smil does not let you add links on parts of video, only the entire video.

That depends a lot on how creative you get with it. :o)
If you use the a element on the video layer, then you can only make the

text in Quicktime SMIL is notoriously fickle (best use native Quicktime in
that case). But you can work with images-as-links in Quicktime SMIL which
works reasonably well. You can then use transparent or semi-tranparent
images to act as time-based hotspots in the video.

But really native Quicktime files are much more robust. SMIL is good
because it's easier to automate (since it's XML) and because it's free
(it's good if you can't/won't pay for eZedia). The observant reader will
notice that I use SMIL on my blog from time to time - that's because of
the automation. :o)

Adrian mentioned eZedia a coupel of times, but I want to echo him. It is
really eassy to use, so if you have $50 to spare it's a good buy for
anyone who wants to add any type of links to video. For what you want to
do you can get by using the free demo version (if you already have
Quicktime Pro), but you'll quickly find the demo limiting.

You can download the demo and buy the full version at URL:
http://www.ezedia.com/products/eZediaQTI/ - some video tutorials are
included in the download IIRC.

eZedia can handle everything described below. I've just included more
options for you.

If you're on a tight budget Quicktime text tracks are en option. If you're
on a Mac Textation (that Adrian mentioned) URL:
http://home.netvigator.com/~feelorium/feelorium/Textation/index.html is
a good way to make these tracks. If you're on a PC you can either write
them by hand using this tutorial URL:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/hreftracks.html These will turn
the entire video window into a link. If you want regular text with links I
made an old old tool at URL: http://www.solitude.dk/archives/QT-thingie/
(remember to read the instructions linked from the top).

2. However, because we can self-publish, Just Plain Folks can also put themselves in front of the camera and some of them will have a hook that draws us in and we'll watch them even if they aren't pretty. I hope that as a result we'll all subconsciously get used to the idea that you don't have to be gorgeous to be worth watching, and lookism will tone down in the general culture. After all, we already watch lots of famous people who aren't particularly attractive because they are instead funny or talented.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlog with html links?

2006-05-12 Thread David Meade

Yeah I love the eZedia program, I use it for all my videos.

The end of my videos has a single frame with my logo, url, cc license
info, and a comment button. Each is clickable and takes you to
the appropriate place.

The demo can do up to 5 items on a frame. I think my frame has 6
itmes :-P It's a cool little app and worth the purchase price if
you ask me. (If you want to see a simple example of what you can
do with it you can check out one of my videos as well.
Here's a random one:

on a Mac Textation (that Adrian mentioned) URL:http://home.netvigator.com/~feelorium/feelorium/Textation/index.html is
a good way to make these tracks. If you're on a PC you can either writethem by hand using this tutorial URL:http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/hreftracks.html

[videoblogging] Re: My video pre-reply

2006-05-12 Thread Chuck Olsen

Here's a video from the Blogumentary archives, dealing with gender representation in the
blogosphere. Pretty much every issue that pops up on this list has been hashed out before
with text blogs, and indeed other media. But, you know, it's good stuff to talk about, even
though I do wonder if anything new can be said.

Shannon and Adam, you guys are both brilliant freakoids. Y'all might like today's MN Story,
it's an interview with one of the dudes from NEGATIVLAND, the original (?) culture
jammers. They are all white men from the United States. Sorry.

[videoblogging] 70 female vloggers and counting

2006-05-12 Thread Zadi

Whew, okay. I just finished peaking under every rock I could think of
to find all the women videobloggers I could find and I came up with
around 70. I was actaully quite surprised - it never seemed like that
many - not that 70 is that many.

So, okay... I promised myself that I would give back (not that I'm
like out of it to be giving back - but you know what I mean) to the
vlogging community somehow. And I do like the idea of collaborating -
even though I'm often short on time. So in an attempt to bridge a
virtual gap of sorts I created this collective: http://vidlicious.com

I really want to see more women creating video. I want us to find ways
to work together. And I often like that we don't agree on things
because it keeps us on point and thinking and finding solutions.

