I actually keep the links in the text of the post and avoid creating listof tags whenever I can.

this is a much better idea! .. i guess i forgot about that whole
hypertext thing people were talking about last century, whoops ,
:)   (but then again i'm still trying to find an intuitive
way of doing hypervideo, i know it's out there somewhere, adrian miles
http://hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vlog/> keep pushing for it at
least, and lev manovich http://manovich.net>is always worth
a browse )
 Take this entry: http://www.solitude.dk/archives/20051105-2354/
 >Both links ("teletext" and "philosopher") are tag links pointing to thetags "Teletext" and "Kierkegaard" respectively.
oh you're such a tease, how could I not go and look at a post that contains both 'teletext' AND 'kierkegaard' in one entry!

And you're right andreas.. it's not about 'gaming the system'..

keep delicious personal!
the wikipedia thing sound sensible, previously i've just been making
links to articles from the text of my posts, making them tags would
seem to kill 2 birds with 1 stone (has that _expression_ been declared
un-pc yet? just checking!)

ho-hum,  now i just need to finish my speech + image recognition
system that can watch my videos and automatically decide what tags to
write..anyone got  MITs phone number?

Technorati should notice the tag regardless of where the URL points.
It should be fine to use wikipedia links as tags since the URL
structure is the same as that of a "tag space". In fact, the wikipedia
example is given in the description of relTag on the Microformats
wiki.

i don't quite understand the tagging thing yet, when you say
'open tagging spec' why is technorati more open than del.icio.us
?  Is this a standards thing between the two that technorati is
winning?

at the moment I've just been using technorati tags on my posts and i
figured i'd see if i could stick del. ones on in the same way.
yes on the whole,i've just started to use del. a bit more recently and
decided that it would be worth tagging my stuff based on it's content..

Wouldn't that be better accomplished using an open tagging spec like
Tachnorati's.
That way your tags are more likely to be picked up and spread aroun
the web rather than confined in Delicious.

Lets take a look again at your original blab, which I would call very patronizing:
"a
rocketboom clone? ..erm... you know.. call me crazy but i'm sure i've
seen casual presenters sitting there telling us about stuff with a cue
sheet in their hand before somewhere, hmm.. i think it might have been
called television. rocketboom have
a style all of their own, but they certainly didn't create that visual
presentation format... any 'trendy' shows on Channel 4 (uk), MTV et al
from the late 80s and early nineties... "
ok andrew, this is getting silly, now you're getting into digging and
rewinding? my original statement was a comment about the whole 'this is
a rocketboom clone' idea which keeps floating around.. it was targeted
at no one in particular, referenced no-ones knowledge level and most
importantly contained both a compliment and a statement which clarified
what i was talking about , i.e. 'visual presentation format'.  I
really don't understand why you are being so defensive about this?
surely 'you' are aware that rocketboom is influenced by televisual
presentation styles, that is one of the reasons for it's success,
people get the irony and humour because of its references to other
media.

If you don't see anything, it just seems like you may be missing some of the tools needed to be able to see.

ok i have to admit i don't understand this statement. sorry

i know a fair amount about new media.
 I
would start by having a look at the blog format and asking yourself how
blogging is different from writing for a newspaper.  Would you say
the Boing Boing is just doing the same thing as the New York Times?
diid you actually read my previous post? i said (and now say for the
final time) i was referring to VISUAL STYLE AND CONTENT ONLY, not
delivery medium, not external context, not distribution..etc etc
etc,
Referencing BoingBoing is a poorly thought example when we're talking
about visual style and content. BB has text and image on its page, but
that text contains (visible) hypertext links, there are images in full
colour and some animated adverts, none of which is seen in the New York
Times, what is in the visual content of Rocketboom videos that isn't on
television?
 Or,
if you are like most personal videobloggers, ask yourself 'how is a
blogging different than a writing a personal diary?"Once
you mull that over for awhile, you may be more prepared to start
considering how video on a blog is different than video on a TV. That's
just one angle, but it may be a good starting point.
leave it out andrew, if you want a sensible and educated debate i'm all
up for it, but please make sure you actually read and understand the
points i made before coming back with the usual 'how video on a blog is
different', that hasn't ever been my point.
 It
may be important to take into consideration not only how they are
different, but how each platform informs the content as well.

