READ MORE:

gawker, jobs, video

Because
we all like to watch, Gawker is looking to develop some original video
content. Think mini-documentaries on crack: watching the media wanks
slide in and out of Michael's, screwing with the Condé security desk,
or going undercover to document the horror of a book party.

As such, we're looking to hire some guerilla video filmmakers. You
MUST have your own DV equipment. And while the pay is meager, the
exposure will be fantastic. Or, at least, better than that of Current.

Interested? Send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a
paragraph about yourself (try not to bore us) and a paragraph about
what sorts of original videos you'd like to see on Gawker. Any emails
with attachments will be deleted, and we'll promptly forget you even
exist.

Not a filmmaker but have an idea for a great Gawker video? Drop us a line.-- best regards,Deirdré Straughanwww.beginningwithi.com (personal)

Dunno about Flash.
Opening links automatically have never been good style. It's why pop-up
blockers are so well-liked.

Links in Quicktime have been discussed countless times on this list. You
can use the linkubator and modify the output to your needs (just open the
mov from linkubator in any text editor). URL:

There's a drag and drop option in eZedia. The free demo version will
handle your links fine. There was a long long discussion on using the free
version a while back on the list with step-by-step guides.

Let's say there was a website that allowed you to post your video
clips to
be viewed and purchased by mobile phone customers.

 Would you use it?

Only if the licensing wasn't restrictive (I own my content and can
take it anywhere I like). Then I would try it. If it generated some
real $, I'd continue to use it. Hell, if it was easy to use I'd
probably use it even if it generated no significant $ (for anyone),
just as a service to my users.

[videoblogging] Re: Rocketboom to Auction Advertising Time on Ebay?

2006-01-30 Thread Ms. Kitka
Don't you hate when you think of something awesome but don't grab hold
of it first? I thought of doing this a couple of week's ago and I
knew that it would be a successful publicity stunt, but I didn't do it
because my parents still don't know about my show and I didn't want to
do something so public without warning them first!

The other reason I didn't do it was because Ebay may have taken down
my bid for the same reason as their sister company PayPal closed my
account; the dreaded adult content guidelines. There may be no
actual adult content on my show, but these jerks over at PayPal/Ebay
just love to crush anything sexual with their iron fists.

Good luck to the Rocketboom team!

I've not really been keeping up, I try to keep out of the Rocketboom social minefield, but I read the blogarithms link you gave.  So if Amanda and Andrew will be making the ads and vetoing, I don't know how much response they will get, but then, 130,000 downloads per day, as global viewing figures and TV ratings go, is very little, but not bad for an internet site.  From a business point of view, it will be interesting to see what happens.  Rachel (Alternative Kitten)On 29 Jan 2006, at 13:54, Nerissa ((TheVideoQueen)) wrote: The story you link to is the gist, but not quite right on some of the   detail but here is a better example: http://pdberger.com/blogarithms-rocketboom/ http://www.whatsnextblog.com/archives/2006/01/ rocketboom_to_auction_ad_slot.asp This all happened a bit early, I'll send a link tomrrow night to the   actual e-bay ad itself. Bit over the top, David.  There have to be ads on TV to pay for making the programs, it's not cheap.  What we vloggers do is cheap, and it's a hobby, so we spend the money without any desire to recoup it.  Some media sites probably have the same problem as TV - it's not a hobby, it's not done in spare time, so they need to recoup some money to pay for what they are doing.  I know not everyone agrees with the capitalist system, but it is the one that has worked best for the last 20,000 odd years, and I have not seen anyone come up with a better one yet.  Free lunches are a great thing, but I've not yet found one.Rachel (Alternative Kitten)On 29 Jan 2006, at 15:59, David Howell wrote: Not that I am an A-List vlogger by any means, I wouldnt do this no matter what the reason was. There doesnt have to be ads in the actual videos. Find an alternative

