This is not a very good observation, in my opinion. People are not
replicating Rocketboom because it's easy to do. Even if you think
it is easy. Its much easier to do something else.

I think the reason why it's imitated is because the end result/the
format resonates with a lot of different kinds of people. This is not
what I anticipated but it's just what I am observing.

I've been watching the German show (even though I dont understand
it), and I like it.

Re: [videoblogging] compression streaming settings in fcp

2005-11-29 Thread Jen Simmons
You actually are not going to make the video for streaming -- you want to create it for progressive download.

Streaming technology will not work with FireANT, video ipod, etc. Streaming works by loading only a few frames into the viewer's computer, letting them watch those frames, and then clearly them from the memory right away. The viewer can't save the film. It streams right through the machine, like a creek... where progressive download is like a water bucket. Which do you want to drink from??

Streaming is great for live events -- if you want people to watch your speech while you are giving it, live, you can't do progressive download. (what, save the whole film, compress it and have people download it before the event is over??? You could only do that with a time machine.) Also, to do streaming, you have to have a server that is configured properly to serve up the files -- which is a whole thinga-ma-thing.

Here's an example of movie that streams --
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/specialeventoct05/
See how the controls are different?? (oh, wait, in QT7 the controls look the same... well, it behaves differently. You can jump ahead in the film very easily, but you have to wait for the streaming to catch up. You can't rewind or go forward frame by frame... that's because the whole thing is never in your machine.)

Anyway, to answer your question:

I would like to set it for internet streaming, but, my question is, which option should I choose:

a) fast start
b) fast start compressed header
c) hinted streaming

Fast start turns on the progressive part of progressive download, letting people watch the film while it's still downloading it. Without this turned on, the viewer looks at the blue Q waiting waiting waiting (wondering if it's broken or not) until the whole file it downloaded, then they can watch it. (Yuk). If you click fast start they can watch it right away.

Fast start compressed header squishes the very beginning of the movie, so that it loads even faster and makes it more likely that the movie will start playing right away. This means the quality of the beginning will be lower. It's a trade-off of quality for speed. I think this may not be so necessary anymore now that internet connections are faster and compression is so much better than it use to be, but it's something to play with and make a personal choice about.

So either a or b works. Don't do c.

[videoblogging] Anthology Film Archives Vlogfest Tomorrow Night

2005-11-29 Thread Lynn Lane
Okay. So the name of the show isn't really Vlogfest, but in reality
that's what it is. True there were no submissions, no deadlines, no
entry fees but there was some solid curatorial action in place (self-
promo hereI curated this show) so that makes it a Vlogfest to me.
If you don't like it, lump it...haha. Anyway, all kidding aside. If
you are in the NYC area, don't miss out tomorrow night. Who knows,
you may have even ended up in the show. The event will be held at the
Anthology Film Archives on 2nd Avenue at 2nd Street and the show
starts at 6:00 pm. I'm sure that Ryanne Hodson will come on here and
give more information. I have to say, it will be a treat for all in

[videoblogging] Re: Notices when someone posts a comment on your vlog.

2005-11-29 Thread Bill Streeter
Randolfe I've commented on your blogs a few times but I do it on
your blog rather than on Blip. I enjoy comments too but really most
people don't bother. I average less than 1 comment per 500 views.
Speaking for my self, I only comment if something really moves me.
It's my way of saying thanks because it's a really powerful and
great thing to make another human being feel something and it's
especially tricky to do it remotely thru this medium. But it's a
rare and beautiful thing when it happens.

I've posted comments on vlogs and never heard from them again.
Then I have gone back and discovered the person who did the vlog

I must say that I am becoming a real fan of Blip TV. They seem to
really have a concept of what we are all about. I've met some of
those involved at Node 101 and was also impressed.

That doesn't mean I'm not going to stop asking hard
questions..like how do they determine the most watched vlogs?
What time does the cycle begin and when does it end?

No criticism here. But if they begin at midnight and end at
midnight and you post some fabulous vlog at ten p.m., you really
just aren't in the running. Those interested in statistics and who
feel vlogging is a type of show business competition want to know
the answers to these questions.

