 will get you the Sonnet splash panel under the OS splash screen, and
 show the Sonnet icon as the first in the March of the Icons across the
 bottom of the screen. It also gets your upgrade card marching sooner

 extension conflict now, it will rear its ugly head at some even less
 convenient time.

Agreed. I nailed it down to the Apple CD-ROM ext and Sound Manager.
Fortunately, neither are needed for this particular system, or I'm willing to
risk loading them first and see what happens.

 More to the point it is that you give thought to maximizing RAM and
 upping your OS to at least 8.6. Surely the G3 deserves better than an
 iffy version of a largely 68K-oriented System?

RAM is maxed. Unfortunately, this machine is my daughters dedicated
sampler/sequencer for her keyboards and it's hosting Digidesign Nubus hardware
and software that must use a particular OS. Otherwise I wouldn't hesitate.

So far so good and it's performing well and much snappier. Audio processing
speed is definitely up.

Sorry for posting this to this 68k list, but since I'm stuck with this older
OS, I didn't think I'd get many answers on a PPC list.
Thanks for all the help.

Thanks Ken. That was it.

Now it seems that it locks up after loading the sonnet extension if any other

Is there a way to edit the name to insure that it always loads last? Would
this matter? I could just put spaces in front of all the others I guess.

Re: Drive problems

2005-11-07 Thread Thomas Burns
A little more info. These drives have been in these computers for at least a
year working fine. When I try to boot the IIci or 7500 the drives spin up
but then I get the flashing question mark. Could they have become unmounted
some how? I've also tried reseating the ram and vram, but that didn't seem
to do anything. I also was able to boot the 7500 to an external CD (since
now the internal CD doesn't seem to want work either) with system 8, and it
could see the internal cd and an unmounted drive which I'm assuming is the
HD. Could unplugging the original drive have done something when I tried to
add a slave drive, like a conflict that got rid of the start up drive?

Thanks

The Turbo 601 requires a minimum of a FAT install of
System 7.5* with the Turbo 601 Enabler in the System
folder. IIRC, if you update to 7.5.5 you can remove
the enabler. I know 7.6 does not require it on the
hard drive, but still does on a PPC boot floppy.

8.1 does not require the 601 enabler at all, but you
need one of the hacks to allow it to boot with the
Turbo 601 disabled.

*The Turbo 601 originally came with a free copy of
7.5 on floppy disks to ensure the user had the
minimum required System software.

Drive problems

2005-11-06 Thread Thomas Burns

Hi,

This post has questions for the compact list and the PCI list, so I'll post
to both. I've been having some drive issues with a IIci and a 7500.

The IIci has a Turbo601, 128mbs ram, 2gb HD.
I'll either get the 4 chime sound and a black screen when I boot up or I get
the flashing question mark. I can boot from an external HD that's running
7.0.1. Could this be a dead drive or could the Turbo601 have died?

The 7500 has a Crescendo 450mhz card, 512mb ram, 1gb quantum fb hd. I tried
to add a 9gb seagate scsi HD as a slave, but could never get it to recognize
the drive in combination with the master 1gb. I did get the machine to boot
with a CD running 8.0 and formated the drive and broke it into 4 partitions.
Now when I boot all I get is the flashing question mark when the original
drive is in by itself. I cannot boot from the CD any more either. I tried 3
other quantum drives and all I get is the flashing question mark. How in the
world can I have 5 dead drives when they were all working?

Thanks for your help.

Does anyone have a clue about how to hook up a Brainstorm accelerator to a
Plus? I got one through eBay, but it looks like it requires some
soldering.

I don't think that's quite my forte.

If you bought it from SunRem, it should have come with installation
instructions. At least, the five I bought from them a few months back came
with installation instructions. It does require soldering though.

Where are you located? Perhaps one of the soldering enabled list members
is in your locale.

Re: Mac Plus Server

2005-10-11 Thread Thomas Burns
Actually your odd question is funny. You're right, it's got machttp running
right now. I have Netpresenz on there and machttp 2.2, but for some reason
netpresenz won't display the images. Maybe I didn't share all the folders
inside the web folder and it can't find the images folder. I'm not sure
about having the hdds spin down. Can you do that under 7.0.1? That
miniscribe makes a lot of noise when it's accessed.

Is there a way to change the 10-Oct-105 thing? I get that on a IIci server I
have, but only some browsers pick that up like Safari. IE on a PC reads it
as 2005.

