RE: Playback Controls in Lock Screen
I can't reproduce this on my 4S running iOS 6. When I press home twice on the lock screen the playback controls appears every time regardless if I'm listening to music or a podcast and they also appear if nothing is playing. After I posted the message my iPhone was locked and nothing was playing. I tried pressing home again twice and this time the controls came up just fine. So, maybe you can try this. Start playing something and then lock the phone or wait until it locks. Then with music or a book playing and the screen locked press home twice and see if the controls come up. So far every time something is playing they don’t come up, but if nothing is playing they do come up and I can double tap “Play and while the controls are still up, they usually disappear after about 10 seconds or so, I can pause and play again and all that. Re: Accessible-iOS Is the upgrade worth it
Hi, I honestly don't there is any more or less bugs in IOS 6 than in any other previous version of IOS. Its just that, its new, and people talk about bugs. Thats pretty much what these lists are about. If everything worked as it was supposed to, there wuld be like 1 post a week. haha. Using the Australian voice as default
I am in Canada and use the Australian voice as the default. I find this voice to be far superior in quality to the standard voice and is so much easier to listen to. For this to work properly you need to change your regional setting. Go to settings, general, international, region format and set to Australia. The voice automatically changes to Australian English as default when this is selected. In about ten minutes the HQ voice will appear and you can then decide to use it or the compact voice by turning this on in VoiceOver settings. Hope this helps. WhatsApp not playing audio messages through speaker
Hello, I'm using whatsapp on an iPhone 4S with iOS 5. Before the update, I was able to play audio messages that were sent to me through the iPhone's speaker. After the update to iOS 6, this doesn't work anymore. The messages are only played through the headset; this is especially inconvenient as siri is sometimes turned od accidently when lifting the phone to your ear, so you can't listen to the audio message properly. I tried re-installing whatsapp and re-booted the phone, but this behavior still remains. Is there anything I could do to play audio through the speaker again? I never tried this before reading your post. But it works for me just as you described. That is, playing music with the screen locked, then a double press of the home button brings up the track name and artist along with a pause button and at the bottom of the screen the unlock option. Kimber On 9/25/12, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hello, Interesting nobody noticed this before and brought it up. Tonight a friend came to the door and I did what I usually do and was surprised to notice that a double press of the home button when the phone is locked now does exactly the same as a single press and that is it shows the unlock control, it shows what's currently playing and it has, of course, the Camera button. No more playback controls. I use an iPhone 4S with iOS 6 and it would be good to know if this is a universal change or bug or if for some people who use an iPhone 4 or who already received their 5 this still works. When podcasts are behind a username and password, Downcast can log in. If you want the description of an episode, in the Apple app, you have to tap the more info button for each and every episode, whereas Downcast speaks this info right on the screen as you review. I may not want to delete an episode because what happens if I want to go back to an earlier episode to find something again. I am able to delete single episodes in Today in iOS Podcast by doing the pass through gesture and then swiping across them left to right similar to how you would delete songs prior to the Action rotor, the Action rotor is not yet implemented in Podcasts. In any case, if I have to delete one episode at a time how long am I supposed to delete stuff, there are now 241 episodes of Today in iOS and what if you are a new subscriber to another Podcast with hundreds of episodes? I guess it's not that big a deal to have them all listed there, but then again if other apps can hide them that means it can be done. Apple claims they want to have the best Podcast app there is and it's not like they didn't have plenty to compare it to. It's sort of like with the new Maps, they make a big deal about a new product and then it falls way short of what people expect and is launched with lots of problems or incomplete features. Takes a bit of practice since you do have to lift up and put down again exactly on the delete key. What would be nice is if Apple could keep things the way they are with the delete key and in addition to that re-enable split tapping just for the delete key since for Shift and More Numbers the touch typing method is vastly better than having to double tap or split tap. Hi all, I sent the following request to Apple, trying to be as clear as I could. If you agree with my disagreement, I would like you to do the same with your own words. Thanks. Dear Apple team, This new iOS version is great, but I would like to point out some unpleasant issues with its revised touch typing mode. 1, It was a good move to give touch typing behaviour to keys such as capital or other but not for the delete key. let me try and explain why. In the previous iOS version, you could delete characters successively by holding the delete key and split tapping as many times as you wanted. You had full control of your delete speed because no matter where the second finger was typing, the delete function was performed as long as the delete key was held. Now, with iOS six, you must be very careful and accurate if you want to delete successive characters, as you have to constantly hit and release the delete key. The new delete double tap and hold function is too quick to let you hear the feedback of what you are deleting, so it is unusable most of the time. My wish is that the delete key was restored as it was in previous iOS versions. The second disadvantage is for non-English- users who use accented letters frequently. It is true that keyboard latency has been improved because of this, but it is now impossible to briefly hit a key and then double tap and hold it to get its alternative characters. You now have to do three gestures, find the right letter, split tap, and then double tap and hold to look for accents. May I suggest if possible, that you give us the accents list as soon as split tapping is performed, allowing us to scroll through it by sliding the second finger, that would be much easyer. Re: Jail Broken iphone 4 restore problem
