On the other hand i've seen cases where even big streets in a city aren't covered by OSM, i really wish that Blindsquare could use google maps instead of the sucky OSM. I haven't checked cities in simulation mode and i doubt that i would understand if i did and besides, it looks as though blindsquare sees streets and so on, it just doesn't announce them automatically no matter what i do. I've more or less given up on Blindsquare because either it's the app or more likely it's me who's too stupid to use the app so have stopped using it. /Krister 15 okt 2013 kl. 21:18 skrev Ari Moisio ar...@iki.fi: Hi Strange... do you live in a city or at countryside? VO not holding focus.
HI, I think there is a genuine problem, using ios7 on my iPhone 4s. For example, one of my pleasures in life is to do the Cryptic Crossword in the Gardian, most days: until now, I have been able to do this using the online app that is used on the website of the paper together with vo. However, this has become increasingly flaky. This morning, it seems, that I cannot do it at all! I don't undrstand why this should have got worse, but it does eem to have done so. I have performed a reset, the one with the power and home buttons, but this hasn't fixed anything. Also, when sending a message, such as this one, I type vip into the to field and am offered the address for this list, but once havingt selected it, especially, when using my BT keyboard, I cannot move away from that field, I have to touch the screen to get vo to focus anew and then I can use the arrow keys or flick to find the edit field for the subject line. I know that people have mentioned the problems with focusing, here on this list before, I just wanted to say that I am still finding this, after having played with the latest update since the first day it came out. I wanted to give it time to see what was a bug and what was user error, and I have to say that this is definitely not user error. Neither do I think it a bug for non vo users,, so it is unlikely to be addressed by apple, unless we make them aware of it. However, I am always loath to submit a suspected bug before I have assured myself that others are also experiencing the same thing. So, is anyone else have problems with vo holding focus? TIA, Sandy. Re: VO not holding focus.
Hi again, A year ago, I had planned to sell my old iPhone 4 when I got my new 4s. However, because I use these devices as my computer. Reading books, doing crosswords, searching the net, email and all that stuff, I decided to hold on to the old phone to share out the battery power. I decided not to update the 4 to ios7, it has, of course, downloaded, but is sitting waiting for me to give the go ahead. Well, having started life as an ios7 fan, and I do still like many of the bells and whistles, I have to say that for many of my favourite activities, I am going back to my old 4. I mentioned, in the below message, that I can not longer do the Guardian Cryptic Crossword on my 4s with 7. Well, I just took a look on the 4 and what do you think, I can do the CW just as I always could. So, this is definitely a 7 bug for VO and it is, as far as I can judge, something that affects many applications and website functions. Finally, I have turned off all the relevant settings that will drain the battery on my 44s running 7, and still find that the battery drains at an alarming rate! pity 'tis true, but until these issues are addressed, I shall be using my old 4 for the forseeable future. Re: VO not holding focus.
Sandy, have you tried turning on reduced motion in settings, general, accessibility? Your second query is actually a genuine bug that was discovered at the time iOS 7 was released. Not sure when Apple will if at all fix this but I can sympathize with how frustrating this is, since this used to work prior to iOS 7. The reason I am not experiencing so many genuine bugs as the rest of you is simply because of how I use my phone, which is also a 4s also running 7. First of all I use the touch screen entirely along with Siri. So that's the bluetooth keyboard bug out the window for me at least. As for focus issues in general this is mostly resolved with reduced motion turned on. Other times I just learn to live with it. Just my £0.02 worth. TIA, Sandy. I only wish they would fix the problem of it being on speaker when it is up to the ear, I hate my office hearing my phone calls because I can't get the silly phone to go to the earpiece. RE: Any problems people have with the iPhone 5C
My wife got her 5C yesterday and I have been helping her set it up. The speaker sounds nicer than the 5, it gets better battery life on some things, and works like a charm. The back is a composite material that is very slippery, so having a case for it is almost a must. It's a tiny bit heavier, but you hardly notice. I even think the microphone call quality Is marginally better than the 5, which wouldn't be hard to do. Thanks all for the help. Re: The iPhone 5S Motion Sensors Are Totally Screwed Up - gizmodo.com
I had a leveling app. It was free except, I can't remember the name. It did let you set the calibration. You started out placing your iPhone even if it was in a case on a flat surface and double tapping the calibrate button. Then you were prompted to place your iPhone on it's side with the up/down buttons on the top and again double tapping the calibrate button and then place your iPhone on standing up with the lock switch on the top right and double tapping the calibrate button. The iPhone was then calibrated and gave a containing tone to let you know it was level. They make note of the fact that although the app could come very close it should only be used for things like leveling pictures and non creditable jobs. It might even be in the apps in my apps folder. If I find it, I'll post it's name. As I recall, it was even free but I seem to think it was a part of a tools package. The other apps weren't accessible. --- Regards, Alan Go Chicago Bears in 2013! Teenagers; Tired of being harassed by your stupid parents? Act now! Move out. Get a job. RE: VO not holding focus.
