[videoblogging] Re: Apple TV vs. iPod/iPhone Recommendations?
Thanks, Markus, for your kind words. I'm glad my videos are providing some entertainment! I've yet to get up the nerve to do mostly narrated, camera-pointed-at-myself vlog posts, and still stick with simple montages. And I appreciate your note that it looks good on your monitor. Because I am using Apple TV specific settings for my enclosures right now, I have no idea how things are for those just watching on their computers like you. Steve, thanks for your comments. I did a test with 640x360, and while it ain't bad, it looks like most good videoblogs. The 1280x720 files I'm posting do look noticably better. Well, from a technical standpoint. My HD700 struggles in low light and I have a shaky hand. I didn't think about CPU load, though. I know HD Flash players can strain a machine, but do you get the same effect in QuickTime player or iTunes (specific to the video size)? And Jay, you're right, Apple is pushing specs in its own interests, not the creative community as a whole. I'm one of those vloggers who pushes my videos to a whole heap of video hosting sites in various formats in the hopes of reaching the most people. My question was specific to my feed enclosures, though, and whether I'm alienating too many folks with the 1280x720, 24fps MPEG-4 files I'm using now. Since I do post different versions of the same video, I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble to run a second feed (Apple TV HD and iPod/iPhone). Sounds like a lot of work, but no more work than uploading everything to a dozen different places! Ryan HawaiiVog http://www.hawaiivog.com
[videoblogging] Apple TV vs. iPod/iPhone Recommendations?
Aloha mai! Just got a blast from Apple on recommended settings for video podcasts to look good on the Apple TV as well as their portable devices. It got me to thinking what y'all might be using to hit the best sweet spot between Apple's obviously biased recommendations and greatest compatibility or usability out there. For example, I've been posting HD vlog entries at 720x1280, 24fps, 3000kbps, H.264/AAC in my feed, though the blog item itself definitely includes links to dozens of other versions (including the even more proprietary but darn good looking DiVX). Of course, these settings are Apple TV specific, and exclude 5th gen video iPods and iPhones. From the Apple TV e-mail, it looks like 640x360 is what they're recommending for the widescreen aspect for both Apple TV and iPods/iPhones, but... won't that look less clear than the full 720? Or is it possible that with the right settings, 640x360 would look passably good on the widest range of devices. And do these settings create specific headaches for non-Apple users? Or, at this point, can most users play with these MPEG-4 files? The Apple TV e-mail is below! -- Begin forwarded message -- Recommendations to help you create the best possible experience for users: 1. Apple TV viewers are immediately aware of video quality. If you encode your video podcast at 320x240, we strongly encourage you to increase the resolution to 640x480 or 640x360 (depending on the aspect ratio of your source files). When encoded well, video podcasts at this resolution look great on Apple TV and still play on iPhone and video-compatible iPods. To ensure compatibility, we recommend that you encode using QuickTime's Movie to iPod preset or Compressor's Apple Apple Devices H.264 for iPod video and iPhone 640x480 preset. 2. When you perform the final encode on your video, enable fast starting. Most recent versions of QuickTime enable this setting automatically. But it's easy to undo the setting by making changes to the file after the encode. If you do make a change after the encode, be sure to Save As again. 3. Apple TV displays a large version of the podcast art (the file referenced in the itunes:image tag). We recommend that you use a 600x600 square JPG or PNG file. 4. Several new introductory video tutorials have been developed for iTunes, including one for podcasts. If your web site offers how-to information for new podcast users, please consider linking to it.
Re: [videoblogging] Re: amateur review of the flip video camera
I was curious about the Flip Video as an cheap, easy option to let my kids do the video thing, but never got around to picking one up. Turns out waiting was a good strategy, as Facebook gave away a hundred of 'em last month and I won one. I just got it last night, and took it straight to the bon dance at my local church. No instructions, no practice. And I was impressed -- again remembering that it's a $130 gadget. Heck, its ability to capture ANYTHING at night was surprising. For a while I was flummoxed to not find a single administrative menu on the thing (I can't turn off the cheesy beeps)... but then I realized that's exactly why this might work for kids, grandma, or the wholly impatient YouTube fan itching to get SOMETHING online. The hardest part of getting started was getting the thing out of the darn molded plastic coffin it came in. The hardest part of using the videos it recorded was... well, using a Mac. It comes with stuff for Windows, but to use OSX video tools takes some hacking. More hacking than I had patience for. So I just ran the Flip Video software under Parallels. I used the Movie Mix tool, strung together 25 clips, and voila: http://www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/videoblog/archives/2007/08/bon_dance_by_fl.html Not sure if I'd have bought one (over the nearly comparably priced low-end Xacti, which has more features), but I love it given the price I paid! [videoblogging] Is LIVE! The Next Frontier?
