release. It will only work with Ubuntu 9.04, if you
are using some other version, please tell us.

One more thing:

I need some Gnome stuff
for now and if I can find the stuff in KDE

You can run Gnome programs in KDE and KDE stuff in gnome just right.
They will look somewhat different but they will run just fine.

Hope that it helps,

Javier.

Sorry, I do have 9.10 installed and it had 3.0.1 as its version.

Sorry, I do have 9.10 installed - like I said in original message.

I cannot get it to authorize, but it still will download the
updates from ppa.launchpad.net/main (or universe)

If you have any other archive sites for the Synaptic Package Manager
for Ubuntu 9.10/Jaunty let me know. That is for other software packages
that may be of use.

Thanks

I have checked it on mine and it's version 3.1.1.

It's also what the official package site says:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/en/karmic/openoffice.org-writer

Are you really sure that you are running 9.10?.

Keep in mind that it's going to be released tomorrow, if you are running
it now, it must be an RC or a beta.

You can check your Ubuntu version on System-About Ubuntu or in the
console typing:

$cat /etc/lsb-release

If you really have 9.10 and openoffice 3.0.1 then something is wrong
with your package configuration.

Well, OOo kept on telling me 3.0.1 till I updated it via
the other source for the PPA.

Will look into it later.

When did you download version 9.10?
I have had mine for a few months now
and it came with 3.0.1, since 3.1.1 did not come
out before I installed Ubuntu 9.10

Thanks for the help.

Well we are both wrong.
Ubuntu 9.10 is not even out yet. One day to go???
I thought I had 9.10, but I did not. It is 9.04,
but I will get 9.10 as soon as it comes out.
Then there is the process of updating 9.04 to 9.10.

If you are new with Linux, it'll be wise to wait one or two months until
the glitches that have slipped the Beta phase are resolved.

There are going to be a couple of problems for sure. It's quite like
waiting for the SP1 in a windows OS but faster.

BTW the Beta has been quite nice for me, but for a minor solved problem
with old ATI boards.

Hi,

Better not use that script. Use your package manager instead.

I was trying to install the latest DEB version of OOo, but keep getting

I keep getting a deselecting message for each .deb package when I run the
update shell script using the sudo sh . . . script command. on that
file.
It just lists the names of the .deb packages/files in the folder saying the
deselecting message for each file. I use the sudo that is asked for to
run
the script, but it will not get it working.

Ubuntu runs a 3.0.1 version as a default, but I do not want to wait for
someone
to add an update in the update system or some add on in the Synaptic
Package Manager.

I use Gnome, currently, for my desktop of Ubuntu 9.10. For now I will
not go
to KDE, but maybe later. So do not tell me to switch. I need some Gnome
stuff
for now and if I can find the stuff in KDE (later when I have a lot of
time on my hands)
then I will look into switching.

I may look into a different version of Linux in a few months, after I
finish some of
my projects and can move my data off the Linux-box so I can change out
to something else.

So can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
