i would agree with schlomo that if someone doesn't want to be in a video it
should be taken down. But to make this happen it's important to actually say
where the video is and find out who has posted it!
The video certainly isn't on any of my sites :).. if it was it would be so
blurry and slow that no one would recognise themselves anyway ;)

Hi Duncan,
I saw the video about vlogeurope 2006 where somebody recorded while I was
confidentialy speaking is still online.

Do you usally recorderd when people don't know?

I think this is not correct because we where standing outside and we were
short but confidentialy speaking.
If you want recorded or make some question JUST ASK BEFORE .

You go around Europe talking about video, but I don't think really this is
the correct way to shot videos.

I don't care about what we were speaking, I say nothing wrong, maybe my
english not soo good but the way you did it is SHIT.
I also made a video about vlogeurope but not that kind, my camera was always
visible.

Please REMOVE that video or i will tell to blip.tv, is too much time is
online now.

[videoblogging] looking for fake videos

2007-05-15 Thread duncan
Hi all,

currently curating a selection for the pixelodeon
festival<http://pixelodeonfest.com/>with Mary Matthews and our theme
is 'faking it', or 'unreal tournament' ,
essentially videos that present themselves as real but are actually fiction,
playing with out idea of a contract between the viewer and maker of online
video (e.g. lonelygirl15)..
so any suggestions of the fakers to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ! or maybe
you've got a fake project you're making, what better way to unmask it than
at Pixelodeon <http://pixelodeonfest.com/>!

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlog Fade

2007-02-27 Thread duncan
I can't agree with this thread.
If you're focused on your stats or If you make some kind of regular show and
you're worried about losing viewers then yes maybe you should make some kind
of notice if you pause for a bit. But to expect everyone to know that you're
taking a break if you make some kind of personal blog/vlog? that's
ridiculous. surely the whole point of RSS is that when you make a new post
people get notified? how many people here visit a site to see if there are
new posts when nothing is coming up in your RSS reader? .. if a viewer
writes to a maker asking why there is no new post THAT is input, if the
viewer can't be bothered to ask why there is a pause why on earth should we
expect the maker to?

Re: [videoblogging] Re: VHS to my Handycam to my Mac

2006-05-20 Thread duncan

lets face it isn't the same quality as DV,
no, the vhs isn't the same quality, it's an analogue format. General advice Paul is that you should always try and digitize analogue material with the best analgoue to digital convertor you have (the bit that turns the wobbly video voltage signal into crisp on/off digital signal) and minimize the amount of information compression (
e.g. miniDV compresses less than MPEG). I don't know how bad your DV camera is?  But any prosumer camera will capture more information from the VHS than something that encodes in MPEG, and the more information you have the better you can work with it/recompress it afterwards.
If there is a better way, especially for mac I would like to hear it.
er...see my previous email.. that's why i wrote it for you!be welld -- http://29fragiledays.blogspot.com

the only problem with that paul is that you're losing a lot of quality on the way, alway best to start with the highest quality encoding you've got and miniDV is less compressed than MPEG2  -  plus you need to have a DVD recorder!

does your mini dv cam have an analogue video input? if it's a sony sometimes you need to turn off the 'DV to analogue out' before it will accept an analogue input.  just feed the video into it as if you're capturing a live feed. if you're using  Final Cut Pro you'll need to set your device control to 'non-controllable device' and then use capture now.

Re: [videoblogging] What is Your Definition of TV

2006-05-12 Thread duncan

it's interesting that the programmes people are listing are all drama
and/or gameshows (i'm including antiques roadshow in that category;)

no one listed any documentary or 'life' shows (news doesn't count for
now ;) ?. .. and yet so many videoblogs fall into that category.. so
this makes me interested in the cultural situation, there is a huge
amount of amazing and creative factual television on terrestrial tv
over here .. horizon, panet earth, road to guantanamo, storyville,
...the list goes on...
how does this compare in other videobloggers countries? because when i
think of 'television' I always think of Ed Murrow when he said -
"This instrument can teach, it can illuminate, yes and it can even
inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are
determined to use it to those ends. There is great decisive battle to
be fought against ignorance, intolerance and indifference"