Steve Garfield experimented with live vlogging with his Nokia phone earlier this month. Justin Kan of Justin.TV is walking around San Francisco with a camera strapped to his head and EVDO cards in his backpack for continuous live video. And last night, Chris Pirillo had Ustream.TV, Robert Scoble's Twitter might, and a blogger across the border to pull together a live report on the Mexico City Earthquake: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4502606569188610270hl=en Of course, folks were more excited by the technology than the earthquake... agog over the implications for news distribution and citizen journalism. From the energy that collided in Pirillo's show, it's chear the simmering potential is there. Scoble is going to do his own live-from-phone coverage of a conference next week. Periodic and archived video is vital -- after all, someone had to record Pirillo's live show to re-live it today! -- but it looks like pervasive live video, lifestreaming, whatever you want to call it, is here a lot sooner than most would've predicted. Any recommendations for videoblogs/vlogs/vidcasts/vodcasts/video podcasts that distribute HD content? Re: [videoblogging] more iPhones coming?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 The iPhone seems decicively a consumer product, not a business tool. RIM doesn't need to worry, and PalmOne only insofar as they've only briefly occupied the high-end consumer market. This really is an wide-screen video-capable iPod with a phone tacked onto it. They'll sell as many as they can, then put the screen/UI on a regular, high-capacity iPod. As for the carrier lock in, part of it is so that Apple (the hardware manufacturer) could have a little more say over the end-user experience than most manufacturers (Motorola, Samsung) have in working with providers (Sprint, Verizon). And also because some features required fundamental changes to the underlying system -- the non-linear voicemail setup, for example. Apple needed to work with at least one provider to develop the product, but wanted a partner that knew how to keep its yap shut. Doubt the iPhone could be so well hidden if they collaborated with several carriers. And, yes, one carrier increases the premium that can be charged for the device. There'll be competitive service and pricing... in two years. :) I imagine the iPhone would be good for consuming media, but I don't see much in the way of creating and sharing it, which is a pity. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Memorial Day Tribute
Here in Hawaii, one Buddhist sect has merged the traditional Japanese toro nagashi rites (lantern offerings) with the American Memorial Day observance, and of course incorporated many Hawaiian traditions as well. The dead are remembered -- ancestors, war dead, family members recently passed -- and are guided to the shore of salvation by paper lanterns bearing names and messages set adrift on the open ocean. Even off Waikiki, with loud tourists (who seem to confuse a spiritual ceremony with a beer bash) and a huge, huge, crowd, this event never ceases to touch me deeply. I vlogged it, and I'm inordinately pleased with how it turned out. For cryin' out loud, David, where exactly have I suggesting anything different? Hell, I was in fact asking, as the owner of the site, how to best properly present [my] work to my viewers. I didn't say, for example, Damn Microsoft for screwing us! I asked if it was just MSIE for Windows or if other browsers/platforms were affected. Seemed a pretty reasonably inquiry to me. And I don't think prefacing my question with yipe qualifies as coming crying to the list, either. Anyway. I guess the change will cause content providers to be deluged with complaints if they don't adjust their code... but I think a fair number of folks will continue to see the growing annoyances related to MSIE and find yet another excuse to migrate to another browser. Re: [videoblogging] the activex/eolas patent bug in Explorer
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 All righty then... a quick recap and a couple of my own questions. This affects MS Internet Explorer users only, Windows only, and apparently both IE6 (April 11 update) and IE7 beta (according to Microsoft) -- though not everyone using IE7 has seen it, and perhaps the jury's still out on IE7 final. Both Apple and Microsoft have posted information pages and sample code (including external Javascript files): http://developer.apple.com/internet/ieembedprep.html http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/author/dhtml/ov erview/activating_activex.asp Stressed is the fact that switching to JavaScript is only part of the solution -- the Javascript can't be part of the same page that calls it. Therefore, it seems that Josh's