One other questions. I have a Mac512 modified with a Dove 2mb upgrade and
scsi port coming out of the battery slot. I hooked the 512 up to the
external hd and it booted system 7.0.1 and I was able to open about this
mac and then it froze. I assume sys 7.0.1 doesn't work with a 512. So is
there any webserver software that runs under system 6.0.8? I'm sure the 2mb
would be enough.

works... seems to be sluggish respond to initial http requests but
once its going it speeds along decently... (you dont have the hdds set
to spin down after a ceartain time do you?)

one odd question;
on the page downloaded from the plus itself you have a link to the
webserver software you claim it is running; netpresenz
yet the server identifies itself as machttp 2.2...
did you change this string in the servers config or does netpresenz
just identify itself as machttp by default...

one more thing that i found humorous it reports the page as last
modified on 10-Oct-105 the y2k bug strikes again ;)

Re: Mac Plus Server

Very cool...you should include yourself in this list:
http://www.ld8.org/servers/

I'm looking for a web server called Pipsqeekan SE/30. It lookes
like it has vanished, it was really cool and had a webcam that you
could actually see your IP on the screen after doing a refresh. Does
anyone know where the server is?

I don't know if the webcam was streaming from the SE/30...is there a
webcam that can be used with one?

Re: Mac Plus Server

2005-10-11 Thread Thomas Burns
It is indeed a 20SC case with the 20mb MiniScribe inside. I tried to format
the 2gb hd that came with it, but could never get it to work.
It's got about 12mbs worth of stuff on it, including an old copy of Netrek,
Risk, Word and some browsers.

Does anyone have a clue about how to hook up a Brainstorm accelerator to a
Plus? I got one through eBay, but it looks like it requires some soldering.
I don't think that's quite my forte.

Awesome server. Is that a 20SC underneath the Plus, or
one of bigger capacity?

Mac Plus Server

2005-10-10 Thread Thomas Burns

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to do a test run on the Mac Plus I got running as a web server.
Thanks to everyone's help with getting this thing up. Now all I have to do
is get some useful content on it.

Just remember, it's REALLY slow, so it takes a while to load.

Apple Internet Router

2005-10-03 Thread Thomas Burns

Hi,
Does anyone know how to hook a Mac Plus up to DSL via a LocalTalk cable and
another Mac? I've got the Plus running 7.0.1 and MacTCP with 4mbs RAM and a
20mb HD. It's sitting next to an SE/30 with 7.5.5 connected directly to a
hub that's connected to a DSL router. All my Macs can see the Plus and the
Plus can see all the other Macs. From what I've read, I need Apple's
Internet Router on the SE/30 and the Plus would have it's gateway set to the
SE/30s IP address, correct? Now would this allow me to run a server off the
Plus and can I just assign it an IP? So if I put MacHTTP on it and open a
port, let's say 81 can someone ping it from the outside world? Where do I
get Apple's Internet Router? I've looked around for it but just found
patches on the old software site. Is it an addon that comes with system
7.5.5?

Thanks

Thomas

That's what I was going to say. The newer Mac may have installed a

volume size issues that might crop up.

Mac Plus

2005-09-28 Thread Thomas Burns
I'm trying to hook up an external HD to a Mac Plus with 4mbs of ram.The HD
set to SCSI 6, and I have a terminal plug in the other SCSI socket. The HD
is a 2G Quantum Fireball ST. I can't get the Plus to boot from the drive.
However I have an old 20mb HD that has system 6.0.8 on it and when I stick
it in the same case as the Quantum (swapping it) it boots from 20mb drive. I
put system 7.5.5 on the Quantum via a Mac SE/30, but still the Plus won't
recognize the drive to boot off. I can boot off a floppy and the HD drive
comes up and I can see all the system software.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
Thomas

Did Bandai develop the electronics in it? The last
time I heard anything about Bandai was back when Power
Rangers was the thing to watch. They made the action
figures and got really rich in the mid-90s. I didn't
know Bandai did electronics...