I'm just happy that there really are people genuinely interested
in this new form of communication.I'm happy that they are working to

Definitely wrong. People check back into the recent archives because
of the thumbnails below. There is also an archive page which has
thumbnails for every rocketboom... which is well over 200 episodes.

But, I think as anyone accumulates the amount of content that
Rocketboom has amassed, the liklihood that anyone would try to view
*all* the archives decreases... its just too daunting a task. Hence,
the paradigm of Search.

[videoblogging] Rotary Vlogging demo

2005-11-29 Thread Jay
Hi to all
Just did a quick 20 minute presentation about Vlogging to the Rotary in small
town
America (Two Harbors , MN). We have a wide range of age groups and I was not
sure how
receptive people would be. The presentation went quite well I showed slice of
the
vlogging life turned them onto freevlog and blip tv. Showed off a video Ipod.
It is
amazing how people in the general public are not aware of what the potential is
out there.
I think it is up to us to show these people what they can do. Make a
connection with a
group in your town and share what you know.

Thanks to Josh Leo- Film AnthologyArchive Which I edited down to 15min.
Andrew Baron from Rocketboom for his help on the new web site.
www.superioradventurestv.com
Ryanne Hudson for replying to my email: Did you go through all the steps on
freevlog.org
I did after she mentioned it.
Chuck Olsen for his class on Vlogging through the Minnesota Film Board
And all those great Vloggers out there keep Vlogging

Still some tweaking to do on the new site check it out.

Yeah I agree with Josh, besides that's kinda the point of
aggregators. You can subscribe to the video blogs you want and when
you view them through an aggregator like FireAnt the web design
becomes much less important. As far as the network goes, we have a
network, its a social network, which is much more interesting and
natural than an old school 20th Century TV network contrived
primarily to capture the greatest numbers of viewers for advertisers.

Hmm, totally good points, and I totally hear you - AND Agree!

BUT, having said that, there is a reason why Grandma and Granpa don't
get online, and thats because
every interface is so daunting... and if your layout is different from
mine - we have a different interface...
thus, in the interest of driving people away from mind-programming
networks, and luring them to a more independent - people powered -
network, I think that a universal layout is needed

however, that doesn't mean that we all cant retain our unique
designs... what about if a bunch of the programming gurus got together,
and made a plugin that would take any blog you were viewing, and throw
it into an interface that looked like a tv... with channels

but... er... I guess that's what Fireant is all about...
hmmm...

well just some random thoughts,...
thanks

Definitely wrong. People check back into the recent archives because
of the thumbnails below. There is also an archive page which has
thumbnails for every rocketboom... which is well over 200 episodes.

I actually tried to locate an old episode at one point, but gave up. Since
I couldn't remember which shirt Amanda was wearing in that particular

Back to the point though...
Rocketboom uses MovableType, which provides excellent control over the
template design.
You will have to learn a little bit of code beyond HTML to do what you
want, but its pretty easy to get the hang of and very well documented.

Funny, well, if you knew of any keywords for any of the information
that you were looking for, you could always type the words into the
search form. It works perfectly for me. I could do a bit with
desigtning up the results, granted. Also, you can always hover your
mouse over the images to get all of the details of each post.

Or you can click on the view 2, to see the archives listed out with
all of the metadata in ascending order.

I have found that Google actually works best for me personally. I
don't like using Google plugins to search sites, but when I go to
Google and type rocketboom and then enter any of the key words I'm
looking for, it almost always produces the particular entry.