another thing to keep in mind is that screen reader doesn't read everything on ITunes when you are restoring a jail broken phone. I was trying to restore a phone to unlock it. Jaws kept telling me that there are 8 hours remaining for the computer to download the software after which the phone can be restored. On the computer screen however, I got the message congratulations your phone is unlocked. It was to appear after the restoration was already complete. So, even if the computer was stuck at 8 hours, I was ready to use the phone in hardly 15 20 minutes. Just another thing to keep in mind. - Original Message - From: Kliphton kliph...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, September 24, 2012 7:27 PM Subject: Re: Jail Broken iphone 4 restore problem That's not necessarily true. I find this really good because some podcasts are recorded at quite a low level. Continuous play behaviour can be set on a podcast by podcast basis. When podcasts are behind a username and password, Downcast can log in. If you want the description of an episode, in the Apple app, you have to tap the more info button for each and every episode, whereas Downcast speaks this info right on the screen as you review. And finally, you can engage with the author of Downcast on Twitter. He listens and makes changes based on user feedback. Not sure if the Apple podcasts app supports sharing the episodes you are listening to on Twitter and Facebook complete with a link that actually plays the episode, but I like this about Downcast too. I have not found that, but I agree with ?Alvin, in Downcast if you mark episodes as played they are not visible unless you tap on Show More Episodes or whatever it's called exactly. And with Maps I can see how it would be a huge job, not exactly the case with a Podcast app. Regards, Sieghard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Neil Barnfather - TalkNav Sent: Sunday, September 23, 2012 8:21 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Downcast vs iOS Podcast Client you already can, well not hide them, but delete them. just press the more button at the top of the podcast in question. In about ten minutes the HQ voice will appear and you can then decide to use it or the compact voice by turning this on in VoiceOver settings. Hope this helps. Apps staying where they are after updating to iOs 6
Hi All, I am new to this list, and am glad to be here. I am about to update to iOS six, but before I do, when I update, will my apps stay the same as they are on their respective screens now? Or am I going to have to do something before updating, to make them stay where and how they are? I have my calendar and contacts backed up through iCloud, and when I went to turn on iCloud backup, it said if I turn it on, that when plugged in to my computer, my phone will no longer sync automatically with iTunes I guess as it does now. Re: losing Wi fi conection from time to time
Okay, to respond a bit more to this thread, I have bluetooth on. I use a Jawbone era headset and a BrailleSense OnHand. Sometimes I think the Wifi goes down when the OnHand is paired and sometimes it does go down when neither the headset or braille device is in use. But I've had to choose my network two more times today. I haven't yet redone my settings, partly because I did this so many times in IOS 5 with its intermittent problem, with no gain. However, you're right. What kind of beta tester would I be if I didn't try this? grin. So I'll do this and report the result. What a pain though. Thanks. This always brought up the playback controls like Previous, Play/Pause, next as well as volume and Airplay. I always found this an easy and quick method to Pause an audio book or Podcast if somebody came to the door or when I just wanted to stop it for another reason as I didn't have to unlock my phone. Re: Apps staying where they are after updating to iOs 6
My apps didn't stay in their folders and i had to put them all back where they belonged, or most of them anyway. I also wasn't able to use a backup to restore because when I got through I must have gone ahead and synced and I only had one backup which was the one after the upgrade; I haven't yet taken the time to explore whether there's an option somewhere to have only one backup vs. multiple ones but this is what happened to me. I never had the problem with my apps coming out of folders on any other upgrade. But I haven't heard of anybody else who had this problem so I don't know why that happened to me. Also, you can back up to either iCloud or your computer and I still feel more comfortable both doing my upgrade through iTunes and backing up to my computer. That's a matter of personal preference but I just wanted people to know iCloud hasn't become the only option. Start playing something and then lock the phone or wait until it locks. Then with music or a book playing and the screen locked press home twice and see if the controls come up. So far every time something is playing they don't come up, but if nothing is playing they do come up and I can double tap Play and while the controls are still up, they usually disappear after about 10 seconds or so, I can pause and play again and all that. My wife who is sighted and I share a grocery list and for some reason, many times the only way I can figure out the name of an item is by tapping on an icon labeled AllCell disclosure Circle Normal which then brings me to a screen where I can determine the name of the item. The funny thing is that this isn't consistent. I absolutely love this grocery list app however and hope that you can figure out why VoiceOver isn't reading the item names. Thanks much for having a presence on this list. If I just scroll through, I'm greeted with a flick sound but no item name until I click on the expand button. I don't think it's an icon or picture on there, as the other things can be read fine. Re: Using the Australian voice as default
Actually, there are three different places where you can change in International. One is language, where there unfortunately isn't an option for Australian English. Another is voice control, and there you can change either for Siri or just for phone dialing. Finally, there's the one for format and that's the one i am trying. It does change the default voice. I hope i'll be able to tell the difference if it has downloaded the hq voice. My only problem with the Australian voice is that there's a slight but very annoying hiss or interference sound as the voice starts and stops speaking a word or phrase. I'm hoping this is only in the compact voice since I really like the Australian voice better than either the compact or hq Samantha which I tolerate but will never love (apologies to those who like Samantha). -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. RE: Is the upgrade worth it