--- Arnel Tuazon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

From Wikipedia:

The Apple Pippin was a technology for a multimedia
title player (sometimes
mistakenly referred to as a games console ) designed
by Apple Computer in
the mid-1990s. It was based around a 66 MHz PowerPC
603e processor, and ran
a cut-down version of the Mac OS. The goal was to
create an inexpensive
computer aimed mostly at playing CD-based multimedia
titles, especially
games, but also functioning as a network computer.
It featured a 4x CD-ROM
drive and a video output that could connect to a
standard television
monitor.
Apple never intended to release its own Pippin.
Instead it intended to
license the technology to third parties, a model
similar to that of the
ill-fated 3DO. However the only Pippin licensee to
release a product to
market was Bandai.
By the time the Bandai Pippin was released, (1995
for Japan, 1996 for the
United States) the market was already dominated by
the Nintendo 64, Sony
PlayStation, and Sega Saturn, machines which were
much more powerful as game
machines than the more general purpose Pippin. In
addition, there was little
ready-to-go software for Pippin, the only major
publisher being Bandai
itself. Costing US$599 on launch, it was also
expensive: though touted as a
cheap computer, this was only true if compared to
the Macintosh. It was
far more expensive than a PlayStation.
Ultimately, Pippin as a technology suffered because
it was a late starter in
the 3D generation of consoles, and was under-powered
as a gaming machine and
personal computer. Bandai's version died a quick
death, only ever having a
relatively limited release in the United States and
Japan.

I also checked out links from this description and
came to the 3DO and M2
both of which used RISC processors (i.e. 3DO used
the ARM60 32-bit and the
M2 used a PowerPC 602/33).

So, all in all, I'm sorry but the Pippin does NOT
belong on this list.
Please take it to the PowerPC list. Thank you. ;D

BTW thanks and nice find! Never heard of the Pippin
before this.

PowerPC 7500

2005-06-16 Thread Thomas Burns

A couple questions.
I'm trying to turn a 7500 into a little media center mainly just playing
iTunes or internet radio.

Specs on the 7500:
Currently running 8.6 with a 2gb HD and 512mb ram and a sonnet crescendo
450mhz upgrade

Can I do the following...

1. Install 10.2 or 10.3 (I just bought a copy of 9.0 and assume I can use
Xpostfacto, has anyone done this?)

2. Install a wireless card?
3. Have the S-video out display on the TV?
4. Use a bluetooth keyboard or mouse after putting a USB card in?

5. Related question, does Airport Express extend the range of a
(non-Airport) wireless router?

Thanks,

Thomas

Absolutely. I'm running a IIci under 8.1, headless with Quid Pro Quo and Net
Presenz.
Also running an SE/30 under 7.5.5 with Quid ProQuo and an SE under 7.5.5
with MacHTTP.

I'm still trying to find the time to get this old Mac 512k modified with a
SCSI and 2mbs of ram to work as a server. I've fiddled with it a bit under
6.0.8 but haven't gotten anything to connect.

There's a whole list of old 68k sites here http://macintosh.luddite.ca/

Greetings!!
After reading this post, I became interested too.
Is there a way I could run my Mac II ci as a Web Server on the Internet?
I would only need the basic http publishing services, as well as some FTP
access to update the website every once in a while.

I am currently running 7.6 and would like to know if there is any third
party app orif not, what would I need to have and know for doing so? I' d
be more than glad to put little II ci to work as a web server since I have
the facilities to host

can it work headless/keyboardless (As in a hosting server colocation
environment, for an instance?)

Re: What to do with IIcx?

It would work great as a webserver. I've got a IIci tricked out with a 66mhz
card and 128mbs ram and it's been chugging away as a headless server for
several months.

That´s my point. I mean, if I can make a Mac talk with a threesome of Linux
Machines and a duo of WinTel ones, from different eras, and they all
handshake together via TCP/IP, which has changed little in several years , I
might be able to put the IIci to Talk TCP/IP and join the club, I guess.
Can I configure it to be the print server over TCP/IP? Does anyone has
further update on the IIci as a mp3 player idea? ;)
Greets!

Not quite true.
They can't mount each other's drives via the Chooser (or the Connect to
Server on Tiger) but they can talk to each other over TCP/IP using FTP
(file transfer protocol). It's only AppleTalk that's screwed up.

Re: MacTCP and MacHttp

2005-03-23 Thread Thomas Burns
I can now get the 512k to boot system 6.0.8 with MacTCP, however I'm not
sure if I'm putting the right Dayna SCSI/Ethernet extension in. It's a tight
fit getting all that on an 800k floppy. I haven't had success yet getting
MacHTTP 2.2 to fully run off the other floppy. It'll come up and say it's
missing something then either give me an out of memory error or some other
error. Does anyone have anything lower than 2.2?

