RE: [VFB] Finding hooks and backing for Fly boxes

2010-09-23 Thread Jim Forshey
Anessa started tying when she was about 8, but rode on my shoulders when I
when fly-fishing at a very young age (around 2). (The shoulder fly-fishing
was probably not the smartest thing, but we each enjoyed it.)

Every so often Anessa has friends over that she tries to teach how to tie.
It is fun to watch a bunch of 12-15 year old girls try to tie. She is now
planning to start teaching her friends how to Fly-fish.

Your granddaughters will enjoy it a lot if you give them a lot of freedom.

Jim,

Great to hear you and your daughter are enjoying tying

flies together. Thanks for sharing with us. I'm thinking about getting a
couple of my granddaughters started this winter.

I am not looking for low quality hooks, I just want to buy some good quality

In regards to storing, sometimes we make a large amount, more than we would

look back to what she did and what phase she was in, at one time she only
did purple. It currently brings back memories for me when I look at them (I
think our oldest are from 2007, she would have been 10 then). I use to use a
box by Scientific Anglers, I use to find them on sale now and then for
around $10 to $20. Now they are running $39.95 plus 6 inserts at $15.95
each, That is way to much for me. I am looking to make some storage boxes
using some 1 x 12 x 12 slide cases.

I always look for the swaps, I do not know how I missed the hook-swap. I
also try and watch for the fly swap, but by the time I getting to reading my
e-mails it always look like it is full. I am retiring on 11/30, hopefully
after that I can read my e-mails on a timely basis and can join in some
swaps.

I never been to a Sportsman's warehouse, I will need to find one.

Thank you for the suggestions of the caring boxes, a friend dropped by about
30 tin boxes the local store gave him, so I am set there for a while.

Thank you for the help and great ideas.

Re: [VFB] Finding hooks and backing for Fly boxes

2010-09-22 Thread Chuck Alexander
I buy those plastic boxes that have about 15 compartments from Hobby Lobby
for $1.99 each. And I have three of them, labeled "big hooks", Dry fly
hooks" and "wet fly hooks". Then, I label each compartment with its
particular size hooks. Works (cheaply) for me, Chuck

I am interjecting a thought here to start a thread in the middle of the
discussion about hooks and hook prices, etc. Forgive me. Here is my
question:

How do you-all manage hook storage? I am convinced that most of you
have at least as many hook styles and sizes as I do. I really like the
large boxes with 12 or 15 separate compartments. Spirit River sells
them specifically for hooks... I take the label from the hook packages
and glue them to the side of each compartment. It's a good system, and
identifies each style and size correctly. However, there is a lot of
wasted space in these big boxes unless you buy enough hooks to fill the
compartments. I have them stacked up and handy near my vise. Do you
label these boxes for dry fly hooks, wets, streamers, etc.?
I have waited a while to bring this subject up, but this is as good a
time as any.
Thanks for "listening". I will be waiting for all your good ideas.

Hi Jim;

Here are a couple of hook ideas:

http://stores.ebay.com/Har-Lee-Rod/MUSTAD-HOOK-SALE-/_i.html?_fsub=1624363018&_sid=15998378&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322

first is Harleerod, selling Mustad classic hook styles, can be had for
as little as $0.99 per 500 plus shipping.

http://stores.ebay.com/Togens-Fly-Shop/Hooks-/_i.html?_fsub=4996021&_sid=302050183&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322

Second, Togens fly shop has hooks in contemproary styles for as little
as $7.50 per hundred plus shipping.

For fly storage, a lot of people have been making thier own fly boxes
from inexpensive plastic boxes and craft foam.

Here's one example:
http://dharmaofthedrift.blogspot.com/2010/08/my-flats-fly-box-for-under-five-bucks.html

Another: http://ultralightflyfishing.yuku.com/topic/2825

Hope this helps;

Hi

I would like to thank all of you for your e-mails and suggestions, most
I
would have never thought of.

To answer some of the questions;

"Off the Hook Fly Shop" is a great shop with a good owner. I was hoping
to
buy maybe 50 to 100 hooks at a time. When we get to tying we could go
thought that many hooks in a day. Some of our tying look good and some
of
them look like Andy Warhol was giving us tying direction, but we have
fun
and that is what matters.

The backing you suggested I am sure going to look into.

