[users] open office problem

2008-09-24 Thread Lynne Ziegelbauer
I have a MacBook with Mac OS X 10.5. I downloaded openoffice about a month
ago. I tried to open it today and I get a pop up saying operation timed out.
I tried to reinstall it and it's still saying the same thing. Now I have two
Icons on my desktop for OpenOffice and I can't get rid of them. Everytime I
try and delete them it says I have to Eject them, but there is nothing to
eject. Can you give me any ideas to get rid of these 2 and get them off of my
computer because they are now taking up space and they don't even work.
Thank you,
Lynne Ziegelbauer

Hello Lynne,

There are some issues with Leopard and X11/OpenOffice.org.
Previous updates of Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.x) caused X11 to 'time out', the
last update (no.5) even seems to break up the use of X11 altogether, and
also poses problems with PDF files...

I propose that you install the Release Candidate 2 of the Aqua version of
OpenOffice.org. That version doesn't need the X11 windowing utility.
You can download the RC2 from GoodDay:
http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/3.0.0rc2/
Which file to chose?
Do you have an Intel or a PowerPC Mac?
You download the US English version
(OOo_3.0.0rc2_MacOSXIntel_install.dmg or ...PPC_install.dmg - so the US
English version comes without the language specification in the filename),
or the language version of you choice (install_xx.dmg)
Download, doubleclick to open the dmg, then drag the program to your
applications folder.
You can drag the OOo icon from the Applications folder (in Finder) to your
Dock for easy access.

The final testedapproved version of OOo 3.0.0 Aqua for Mac will be ready in
a few weeks.
The RC probably still has some bugs, so it's advisable to save you work
regularly.

To get rid of the OOo 2.4 dmg or installation files that you have on your
desktop, drag them to the trash (the bin will turn into an arrow, indicating
that you 'eject' something, like what happens if you 'eject' a USB drive or
external harddisk).

Hello,

Since you uninstalled OpenOffice.org, I don't see how it could interfere
with the memory usage of your computer. As for the available disk space, I
suppose you can easily verify this (I don't know how, I don't use Windows,
as I suppose you are doing). You may throw away the OOo files if you don't
intend to use them (Why? is something the people from OOo always like to
know...)

If this doesn't clarify your problem, please be more specific about your
computr, Ooperating System, etc.

The only thing that springs to mind is that your disk is too full
because after uninstalling OpenOffice you did not delete the installer
file (which you downloaded) and the folders/files into which it unpacked
itself during the installation procedure. The Remove part of Windows
Add/Remove Software does exactly that. It removes installed software. It
does *not* remove the software that did the installing - it can't
because it doesn't know where that software is or even if it's still on
the computer.

You can check how full your disk is by going to My Computer, *right*
clicking on the disk's icon and choosing Properties. You will see a pie
chart showing how much of the disk is in use and how much is free. If
the disk is nearly full, delete the files folders I mentioned above
and then run the Disk Cleanup program by clicking the button next to the
pie chart.

RE: [users] Open Office problem in Kubuntu Feisty

2007-09-10 Thread Leach, William R
I am not in a position to give you specific help, unfortunately. But I
can tell you the nature of the problem. You have a device defined in
your xf86config file that you do not have on your computer (probably one
of the drawing tablets).

I believe that just commenting out the device will fix the problem.
The real problem is more complex of course since there should be nothing
wrong with having devices defined in the X config file that you don't
have on the computer.

I'm sorry that I can't be more specific but it has been too long since I
ran into the problem and just don't remember more about it.

2007-09-09 Thread Gordon Chan
Hello there,
I have a problem when I am trying to fire up open office by either clicking
the button on menu, or from a shell (ooffice -writer).

The Open Office splash screen would appear, but then nothing would happen
afterwards. I have provided here the log when I tried to start Open Office
from the command line and hope that any of you could help.

Thanks.

Best regards,
Gordon

Is this a new installation? or a new problem arising in a previous
installation? What version of OpenOffice are you using?

Re: [users] Open office problem

2007-03-27 Thread Paul

Hi,

My husband has just bought a new laptop and we still haven't been able to
get it connected to the internet. It has Microsoft Vista. I have Microsoft
XP and have windows 2003. We can't download my 2003 software on his new
laptop. We have bought the open office suite for my husband's computer and
it has been successfully downloaded onto the laptop.

