Sounds like the Power Supply is dieing.

Time to look for a replacement.

I should mention that I used to keep an LCIII around just for the purpose
of checking the size of 72 pin Ram chips since there is only one slot and
it boots mighty Quick!

No I don't have the LCIII with the 64MB of Ram anymore... ;-(

I now use a Q605 for this since it will also recognize a correctly

A grey screen with only the cursor on boot is a sure sign of a SCSI
termination problem.

You need to go back and double check your drives for correct SCSI ID's and
correct termination.

Ken, I've set the drives on the JackHammer to get power from the bus, and
the last one to provide termination. I believe it's correct. If I delete
the stripe and replace it with simple partitions, both drives mount
correctly, and have run a long test on the drives with no errors.

It's only if I try to mount a striped array that I get a problem.

Since this is the only reason (I can tell) for wanting to use FWB HDTK I'm
really thinking this s/w is a con.

John
John,

I have never used the FWB software for RAID ( I like Hard Disk Speed Tools
from IntechUSA ) so can't give advice about the software.

Make sure that you are not duplicating ID's, like having a drive on the
internal bus set to 0 and one on the Jackhammer set to 0. While I
understand that you should be able to do this for the sake of
troubleshooting it is one less thing to have as a potential problem.

You also may need to have an active terminator at the end of the cable in
order for those Wide drives to operate correctly.

Hey Mark,

Do you have a picture of this upgrade card?

I poked around your FPM site a little but didn't find one.
I would sure like to see this upgrade card.
I have a socketed mobo in one of my SE/30's and have been toying with the
idea of pulling the
50MHz processor from an old Daystar upgrade for a II that I have lying

then seeing how high I can actually chip the board without having problems.

Not sure how well this would work since the FPU is soldered on the mobo so
you can't simply replace it with the one from the Daystar, and I'm
guessing that it probably won't run at 50MHz.

snip and the first 2 LC Macs can only use up to 10 megs.

I thought that the LC III could only handle 10mbs of memory also. Is
this incorrect? I would like to add memory to an LCIII if it can handle
more.

At least 36 Mb (32 Mb 72 pin SIMM 4Mb on the motherboard) like mine.

I kept an LC III around for a long time just for testing 72pin Simms because
it will recognize Simms up to 128MB

Re: IIfx vs 386DX/40

2002-08-21 Thread Harbourmaster

What year was 7.5.5 released? Win95B came along in
1996. Could use Win95 plus the service pack to make
it Win95a along with the Y2K update. Then both systems
  would be quite patchy. ;)

This sounds like an excellent test of retro-computing, I'd love to
post the pictures and text and results on my web page.

I think you should perform the test with both machines running
optimal OSes. OS 7.1 w/updates is by far the optimal OS for the IIfx
in my mind, that is if you are going to test internet performance.
Otherwise, OS 6.0.8 will blow the doors off the PC. Is Win95 optimal
for the 386? It is a full 32-bit machine, so I guess yes (else,
linux would scream, but it's not a mainstream OS, especially during
the early '90's). I would think that the scaled down as possible
Win95b would be best.

Hope to see it happen, please notify me anyone who is preceding with
it. I unfortunately own neither a 386DX40 nor the fx. I have a
couple of SE/30's, ideas anyone? Best, David

The IIfx is a capable web machine if it is setup properly.

I had 32MB of Ram in mine along with a Jackhammer card and fast 2gig SCSI drive
and an 8*24GC video card. Running System 7.1 with some of the add in
appearance enhancements (+ ThreadMngr/DragMngr etc...) it did quite
well on the
Internet using Netscape 2.02 and IE 2.01 IIRC .

Performance with a 56K modem was acceptable and on par with a Pentium 266
machine running W95 that I had the great misfortune of having to use
at work at the time.

Running the IIfx with the addition of iCab and my ADSL connection it was a
solid performer!

Unfortunatly I no longer have this machine so I can't give you any
solid numbers
ie. page load speeds etc...

Too bad the IIfx CPU and FPU weren't socketed

Ahh but some were!!

I had 50Mhz parts pulled from a Daystar Accelerator in mine at one point,
overclocked to 60 before I had trouble with the serial ports.

All this talk of hotrod IIfx makes me want to run down to Orange County and
pick up another IIfx from Mike Ford!

Re: IIsi and Daystar Turbo040

2001-07-26 Thread Harbourmaster

I just now finally had the opportunity to test out my IIsi with the
Turbo040, thanks to the adapter John Ruschmeyer from LEMSwap so kindly sent
me.

As we all know, though, these things seldom go smoothly.

When I started up the IIsi with the Turbo040 in it (on the adapter card, of
course) and the cache attached, all I got was a sputtering noise from the
Mac, and some fast blinking from the green power LED. I removed the Turbo040
card and adapter entirely. The IIsi booted fine. I removed the cache from
the Turbo040 and tried it with the accelerator alone and the adapter. Same
sputtering response from the Mac. I removed the accelerator but left the
adapter card in the computer. It booted fine. Is a bad Turbo040 the only
possibility here?

(Guess I can't complain too much, I did get it for only $20, but still!)

Amber Rhea [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well Amber

If you have a IIci about, you could put the Turbo 040
into it's cache slot and see if it works.
That way you could find out if the card itself is O.K.