I am not looking for low quality hooks, I just want to buy some good
quality
hooks in a larger amount, hopefully making them cost a little less
each.

In regards to storing, sometimes we make a large amount, more than we
would
even use, I like to store the extra away hoping when she get older she
can
look back to what she did and what phase she was in, at one time she
only
did purple. It currently brings back memories for me when I look at
them (I
think our oldest are from 2007, she would have been 10 then). I use to
use a
box by Scientific Anglers, I use to find them on sale now and then for
around $10 to $20. Now they are running $39.95 plus 6 inserts at
$15.95
each, That is way to much for me. I am looking to make some storage
boxes
using some 1 x 12 x 12 slide cases.

I always look for the swaps, I do not know how I missed the hook-swap.
I
also try and watch for the fly swap, but by the time I getting to
reading my
e-mails it always look like it is full. I am retiring on 11/30,
hopefully
after that I can read my e-mails on a timely basis and can join in
some
swaps.

I never been to a Sportsman's warehouse, I will need to find one.

Thank you for the suggestions of the caring boxes, a friend dropped by
about
30 tin boxes the local store gave him, so I am set there for a while.

Thank you for the help and great ideas.

Re: [VFB] Finding hooks and backing for Fly boxes

2010-09-21 Thread Don Ordes

Larry,
'Problem' is that nowadays the scope of hook styles goes way beyond sizes.
(I'm not complainin'.)
There are so many manufacturers, styles, metals, colors, specialized shapes,
custom bends,
that it's just impossible to keep track of them, at least, be well
organized.

I try to divide salt, fresh, giant fly hooks first.
Then I separate fresh into long streamer, salmon irons, and custom hooks.
Then I separate fresh into general wet or dry.
Then I separate those in hook styles in those catagories.
Then I separate those into sizes.
Same for the saltwater- offshore, inshore, long shank, short shank, popper,
giant, etc.

I get lost halfway through looking and Buggs reminds me the rest of the way,
unless he's been...you know.

you could use EPP foam (get it from a hobby store (for building radio-
controlled aircraft. So movers use it for packing expensive chandeliers
and the likes. It is very flexible, yet durable.

Re: [VFB] Finding hooks and backing for Fly boxes- and a question...

2010-09-16 Thread Don Ordes
Jim,
1. There was just a hook-swap that you could have joined and gotten a
long-term supply of your fav. hooks very cheap.

2. Depending on whether you are just storing flies or want to use the fly box
for fishing, there are lots of choices. For boxes that I just store flies in,
I use thin foam on one side and a flat magnet sheet on the other. When you
visit Sportsman's warehouse, pick up a bunch of their business cards- thy are
printed on this magent sheet material, and in a clear box, they advertise for
them. They don't have a ton of stick, but then you are just sorting and
storing flies.

For fishing boxes that I am repeatedly removing and replacing flies in, I like
the stick-on ripple-foam pads. I can cut to fit, make strips, do just a
portion coupled with stronger magnet sheets than can be gotten in craft stores.
For most use, tho, I like the small Cliff-boxes- 'Day-trippers' I think
they're called. They hold a variety of flies on foam strips and also have the
magnet for midges. They also open one-handed, a nice touch.

Who knows when they first came out with the aluminum fly boxes that had the
fine springs covered by a metal plate for inserting hooks?

Hi Jim;

I don't think I quite understand what your looking for, inexpensive
hooks???

Again for "storing" do you mean storing the hooks prior to use for
tying or storage for displaying flies??

Re: [VFB] Finding hooks and backing for Fly boxes

2010-09-16 Thread Wes Wada
Hello Jim,

Your best bet to locate hooks would be to visit the fly fishing shop in your
town.

Off the Hook Fly Shop
1353 Broadway
Placerville, CA 95667-5901
(530) 626-5041

They would be able to get you the proper hooks for the types of flies you
are interested in tying.

As far as backing for homemade flyboxes...
1. the rubbery nubby material used in RVs to keep items from sliding around
in shelves
2. high density polyester batting sold in rolls at fabric shops -- can be
purchased in 1/2" thicknesses.
3. various types of foam similar to that used in exercise mats

Sure other VFB members can suggest additional fly box backing materials for
homemade boxes.

Good luck on your search,

Wes Wada
Bend, Oregon