Re: [videoblogging] logic in DVD creation?

2005-10-16 Thread duncan speakman

- to figure out how to create a DVD that uses
some sort of logic for determining what to play next.
do you mean it works out what to play based on previous user input? (or
maybe by what they have already seen? DVD Studio Pro lets you work with
some fairly simple programming (i.e. variables) to do this, but it is
has some annoying limits on how many variables you can use this
kind of programming can appear quite complicated if you haven;t used
things like  variables before though.

If you're just talking about a route through a flow chart that is
decided at thhe beginning of the journey it also lets you create
'stories' pretty simply, just select the series of clips you want to
play and tell the story what to show once it's finished (e.g. the
original menu)

converting them to DV files before editing.. this can be done using

i don;t want to sound like too much of a hippy here.. we all need to
put food on a table somewhere, (be it our own.. or someone we feel
needs it..) ..
i work creatively as often as possible.. sometimes for money, sometimes
in exhange for things, and sometimes just because there something i
want to say.

are you using flashMX? you can just place them one after the other in
the timeline..it's pretty seamless but probably worth doing it on a
black frame or something similar just to be sure! viewers won't notice
anything apart from maybe a small glitch!

Re: [videoblogging] Huge file compression issues...

2005-08-08 Thread duncan speakman

are you taking the file straight into flash or compressing it before
you import it?
I used to get this problem all the time on OS9 flash when importing
movies (it seemed to get solved on OSX). One solution i used to use
was to export my full res movie (e.g. out of Final Cut Pro)  but small
screen size (e.g. codec was set to DV-PAL but the size was set to
320x240 ).  Then when I imported into flash I made sure the scale
setting was at 100%.
The quality didn't seem *quite* as good as taking it in at full size
and shrinking it in Flash, but at least it worked!!

The other solution is to break the movie into smaller chunks for the
compression and then chain them together inside the flash movie.

hope this helps.

then i guess it wasn;t such a classic CD!!
i know what you're getting at markus, but some stuff deserves repeated
listening/watching,
i've watched some vlogs more than once, and i think some of them have
left such a lasting impression that i hope i will return to them in
the future.
For me, great works in any medium can give you a feeling or an
experience that is completely unique, and that is worth going through
again.
One major risk with the amount (explosion?) of stuff being created at
the moment is that it all becomes too disposable, and we rush on to
the next thing, never giving things enought time to grow on us.. never
letting stuff breathe,

actually while i've been posting very few videos lately i have been
delving back into my (ahem..) interactive video roots... i've been
looking at what possibilities MAX/MSP/Jitter can offer to vlogs.. i
haven't updated my copy for a year or so but AFAIK you still can;t
make web apps with MAX, although you can now make cross-platform
stuff.. we'll see.. it does offer some great possibilites for creating
authored movies though..

Re: [videoblogging] Pro/semi-pro quality cameras?

2005-08-02 Thread duncan speakman

ok to take the step upwards these are the elements i would suggest in
terms of looking at equipment..

audio-
make sure the camera has XLR (the three pin sockets) and can generate
phantom power. That way you can upgrade to a more professional
microphone when you feel like it. There are some good cheap
directional mics out there (often referred to as 'shotgun' mics)..
Beyerdynamic ME66 is pretty good, not sure how much they are in the
states but you get them here for around £160.
GET A GOOD WINDSHIELD.. a full Rycote mount is very expensive and
takes up a lot of space for the 'journalist on the street'... have a
look at something like the Rycote Softie.. will fit over most shotgun
mics and retails here for about £130.

visuals-
ok.. so here's the things that i think raise a camera above standard

ND filters (neutral density ) - you can get these seperately but
having them built in is a god-send, basically they take down the
overall light level , VERY useful if you're shooting in daylight. I
think a lot of the Sony prosumer range have them (e.g. PD170 etc)

Manual exposure control with F-stops - this means that if you start
getting fancy you can buy yourself a little photographic light meter
and set good exposure levels.