No one can tell you whether you should or should not upgrade. You've seen the comments about the problem areas, if they amount to a big enough drawback for you, then don't upgrade. I think all the major issues have been talked about, so if there are no deal breakers in what you have seen on this list, then upgrade, or wait and see what fixes Apple comes out with in the next few months. Thoughts after upgrading to iOs 6
Hello all, Well, I updated last night to iOS six, and I must say over all, I love it. I was nervous as I'm Sure most of you were also about updating, but I like a lot o the new implementations. I like the new touch typing features with the delete key, and the shift key, etc. It seems as though voice over, is more rapidly responsive to the touch of your finger around the screen, and that when you go to unlock your phone now, it seems as though your phone also responds a little faster now also. I haven't really noticed any of the bugs that yall are having myself, running an iPhone 4S. I have noticed that Vo when in the phone app says unsuccessful calls now instead of missed calls. When I send a text, not using Seri but typing it out, that when I send it, I do get the sent message sound as well as for emails, and Facebook posts when posting through the integration feature. I haven't tried out Vo on a call yet. However, I have noticed that when using the compact with Vo, using U.S English, she sounds a little more shakier on pronouncing some words and letters like reply and the letter y. Haven't tried the don't disturb feature yet. So from what little bugs I've discovered, I love it. They are minor, and not anything I can't live with. I say for me its a lot more positive than negative. Shane. Sent from my iPhone -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: What happened to the speaker volume control
I don't see this with an iPhone4. Is this only available in 4S and up? Thanks. Now when you are in a call, take the phone away from your ear so that the call switches to Speakerphone. If the call volume is louder than necessary, lower it with the volume buttons on the side of the phone. You have to make sure of course that you didn't disable this feature in Settings and Sounds. Now when the call volume is comfortable and VO is still not loud enough, bring your phone as close as possible without engaging the proximity sensor. Now flick the rotor to volume and then flick up with one finger and this will increase the volume for Voiceover relative to the call volume. If you put this all the way to between 90% and 100% and I guess if you are not also hard of hearing, you should hear Voiceover just fine. Re: Using the Australian voice as default
I am running the Australian hq voice and it does pretty much eliminate the hiss I had in her compact voice. But I didn't seem to get the hq voice until I reset my iPhone even though I waited a while and tried turning compact voice on and off first. But don't do this unless you have access to iTunes because I can confirm that if you reset you won't be able to turn on voiceover by yourself even if you try tripple click home! I knew the problem wasn't a sound problem or that the phone wasn't on because my time chime apps that I have set up were going off and announcing the time. Unless there are unforseen problems, I'm staying with the Australian voice. As for music you will have to subscribe to the iTunes Match service. As for apps you can only back up the documents and data for each app, not the apps themselves. Time chime apps
I am using Westminster Chimes (not the lite version but the oter one) which has more than one style to choose from and can be set as far as how much of the day and how often it chimes; the chimes are really nice not synthetic or tinny sounding. Then I use the chime app and have it set to voice so that I also get the time announced. As I recall, besides setting up in the app, you may have to do something in notifications for one or both of them, so if it doesn't work immediately you should experiment. I really like both of them. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. RE: Battery Draining Issue.
So, that is roughly 5 hours of use, any Emails and/or phone calls during that time? So, if I'm right in adding up your hours, you used 60 percent of your battery in 5 hours. That should mean you would get 8 hours if you drained the battery, or something close to that. I often used to double press the home key when my phone was locked and I was playing an audio book. This always brought up the playback controls like Previous, Play/Pause, next as well as volume and Airplay. I always found this an easy and quick method to Pause an audio book or Podcast if somebody came to the door or when I just wanted to stop it for another reason as I didn't have to unlock my phone. I really don't know why Apple would get rid of this as it was such a convenient way to get quick access to playback controls, volume and Airplay. I think, and this is just my thoughts, that Apple kept the requirement to use your Apple ID and password for free apps so they can know which apps belong to you. However, I was puzzled today when, on two occasions, I went in and bought free books and was asked on both for my PW. Is this odd, inconsistent behaviour, or is it what is supposed to happen? RE: Tactile screen protectors for iPhone 5?
Hello: We are waiting for our iPhone 5 to arrive as well as materials so that we can begin production on the screen protectors. We have no diffinitive date yet when they will be up on our site. I can however if you would prefer, keep your email address on file and notify you as soon as they are available for purchase. Also, feel free to check our web site and Twitter, because all news about new product releases goes there first. Thank you for your interest in our products! The subject line says it all. I've checked the at guys website and speeddots website and I realize it has been less than a week since the iPhone 5 came out. Just wondered if anybody knew any more about it than I do, which wouldn't take much since i only know they aren't being offered at this point. I thought they really didn't matter that much but I do notice a difference when I use my iPhone 5 without the tactile protector vs my iPhone 4S with the tactile protector so I must be unconsciously using the dots for some amount of orientation. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