If you want advertising, make it my choice whether or not I will click

Point Andreas.  But BBC and HBO are paid for by subscription (or in the case of the BBC, by TV Licence).  There is no subscription cost for most vlogs that I know of, so that does not pay for it either.  And the only ones the tax payer would pay for are Government sponsored/produced items.  Everything costs money at the bottom, and everything has to be paid for.  Who pays for the Danish public service provider - is that TV Licence, or tax payers?  Ads are what is used for channels that are free or cheap to most, but are paid for via commercial sponsorship, ie ads.  Rachel (Alternative Kitten)On 30 Jan 2006, at 15:07, Andreas Haugstrup wrote: On Mon, 30 Jan 2006 15:47:50 +0100, Rachel Knight   [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Bit over the top, David.  There have to be ads on TV to pay for making the programs, it's not cheap. Not a problem David, but if the ads are your choice whether to watch them, then they won't pay as much, as they are not guaranteed as large an audience to target.  As most vlogging is a hobby, I don't think it will apply for a long time, but anyone who wants to go commercial will have to find the money somewhere.  And ads are better than sponsored by.  E.g., I love the program Lost, but if I see the ad for 118118 one more time, I will kill something.  It's a relief to watch Housewives, that is sponsored by shampoo.  And if I don't want to see ads, yes, I avoid the places where they have them, but that reduces my choice of what is available to me to watch, on TV or on the internet.  But as you say, it is your right to choose what to watch.  Rachel (Alternative Kitten)On 30 Jan 2006, at 15:47, David Howell wrote: Over the top? David, the last I heard Rocketboom was going to place ads at the END
of their content, not before.

I have no doubt that Rocketboom work their asses off to put their show
out as regularly as they do. So, why can't you understand how
important it is for them to make an extra buck by providing advertising?

Most videobloggers don't put out 5 shows per week, so how are those
devoted to providing this amount of content supposed to keep doing it?
Also, what is better than making a paycheck from your hobby? Most

Josh, I should have been more clear: My vlog uses other people's

Just a note that if you are using CC stuff that is specified
'Non-Commercial' you can still contact the person/organization that
holds the rights and secure another license from them. The idea behind
applying a CC license is that it is a *default* license that (should)
easily and clearly specify what you can do with the works, and if you
want to do something else, discuss it with the creator.

Sure, it might be a pain contacting people whose work you've used about
another license, but it might be worthwhile to all parties.

As I've mentioned, on my Usage page I explain what I consider
'Non-Commercial' and clearly note that if you want a commercial license,
to get it touch with me. The idea being that if something was all my
creation, I could license as I wish... and of course if I used the CC
work of others, I'd need to discuss with them as well. Or something like
that...

Non-Commercial is such a hard to define term. If you have ads on your
site, or affiliate links, is it non-commercial? If the ads make you a
grand total of $200 per year, is that really commercial? You could make
more selling your plasma...

Here is a simple solution for that. Took me all of 30 seconds to think
about it.

User clicks link to video.

Window opens with video in it and an ad placed below the video.

Solution solved. Advertisers needs are met with the displaying if the
ad throughout the whole video and the user gets immediate
uninterrupted video content.

Yes? No?

Making money is not Leo's objective. He has a full-time job at Words

it was mentioned that "free lunches are a great thing, but i've not yet
found one":but possibly udid.

distorting history to argue a point-of-view is akin to a "free lunch"... at
the very least, it's relying on others ignorance to
press home an advantage.

David may or may not have been "over the top" but
not by the argument that Capitalism has been around for "20,000 odd years"
try 200 years... a Capitalist paradigm isan
informativeway toview the world. but it is not the only one, nor the
one held by a majority of people.

for the record: America (which i'm guessing is
where the majority of people on this mailing list are from) is NOT a Capitalist
society... it was almost one in the 19th century (if that helps)...
today the U.S.A is a mixed-ecomomy withplacedfreedoms and
controls.

~

in terms of public benefit: Police, Fire,
Ambulance, Libraries, Museums, Galleries, Roads, Docks, Airports, Bridges are
generally created with funds derived from taxation or endowments.

neither of these require Capitalism to operate. ANY
form of economic system will suffice. Vlogging could easily be seen as a public
service... radio andtelevision are alreadyregarded as "essentials",
not luxuries. if computers aren't yet, they will be soon.

community channels, tho far from glitzy, serve a
function that a national network can't: they serve the community. they still
exist today because they are useful... useful is generally quite boring i admit,
u won't find an equivalent to American Idol, but that isn't their
purpose.