This collective vlog is just one big link loving/video-making fest. So
please email me if you'd like to join. If you don't email me, I'll be
forced to spend another night sending out 70 individual emails asking
for support. I'm hoping it benefits us all as it continues to evolve.

Okay, I'll be waiting!

Alternate views on this would be valuable. The planning wiki is at:

and the roundtable is described at:

I'm for a lively discussion of differing views on the roundtable --
not just audience responses of alternative views. Being on stage
brings an authority that audience feedback tends to lack.

PS: And if you know of any female vlogger I missed on the list, email

[videoblogging] Re: PC People (warning: relevant product plug) Not exactly vlogging but

2006-05-12 Thread LeanBackVids.com

My only point is that most Internet users should be disallowing
incoming traffic on all ports. As soon as you open port 80 (http) on
a machine, it creates a point of entry for a hacker.

The problem is compounded by opening ports on a personal machine,
which most likely contains sensative data.

On a side note... If you are a Windows user, I highly recommend these
two free applications to improve your security...

AdAware (removes spyware)
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

AVG (anti-virus... DONT PAY FOR NORTON)
http://free.grisoft.com/

And of course, use Firefox and consider switching to a Mac. :)

This is totally off-topic, but my roommate's old G4 Mac is where we have the cable modem and wireless router hooked up for our apt. I noticed our dl speed had dropped significantly a few days ago, so I went into his room and checked his computer. Now, he only uses it for email and porn, and he rarely checks his email. His desktop was littered with .exe files for porn dialers and various other random terrible shit that accumulates when someone doesn't know what they're doing.
My question: is there a program like AVG (which I use and love), or something else you Mac people can recommend to clean out his computer? He already gave me the ok to get rid of everything on it. Keep in mind I am Mac-illiterate.

Hello Matt,(I might have misread what you wrote, but)While I agree with your assessment that Microsoft Windows is one big security risk, and that using it means that one should block all incoming ports just to be a bit safer... I do NOT agree that this should be done in general.
One of the things I've hatted the most, about today's ISP's, is that they do NOT allow you to become true node on the Internet. Being a true node on the Internet implies you can be both client and server. Which means that you need to allow incoming ports.

Anyhow, it's not exactly vlogging software but it makes it very, very easy for users to create and host a video web site right from their own computer. It takes care of the optimization,
transcoding, etc and turns your PC into a server of your video, photo and audio/podcast content. We are currently distributing for free. We're going to be adding
some hosted support in the future so it won't require an always- on connection. BTW, up-pipe limitations and firewall issues are handled quite nicely with some smart caching/proxying on the network end.
If you're interested, check it out at www.pixpo.com. I'd love to hear any feedback. Like I mentioned, it's not
exactly vlogging software at this point, but it may morph more in that direction as the product matures (more room for text, comments + better organization).

There still is a sense of humor--and I'm one of the ones that has it.

I'm another female who is inspired by this discussion rather than
humiliated or enflamed by it.

I think Josh has a lot of valid points--I agree with what he is
*thinking,* but I think he may not be getting it out/slash/across in
the greatest of ways.

Sex sells, sure--because men stare at the boobs--while women stare at
the price. That's why men as hosts of a product don't matter. ;)

That would be the best solution if he's running OS 9 but that's a
little drastic if he's running OS X. Just delete everything on the
desktop. Then check the movies, document pictures and music folders
and trash everything there too. But I'm guessing that almost
everything he has is on the desktop so cleaning that off would
probably do the trick.

Speakeasy does not block ports...
http://www.speakeasy.net/home/

I used to have 2 static IPs from them. One IP was used by my personal
firewall and blocked all incoming traffic (unless requested
internally). The other IP was a Debian Linux host running Apache,
MySQL and PHP.