[videoblogging] random thoughts about vlogging and open media in 2006

2005-11-29 Thread Michael Meiser

I don't normally post apple rumors, nor follow them (well, i guess I did with the video ipod), but this might tell you a little bit about what 2006 has in store for video blogging.http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0511macmini2.htmlI don't necessarily believe any of the details from think secret, but I agree with the direction. The basic premise is this. Apple will release a mac mini with intel processor, larger hard drive, the option for a remote which works with their Front Row media center software and has DVR features. This will fully transition the mac mini into the living room as a media center. It would essentially finish what Apple started with the video ipod and video podcasting and selling tv shows in the Apple Store.Basically, what Apple is doing is building a media center, but they're not just building the hardware, they have to make sure it has content otherwise it's an unfulfilled promise. And Apple is not known for delivering empty promises. This is according to Steve Jobs why Apple didn't release the video ipod earlier.  So, where do video blogs fit in? Well, we're part of the leverage. Apple is including us in this strategy to send a clear message to the incumbent content industry... if you don't come to the platform we're going to bring the platform to you. With a miniscule content deal with CBS for a couple shows Apple didn't have enough content to promote it's platform. Video blogging and podcasting were the final piece to the puzzle. With this strategy apple now has:a) an ever increasing amount of video blog / rss video feed content. The latest including current TV, G4 Tech TV, and CBS I believe made an announcement... and of course the thousands of us too. :)b) music videos, a couple prime-time TV shows, potentially some pixar related content in their a'la'carte media storec) Tivo-like DVR capabilities that make fair use of media bringing any TV content onto the Mac platformAnyway, that should be "enough" functionality for apple to successfully launch their platform and pull (aka. incentive) traditional media companies in joining the mix.  Anyway, Apple is driving the innovation on that front with technology because the incumbent content owners are the dinosaurs that refuse to enter the new digital age.  However, on OUR front it is content that is driving the innovation, from blip.tv, to mefeedia, to FireAnt and dozens upon dozens of others.Basically, what we as vloggers are doing is getting more opportunity because because the incumbent media are staying out of it. Where there is strife, there is opportunity as the saying goes. However whereas apple is trying to promote it's mac "platform" we're trying to build communications systems. You can see this clearly in the way Apple is treating vlogs as more broadcast media with a lack of meta-data in itunes, and permalinks or comment links... and in how they're bringing vlogs to the the TV as if they're a passive experience. And you'll see this theme more as I continue to write. On a side note, I've seen a lot of DVR capability devices, (I think one was from sony) that would record your shows and let you watch them from a wifi connected tablet like device from anywhere by sending the digitized versions over the web.All this is to say if 2005 was about developing trusted source and mechanisms for bubbling up media, 2006 is going to be about the manifestation of video blogging into the real world through hardware... getting that media out of the box. The Akimbo and iPod are the first manifestations of things to come. A certain sort of validation for what we've accomplished so far.Specifically, I'm pushing and have been for some time the development of portable media devices that are a) wifi connected and b) have built in firmware enabled RSS aggregators that do video and audio (latter images and who knows what).  These devices will be similar to the PSP in hardware design, basically like your iRiver, RCA Lyra or other portable media players with the addition of wifi connectivity and RSS aggregation. They'll have 20-80 gig hard drives and will only need to connect to your desktop computer for configurations such as wifi or to take media off the device and move it onto the computer.  They won't and don't need to be "always on" they'll just connect automatically through open or trusted wifi ports. Most will plug into TV's or other external displays. I call this "hub-less portable media" as a counter point to apple's "digital hub" strategy that makes the desktop machine the center of the network. In this system content goes directly from it's source on the web to the portable media device. At some point I hope these media devices and the media on them will get as ubiquitous as cell phones. For example I fully expect in the next few years to be walking down the street and have my media player device beep and pop it open to find a new video posted just minutes earlier from my favorite vlogger. It's a grand vision, but I'm getting a head of myself. If

I don't have to be "blown away" by a vlog. If
it is really enjoyable and/or has some unique interesting quality, even if I can
see someone was trying very hard to accomplish something, I feel a few minutes
of "free" entertainment deserves some words of thanks.

Like you, I realize how few people comment.
For that reason, I comment as often as I feel I have something valid to
say. I do resist negative comments in most cases but there are
exceptions.

Maybe, Blip or someone should be able to "link
comments" the way Amazon has a link that says 'See all the reviews this person
has done".