~

personallyi think having a vlog with
commercials or product placement would be an interesting experience. it's gonna
happen more and more over time anyway. the potential for loss-of-freedom is
obvious, but that isalways a potentialwhen SOMEONE ELSES money is
involved.

might nothappen tho.the sponsor may not
care about the content (which is quite likely as long as the number of viewers
stays consistent). it's only when a subject that is threatening to the sponsor
on a larger scalecomes up that problems arise.

overall i think it'd begreat to be one-of-the-first vloggers doing
something like that... a footnote in a history book sorta thing. cool.

i don't really see why it matters if a person does or does not use
commercials: you want the money, go get it. you want the freedom, go get it. you
want a mix, go get it. make your choice. why does only one of them have to be
"right"? why not "right for me" instead? that's the whole point anyway isn't
it?

Bit over the top, David. There have to be ads on TV to pay for
making the programs, it's not cheap. What we vloggers do is cheap, and
it's a hobby, so we spend the money without any desire to recoup it.
Some media sites probably have the same problem as TV - it's not a hobby, it's
not done in spare time, so they need to recoup some money to pay for what they
  are doing.

I know not everyone agrees with the capitalist system, but it is the one
that has worked best for the last 20,000 odd years, and I have not seen anyone
come up with a better one yet. Free lunches are a great thing, but I've

[videoblogging] Re: Rocketboom to Auction Advertising Time on Ebay?

2006-01-30 Thread David Howell
Ah. Well...for me personally, I wouldnt run a video commercial. My
solution was an attempt to avoid the commercials in video.

While I am not opposed to ads on a website, my wish is to not
interfere with the viewers experience of watching my/the content.

I may or may not include an ad below my videos in a pop-up window.
Still thinking about it. Would the small amount of revenue gained from
that be worth it? Maybe. However if viewers dont watch my videos
because of it, then I would certainly remove the ads.

For Rocketboom, with the multitudes of viewers they have, an
experiment like this may not be so harmful to lose a few viewers here
and there. For someone like me with a small amount of visitors, losing
a any amount of people watching would make a difference.

bottom line in my opinion is thisif your audience appreciates your work and is at least half-witty as to why you are trying such ad placements, then they should be happy to watch 15-30 seconds of this ad in order to support you.
if they are completely turned off by this approach and stop watching/supporting your work, then why would you care about them anyway?if they were watching and enjoying your work for however long they were 'subscribed' then they are the ones who were getting a deal consuming what you take the time to create and publish.
if you are able to filter and use more quality ads then i dont think it should be looked at as bad or evil... what it is, folks, is reality.you're not going to keep Internet Video pure... whether a vlog or not... with your negative sentiment about ads and content creators who decide to use them for sustainability.
look at it this way... if some subscribers drop off if you do use ads then you are filtering your viewer base with those who truly support you. screw the others. they can go blog about how ads suck and hwo vloggers are selling their souls, corrupting the culture and so on... you know... noisemaking.
do what you want if it works for you. just make sure you do it well ;-)SullOn 1/30/06, David Howell

Why do so many people here think this is such a horrible thing? They

2006-01-30 Thread Ms. Kitka
I was thinking about the auction and some of the discussion it
triggered. I was wondering if there were any envy involved. Not
saying there is, just wondering...

I have to agree with you, I have no doubt that there are many jealous
people out there wishing they had the number of viewers and an income
from their hobby, like RB.

And then I realized what the auction is really going to trigger.
Everyone is going to know how much Andew and Amanda will be making!
Right now, I think it will be more than a tidy sum. Because it's on
eBay, the information will be public.

Whatever the amount they make from this is well deserved for their
innovative approach. The more press Rocketboom gets for their
creativity, the more chances all videobloggers have of becoming more
popular.

Andrew has been incredibly generous in sharing information about
vlogging with us. But this is going to be earthshaking.

Andrew has been very generous and I find it insulting that some people
on this message board would attack his tactics (especially without
reading the eBay listing fine print).

I hope the vlogging community can survive it!

People are always talking about a vlogging community but I have yet
to really SEE one. All I see is a group of pundits on a Yahoo Group
who attack each other for every line they write. Gees, I mean, people
are even attacking Capitalism today! Is the vlogging community
supposed to be a community of communists? I sure hope not.

