Just set up blogger so people have to retype in those weird-looking letters when they post a comment, and you'll prevent comment spam. Or with Wordpress -- install the latest version (2.1). Comment spam is a huge problem, but easily handled. Definitely not a reason for all of us to get rid of comments! That would be sad :-(

issues there. I wasnt sure if it was my connection or not? After a

often. Also, I just downloaded three blip vids from various sites

2006-03-24 Thread usadutch2001
You can cheat as much as you want with WordPress templates, they
call it themes. WordPress is a shared open resource. Most of the
time as long as you keep the credits where they belong you can do
basically as much as you want with it.

I have about 450 WordPress themes, share hosting with me and I will
get them to you for free. Just mail me.

Having your own domainname and hosting is the most freedom you can
think of without the restrictions of the shared or multi-user blogs
like wordpress.com and blogger.com it also gives you freedom of the
plugins to use and there are hundreds of them.

[videoblogging] Blip

2006-03-24 Thread David Howell
I'm starting to think not a week goes by that I dont post this question.

Anyone else experiencing slowness with Blip? It's been going on for me
for 2 days with any vloggers site I visit that has their work on Blip.
Got so bad for me that I finally just went and uploaded a copy to my
own server so that people could actually watch the video.

I'm trying to figure out if it's just my connection or Blip. However
there are no problems for me with line speed tests or any other sites
not hosting videos on Blip.

Re: [videoblogging] new geert lovink in milano video

2006-03-24 Thread Joshua Kinberg
I really wish I could see this video. I've enjoyed Geert Lovink's work
for a while. His book "Dark Fiber" from a few years back is really
excellent.

Unfortunately, the video served by Daily Motion is incredibly slow.
Its taken me 15 minutes now to get through the first 30 sec of the
video with several stutters waiting for the clip to buffer. Most of
this time is completely unnecessary footage of Geert simply getting
his laptop set up. Some editing here would really make a lot of sense.
I ended up giving up on it after waiting and being frustrated.

RE: [videoblogging] Digest Number 1789

2006-03-24 Thread Carl Weaver
Susan - I look forward to meeting you at Vloggercon. Your last line in which
you state your name, etc. reminded me of the rallying cry my wife and I have
adopted:
"We will not roll over and die until after we get back from Vloggercon."

This was after several weeks (months, years) of feeling beaten down by many
things, including the weather and our jobs. So we decided to take life by
the horns and decide not to give up until after Vloggercon. All bets are off
after that.

Seriously, I really look forward to this thing, meeting everyone and talking
about making media. This is what my new job should be. Anyone want to pay
me?

Cheers,

The last time I posted, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to
attend vloggercon because of work.

I talked with my boss, and we worked this out; My work window is from
8am Thursday to 8am Saturday (48 hours) and he said I can leave after
that. I booked a 10:30am nonstop flight from Newark to San Francisco
on Saturday morning; I'll be arriving about 2pm. So I won't be there
the whole day, but I'll at least be there, and I'll be there all day
Sunday. Also, my flight was Continental--and it gave me about $20 a
night off a room at the Mosser.

My name's Susan Kirkpatrick, and I'M GOING TO VLOGGERCON!!!

Do you have a sense of how many vloggers have contributed to this body
of work? Looking at the site, it seems you have around 6800 feeds. Is
that correct? I know this doesn't correlate with the number of
vloggers  - I know my vlog is fed twice on mefeedia, for example - so
I wonder if it's possible to do a census of some sort to get more data
on how many people are contributing, where they are, etc.Peter's off-line for a few days, so I'll take this one.We do have ~6800 feeds, and yes, there is some duplication.  We are working on getting the database cleaned up.  The information you are looking for isn't readily available, but I am sure I could get an estimation in the next few days.  This is a good question.
As for where vloggers are, we don't track that information, but vlogmap.org does an amazing job of itThat would be cool actually, to click on a feed in mefeedia and have a link to where they are on the map in vlogmap.

the editing is really good... clean and simple.

Zod bless Henry Rollins.

I haven't gotten Vegas to compress even decently. What I do is export a basically uncompressed vegas file in mov, then recompress that .mov file in Sorenson (though other have good results using Quicktime Pro as a compressor).
What final format do you want (mov, wmv, etc) ?Let me know how it comes out!On 3/24/06, littleblueriver7 <

I'm on a PC and my files originated in .mov and the only other editing

that matters but just thought I'd let you know.
So anyone who has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

[videoblogging] N.O. Rights Now Availabkle for Rental

2006-03-24 Thread ~ FluxRostrum

howdy,

There's a new video rental service called Liberation Video; they are using the
NetFlix model to rent truth media. They requested a dvd collection of mine
title N.O. Rights which holds 4 pieces on housing & other rights
issues in Post
Katrina New Orleans.