You just added another reason for listing links to
all vlogs shown at the Archives. I usually have seen many of those chosen

Even a "guy in the middle of the country" (I love

Unless he were Santa Claus, he could sit on his chair, and respond to children sending him video requests (like Sen.Edwards). Now there's anIDEA for content. Only after Christmas I think the audience would dramatically diminish --one would have torefocus maybe on the antics of Santa's helpers, orthe reindeer...:-).

Without the pretty face to watch reading the news, it'd be better
served as a podcast. Some of these news vlogs don't even show
anything else.

No matter the attractiveness, it gets a little old watching someone

my friend built a computer that grabbed video from feeds and let him
watch them on his TV.
he used an interface called SAGE TV.

building one takes a geek.
the problem is that no commecila manufactorer is brave enough to build
one for mass consumption. The fear is that people will subscribe to
feeds with commercial content.
I really wonder if Tivo will allow you to subscribe to any availble feed.
itll probably be more like Akimbo where you can subscribe to feeds
that they curate.

the mac mini/Front Row combo is really interesting.
seems pretty open and exciting.

Does MythTV now have an aggregator that accepts RSS 2.0 feeds with

MythTV and the world of videoblogging.

[videoblogging] New PSP firmware has an RSS podcast aggregator built in!

2005-11-29 Thread Michael Meiser

Speak of the devil. Sony just came out with a PSP firmware update that includes and RSS aggregator built in. http://www.russellbeattie.com/notebook/1008705.htmlTwo things. It only does mp3 and AAC audio, and it doesn't actually download the files, it just streams them over the PSP's wifi. It probably doesn't download the files do to the fact that they don't have to much built in memory in the PSP.  However, moving the aggregator onto the PSP and using the wifi to access the media directly from the PSP is a HUGE first step in the right direction. Now's definitely the time to blog and talk the hell out of the issue. The PSP needs to retail all the metadata and post info from the RSS and make it readable, preferably support basic html.  THen of course they need to support mpeg video and actually cache the media on the PSP so it can be viewed when the PSP is off line.BTW, sorry about following up on my on very long post, but this is a big deal, one I've been waiting for and talking about, for a very long time. I proposed just this sort of functionality for the PSP several months back in several blog posts. I didn't expect it would start to happen this quick.Peace,-Mike of mmeiser.com/blogOn Nov 29, 2005, at 1:07 PM, Michael Meiser wrote: I don't normally post apple rumors, nor follow them (well, i guess I did with the video ipod), but this might tell you a little bit about what 2006 has in store for video blogging.http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0511macmini2.htmlI don't necessarily believe any of the details from think secret, but I agree with the direction. A certain sort of validation for what we've accomplished so far.Specifically, I'm pushing and have been for some time the development of portable media devices that are a) wifi connected and b) have

This is exactly what I think (what Eric said). It's like with books or
movies. I don't really like the most popular movies or books. As a rule
I find that, if I go by what some critics say, I find better
books/movies (closer to my taste, generally) ... a good filter. The
ideal is someone I know who has similar taste and watches lots of
movies or reads lots of books ... these are the recommendations that
are most accurate ...

Then we get to the amazon thing, and I'm not sure what you call that,
but it is pretty effective too ... people who liked this vlog also
liked xxx ... my understanding is these sorts of algorithms only work
with lots of people rating lots of vlogs, but that's another sort of
option

... RichardOn 11/27/05, Eric Rice [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Subject: [videoblogging] Re: Spirit can not be spoken for I think vlogging can be greatly impacted through directories. That is why we as a community should work to set up an open directory that
will become the accepted norm.Otherwise, others will set up slanted and manipulated and even closed directories. I am (clearly, since I built
Mefeedia.com) a believer in directories. They have their pros and cons. And I do believe strongly that having *open* directories is very important. I try hard to make Mefeedia
open, and there are things I still need to work on. 1 example is: I don't allow star ratings with reviews, because that would encourage a mindset of popularity is important.
Sorting by popularity is something I do on the /feeds/ page (because you have to sort by something), but it's the easy way out. I don't like it, and I'm adding other sorting options in the next version
(coming out end next week). The problem with popularity is not just that it encourages the popular mindset (is this highschool or what?) but also: what is the algorythm? Right now, in Mefeedia it's just
amount of videos watched. But that's not that great. So anyways, what does an open directory mean? Having a directory is great for 2 things: to introduce newbies to
videobloggers, and to go find some new stuff you didn't know about. Having an open directory means that all videobloggers have an equal chance to get listed in the directory, and to get discovered in the
directory. It means that you don't just promote the popular and commercial stuff, but that you actively try to promote the unknown vlogs too. Enough ranting! Peter