As a side note, it made me laugh when I launched Kings Quest I over
LocalTalk and it ran on the 512. Why do these goofy things amuse us so much?
I like to think of it as working on a car in the garage, but cheaper and
smaller.

Also, any recomendations of what to cut out of it in order to make
it as small as possible so I can run MacHTTP off the other drive?
I was pretty sure MacHTTP required 7 or higher, but I may be wrong
about that.
I just got my IIfx in the mail. Bought it off ebay as a non-working

Jeeze, old macs like this are built like tanks, I swear. Shame it

400k disks

2005-03-16 Thread Thomas Burns
I just picked up a Mac 512k that someone was going to turn into a maquarium
(heaven forbid).
My question is how do I make a 400k system disk for it? Someone earlier told
me you can make 800k disks by putting tape over the hole on regular 1.4mb
disks. Is there any way to format a 1.4 as a 400k?

Thanks,
Thomas

Wow. So this little device looks like it will fit on the 512 if you use a
DB9 to DB25 converter and plug it in the phone or printer port? I see it
also has a built in web server, I'm assuming you can configure this from a
PC, so in theory you could attach it and serve files from the 512 and you
wouldn't have to add MacTCP to the 512 or anything?

Re: Can someone help me get my old reliable Mac IIci on the web?

2005-03-05 Thread Thomas Burns
I've got a IIci and an SE being used as a web servers. The IIci has a video
card, a Turbo601 card, Ethernet card and 2gig hard drive. The SE has a
DaynaPORT SCSI/Link-T to Ethernet connection and an 80mb hard drive. Both
are connected to a Netgear 10 base T hub (since the old Ethernet cards have
trouble connecting directly to a router) and that's connected to a Linksys
router. The IIci serves up pretty fast, but the SE is dog slow, but it
works. A good way to move files from your PC to your ci is to put NetPresenz
FTP server on the ci and just drop and drag files from XP or W2K.

I also have an SE/30 all ready to serve when I get a site built.
And if anyone can think of a way to turn a Mac 512k into a server let me

You'll need a 10 base-T ethernet nubus card for your mac. In addition,
your mac should be running system 7 and be using open transport. You'll
need iCab for web browsing. It will be kinda slow, because I have a IIci
myself and am able to get it on-line.

Mac 512 and LaserWriter IIg questions

2005-03-03 Thread Thomas Burns
My first question is, can you put a web server on a Mac 512k/e? I was
wondering if you could use system 6.0.8 and run the connection via AppleTalk
bridge? Would the limiting factor be the memory?

My second question is, what is the pds slot on a LaserWriter IIg motherboard
for? I tried some research on the web about anything fitting in there, but I
couldnt come up with anything. Were there plans at one time to have an
accelerator for it?

Thanks,
Thomas

Re: Mac 512 and LaserWriter IIg questions

2005-03-03 Thread Thomas Burns
It's all about sheer geekiness, or at least my wife think that. Why do you
have all these little Macs in the office, they're not like pets or anything.
Please don't turn the toaster oven into a web server. lol

I think the serial port hard drive would be easier to find than the 3rd
party ram upgrade. What if you dropped down to a lower system like 3 or 4? I
think the recommended system for a 512 is like 3.2? MacTCP wouldn't work
with that would it nor would WebStar would it?

I saw an Atari 800 as a web server, however I think the IP was on an outside
device and when hit, the Atari would just squirt out a few lines of html and
that was about all it could do with 48k.

I'm just wondering if this was a solvable problem.

Wow. I guess you could shoehorn System 6.0.8 plus MacTCP onto an 800K
floppy, but what apps or extensions would provide the actual web sharing?
You wouldn't get WebStar on the same floppy. A 512k/e with an extra
(external) floppy drive just conceivably might allow you to run WebStar,
if there's a version of WebStar that would run in what's left of 512K RAM
after System 6 including TCP are loaded into RAM... but then, umm, exactly
what files would you be sharing up over the web, your own System Folder?

Unless you had one of those ancient serial-port hard disks, then you could
put HTML files on it.

That would be one seriously sluggish web site, though... TCP over
LocalTalk bridge.