I'm going to bite my tongue over the the bit about the 'assumed "contract" between the blogger and the audience', the thing about this discussion that is weirding me out is the talk of 'community', yes the people on the list consider themselves part of some specific 'videoblogging' community, but that doesn't mean everyone who is posting video on their blogger accounts should feel part of it  ( I know I feel less and less part of it by the day!). Kevin's video was brought to the group my someone else, not by Kevin.
'But I
am thankful for my vlog friends, many I've met in person which

Re: [videoblogging] Embed vs. Pop-Up

2006-04-17 Thread duncan

i'm a little confused by pop-up blocking.. i use firefox (er.. 1.5.0.2 i think?) on OSX 10.4,) and i have 'block pop-ups' ticked.. But i can look at michael's pop-ups and my own without being asked to 'allow' it.. hwo much does this vary across different browsers?
Funnily enough this thread has sent me back to using pop-ups after trying out embedded video for a while.. my personal reasons being - 1. i like to have lots of small thumbnails on my main page, for me this is to make it clear that my videoblog is about the flow of content, rather than the 'current' video.. and also my most recent videos aren't very interesting on their own! ;)
2. i like the independence of a pop-up window for the video, it makes it like a little polaroid for me, somehow it makes it more 'physical'.. but obviously i'm not expecting many other people to agree with me on this!. it also lets me play with aspect ratios and negative space on the viewers desktop.

Re: [videoblogging] myspace revisited

2006-03-06 Thread duncan

question to you Duncan:
would you want your work to live on these sites rather than your
blog...or is it just another place to live?

Jayhmm.. interesting idea.. 'where does my work live?', in some ways i'd like to think that each of my films stands on its own, although in reality only a few do.  i guess once i publish i'm happy for them to live anywhere (as long as i get some control of viewing size ;) but that's from another debate!).
my work hasn't ever become 'viral' as such but now and again i do find it taking on a life of it's own that i wouldn't have expected. for example recently one of my films turned up on a christian blog and was being used to start a debate about the meaning of friendship. CBC in Canada have just purchased some of my films for broadcast, still not sure how happy i am about that but i guess it's just another life for them (and it helps pay for some equipment + food!).. originally i was a bit more hard-nosed about it and i put everything on ourmedia or blip and set up the feed and site myself. now i'm putting stuff all over the place, youtube, myspace etc etc.
When i started doing this the idea was about 'showing', i wanted to document things and share them with people, RSS and Fireant et al made this easy and help create a working system, i think myspace does a similar thing, it's a different social network though,  via fireant i was engaging with people who were doing the same already (
i.e. other videobloggers) , with myspace i'm seeing an audience who aren't, maybe seeing this stuff will inspire them to?so where does my work live? maybe my question is 'where does my work come alive?'.. the only answer i think i have right now is anywhere but on my own computer.
be welld(p.s. also, if anyone is wondering why my blogspot has been so quiet recently it's because my camera is in the repair shop, although i think i might start some revlogging soon to keep the flow going)

[videoblogging] myspace revisited

2006-03-05 Thread duncan

the whole myspace debate got me into exploring that world.. the most interesting thing i've seen has been people posting videos (usually via youtube) in their 'about me' section.  it reminds me of the way people in this group have talked about video as being a great portal into lives/cultures/languages that you know nothing about.
also for those only interested in viewer numbers, the videos i've had posted on myspace for about a week have had approx 10 times the views and comments that my normal videoblog would receive in months  (both of these figures are fairly low it has to be said, but the comparison is interesting.)

It goes with saying that if you post anything under the Creative Commons License anyway it is quite similar to the BBC license, don't we remix stuff that other people have shot before, same thing, yes?
no.. it's quite different.. with the creative commons licenses that most people use (attribution- non comercial - sharealike) i have to say where i got the content from, not make any money from using it, and then distribute it with the same creative commons license.
The BBC license agreement means they CAN use it commercially, they can then apply whatever rights they see fit to it and re-distribute it under whatever kind of license they see fit.

Re: [videoblogging] MS YES charity project.