Embedthevideo.com (and thus Devlon's plugin) and the pop-up solution offered by FreeVlog don't solve the problem, per Michael Verdi's testing. But, Enric's vPIP WordPress plugin does seem to do the trick: http://wp-plugins.net/plugin/vPIP/ Okay. Now two questions, one philosophical and one a little more complicated. First, I'm guessing that some folks are seeing pop-up windows for the video as part of the solution (although again the JavaScript can't be in the HTML that draws the pop-up). But with all the mentions of folks who might browse with Javascript disabled... aren't we much more likely to come across people who have pop-ups disabled? Heck, people get pop-ups disabled without even asking these days. I can see why embedding video might not be someone's solution of choice (especially given this latest development), but maybe the popularity of pop-up windows is a bit iffy, too. Why not just point to another regular permalink-able web page? Now for my geeky question: I'm using MovableType, and not WordPress, for my vlog. Fortunately, I think, I built the embed code into my templates, and used the MTEntryExtended and MTEntryExcerpt to only hold URLs to the movie file, and the poster frame. I can see how it would be relatively straightforward to (1.) upload the external JavaScript file, and (2.) adjust the template code as shown on the Apple or Microsoft pages, dropping the URL for the movie file (MTEntryExtended) where specified (sample.mov). But... does anyone know if any of these Javascript-powered solution handles separately made/uploaded poster frames? If not, could they? And finally, if poster frame files are out, exactly what will these Javascript solutions show in the space before someone clicks to load an embedded video? - -- Ryan HawaiiVog.com -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: PGP Desktop 9.0.6 (Build 6060) Comment: http://www.lightfantastic.org/pgp.txt iQA/AwUBREJ9W8/o8udD/KcXEQL3VACfRGFaYaoR9j/lOvrlq0L8pMcTH4kAn0Jc hD/RUyxyrj7KPtAj2/EDTaGb =u+ak -END PGP SIGNATURE- Yahoo! On 4/16/06, David Meade [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: well pop-ups that pop-up because the user clicked a link wont be blocked, so we're ok there. Thanks, David. I hope this is the case. I've helped a fair number of people in a support environment where they don't get a pop-up they're expecting, but that's usually because the link is actually taking them to another page that's expected to automatically spawn a pop-up, which is then blocked by the default settings on their browser. I just think that overall, there's a suspicion or disdain of pop-ups in general, so I was wondering why they're so popular among vloggers. But actually, this is probably a separate question from the MSIE Active X thing. I'd imagine the Javascript thing can use custom poster frames no problem. The sample codes that Apple and Microsoft present seem to be customizable to the point where you can pass in additional variables to be incorporated into the page... but sadly, I'm pretty code illiterate. If anyone develops a variant that supports poster frames, do share! I just have a fear that poster frames can't actually be supported, because the expected behavior is for them to display in the page automatically as placeholders... and the issue with this MSIE thing is that it's requiring user action before anything loads. -- Ryan HawaiiVog.com Yahoo! And that's a good thing. No plans to yank cords, in any case. Whatever folks find the wiki useful for, I'm glad to host it. On the (audio) podcasting side, only a couple of obscure pages on iTunes and chapter marks is frequently referenced, but for those who are looking for it, I'm sure it's valuble. For vloggers, it's at least happily the home of videoblogger videoconference information... and of course the birthday list! Since so many of you have already helped build out the video side of the wiki, though, and since we had a recent spate of what camera do you use? posts, setting up pages for popular cameras with links and comments seemed to be the ideal application. The 43 Folders blog had an interesting response: http://www.43folders.com/2006/02/07/podfading/ And I think we can carry it over to videoblogs. Just as podcasters get grief for trying to re-do radio, I think a lot of videobloggers/video podcasters are being pigeonholed as trying to re-do TV. One one hand, those paradigms have merit, and definitely help folks new to podcasting/videoblogging get a handle on what we're doing. But I definitely don't think we're specifically trying to do the same old thing -- many of us just start with the conventions and formats because we're familiar with them, because some people expect them, and yes, some people like them. Re: [videoblogging] Would Tweaking for iPods Make Me Evil?