It would be downright fantastic for sheer geekiness to do it, but I'm
guessing the sticking point is the RAM. I seem to recall one of those
Get your Classic System 6 Mac on the Internet sites where the challenge
of getting a 512k/e online was marked unsolved but I'm still trying. It
may be that System 6 and MacTCP together leave you with very little left
over to run anything in.

My LC is sitting here next to me...
::switches KVM switch::
I'm running MultiFinder and more than a few extensions in addition to
MacTCP, but System 6.0.8 is eating 2914 K plus 160 K for Finder. You
could rename WebStar to Finder and set the file type and creator to that
of Finder's and run a Finderless web server, that'll save you some K. But
512 is a very small space to work in.

Now, of course, if you've got your hands on one of those incredibly rare
3rd-party RAM upgrades for the 512k/e (the ones that you had to clip and
solder) as well as a serial hard disk, all bets are off ;)

My second question is, what is the pds slot on a LaserWriter IIg
motherboard for? I tried some research on the web about anything fitting
in there, but I couldnt come up with anything. Were there plans at one

Disk on a floppy. When I download the file from Apple and try to stick it on
a 1.4mb disk, it says Not enough room, addition 4k needed. I've reformatted
and tried different disks, same results. What's up with that?

Thanks

Yeh speed is the biggest difference. Also the Asante PDS card I have in
my (currently in bits) SE/30 is totally compatible with Open Transport
and requires no drivers other than the standard Apple ones included
with OT 1.x.
As far as I know the Mac, Mac 512, Plus, Classic and Classic II are the
only desktop machines you can't buy internal Network Interface Cards
for, or don''t have LAN built-in as standard. (Man that was a horrible
sentence ;o) ). No other examples come straight to mind at least.

I guess you could set up an apple internet router which is a bridge
between localtalk and ethernet though that is soo sloow that the
scsi ethernet might actually feel fast..used to run this sw on an LC.

SE/30 Ethernet

Just a quick question about getting an SE/30 on a LAN.
Is there any difference between a SCSI to Ethernet adapter/bridge or an

PowerMac 7500 USB

2005-01-26 Thread Thomas Burns
Hey, thanks for all the KVM info.
Another question. I just installed a USB pci card on a PowerMac 7500. I also
installed the USB card support from Apple. When I attach anything like a zip
drive, printer, flash card reader, the Mac can't see it and says no drive
attached or can't find printer or scanner or whatever.
I've tried to install any drivers I could find for the zip driver, scanner,
printer, but still nothing.

Also, assuming I get a USB zip drive working and share it, can my IIci see
it and use it through appletalk?

Thanks

I've a 8 port and a 4 port Avocacent switch. (19 for PCs).
I connect the macs (840av and a 9600). Industrial stuff
I saw the vendor has ps/2 to adb converters, but they are Eur 70 the set.
They also can connect Sparcs etc to it, same pricerange.

Re: Mac IIci web Server - resolved?

2005-01-16 Thread Thomas Burns
Hey,
Funny you should ask about it, the problem was in the router firmware! I'm
using the Linksys BEFSR41 that I got about 2002 I think and finally updated
the firmware since I couldnt think of anything else to do.
I've got the Mac IIci on a static IP in the DMZ with ports 21 and 80
forwarded to the local IP. I'm using www.no-ip.com for the name right now.

If you want to send the login info I'd like to see it.
Here's something weird I got back from being out of town for the weekend, I
saw in the log info it looked like someone was trying to hack into it using
some kind of DOS command. Is this Mac and my network safe from this kind of
stuff?

Just curious but did you ever get your web server sorted out?
I fiddled a bit more with the FirstClass server and was able to make it
accessable through our service at home which has a dynamic IP. On the
Linksys router I put the port outside the DMZ and also pointed the
nessessary ports 23 and 510 to the IP address of the SE/30 on the network
hosting the server.
If anyone wants to play on the antique server I can post the login info on
here.

Mac IIci web Server

2005-01-12 Thread Thomas Burns
Does anyone know anything about hosting a website behind a Linksys router?
I have Quid Pro Quo running on a IIci, but for some reason I can't seem to
hit the server from the world outside my LAN.
I've got port forwarding set up for 80 and 21 to go to that machine.

Thanks!

Re: Mac IIci web Server

2005-01-12 Thread Thomas Burns
I can see IIci on my LAN, and FTP files to it from my XP box.
It is a dynamic dns service, but I have the program that updates the IP
every 10 mins or so.
I have ports 80 and 8080 forwared to that machine and it's also outside the
DMZ.
A few people on the outside have been able to hit it and someone told me
their security level was low on their browser. Could that have something to
do with it? Most people who hit it just get a time out.

