Noticed this is https://github.com/vim/vim/issues/6070.

I tried to run the test with different TERM (xterm,
rxvt-unicode-256color, tmux-256color) settings but no success.

Kitty is not available here. But to be honest, we shouldn't need a
special terminal emulator to run this test, though.

Well 8.1.1714 built fine. But there was no change in

changed since 8.1.1714.

I tried several LANG settings, gcc 8.3 vs. clang 8. All the same

It will show "+clipboard" as that machine has a running X and the
gtk3 gui version installed. Anyway the build was initialised within
a remote tmux session, though.

That patch seems to fix the issue.

Building in a tmux window stalls at:

VIMRUNTIME=../../runtime; export VIMRUNTIME;  ../vim -f  -u unix.vim -U NONE
--noplugin --not-a-term -s dotest.in test64.in --cmd 'au SwapExists * let
v:swapchoice = "e"' > /dev/null

Didn't found any buildprocess. Had to kill window, though.

8.1.0655 builds fine.

A second build in a tmux session ran fine. The first build was in a
detached tmux session. Maybe that was the reason of the failure?

There was /.config. Don't know why...

Removed it and all went fine ;-)

To reproduce: cd to source dir.

$ CXX=/usr/bin/clang++-5.0 CC=/usr/bin/clang-5.0 ./configure
--with-features=huge  --enable-gui=athena
$ make
$ cd src/testdir
$ make

The binaries of clang maybe have to be adjusted to your
environment. Anyway the failure occurs with gcc 7.3 as well.

A simple

./configure && make && make test

in a clean source tree (meanwhile v8.0.1118) gives the same error.

I've build in a clean chroot. Both i386 and ppc failed with the same

There was a leftover from an old ALSA bug. I deleted the directory
/.config owned by root, created in 2013 and everything works as
expected now.

BTW the former version 8.0.0946 compiled fine with /.config ...