Thumbnail generation is a very CPU intensive process.
Mefeedia's server must download your videos, extract thumbs and save
them, then remove the video. Not to mention there are often errors due
to various video codecs and the fact that it can be hard to decode all
types and extract images.

Even Yahoo! has difficulty in this area, and they have much better
server resources than MeFeedia. Someone in Yahoo! Media Search once
told me that it can take several days for a video to be indexed
properly even after the crawler has discovered the video. Its for the
same exact reason. There is a batch queue set up to extract the
thumbnails and do whatever other processing needed on the file before
it gets indexed properly by the search engine.

[videoblogging] Re: iPod test

2005-11-29 Thread Steve Watkins
No I could not get that one to work, it wouldnt copy to the ipod. I
cannot analyse the file to work out why, perhaps it is not baseline,
but I have no software that can tell me whether it is baseline or main
profile.

Also in an email to me recently, you asked this:

Hey Steve: What you are saying to me is that you
simply changed the extension from .mov to .mp4 and it
worked on the iPod? Because I made a DVNTSC 640x480
movie from the original DV movie. I then exported it
Movie to iPod (320x240), and changed the extension
from .m4v to .mov. I did not do the export to .mp4,
selecting the baseline thing that Michael described.
 So I'm confused.

Im sorry all this stuff is confusing, I will try to make sense but I
may fail ;)

When you use the 'movie to ipod' option in quicktime, it creates a mp4
file that is the right sort of h264 mpeg4 to work on the ipod. But
Apple decided that rather than call it a .mp4, they will use .m4v
instead, which is confusing. So some people prefer to rename the file
back to .mp4, and it will still work.

If you do a manual export to .mp4, selecting baseline, it is creating
the same kind of file, it just doesnt automatically resize the footage
like the 'movie to ipod' export does, and it does not use the silly
extension .m4v

You cannot rename files created with either of the above methods to
.mov because they are not .movs.

You cannot make ipod compatible h264 .mov's by just using the normal
'export to quicktime' option and selecting h264 as the video codec,
because this does not create baseline stuff, and so is not ipod
compatible.

If you want to create a .mov that works on the ipod, you have 2
options. You may avoid h264 altogether and use the older kind of mpeg4
(or 3ivx), many peopl edo this as it ensures that the video clips will
play back on computers that dont have quicktime 7.

If you want a .mov that is h264 and is ipod compatible, you have to
export to a .mp4 file of the right sort (baseline) and then reload
that mp4 into quicktime, and save it as a self-contained movie.

Well I hope that maes some sense, Im a bit tired at the moment so I
may have made a mistake somewhere.

[videoblogging] Re: Blogger templates SPECIFIALLY for bloggers

2005-11-29 Thread Steve Watkins
Is it possible to create a system that doesnt need to download the
entire video in order to create a thumbnail, but only a little bit of
the start of the file? It seems a shame that we can start watching
some video formats before they have finished downloading, but that
thumbnail generation requires the entire video. I can imagine why in
practise this may not be possible with whatever serverside tools are
currently used to generate the thumbnails, and I guess it wouldnt work
with all video formats, but is it some sort of theoretical possiblity
at least?

[videoblogging] making a vlog soft

2005-11-29 Thread Will Luers
Many vloggers have adopted the url credit at the end of their vids.
So why not make this clickable?
Send us to the comments page, or text related to the video or to more video...
Here is a simple and free way to add hotspots to a vlog.

Ezedia is really basic quicktime authoring software and it is free if you limit
the amount of
frames and objects per project.