Ultimately, I realized that it was much easier to pay Dreamhost
$8/month to for 1 terabyte of bandwidth. Log monitoring in the bash
shell will make your eyes bleed.

Speaking of Speakeasy, this is probably the sweetest bandwidth tester
I've ever seen...

One of the things I've hatted the most, about today's ISP's, is that

Windows is not like UNIX (Mac/Linux). A security flaw in an

   UNIX
on the other hand has a very robust permissions system that

Anyhow, it's not exactly vlogging software but it makes it very,
very easy for users to create and host a video web site right
   from
their own computer. It takes care of the optimization,
   transcoding,
etc and turns your PC into a server of your video, photo and
 audio/podcast content.

We are currently distributing for free. We're going to be adding
some hosted support in the future so it won't require an always-
   on
connection. BTW, up-pipe limitations and firewall issues are
   handled
quite nicely with some smart caching/proxying on the network
end.

If you're interested, check it out at www.pixpo.com.

I'd love to hear any feedback. Like I mentioned, it's not
   exactly
vlogging software at this point, but it may morph more in that
direction as the product matures (more room for text, comments +
 better organization).

Sorry for recommending the security freak approach...

The .exe files on the desktop are most likely not the cause. They are
probably just PC-based executable files and will do no harm to Mac OS X.

It sounds like you have an unwanted process (1 or more) running in the
background. The Activity Monitor app allows you see everything that is
running. I keep the activity app running in the background... only
because it is fun to watch the dock icon and having two (processor)
bars makes it even more entertaining.

Just go to Applications Utilities Activity Monitor

As for the fresh install, almost every OS has a noticeable boost in
performance if you've been running it for a while. Mac users like to
claim the easy install/uninstall by just dragging/dropping a single
icon, but in reality there are usually a lot more hidden files spread
across the system. Over time, it gets a little junky.

Still, UNIX (Mac/Linux) is much cleaner than the Windows OS.

Good luck

I have all sorts of incoming ports open to my network. My ISP at least is pretty good about that. The downside of course is that in addition to the NATing and Firewalling done on my router, I've got to keep good software firewalls on all the PCs at all times ... a small price to pay I guess.

Entertainment, idealism, dreams, horror.

Here's my list of best shows on TV now:

- Battlestar Galactica: Although sci-fi, it makes me cry every show
with it's realism.
- House: Clever wit and sarcasm... and I still can't believe that's
actually Hugh Laurie!
- Gilmore Girls: I completely identify with Rory Gilmore... yet

I only really enjoy stuff that brings out extreme emotions in me... I
watch these things to laugh, cry with pain and cry with happiness.

Interesting choices, Casey.

My favourite programmes at the moment on UK television have to be...

Doctor Who: David Tennant is brilliantly carrying on a tradition,
dating back to 1963. Like Billie Piper too. We've got the Cybermen
returning in the UK tomorrow.

Deal Or No Deal: A simple game, with a lot of drama attached. We
don't have to suffer Howie Mandel and 26 models though, we have Noel
Edmonds and 22 players, 1 picked at the beginning of each show.

I personally have written over 50 articles on television for an online
archive/magazine called Transdiffusion. The site is a wonderful
repository of information relating to television and radio, mainly in
the UK, but we have a growing international section, called Intertel.
We also blog on various aspects of broadcasting on the EMC Mediablog.
If anybody wants to check out the site, the link is

I also enjoy Food Network or Animal Planet, when

Shows I don't record, but always watch if I'm home

- 60 Minutes
- Washington Week
- Ellen
- Two and a Half Men

And, cyclically, when they are on: Top Chef,

I obviously watch a lot more TV than most of you,
but I think that it's a nice mix of drama, reality, documentary, news,
etc.

Also, I've noticed in adding all of the sites I've come across, a lot
of them have both atom feeds and feedburner feeds. This may not be
giving you a proper representation of who is subscribed to you if use
feedburner to look at your subscription stats - because someone may
have taken the default site feed. I noticed this was the same with my
site.