I swear I'm going to squeeze every bit of usefulness out of this IIci. lol
If anyone can ping it the address it

Just a few things to consider:
a) make sure you can see it from within the LAN via the LAN IP first.
b) you have to be outside the LAN to see the WAN IP it's routed to.
c) if your router is web browser configurable you want something
other than port 80 since the router is already using it for WAN
access requests.

PowerMacintosh 7500

2005-01-03 Thread Thomas Burns
I've got a question about a PowerMac 7500 I got about a month ago. It's
running OS 8.6, 133mhz 32mb 1gb. The weird thing that happens when I
download a file or move one over from my IIci it'll freeze up sometimes, or
if it transfers, when I go to open the folder, everything slows down and the
arrow jumps around all hurky jerky. Sometimes the file will eventually open
after 5 mins or more, sometimes I'll just freeze up. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Hooking up a LW IIf to Win2k and XP

2004-12-11 Thread Thomas Burns
Just wanted to share a tip about something I figured out about hooking a
LaserWriter IIf to a Mac IIci, a Win2k box and an XP box.
I was trying to get this old LaserWriter IIf on the home network so all
these computer could share it.
The IIf is hooked up to the Mac IIci which is hooked up to the homenetwork
via ethernet. It also has localtalk bridge on.

I went into my Win2k box and went under the start menu, control panels,
network connections, local area connection, properties, general tab, and
highlighted internet protocol, clicked install, clicked protocol and added
AppleTalk. This only works on Windows 2000, XP doesnt support AppleTalk.

Then went to start, control panels, printers, add printers, local printer,
create a new port (type AppleTalk Printing Devices). It should detect any
AppleTalk printers, when you click ok don't capture it or it will only be
available to your 2K box.

Share the printer. Any other systems on your network should be able to print
to it, however all your printing has to pass through your 2K box and then
through your Mac.

Does anyone know how to set up a fileserver on a Win2K box for Macs?
Also, does an SE/30 accept PowerPC accelerators?
Tom

LaserWriter IIf

2004-12-05 Thread Thomas Burns
Hey, just wanted to confirm something about a LW IIf. I turn it on and it
keeps rebooting and doesn't print a test page. There's a soft click coming
from the power supply every time it reboot. From what I've found on the web,
this sounds like a bad AC power supply and needs to be replaced. It probably
isn't the motherboard, correct?
Thanks

Re: LW IIf

2004-12-03 Thread Thomas Burns
Hey Allan,
Installing the LocalTalk bridge did the trick. The IIf is working perfectly.
How do I share it with PCs that are on the same home network? Also, how can
I get my IIci to see a Lexmark printer that's shared across the home
network?
Thanks again!

How are you physically connected to the IIf? Standard LocalTalk?
PhoneNet? Have you verified that AppleTalk is on and that the right port
is selected? Cable good? Have you tried switching the printer off and
then back on?

Or are you trying to use EtherTalk (AppleTalk over Ethernet) instead?
(Lots of folks do, so as to network with other machines on a LAN). Are you
using a LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge to get the IIf online? If you're
doing this, have you checked to make sure your AppleTalk connection is set
to rely on Ethernet and not the Printer Port (LocalTalk)? It *will*
default to Printer Port if you zap the PRAM or the parameter RAM settings
get hosed in some fashion, including via low PRAM battery.

You mentioned having the PPC upgrade in your ci. If I remember correctly,
it would not be terribly unusual for that to affect timing issues for
LocalTalk. If you are using a standard LocalTalk or PhoneNet connection
and sometimes it's there and sometimes your printer is missing in action,
you might want to consider the Enet-to-LocalTalk bridge and putting an
Ethernet card in (if you don't already have one).

Oh, and you can never have too many Macs. If you get a PM 7500 you can
set it up as a file server that everything from modern Macs running
Panther to System 6 Macs can mount on Desktop and access in common.

few little simple text things, but now it won't show up. I'm stumped. I've
tried changing the number of the device and even the cords. Oddly, the
little StyleWriter II works just fine when hooked up to the printer port.
Also, the LW sort of half ass prints from my XP box. Any suggestions?