You make a 5-10 sec. movie of your credit sequence with a hotspot that can
link to a url in
a web browser. This can be a homepage or comments page, whatever. Then cut and
paste
this into the end of your video using Quicktime pro.

I think this will be a big step in making vlogs more porous (as a href=http://
hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vlog/archives/2005/04/22/credits/adrian miles/a puts
it).

Here is the link: http://www.ezedia.com/

Re: [videoblogging] Blogger templates SPECIFIALLY for bloggers

2005-11-29 Thread Markus Sandy

i understand all that
but do the math:

there are less than 2000 feeds as of today
i think 500 videos per feed is grossly over estimating most people's
*average* output
that's 100,000 thumbs
we have been told that they have been generating them for several weeks
(months?) now
let's assume only 6 weeks = 6 x 7 x 24 x 60 = 60480 minutes
that's 16 minutes per thumb and counting

more likely, there is an average of less than 200 videos per feed at
this time
so 40 minutes per thumb or higher?
wow, that's a lot!

this still does not explain why older video thumbs are not slowly
showing up for me and why some new ones aren't
(no changes in codec here)

Here is some wild thinking, that may be completely off-base.

I believe HTTP requests can use a range, so in theory, you could request
just the first X number of bytes from a file. This would allow for
grabbing just a portion of a video and saving that out. Now, the next
issue is, will that file be a valid enough file to generate a thumbnail

Send us to the comments page, or text related to the video or to more video...
Here is a simple and free way to add hotspots to a vlog.

Ezedia is really basic quicktime authoring software and it is free if you limit the amount of
frames and objects per project.

You make a 5-10 sec. movie of your credit sequence with a hotspot that can link to a url in
a web browser. This can be a homepage or comments page, whatever. Then cut and paste
this into the end of your video using Quicktime pro.

I think this will be a big step in making vlogs more porous (as a href="">http://
hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vlog/archives/2005/04/22/credits/adrian miles/a puts it).

I added a short preview, not a full review of Vlog It! trail version

within a matter of days. I've been using their stuff for several years
and it just works.

Will post a link to the iPod version soon.

2005-11-29 Thread Joshua Kinberg

I don't know the specifics of MeFeedia's server setup or queueing mechanism.
I don't know if its able to fail gracefully and move on when it encounters errors.
There are lots of video codecs out there -- not every QT, WMV, AVI, etc. are made equally.

As for setting a poster frame... yes, do that. Its generally good practice, though most people tend to disregard.

In FireAnt on Windows we extract thumbnails that display in your collection of videos.
If you've set a poster frame, that is the image that gets extracted.

making a vlog soft that:
I would like to add a link within my video. Can't you do this in QT Pro?

yes, and no.
using QT pro you can add a text track to QT. There is a special
category of text gtrack called href and ahref (and with QT pro you
can rename the text tracks).

each of these can contain time code and urls. so if you have a href
track and the user clicks at time a, then the url attached to that
will launch, if they click at time b, the url attached ot that will
launch. (remember a url could be another movie).

Ahref track, on other hand will *automatically* launch that url at
that time in your movie. this is best used in relation to frames (so
movie plays in frame A and content autoloads in frame B).

this is clumsy to do by hand, but possible, textation is shareware
that makes it a snap.

minor for others. YMMV. and yes, it is the Kuleshov effect, but don't

Re: [videoblogging] iPod test

2005-11-29 Thread R. Kristiansen

Hey,

Neither did the MissingPlaces movie work on my iPod. So I encoded it
with 3ivx and the new file, which works at least on mine, is online
here:
http://quicktime.blogsoft.org/dltq/temp/MissingPlaces.mov (24mb)

I decided to screencast the process of converting this file, and here
is then a 2.5 minute screencast showing how to make a movie iPod-ready
on the Windows PC, using QuickTime Pro and 3ivx:
http://www.dltq.org/?p=775

The screencast is not very good, but at least it gives you an idea :)

Best regards from Norway,

[videoblogging] Re: Blogger templates SPECIFIALLY for bloggers

2005-11-29 Thread petertheman
OK, Here's an overview of the Mefeedia thumbnail feature.