 Stan Hirson

I truly wish this videoblogging group was more about helping each
other than attacking each other... then it would truly be a community.

Ah. Well...for me personally, I wouldnt run a video commercial. My
solution was an attempt to avoid the commercials in video.

While I am not opposed to ads on a website, my wish is to not
interfere with the viewers experience of watching my/the content.

Well, as they are creating the ads themselves they are very likely
very rocketboomish in style and thus it wouldn't interfere that much.
Besides they will be at the end so you can still decide whether to
watch it or not.
(or pay that monthly fee...)

I may or may not include an ad below my videos in a pop-up window.
Still thinking about it. Would the small amount of revenue gained from
that be worth it? Maybe. However if viewers dont watch my videos
because of it, then I would certainly remove the ads.

Well, pop-up window ads probably wouldn't bring that much money.
Actually I like their idea very much because

a) they are having control of the ads
b) they will fit more into Rocketboom because they will probably
   be the same style
c) they try something new (always good)
d) by trying something new they make some noise about it and it will
probably attract more interested advertisers and maybe even viewers (I
am at least very interested in how it will look like. OTOH I am not a
new viewer.. ;-)

For Rocketboom, with the multitudes of viewers they have, an
experiment like this may not be so harmful to lose a few viewers here
and there. For someone like me with a small amount of visitors, losing
a any amount of people watching would make a difference.

Well, as I am doing it more as a hobby here and there and not as
professional as Rocketboom (which also means: not daily) I don't need
ads as I can finance this with my other work (or just stop it).

So I am looking forward to it :-)
(and of course they really should make money out of this as they are
innovative and sort of making marketing for the whole vlogging scene.
Besides they also need to live from something)

What you are referring to there is Subscription based TV. Nothing is free. The BBC charges us £120 a year just for having the technology to be able to recieve TV pictures, they call it a TV licence, it's like a dog licence except you don't have to take it for walks. As far as I know HBO is a Pay To View. As for the Danish, dunno, you know that bit. But then the question is. would you pay to watch Rocketboom? Ads are the only way to go for these guys unfortunately if they want to do this thing full time. That's my two pence worth anyway..

There don't have to be ads on tv, no more than there have to be ads
anywhere else. Is the BBC running ads now? I know the Danish public
service provider is not and have never run ads on either of their two
channels. HBO is the US is not running ads either.

Someone has to pay for the programming, but it doesn't have to be financed
 via ads.

you can take my old tv cable fees and divide it amongst yourselves.

actually, take half - then it will seem like a good deal and not just a
replacement

the problem is: how do we divide it up and pay it out from so many to
so many?

this problem already has solutions in the music industry; some are mo
betta than others, of course

The vlogs are short, usually less than 30 seconds long, and are in 3gp

far, I've been posting often. I'm still working on sound quality. :)

I think Rocketboom is doing the right thing, taking control of the

desperately want financial success and will give up control in order to
get it. Envy? As others have said, I'm not looking for commercial
success from videoblogging, but if I were, I'd do my best to work as
hard as Andrew and Amanda have to get where they are.

Andrew has been incredibly generous in sharing information about
vlogging with us. But this is going to be earthshaking.

Andrew has been very generous and I find it insulting that some people
on this message board would attack his tactics (especially without
reading the eBay listing fine print).

+1 on that. Andrew has contributed to this list, often with information
or his insight that others do not have. Thanks Andrew!

Hmmm, I dunno... I think the list has it's ups and downs as far as what
people discuss. I've learned a *lot* about videoblogging (and other
things) in the last 8 months from this list. Besides, what's wrong with
attacking Capitalism, or communists for that matter? Feel free to make a

Are many news or other TV personalities getting into the videoblogging

Was Bob involved with any of the TV news coverage of 'normal'

[videoblogging] Definitive iTunes RSS for Video Podcasts

2006-01-30 Thread ph8drus
Hi,

I've tried a couple of times to submit my video podcast to the iTunes
podcast directory and have been rejected on two accounts. The second
time I used the example described in their tech spec at:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/techspecs.html

as a template for my own and made sure to have every element that they
required and double checked the formatting. Both times I received
notice that the podcast was rejected but no reason was given as to why.

Does anyone have definitive information on what Apple is expecting or
any tried-and-true formula for creating an rss file that they will
accept?