Oh one other question. Since I've become addicted to fiddling with these

Re: R E Q U E S T

2004-11-29 Thread Thomas Burns
Hey,
If you're emailing from a PC, find TransMac. The shareware version will let
you read and write Mac floppies on a PC. Download Open Transport from
http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html
Find a copy of Unstuffit if you don't have one. Stick that on via floppy.
Stick your ethernet card in and hook it up to a dumb hub like a NetGear one.
It has to be a 10mb hub, not autosensing. Hook that up to your router. Put
an FTP server on your LC, like NetPresenz via floppy. Put an FTP client on
your PC. You should be able to FTP stuff back and forth.

LaserWriter IIf

2004-11-12 Thread Thomas Burns
Does anyone know anything about the LaserWriter IIf?
I've got it hooked up to a PC running windows 2k. I'm getting several
problems with it. I havent been able to print from it yet.

1. I'm occasionally getting all 4 lights blinking. I dont think there's a
paper jam.
2. I'm getting occasional smeared test pages with alternating semi smeared
test pages coming out. Looks like a toner problem, correct?
3. When all 4 lights aren't blinking I just get a continuous blinking green
light when I try to print to it and nothing ever comes out.
4. If this printer is hooked up to a PC (I previous had it on a Win95 box
about 7 years ago and it worked fine) can it be shared on home network?

5. A related question to printers - can you refill an old StyleWriter II
cartridge with one of those injectable ink syringes?

Oh and btw, thanks to everyone for helping gettig the IIci online. That
little computer still kicks ass.

Download the free OTTool from www.neon.com, it's a
very useful network utility.
If you want to get 100 megabit from the Asante card,
you don't want to use a 10 megabit hub.
What you need is a managed switch where you can
remotely set the speed and duplex settings of each
port. These are configured in various ways, by Telnet,
web browser, proprietary program, etc.
Since you're running System 7.5.5, the Asante test
program should run.

I've tried three cables. I'm pretty sure they're all regular cables and not
crossovers.
I'm not sure if the 10/100 is full duplex. How do you tell?

I also think I installed OT 1.1.2 over 1.1. It shows up as running 1.1.2 in
the info screen. Would that make a difference?

How can you see if the ethernet card is even being acknowledged by the Mac?

Oh and as side note if anyone wants to transfer small files from your PC to
a Mac that isn't on a network, TransMac allows you to read/write from your

Re: SE/30 uses

2004-10-25 Thread Thomas Burns
Hey guys,
Thanks for all your help so far trying to get this old Mac IIci online.
I think I solved the Asante nubus card not being recognized by running the
IIci through a Linksys switch. It appears to light up on the router. My next
question is under the TCP/IP screen it says:

Connect via: Ethernet
Configure: Manually
IP Address: 192.168.1.9
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Router addrses: 192.168.1.1
Name server addr: ?
Search Domains:?
Is this correct or do I just set Connect via: Using DHCP server?
I'm lost.
Thanks again.

I currently use one as my main file server for a G4 running OS neXt, An

It is FTP enabled using Stairways' NetPresence to support Linux access.
The lady friend also gets access via ftp from her Windoze box and a Mac
powerbook running OS neXt.. We talk to each other by posting files on the
SE/30.

An old Mac II chassis, with nothing but the power supply enabled, houses
four SCSI disks which are partitioned to give a few gigs of space
available to the group. By booting the SE/30 from an external disk I can
easily have a spare sitting right beside it. Actually, since I learned to
replace the electrolytic capacitors, I haven't used it.

For a while the SE/30 also used its serial port to record caller-ID data
from the telephone line using a modem and some terminal software.

Asante Ethernet card

2004-10-21 Thread Thomas Burns
I have a question about an Asante Ethernet card in a Mac IIci
I installed it and there's a green blinking light on the back. It's hooked
up to my Lynksys router, but on the router the lights are not on showing a
computer is connected.

Do I need drivers for this card? I'm in the pickle of not being able to get
on the internet with the Mac IIci to get anything for it and nothing seems
to transfer over from my PC via PC exchange.

Thanks

Here's a thought.. can an old Mac IIci with an Sonnet Presto 040 80/40 run

It would be rediculously slow, but at least it'd be productive. I see that
the minimum requiremts are
32mb of ram, system 7.5.5 and a power pc processor.
Anyone doing this?