Aloha e Michael, The Freevlog site is an unmatched resource, to be sure. I point folks there myself. Gotta say, though, that the 3IVX stuff isn't something I'm comfortable with. Hence my specific question about what Quicktime Pro on a Mac can do for me, natively. Is the Movie to iPod (320x240) a bad deal, or too easy to not utilize? Or would the Movie to MPEG-4 option be better, more broadly compatible? I've read a lot about how the iPod preset does wonders for file size... but I'm curious if they break the embed/posterframe setup I'm currently using on my site. -- Ryan http://www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/videoblog Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Would Tweaking for iPods Make Me Evil?
Thanks, Michael. On 12/23/05, Verdi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This feature seems to be meant to be used to convert an already compressed quicktime movie to a format that is compatible with the iPod. This could be true. Hmm. I'm not working with DV, fortunately, just the MOV files native off my Panasonic Lumix digital camera, and yes, all my files are basic MOVs anyway. If and when I move to a more robust setup, though, this might be an important consideration. It's actually a fairly high bit-rate h.264 setting. Looks good but not particularly small file size. Good to know, but considering the MOVs I was generating were larger, I'm still happy. A 240x180 MOV using Sorenson that I've had up was 13MB. Exporting from the original, full size video to a 320x240 MP4 (Movie to iPod) got me 9MB. Smaller file, larger frame, crisper image... I'll take it. You can do that but there are lots of factors what will make or break compatibility. Of course. Ah well. You know what? I'm going ahead and exporting my MOVs to MP4s via the Movie to iPod preset. I'm posting to Blip.TV (might as well get back into playing there while I'm at it), and linking those in the feed for aggregators. However, if you visit the source blog, you can watch an embedded, basic MOV file (the original, just as it always was), and of course the poster frame is left alone, too. So the media in the feed is designed to favor iPods/iTunes (which is the software that hits the feed on my site the most anyway). I'm hoping folks without iPods/iTunes can still view them (provided they have the latest version of Quicktime). But if you need it the old way, it's still there on the site, like it always was. Yeah, I know, it's two versions of the same file (reminds me of podcasters who post MP3s, AACs, OOGs and WMVs!), and I might drop the MOVs eventually if the MP4s work out. But for now... I'm just thrilled to have my vlog entries work on my new iPod... Haven't told my wife yet, but that's okay... she's got one under the tree! Maybe the most compatible settings that work on the iPod and play in Quicktime 6 are the ones at Freevlog - use the iMovie tutorial at http://freevlog.org/#compress I'll have to give iMovie another chance, I guess. I got so used to plain cut-and-paste in Quicktime Pro on the PC that I actually felt iMovie was getting in my way! Again, I'm sure that'll change when I start working with DV, but for now, simple works. g -- Ryan http://www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/videoblog Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlogger gets resigned

Still, I remember the ripples in the podcast universe when the first podcaster was canned for his show (he was harassing people in a church, if I recall correctly), so to some extent it's probably noteworthy that a videoblog played a part in this fellow's termination. This isn't anywhere near relevant to what you're seeking, Mark, but it did get me to thinking about all the different services in place now that I've seen referred to as Flickr for Video. Mefeedia, Vimeo, and YouTube all seem to have been given that label by others, as well as Flickr itself, of course, wherein Caterina has mentioned (some time ago) wanting to add video support to their site. Seem to me that cool video site could have been Flickr's mindshare to lose. I hope it's high on their development wishlist. An interesting write-up on an interesting film: http://www.independentfilm.com/films/my-date-with-drew.shtml Here's the official site: http://www.mydatewithdrew.com/ I thought it might be of interest because of these comments from the IndependentFilm.com article: 'My Date With Drew' was shot with a Circuit City mini-DV camera, believe me, the camera was nothing special. I asked Brian how he handled sound. He said he really did only use the on board camera microphone. And he admitted that post production was very difficult to work around that. They edited the film in Final Cut