It is now availbale for rental along with many of the most important
documentaries of the Post 911 era.
http://www.liberationvideo.com/details.html?DVDSKU=146

I'm getting paid a little; based on demmand. The more copies they need to
fullfill requests the more I get. If I said how much per copy
you'd laugh; but
it's .. something. This rental service idea represents an additional means of
distribution that could make it easier for marginally interested people to
access the truth so I'm happy just to be included at this point.

PS. if you have not yet seen the "Iraq War 3rd Anniversary Special" I highly
reccommend it.

Re: [videoblogging] Blogger is starting to wear on my nerves. Question re:moving videoblog

2006-03-24 Thread robert a/k/a r
I've got accounts at both DH and LP, both have automated Wordpress installation. Personally, I find the LP control panel easier.

The bandwidth DH offers is larger, the downloads feel faster at LP.

I have my http://vlognews.24x7.com over at blogger just to keep an eye on their service and developments (as I have blogs at other hosts too) and, too, am disappointed by the downtime and slow response from support.

In the end, it's a personal decision, no one hosting service will ever be perfect for everyone. Good luck!

[videoblogging] Vegas Compression Help

2006-03-24 Thread littleblueriver7
I'm a brand new vlogger and new to video editing.
I'm working on my first video and I've got it all ready to compress
but I'm not sure which settings to use. I tried to guess based on
freevlog's tutorials but nothing I tried worked.
I'm on a PC and my files originated in .mov and the only other editing
program I've got on my computer is Windows Movie Maker. Not sure if
that matters but just thought I'd let you know.
So anyone who has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

PS Thank you to everyone who's helped me so far!

Re: [videoblogging] Re: What's the latest on the new video iPod?

2006-03-24 Thread Jen Simmons
Yeah, no one knows what Apple will announce, but we do know _when_ Apple will announce. These are the upcoming dates when all of us Apple-watchers expect something:

April 1, 2006 -- the 30th anniversary of the founding of Apple. Could be anything. Will be something cool. Perhaps the rest of the laptop line (the MacBook and MacBook Pro in several sizes, replacing the Powerbooks and the iBooks completely. Perhaps any of these fun rumored products like a video ipod with a bigger screen / a phone / a pda / something no one has thought of ...)

April 23, 2006 - Apple's presentation at NAB (National Association of Broadcasters. Final Cut 6 Studio (almost certainly - my guess is native-Intel-chip-only or universal-install version with more HD support and other power-hungry / render-heavy features that put that faster chip to good use). Plus hardware: The laptops? The new Intel-chip towers? Normally ipods aren't a NAB-type product, but a t.v. / movie-centric iPod would make sense at NAB.

August 7, 2006 - the Apple WWDC (Wide World Developers Conference) - probably OSx.5, plus the new towers / the laptops if they aren't out already... WWDC is usually in June, but Apple recently pushed it to August, presumably to get in line with big hardware announcement(s). WWDC usually includes high-end hardware / big OS changes / power products. I really doubt any iPod announcements will happen there. I think the birthday, NAB and late fall for christmas are all much better marketing days for an iPod. August is a dead retail announcement month.

Also, Apple's recently announced a bunch of products on days without any special events. They've been just calling a press conferences and dropping pretty big bombs -- so they might keep doing that...

My buying recommendations are:

1) don't buy anything the week before one of these for-sure dates. Even if you buy an older model anyway, you'll get a better price if something new has come out.

2) if you need a computer / ipod / whatever now, then buy it now. (I'm about to buy two quad-G5 towers, 'cause I need them now and have to run software that isn't out in a Intel-chip version yet. It sucks, but hey, the show must go on, and there's no pushing our opera's schedule for the computer's.)

3) If you are thinking about buying a laptop or tower and can wait -- then wait (except for the 15" macbook pro). Apple has said, out loud, absolutely for sure they will be replacing all of the G4s laptops and the G5 towers by the end of 2006. If you aren't using the machine for a specific project that's happening now, then wait. The G4 and G5 chips will be dead in 7-8 months or less. Plus, I personally expect a laptop case redesign this year... I find it hard to believe that Apple will stay with the G4 case for the new chip. They've redesigned the case with every major chip change in every product that I can think of for as long as I can remember.

4) If you are thinking of buying an iMac or mac mini, then go right ahead, nothing big will happen with those anytime soon (unless Apple redesigns these cases, but there's no rumors about that right now. If they do that, I'd expect it in preparation for the back-to-school and Christmas buying season -- ie: Sept/Oct, after case redesigns of the pro-level productions).