2006-02-24 Thread duncan

The synopsis is this, 30 seconds of symptoms, from basics to high level "let's call the doctor," kinda HELP!  to be played out by the filmmaker and one other(a friend, a relative for instance)
You have two peices of dialogue the person inflicting the pain, the other will ask, "MS" then the filmmaker will answer, "Yes!!"  Then I will collate all the video and put it into a big collaboration and host it on one site, for as long as possible.
how strict is this guide?do all the videos have to follow this pattern? e.g. does every video have to cover lots of symptoms? or maybe just one? and does the text need to be spoken?
Methinks it might raise more awareness if you have a variety of approaches to presenting this idea.just a thought.. great project thoughbe welld -- http://29fragiledays.blogspot.com >http://www.kleindesign.co.uk

Re: [videoblogging] Re: accurate count of viewers per episode

2006-01-21 Thread duncan

there was something someone suggested ages ago (i think it may have been andreas),quicktime allows you to embed linked content into a movie..  so you could place an invisible image near the end of your movie, one that has to be downloaded from your site. the amount of hits for that image file should roughly equal how many times your movie has been watched.  the viewer has to be online when they watch the film for it to register a hit... i also think there may be some ethical issues with this ;)

one other method you might want to look at is the mike figgis 'bicycle wheel' mount, gives a really different feel to a steadycam and can lead you to some great camera movements you may not have thought of before.. now known as the 'fig rig' it seems
http://www.dvguru.com/2005/12/06/camera-support-the-fig-rig/>you can make them fairly easily and there seem to be quite a few 'how-tos' if you look around.

AFAIK final cut pro doesn't support networked rendering at present. One workaround would be to put the project file in a shared folder, open it on all the machines you can network together and render different sections on each machine, then export each section at full resolution and recombine them.

2006-01-16 Thread duncan

i'd agree with josh/andreas that over 3 mins is often too much,  i don't think this is directly related to my attention span (e.g. i'm a big tarkovsky fan), but purely due to the fact that i'm usually at my computer and multitasking when i watch them, and often have lots of them to watch!!
in terms of file size i guess i'm still pretty old school, i feel bad if i post a video over 5mb!, but saying that i often get annoyed with people making huge files for stuff that doesn;t contain much visual information, what is all filesize used for?  it just clogs up my fireant queue (although now the mac version has browsing things could be getting better for me !! )

[videoblogging] quoting, tagging and smallest narrative elements

2006-01-06 Thread duncan

so the thought that has been keeping me up recently is about tagging sections of video. I've been playing with the korsakov system recently http://www.korsakow.com/ksy/index.html
> developed by Florian Thalhofer http://www.thalhofer.com/> for building non-linear films and he talks about the idea of SNEs (smallest narrative elements), now these can be stills, sections of film, audio, basically the minimum amount of something that contributes to the narrative.
so how does this relate to vlogging? well.. is there a way to tag sections of a video, mefeedia had a quoting system (has that disappeared Peter?), how would you add tags to this? or maybe there is a better way.. i don;t know.. but i like the idea of being able to subscribe to a series of tags in
del.icio.us (or equivalent), say 'rain' and 'beauty', and then getting to watch a generative film about beauty and rain. the reason i think tagging sections is great is that the  film that gets compiled is continous, a fireant edit so to speak, without the credits inbetween each clip, and without the associated narrative of the film the section came from. does this make sense? i guess i'm asking for both technical and theoretical input or ideas here.. there's definitely more to this idea than i can think of !

Re: [videoblogging] Sound editor features (was Re: New poll for videoblogging)

2005-12-10 Thread duncan

i've messed around with audacity a bit and these are the features
that i miss (compared to my usual workhorse Pro Tools and my sometimes
friend Logic).. i'll try and translate them into video related ideas

- no good region list , like your clip bin in iMovie or Premiere, this
would let you mark/name and store sections of audio for later use
- no automation for FX, e.g. you can't have the amount of delay or eq vary over time in a single audio section.
- no ability to import a movie and work your sound in sync.
- no bus options, e.g. this would allow you to group a selection of tracks together and apply the same eq to all of them.

maybe some of these features are tucked away and i haven't found them.
I admit that most of these features are only relevant if you want to
work in detail on your sound but it might help you think about the
possibilities that are out there. -- http://29fragiledays.blogspot.com >

Re: [videoblogging] my video got taken off archive

2005-11-30 Thread duncan

usually i stay out of these talks these days but this one...