Pointers would be helpful...

[videoblogging] 1-click subscription button for FireAnt

2006-01-30 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Hey all,

A lot of people have asked us for an easy, 1-click method for viewers
to subscribe to feeds with FireAnt. Well, here it is and its easy!

Put a FireAnt 1-click subscription button to your site!

Make your FireAnt 1-click subscription button here:
 http://FireAnt.tv/buttonmaker

This will make code for you to copy and paste into your site.

When a viewer clicks this button on your site it will popup a small
window that explains subscription, offers a download link for FireAnt
if the user doesn't already have it, and includes a subscription link
that launches FireAnt and auto-subscribes to your RSS channel (okay,
so that's really 2-clicks).

Users will need the latest version of FireAnt for this to work.
If you haven't downloaded the latest version, please get it at:
 http://FireAnt.tv/download

Lastly, if you haven't seen our new website and videoblog Directory,
please go to:
 http://FireAnt.tv

Please let us know if you have questions. We always try to answer
really really quickly.

Thanks,
Josh

The vlogs are short, usually less than 30 seconds long, and are in 3gp

far, I've been posting often. I'm still working on sound quality. :)

[videoblogging] Re: News anchor 'videoblogging'

2006-01-30 Thread Gena
Yeah, a few of them do, Brian Williams of NBC News also has a blog.
Don't know if they actually write it or have a staff member backfill
if they get pressed for time.

I support freedom of speech, er typing. Even for high paid news
readers who may or may not be reporters or journalists. I can't tell
anymore.

Was Bob involved with any of the TV news coverage of 'normal'

[videoblogging] Re: A question to the video bloggers

2006-01-30 Thread William Volk
I asked:

Let's say there was a website that allowed you to post your video clips to
be viewed and purchased by mobile phone customers.

 Would you use it?

Ted Tagami replied:

Need more info. Terms of Service, Revenue splits, Licensing and ownership
 rights, et al.

The creator would retain ownership. Net revenue would be about the same as
if you sold the video clip to a mobile publisher. Video would be
automatically converted to the formats needed for various phones. You would
have your own page for your uploaded content.

Peter replied:

Only if the licensing wasn't restrictive (I own my content and can
take it anywhere I like). Then I would try it. If it generated some
real $, I'd continue to use it. Hell, if it was easy to use I'd
probably use it even if it generated no significant $ (for anyone),
just as a service to my users.

Cool. Good to hear. I'll let you know more when the site launches..

Bill

Subject: [videoblogging] What do I have to do?

Dear all,

I am finding quite difficult, programming wise to get my project off
the ground. I asked the jedi council, leading members in session on
Saturday night GMT, Lunchtime in the Americas, about how to get a
little link from the end of the video to a paypal site to donate
money for charity. I was shunned or completely ignored by those in
attendence, who seemed to be more interested in rell=payment! If
you don't believe me check out http://flash.kmi.open.ac.uk:8080/fm/
fmm.php?pwd=dd8a0b-3015 my entry is at 21.52. Ashamed I would be.
Does anyone have any ideas on the following?

1. How to put a link into a flash or quicktime movie so that when it
finishes it takes you directly to a pay pal site to donate money?

2. Some of us are musically talented, does anyone have a song?

3. Why for the most part Americans only read half an e-mail or
listen to a few words of what is being said. I wonder if, president
Bush being told that a few years ago Iraq had missiles that could be
bought into action within 45 minutes and destroy places like Israel
or Cyprus. And bush only caught the bit about 45 minutes, that's why
we went to war because America has ceased to be able to listen
properly? If this is the case please check out the two links below.

Donating a DVD of the workshop to the local library...that is a
great idea!

Last October, I donated a two disc set of the Port Townsend Kinetic
Skulpture Race:

http://kineticu.blogspot.com/

Over half of the footage was published on the above video blog.

The DVD set has been checked out when I've tried to get it.

[videoblogging] Videoblogging-Universe snippets?

2006-01-30 Thread Enric
I'm wondering how the snippets of video are derived at
http://videoblogging-universe.com/? Are they extracted (and resized
to thumbnail size)? Or do they come straight out of the target
quicktime files from the sites? Or another method?

   Thanks,