Pro on a Powerbook... Initial offers from the major studios came in but they all pulled out at the last minute because no film has ever been created like this. This film is the first in a new class of documentaries and none of the studios knew how to release it. Do you market it as a comedy? Or a Documentary? So I'm thinking of just keeping a separate mobile vlog: http://vlog.textamerica.com/ But before settling on TA, I was wondering if other providers have leapfrogged them just yet. Maybe in another five years. I didn't say, but I vlogged! www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/videoblog/archives/2005/07/back_in_mac.htm l For very good quality and pretty big file sizes use the Compress movie for CD-ROM. This gets saved as a generic .MOV file. This is helpful. Like I said, I compress the hell out of my movies for the web (and my friends with slower connections), going Sorensen 3 at Low, scaling down to 240x180, 64 bits for audio, etc. I was just looking for how to get MOV files that were closest to the original MOV files that my camera made natively -- 320x240, 30fps, etc. I'll try the CD-ROM setting. This is probably too big for the web in my case, but good for archiving to CD (or now, DVD -- yay!). Question: Should I be using Sorensen 3? Or is MPEG-4 better for cross-platform availability (though wrapping it in a MOV file kind of kills that)? Or H.263? So many choices... the blessings and bane of videoblogging. H.264 video's look great if the original video is excellent quality and you dont mind the time it takes to export (forever on a G3 iMac 500Mhz!!!). And if you don't mind people not being able to see them (but they can hear them just fine!). I'm sure H.264 will rule the world, someday, but I'm not ready for it. It's too much codec for an amateur like me! PS. iMovie doesnt do Text very clearly so if you are gonna use text in a movie you should import as a picture from Photoshop or something like that. That's what I've been doing. QuickTime's text tracks are quite powerful for meta uses (I.e. captioning), but for just plain looking good, they leave a lot to be desired. My problem is, I have Photoshop for the PC but not the Mac. So I might have to start using iMovie's title features until I figure out Adobe's cross upgrade thing (if it even exists anymore). Michael Verdi wrote: Check out our tutorial on Freevlog. http://freevlog.org/#compress Select the Compress from iMovie video. I did! It advocated H.264 or MPEG-4, going down to 15fps and 600bits. I was trying to replicate my source MOV file settings, though. And here's something weird -- I did videos out of iMovie at 15fps and 30fps and found little different in the final file size... so my vlog entries are now 30fps, but still scaled down to 240x180. I love my Mac. My wife wants a Mini now. And I think she's going to get one. [videoblogging] Feedburner and iTMS

Because twice now my Feedburner feed has turned up in the iTMS in addition to my real feed, and I've had to ask that it be removed. I can't figure out who's sending in the Feedburner feed in the first place. [videoblogging] Mac Switch Question!
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 The good news is, I just switched from PC to the Mac, and I love it. The even better news, I can easily do all I used to do with QuickTime Pro for Windows, because the applications are essentially identical. However, as I posted earlier, I do want to explore what iMovie can do. I'm learning my way around its limitations, and like some of the things it does, and in particular I think I'd like what it'd do when I invest in a MiniDV camera. Here's my stupid question, though: What is a QuickTime Movie? Here's what I mean. With QuickTime Pro, I could open various MOV files my digital still camera created, cut and paste, and Save as Self-Contained. This gave me a big honkin' MOV file, but the closest thing to the original quality of the files off my camera. I'd then use the Export features and use Sorensen 3 and other settings I found online to make smaller ones for my vlog. So. Now I'm in iMovie. And I can see I can do the same export (i.e. Sharing) to choose the same Sorensen 3, frame-rate, and other settings. This makes my vlog-friendly file. But. How can I export my iMovie movie into a regular QuickTime file? That is, a file like the one QuickTime Pro makes automatically when I choose Save as Self-Contained? Some of my experiments have resulted in some weird results, including unintentional 'wide screen' proportions. What _are_ the Sharing/export settings in iMovie to make a basic QuickTime movie? Is it H.263? MPEG-4? Just Video? Sorry for the total newbie question. I've been away from Macs for too long!