Most can not be broadcast on community TV because they
continually use copyrighted content (music) in their productions.
That is bad teaching, not a bad law
I don't know about that.  Have you ever taught a video
class?  Teaching the medium to either filmmakers or musicians
becomes prohibitive without mixing up existing materials.
I suffer the same problems as Adrian (plus I teach video classes regularly)...
-but in terms of working creatively I've never found it prohibitive,
... sampling of other material is one method, but not using it doesn't
= prohibition of creative ideas.
On my vlog i've still managed to never use copyrighted music, never
used copyrighted images ( and aside from Creative Commons material in
my revlog), never used video material that i didn't record.

Re: [videoblogging] creating del.icio.us tags with posts

2005-11-13 Thread duncan speakman

I actually keep the links in the text of the post and avoid creating listof tags whenever I can.

this is a much better idea! .. i guess i forgot about that whole
hypertext thing people were talking about last century, whoops ,
:)   (but then again i'm still trying to find an intuitive
way of doing hypervideo, i know it's out there somewhere, adrian miles
http://hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vlog/> keep pushing for it at
least, and lev manovich http://manovich.net>is always worth
a browse )
 Take this entry: http://www.solitude.dk/archives/20051105-2354/
 >Both links ("teletext" and "philosopher") are tag links pointing to thetags "Teletext" and "Kierkegaard" respectively.
oh you're such a tease, how could I not go and look at a post that contains both 'teletext' AND 'kierkegaard' in one entry!

i think i've got my head round it a bit more now.
.. thanks Josh/Andreas, always good to learn stuff!
And you're right andreas.. it's not about 'gaming the system'..
s i think i'll keep technorati as my 'content' tagging system +
keep delicious personal!
the wikipedia thing sound sensible, previously i've just been making
links to articles from the text of my posts, making them tags would
seem to kill 2 birds with 1 stone (has that _expression_ been declared
un-pc yet? just checking!)

ho-hum,  now i just need to finish my speech + image recognition
system that can watch my videos and automatically decide what tags to
write..anyone got  MITs phone number?

Technorati should notice the tag regardless of where the URL points.
It should be fine to use wikipedia links as tags since the URL
structure is the same as that of a "tag space". In fact, the wikipedia
example is given in the description of relTag on the Microformats
wiki.

Re: [videoblogging] creating del.icio.us tags with posts

2005-11-13 Thread duncan speakman

i don't quite understand the tagging thing yet, when you say
'open tagging spec' why is technorati more open than del.icio.us
?  Is this a standards thing between the two that technorati is
winning?

at the moment I've just been using technorati tags on my posts and i
figured i'd see if i could stick del. ones on in the same way.
yes on the whole,i've just started to use del. a bit more recently and
decided that it would be worth tagging my stuff based on it's content..

Wouldn't that be better accomplished using an open tagging spec like
Tachnorati's.
That way your tags are more likely to be picked up and spread aroun
the web rather than confined in Delicious.

Lets take a look again at your original blab, which I would call very patronizing:
"a
rocketboom clone? ..erm... you know.. call me crazy but i'm sure i've
seen casual presenters sitting there telling us about stuff with a cue
sheet in their hand before somewhere, hmm.. i think it might have been
called television. rocketboom have
a style all of their own, but they certainly didn't create that visual
presentation format... any 'trendy' shows on Channel 4 (uk), MTV et al
from the late 80s and early nineties... "
ok andrew, this is getting silly, now you're getting into digging and
rewinding? my original statement was a comment about the whole 'this is
a rocketboom clone' idea which keeps floating around.. it was targeted
at no one in particular, referenced no-ones knowledge level and most
importantly contained both a compliment and a statement which clarified
what i was talking about , i.e. 'visual presentation format'.  I
really don't understand why you are being so defensive about this?
surely 'you' are aware that rocketboom is influenced by televisual
presentation styles, that is one of the reasons for it's success,
people get the irony and humour because of its references to other
media.