[videoblogging] Please help send me to vloggercon!

Hello group! This is Brett Gaylor - I have a videoblog at
www.etherworks.ca, and I run a non-profit website called Homeless
Nation. I'm writing in an attempt to get to Vloggercon to participate
in the political vlogging panel. I'm kicking in some of my own
money for the ticket, and so is my work, but we're still short a
lot. We're a non-profit and we try and sink all of our money into
staff, so we can't get me from Montreal to SF on our own. So I'm
hoping the community will help me out!

Ive made a video explaining what I'd like to do on the panel - it's available here

You'lll also find a link to my fundable.org site, where I'm trying to
raise the money. Last time I checked I was almost halfway there!

Just want to dredge out what you think of first when you think of TV

Arrogance, condescension, regurgitation.

And the thing that annoys me even more, is the number of amateurs
doing video podcast episodes and trying to emulate all three.

The only exception with TV, is some of the more recent
multi-protagonist long story arc drama series, which are great, as
they introduce complex characters and story lines, and actually
assume that we're intelligent enough to understand them.

 Richard

[videoblogging] a new way to promote your vlog

2006-05-12 Thread Amir Michail

Hi,

Do you think this method would be effective for vlog promotion?

Shattering the Self-Promotion Taboo
http://targetyournews.com/TargetYourNews.pdf

The corresponding service is fully functional and free:

http://targetyournews.com

It's sort of like reddit, but the submitter is responsible for
targeting his/her link to people who will probably like it.

To see how a particular link is targeted, click targeting. For
example, here is the targeting for the MobuzzTV vlog:

http://targetyournews.com/?cmd=targetingurlid=243029

Note how targeting URLs are used to suggest the vlog to people. For
example, the vlog is targeted to people who liked slashdot.org. Of
course, it's probably a good idea to add targeting URLs that
correspond to vlogs as well.

People who are targeted can click more like this or fewer like
this to build their interest profile. This in turn determines your
submission score. Careful targeting is important because your
submission score determines your submission's rank among personalized
recommendations for targeted people.

Now, perhaps you are involved with this vlog in some way or like it a
lot, so you would like to promote it as well. Moreover, you might
believe that you can do a better job targeting it so more interested
people will see it.

In that case, click on evolve to change its targeting, title, and/or
tags. Note that all instances of the link will remain in the system,
so in fact, many people could try to promote this particular paper in
different ways. Click family to see all instances of the link.

To receive personalized recommendations, take a look at the links
under My Targeted Links. If you would like to receive more
personalized recommendations, give your preferences for some of the
links under My Targeting Links.

Anyway, feel free to add and target your vlog. Other people may in
turn help you promote it.

Also, if you tell me of a good list of vlogs, I can enter them into
the system (though perhaps with no targeting) and then you could
evolve my entries.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Amir

I also enjoy Food Network or Animal Planet, when there is nothing
else on (I'm a TV junkie--it's on all the time, as I work at home, and
it keeps me company).

Shows I don't record, but always watch if I'm home when they are on:

 - 60 Minutes
 - Washington Week
 - Ellen
 - Two and a Half Men

And, cyclically, when they are on: Top Chef, Runway, and Food
Network's Next Star, The Apprentice

I obviously watch a lot more TV than most of you, but I think that
it's a nice mix of drama, reality, documentary, news, etc.

Re: [videoblogging] What is Your Definition of TV

2006-05-12 Thread Anne Walk

i don't watch tv at all anymore. i used to watch buffy but when it ended, i died a little inside. it was a communal activity. my daughters got me watching it and my best friend as well. he would watch at his house and every commercial, my phone would ring because he needed to discuss. it was fun.
i'm a major treckie. seen them all multiple times (except for enterprise. what the hell was that all about??)i used to watch six feet under and loved it.my favorite channel is showcase (canadian).
i used to watch trading spaces for vern. sigh. i miss vern.i still watch colbert, but only online now.love that quote duncan and it crosses over into every area. the technology for change is there. doesn't mean it will be used for change.