So you have one laptop that you can't get connected and another that
you can get connected?

We have written a document, in writer, and need to send it via the internet
to a user who only has Microsoft Word. She cannot open our document in Word
as it doesn't recognize Open office. If open office is compatible with
Microsoft office, why is this happening, and is there anything to be done
about it?

You need to save the document as MS file format. Alternatively you
could use the menu option of file send document as MS word. This
will send the document in a format that can be read by MS Office
users.

If the answer to the last question is no, how do we get our money back as it
says in the ad, money back if not satisfied.?

Regards Marion and Roger Llewellyn Smith

You can of course ask for your money back however you won't be getting
any from people on this list. If you want your money back you need to
go back to the people that you paid the money to in the first place.

Just for the record, OpenOffice is freely downloadable from here :
www.openoffice.org. It is open source and this list serves to answer
questions for people that have downloaded this product. It sounds like
you paid to obtain OpenOffice (which is perfectly legal) - but again,
you need to go back to the people that you paid the money to if you
want a refund.

to a user who only has Microsoft Word. She cannot open our document in
Word
as it doesn't recognize Open office. If open office is compatible with
Microsoft office, why is this happening, and is there anything to be done
about it?

If the answer to the last question is no, how do we get our money back as
it
says in the ad, money back if not satisfied.?

Regards Marion and Roger Llewellyn Smith

1. Money back if not satisfied with what? The laptop? OpenOffice.org?
OpenOffice.org is usually free, so there should
not be any money to get back. If someone sold OpenOffice.org to you, which
is not illegal to do, I guess you should talk to them.

2. OpenOffice.org Writer is compatible with the MS Word doc
format among other formats (if the document is not too complex, and the Word
VB macros won't work). However MS Word is NOT compatible at all
with the international standard OpenDocument, that OpenOffice.org use.
This means that you have to save your document in the Word doc format if a
Word user is supposed to be able to open and edit the document. You can do
that in a few different ways. There is a way to make OpenOffice.org to save
in doc format as default, look at Tools-Options-OpenOffice.org Writer, I
think you will find it there, somewhere. Another way to do it is File-Save
As…-Select the format you wish to save in (in this case MS Word 97/2000/XP
or something like that.

Here are a few solutions for your problem so the MS Word user can read your
documents:

1. Save your documents in the MS Word doc format, as described above. The
document will probably not look exactly like the original you created, but
it will be close, at least for simple documents.

2. If the user is not supposed to edit the document, export it as PDF
instead. There is also an Export and send email option somewhere. Then the
document will look exactly as you created it, at least it always does for
me. The MS Word user then needs software for reading PDF files. Adobe Reader
is free and there are more free PDF readers out there as well.

3. Ask the user if downloading OpenOffice.org is an option for him/her. It's
free so it won't cost anything. However it will take quite a few hours to
download if the user has a dial-up connection, but who has these days?

4. There are a few more office suites and word processors out there (free,
some of them Open Source) that supports the international OpenDocument
format. Take a look at
herehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_applications_supporting_OpenDocument#Word_processorsfor
a list of word processors that supports OpenDocument more or less.
Maybe
there is something that the user can download to be able to handle your
documents.

5. There are also free converters and filters out there for conversion from
OpenDocument to MS Word doc format, that the user could download to be able
to convert your documents and then edit them with word.

1) The default format for OpenOffice is OpenDocument (ODT etc). This is
an international ISO standard, which MS Word is unable to handle. This
means you have to save the file in Word format, for the other person to
read. Another option is to click on File Send Email as Microsoft
Word. Another possibility is to export the document as a PDF file.
Since OpenOffice is a free download, you might even suggest your friend
install it.

2) While some people sell CDs of OpenOffice, it is available for free
download from www.openoffice.org. If you want your money back, you have
to contact whoever you bought the CD from.

If so can you work on fixing that, and I know it wouldn't be an immediate

program I can use until this matter is fixed. I am loyal to Open Office, I

You could try the tools listed at http://mdbtools.sf.net to convert the

Johnny, if you are running a version of X11 earlier than 1.1.3, you

I don't believe this will help if you are already running 1.1.3.

There should be a file called Common.xcu in your system - you need to
check that it contains some text - if it does not the remove the file
and restarting OpenOffice.org should solve your problem. This file is
usually found in C:\WHere OOo is
installed\OpenOffice.org1.1.x\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\Common.xcu