Third question, does anyone have their old Macson a PC LAN? I've got a
couple PCs hooked up to DSL through a router. What can you do with an old
Mac if you stick it on a network like this? Can you use it as a
fileserver for the PCs?

You can easily hook it up to the internet as well, and fire up all the
vintage internet software you can find! I was surprised to find out that
reading newsgroups and emailing went just as well on my IIci as on my 600
Mhz iMac. Telnet and FTP work very well too. Websurfing is a bit awkward
because modern websites won't work with old versions of Netscape.

Can the PC's do Apple Talk? I'm afraid your Mac is too slow to be a
fileserver.

new to the list

2004-10-15 Thread Thomas Burns
Hey everyone,
I'm new to the vintage macs list. I'm trying to resurrect my old Mac IIci.
It boots up fine and seems to be in the condition I left it about 8 years
ago.

I've ordered an Ethernet card, a cache and 32megs of RAM. It's running
system 7.5.3 with an 80meg hard drive.

First question, does anyone know where the battery sits and how you replace
it? There's something that appears to be the internal battery, but it looks
like it's soldered.

Second question, since this Mac doesn't have any internet software on it,
how do you get anything like Netscape 2.0 or Claris Emailer on there? I've
got PC exchange, but so far I haven't had any luck moving things over. The
Mac just sees the apps as some PC file and won't run them.

Third question, does anyone have their old Macson a PC LAN? I've got a
couple PCs hooked up to DSL through a router. What can you do with an old
Mac if you stick it on a network like this? Can you use it as a fileserver

Iisi Presto No FPU?

2004-08-08 Thread Randall Thomas
Hi,
I've got a IIsi, 64meg, Presto 040, 7.6.

The Presto has a nice riser board with 2 PDS connectors which, I'm
assuming, allows the use of an additional PDS card. However, when I plug my
Asante MacConII (adaptor w/68882 FPU on board) into it, the system does not
see the FPU chip. If I unplug the Presto and leave the MacCon plugged into
the riser, the system sees the FPU just fine. I'm guessing the 040 can't
pass off instructions to the FPU?

Is this normal? What will work in that extra slot? Haven't tried the
ethernet part of the MacCon yet. I hope that works, but I have to do some
slight hardware mods to make it physically fit.

Also, any reason not to install OS8 on this system?

Thanks in advance for all the good advice!
Randall

 ~~~
 The biggest problem you're having is that the fpu is a 68882. That's dog
 slow to a 68040 CPU. It is being snobby, refusing to acknowledge the
 presence of that grandpa chip.
I see your point. So..., I suppose that means I'd be better off running a
soft FPU? This Presto has no FPU integrated.
Re: Mystery Radius PCI Card
2004-07-16 Thread Randall Thomas
Well, I decided to throw this PCI Radius card into my G3 Workgroup Server
(which I didn't want to do because it's been running smoothly for 5 months
without a restart) to run System Profiler and see if it gave a clue. Not
much help. It identifies the device as RDUS,GoldenGate. Of course, I can
find no reference to a GoldenGate model by Radius anywhere.
I'm not anxious to start loading up various drivers to try it out either.
I'd like to keep my server healthy! The mystery will just have to continue
for now.
OK, success with the Griffin unit. But not quite as I expected. Hooked to a
perfectly with both adaptors in there, and it's stable.
never sound, so it doesn't seem to be starting up. Could this be the
PRAM battery? I've tried it without the additional VRAM and RAM
installed, still to no avail.
Any help would be great.
Thanks
Thomas
Re: LC 450 startup problems
2003-10-18 Thread Thomas Harvey
 Ah, thanks Jeff. I had a similar problem with an old Performa 5260 (a
sad beast I know). It used to start after a few restarts. I'll give
that a try.
If it bongs, then you're getting the ROM to function. Like the
Quadras, the LC 475 likes to NOT fire up with a dead P-RAM battery.
You CAN restart it rapidly, twice, and fool it into starting with a
dead battery. Try that before going on to other troubleshooting  stuff.
found SE/30 in trash...want to repair
2003-06-23 Thread Dave Thomas
Someone by my house tossed out a Mac SE/30 yesterday and I snagged it.
No keyboard or mouse...but the case is in perfect condition. The Mac
powers on and makes the boot sound but the CRT just has a single
vertical line running right down the middle of the screen. Any advice on
trying to repair this problem? Thanks for any tips.
You bet. If I can find my torx set I'll try to fix it tonight.