5) ipod -- who knows. Those big-screen video iPod rumors seem strong, but they might just be strongly wishful thinking. There have been plenty of super-popular rumors that never amounted to anything. An ipod with a screen that big would have some serious battery issues, so I'm skeptical. I'm sure someone at Apple is trying to develop one... the question is just will they succeed sometime soon, or will it be a long time from now. And while it would be cool for us videobloggers to have a big screen to watch, do we really want Apple dominating the popular culture with a full blown Movie Store. I want truly independent grassroots media to have most of the space for as long as possible, before Hollywood products take over the popular imagination of video distribution on the web.

imho,
jen

On Mar 24, 2006, at 10:04 AM, Bill Streeter wrote:

True that. Apple doesn't really pre-announce these products. They
like to keep everything secret and then have big events to unveil
them. So all the rumors you're hearing right now are just that
rumors. Sometimes the rumors are right, sometimes they're way off.
So it's best not to make your buying decisions on these rumors. I
mean if you want to wait until june to see if Apple comes out with
something new that probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

Re: [videoblogging] Blogger is starting to wear on my nerves. Question re:moving videoblog

2006-03-24 Thread Jen Simmons
If you want to move up from blogger, I suggest wordpress. You'll need your own webserver space, and the bravery to try some scary-seeming installation steps (that in the end aren't bad at all) to get wordpress onto your server space. Moving all your old posts from blogger to wordpress is easy -- which is cool, because you don't have to start over or retype everything... all your old posts are moved over + retained. As for the templates, no, you can't use a blogger template for anything but blogger. You'll have to pick out a wordpress template. Perhaps that's a place to start -- go surfing for a wordpress template (called a "theme") and see if there are any you like. You can modify them easily by just swapping out images (masthead, background etc.) More complex modifications are pretty hard and something most people don't do. Adding / changing the links in the sidebar, etc, is super easy -- easier than with blogger 'cause you do it in the blog adminstration world (in forms) not on the template/theme documents.
Wordpress is more powerful than blogger -- categories being the biggest new feature. AND since the whole rig-a-ma-roll in on _your_ server, (not half on your server (if you have one) and half on their servers (like blogger), then if wordpress servers go down, it doesn't affect you at all.
[All of this is me writing about wordpress the full install -- gotten at wordpress.org, and not wordpress.com, the new free service. The problem with Wordpress.com is that it's very limited in how you can customize how it looks. Basically you are stuck with their pre-fab templates without any way to modify them -- so I don't recommend that service (yet).]

I know their motives aren't necessarily glorious, they're probably just after ratings and saw a huge flood of feedback.  Still it's interesting to see this debate brought back into the light.

I don't have a video iPod, but I think the cool feature is hooking it
up to your TV.
The Creative Zen Vision can do this too (at least the bigger one
can... haven't seen the small one).

As portable video players go though, I have to say that the Sony PSP
has the best screen and viewing experience. If only it had a hard

[videoblogging] Re: What's the latest on the new video iPod?

2006-03-24 Thread cooper3acd
If your primary use for it is video, definitely wait.

I love my 5g ipod, but the video feature is indeed not great except
as a little added bonus to the music capabilities (and for amazing
non-geek friends with).

Cheers,
Rob

2006-03-24 Thread gmjoyce_y
Thanks for the input. I'm surprised to hear that at least some of you
aren't so hot on the current video iPod. It's sold millions and I
think Robert Scoble of Microsoft and On10.net even said they were
using QT as a format because of all the video iPods out there.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but, as I said, it's interesting.

Damien and Lionel: can one of you email me off-list? I have a couple
of book reviewers' names and I'd be happy to share their info with the
other vlogging book authors.

The Dummies book should be available on July 5.

It was cancelled by ORA and picked up by a different publisher, but I

[videoblogging] Re: What's the latest on the new video iPod?

2006-03-24 Thread Bill Streeter

One more thing: the iPods seem to keep more value than the average
consumer product. I was able to sell my year old 4th gen ipod for
$200 on ebay which made it posible to buy my current $300 iPod video
(and I think it works really well BTW). So I don't think you would
be totally put out if you got a new iPod today and Apple made an
anouncement soon.

2006-03-24 Thread Peter Van Dijck
Apart from the fact that, YEY, it *does* video, I was a bit
dissapointed with the old video ipod. It lags before playing a movie.
Mine tended to hang. It's not that smooth to skip to the next
movie

But yes, I'd wait a few months. The current video iPod is realy an

Re: [videoblogging] Micro$oft Vlogging style ON10.net

2006-03-24 Thread Michael Verdi

I think Josh noted how they embed the video - which seems to be the problem. I just tried this on my PC using the beta of IE 7 and it works great. Then tried it in Firefox and I have to wait for the entire video to load (without much indication of what's going on) before it will play.
Other than that - please make the pemalink more prominent. I had to hunt around for it (almost looks like you don't have them).-Verdi

We've counted today (since Dec 2004) 250,049 videos in the vlogosphere

we have, but I thought that was nice anyway. On to 1,000,000!