Focus ring that stops!! - one of the most annoying things for me on a
lot of DV cameras is that the focus ring has an infinite spin..i.e
turning it round continually changes the focus.. there is no fixed
short/long focus points. This means you can't ever really do great
focus pulls with ease, and you never really get a 'feel' for adjusting
the focus quickly, which is really needed if you're shooting in a
hurry.

Changeable lenses - the biggest flaw of the Sony range in my opinion..
i think most of the larger Canons have the option to fix different
lenses on, the XL-2 fits any 35mm lense i think if you buy the
adaptor.

I'd also agree with Chris that the look of the camera is important..
larger cameras still 'impress' people more.. although this may change
as news reporters use smaller and smaller cameras.. look for something
that has enough weight so you can hold it steady and comfortably for
long periods of time..
Oh, and one last thing NEVER buy a camera where the tape loading
slot is covered by the tripod attachment.. some of the small models
have a bottom loading slot.. changing a tape mid tripod shoot? you've
got to take the whole thing off.. very likely you'll loose the
position the camera was in!!

there's lots of different makes out there.. the features i've
mentioned should be founf on many of the mid-range models (i.e. around
the $1500 - $3000 mark)

hope this was of some help!
(and there's me making on my vlogs a little canon ixus!! pah!)

Re: [videoblogging] Vlogme 05

2005-07-24 Thread duncan speakman

hmmm.. not wanting to piss on anyones fire but this seems like a bit
of a redundant idea...

the original dogme manifesto was partly about getting away from the
styles of film-making predominant in hollywood, and bringing some
energy back into the filmic form (there was more to it of course. but
you get the gist) ..
so two things spring to my mind...
1. vlogs haven;t fallen into any kind of style or formula that you can
push or revolt against
2. if there is a common thread out there it is a style that already
sits in the dogme frame, i.e. no special lighting, all handheld,  no
post production.. etc etc.  SO just using a variation on the original
dogme vow is like saying.. ok everyone.. do what you are already
doing,

a dogme style manifesto for vlogging would need to look at established
vlog formulas and work out ways to disrupt them.. i don;t have the
answers.. but i do think it;s very hard to react against something
that hasn;t really formed yet?

this may be true... but the medium of videoblogs influences the work
that i create, i would not make the same kind of pieces for television
or video installation, just as i would not create the same picture
using oils as i would using watercolours,
it is a blank canvas, but is a very specific kind of canvas,
and as usual (for me!) i would refer it all to McLuhan's most
misunderstood quote 'the medium is the message'

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlogs As Art

oh.. an interesting topic..  for me the quality that sets vlogs
apart is the 'single viewer' idea..  i try to approach mine like those
mini-polaroid pictures (the credit card size ones).. i like the sense
of intimacy that a 320x240 image brings (or other aspect rations..
quicktime lets me make videos in a portrait aspect ration and not
leave any dead space my videos are always made with the intention of
only being seen by one person at a time.

ok vloggercon... i think once again you're making it all really US
centric.. i don;t mind having the conference in new york or LA, but
making it such short notice isn;t great... it's not cheap to get to
the US in the fall , and even harder to save/raise money in that
amount of time.. go ahead and do it sooner if you like.. but i think
you'll just be cutting off the potential of getting different people
from different cultures involved this cult may be spreading very
quickly in the US but the pick up is a lot slower everywhere else..
waiting till january will give it more chance to spread/develop ..
forget about being 'squished' ... you lot meeting earlier won;t help
anyone else in the world getting squished.. it will just increase the
divide.

be well all