[videoblogging] Re: 70 female vloggers and counting

2006-05-12 Thread obreahny

hey Zadi,

My name is Obreahny O'Brien. I'm a 20 year old female college student
in the New York City area. I blog using words and videos on my website
http://collegewit.com

Friends sometimes contribute- however the other strongest contributor
is also a college female named Anjii; she's currently attending culinary
school in Baltimore.

I've been kind of delinquent in updating the videos sections b/c at
the end of the day, writing is more my passion, however i've been
getting video requests from our viewers so i'm going to get more on top
of that now that final exams are over.

The theme of my website is uncensored "random observations" as they
relate to everything from college students' love lives (or lack thereof
;) ) to internship woes and school.

I really like what you're putting together and it would be cool to
contribute.

Will be in touch

I'm going to have to call you on this.

The one to many distribution of television is not quickly
disappearing, and it is certainly not being replaced by a many to
many distribution system over IP.
Videoblogs (video podcasts, vodcasts etc.) are still one to many
distribution. From a distribution perspective, there's no real
difference between it and TV, except that TV is still better quality
visually, and being free over the airwaves, is a lot easier to
consume that anything over the Internet. (Especially if you're not a
white affluent male ;-) )

With the advent of P2P (BitTorrent, Kazaa etc.) there is an
opportunity to change the delivery infrastructure so that you can
perhaps download a video from multiple locations at once to speed
up delivery, but it is still one to many as a communications system.

What you're probably trying to say is that amateur video on the
Internet has the opportunity to create two way communication (not
distribution), as opposed to the old one way communication of TV.
However true two way ubiquity is still a long long long way off.

The fear of television argument is expecting the old model which
will soon not exist.

What?

Regards,
 Richard

[videoblogging] Re: Sexism, Exploitation and Golf

2006-05-12 Thread Toma

I'm one of those people who peer in from a (very) busy life now and
again... happened to see the original post by KillerB and was moved
deeply. Anne Walk also has a LOT to say about the issue, too. Way to
go, Anne! This is one bloke who listened intently to your entire last
video post on the issue.

The underlying truth of continuing horrendous suffrage of women
worldwide (and in western world in varying degrees of blatant
oppression). What I find interesting to do is compare the spirit that
oppresses women in the worldwide sex-slave trade (see
http://www.coe.int/T/E/human_rights/trafficking/ for one group aware
of it) to this golfing ***hole who hit the boards looking for his own
brand of slave. What's really the diff? Both trades oppress and
disregard the fundamental value of a human for their own selfish gain.

Just cos women raised on Glamour have a certain stockholm syndrome
with their captors doesn't make the hostage-taking right.

Anyways. Check my post - http://atomsound.blogspot.com/ - where I
weigh in through my Canon S2IS.

Cheers to those on the boards here who love liberty and are willing to
fight for (or at least talk about) it.

And to you blokes who don't give a crap about what a woman thinks...
psh.

[videoblogging] Re: What is Your Definition of TV

2006-05-12 Thread Brook Hinton

To me TV is really specifically a particular device - the CRT thing
that sits in a cabinet in my living room, now, after a gap of a few
years, hooked up to cable again.

What I THINK of when I think TV? Noise, cultural artifacts, sources
for collage/satire/other remediated explorations, a source generally.
A few series past and present I actually loved like the Prisoner, Twin
Peaks, My So Called Life, Arrested Development. A lot of crap high and
low brow with gems in there if you look, as with most things.

I don't really relate vlogs to TV. They seem more connected to cinema
than to TV for me - maybe because its a more focused experience - but
really video on the web is its own thing, and vlogs a whole other
thing connected to that.