1) It doesn't generate thumbs for *all* types of movies. For most
movies it does, including Flash movies, Windows media movies, you name
it. There are some codecs that it can't handle, unfortunately, but it
gets most of them.

2) It takes the server about 3 minutes of hard, processor intensive
work per movie: download movie, create thumbs, resize thumbs, cleanup.
This is a dual processor server with 2 Gigs of RAM.

3) We do 2 movies per minute now (before we switched to the dedicated
server we did 1 movie each 5 minutes). So far, in total, we've
generated thumbs for 64,695 movies. Mefeedia has 111,054 movies in its
database, so we are clearly behind. More and more people are starting
to videoblog, so its like a race to keep up.

4) We are currently working to find solutions that don't require me to
pay 10s of 1000s of dollars in server fees (out of my pocket)..

5) The reason that old movies still haven't been thumbed is that there
are about 55,000 movies in the queue right now - it just takes time.
We're working on solutions.

So in short: hang in there. It's always getting better, and this is
one of the biggest priorities we are working on :) Thanks for your
patience!

Let me know if you have any other specific questions I can answer :)

Isn't this fun? Hey, for competing with Yahoo and Google I think we're
doing alright ;)

Cheers,
Peter
PS: the math below is somewhat mistaken. For each movie, we generate
about 20 thumbnails, so our total so far is well over 1,000,000
thumbnails generated.

 i understand all that
 but do the math:

there are less than 2000 feeds as of today
i think 500 videos per feed is grossly over estimating most people's
 *average* output
 that's 100,000 thumbs
we have been told that they have been generating them for several weeks
 (months?) now
 let's assume only 6 weeks = 6 x 7 x 24 x 60 = 60480 minutes
that's 16 minutes per thumb and counting

more likely, there is an average of less than 200 videos per feed at
 this time
so 40 minutes per thumb or higher?
 wow, that's a lot!

this still does not explain why older video thumbs are not slowly
showing up for me and why some new ones aren't
 (no changes in codec here)

 Joshua Kinberg wrote:

Mefeedia's server must download your videos, extract thumbs and save
them, then remove the video. Not to mention there are often errors due
to various video codecs and the fact that it can be hard to decode all
 types and extract images.

Even Yahoo! has difficulty in this area, and they have much better
server resources than MeFeedia. Someone in Yahoo! Media Search once
told me that it can take several days for a video to be indexed
properly even after the crawler has discovered the video. Its for the
same exact reason. There is a batch queue set up to extract the
thumbnails and do whatever other processing needed on the file before
it gets indexed properly by the search engine.

with all video formats, but is it some sort of theoretical possiblity
 at least?

Yep, it's theoretically possible. The amount of development work would
probably be high though, so then it ends up being cheaper paying for a
few more servers, in the short term :) It's all a balance about where
to focus our very limited resources...

ah,

alas no. first of all ezedia doesn't write absolute paths, only
relative, so all the media in the media directory are the videoclips
that Kate's movie needs (different to the rhizomes that she links to).

This is an excellent example of the problems with syndication at the
moment. This is very good work. sophisticated, very very easy to make
in Ezedia (it really did take one class to teach them how to do all
this), and an excellent example of one sort of vlogging. But it can't
syndicate because each video you add to your project becomes a child
movie in ezedia. This is why it can make cool things, like movies
inside of movies.

RSS breaks this stuff, which is why it currently condemns us to TV in a box.

2005-11-29 Thread Will Luers
I wish ezedia could open a new quicktime player.
Suppose a browser is good enough.
A syndicated teaser video about the student's project with a hotspot to go to
the QT file on
a webpage. That might work.

This is what I'm exploring now for a narrative project. What is frustrating
about RSS is you
loose text as an intergrated part of a vlog. Of course vloggers use words, but
not in a way
that is new and interesting, like your student's project.

For example, a travel vlog - instead of one 5 min video. You could string/net
together
many very short videos with text. This is where the clickable vlog could take
you out of the
aggregator and down some intersting paths...

anyway,
these things take time