If you don't see anything, it just seems like you may be missing some of the tools needed to be able to see.

ok i have to admit i don't understand this statement. sorry

i know a fair amount about new media.
 I
would start by having a look at the blog format and asking yourself how
blogging is different from writing for a newspaper.  Would you say
the Boing Boing is just doing the same thing as the New York Times?
diid you actually read my previous post? i said (and now say for the
final time) i was referring to VISUAL STYLE AND CONTENT ONLY, not
delivery medium, not external context, not distribution..etc etc
etc,
Referencing BoingBoing is a poorly thought example when we're talking
about visual style and content. BB has text and image on its page, but
that text contains (visible) hypertext links, there are images in full
colour and some animated adverts, none of which is seen in the New York
Times, what is in the visual content of Rocketboom videos that isn't on
television?
 Or,
if you are like most personal videobloggers, ask yourself 'how is a
blogging different than a writing a personal diary?"Once
you mull that over for awhile, you may be more prepared to start
considering how video on a blog is different than video on a TV. That's
just one angle, but it may be a good starting point.
leave it out andrew, if you want a sensible and educated debate i'm all
up for it, but please make sure you actually read and understand the
points i made before coming back with the usual 'how video on a blog is
different', that hasn't ever been my point.
 It
may be important to take into consideration not only how they are
different, but how each platform informs the content as well.

a rocketboom clone? ..erm... you know.. call me crazy but i'm sure i've
seen casual presenters sitting there telling us about stuff with a cue

called television.
rocketboom have a style all of their own, but they certainly didn't
create that visual presentation format... any 'trendy' shows on Channel

Re: [videoblogging] logic in DVD creation?

2005-10-16 Thread duncan speakman

- to figure out how to create a DVD that uses
some sort of logic for determining what to play next.
do you mean it works out what to play based on previous user input? (or
maybe by what they have already seen? DVD Studio Pro lets you work with
some fairly simple programming (i.e. variables) to do this, but it is
has some annoying limits on how many variables you can use this
kind of programming can appear quite complicated if you haven;t used
things like  variables before though.

If you're just talking about a route through a flow chart that is
decided at thhe beginning of the journey it also lets you create
'stories' pretty simply, just select the series of clips you want to
play and tell the story what to show once it's finished (e.g. the
original menu)

trying to edit MPEG files directly (in general most people seem to be
converting them to DV files before editing.. this can be done using

use a Canon Ixus that lets me shoot at 60fps (although the process to
get it into FCP at 60fps is not so straightforward) .. I know all the
ixus range do it but i was just wondering if anyone owns any other
makes that do it (either DV or stills camera)

(p.s. i think in the US the ixus range is called Powershot SD or
something.. they are the tiny ones that look like a silver brick)

Ok, here's the deal.  You can set up a sequence preset that matchesyour source video so that you can edit without rendering.  Thatsequence preset can be saved and even set as default if you want sothat every time you make a new sequence it's this custom thing you
set up.  There are a couple of problems.  As Ryanne mentioned, it hasto be exact - fps, codec, codec quality, pixel aspect ratio, etc etc.or you'll have to render.  Another problem that we've seen, at least
with mpeg4 video, is crazy and annoying playback problems, ie videowon't update but sound plays, random green blocks, and more.  Itseems to just be a display problem but it makes editing a pain in theass.  As far as I know, making a sequence preset works in all
versions of FCP as long as it supports the codec you're working with.So the Compressor droplet:If you open up Compressor (I've tested this on version 1 & 2) andclick the presets button you can create a QuickTime preset that
matches the default DV sequence preset in FCP.  Once you've createdthat, there is a button to click that will turn it into a"droplet" (a mini application) that you can save wherever you'dlike.  Then you can take your non-DV clips and just drop a whole
bunch of them on the droplet and it will launch the Batch Monitor andtranscode everything to DV.  Then you can import those files and editin FCP without rendering.  When you start with small mpeg 4 clips, convert to DV, edit, recompress to mpeg4 again (at a decent bit rate
- 700kbits/sec +) you will notice very little difference from theoriginal clips. So here are the settings:Encoder Tab:File Format: QuickTime MovieVideo Settings:Compression Type: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

That's all there is to it! :)  Of course this will be in the bookwith lots of pretty screen shots.BTW, I've tested this with system 10.3, QT 6, FCP 4 & 4.5, Compressor 1System 10.4, QT 7, FCP 4.5

Is there an option in final cut pro that allows you to match the
timeline presets with the codec of the videos you want to edit?
Or do you just have to do it manually in order to not have to render?

I have a Sony dsc-t7 digital camera that also shoots video and I'd like
to edit the videos in fcp.  The problem is that fcp tells me I
need to render the clips even though I've matched the codec/video and
timeline settings as closely as possible...
Any ideas why this is happening?

Maybe this feature exists and I just dont know about it.

Figuring this out would help this long time lurker / irregular poster!