Hi Sandy, If the battery drain on your 4S is so great then you probably have an app somewhere which causes that. Battery on my 4S is at least as good and probably a bit better with iOS 7. Also, Rob from the Today in iOS Podcast did a test with an iPhone 4 which he upgraded to iOS 7 and an iPhone 4S which he hadn't upgraded. He charged both devices up to 100%, he removed all apps from the app switcher and I can't remember if he said whether Bluetooth was on, but in any case, both phones had the same things turned on and so on. He then let the phones sit there locked and not really using them and he found that after a few days the battery on the iPhone 4 with iOS 7 was still above 70% and the 4S with iOS 6 was at I think 22%. Spotting what causes battery drain can be tough, you almost have to do a complete restore to factory settings and set up the phone as new, then without putting anything on it in terms of apps see if the battery drain problem has gone away. If it has, then put on one or 2 apps at a time and each time make sure you use said apps and observe the battery. It's a long process, but just about the only way to do this. Finally, I have turned off all the relevant settings that will drain the battery on my 44s running 7, and still find that the battery drains at an alarming rate! pity 'tis true, but until these issues are addressed, I shall be using my old 4 for the forseeable future. reading kindle books
Hi, I am reading my first Kindle book in the app. But I am afraid I have made an error in turning the page turn animator off, but now I can't find settings in the app. I just thought it would be a visual thing and I wouldn't need it turned on. Even so, I am using an older focus 40 Braille display and can't seem to turn pages with this app in the way I do it in Ibooks. So how do I turn pages, and do I need to change that setting to on, and how can I go back to settings? It doesn't appear now that the book has been opened. It's not showing up in Menus. Any ideas, I'm probably missing the obvious but I do that sometimes, sigh. Thanks, Patti -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. To load the books into the iOS device for playback use the following instructions. 1. If not in a ZIP archive format. You should compress the directory holding the books files into a ZIP file. 2. Connect the iOS device to your computer with a USB cable. 3. Open the iTunes application and select the iOS device button at the right of the main window. 4. select the Apps radio button on the main screen. 5. At the bottom of the Apps screen is a section titled File Sharing with a column list of apps. One of those will be the BARDmobile app select it. 6. Press the Add. button located in the bottom right of the screen. This will give you a dialog to select the ZIP file from step one. The book will then be added to the app. You may need to restart BARDmobile to see the new book. NOTE: At this time the BARDmobile app will only play DAISY/NISO 2005 books. Other DAISY formats such as DAISY 2.02 and ePub 3 will simply fail to load. On 10/13/2013 06:24 AM, Thom Spittle wrote: If you have dropbox, you shold be able to transfer it to the phone. Hi all. So, I added some books to my wishlist like I always do from the website on my computer. Before when I'd do this I'd go to the ap on my phone, into my wishlist and download them. But, now, when I go into the ap, they're not there. I know they've been added, but they're not there. I've closed the ap using the ap switcher... reopened it... but still nothing. Any suggestions? Re: VO not holding focus.
Hi, Sandy. Allow me to second Chris' suggestion about the reduce motion setting in accessibility. I don't know how much vision you have, but this is strictly a visual effect and, besides somewhat reducing battery life, I found just the same problems you did when reduce motion was off. Once I turned it on, the problems seem to be either resolved or so close to being resolved that I don't notice them. Note that this isn't just a touch screen thing, as you note, the keyboards had the same issue as do braille displays. Secondly, as to batteries, besides Sieghard's suggestion about applications, it may be worth giving an external battery a try. These have grown much smaller and much cheaper over the past few years, and you can triple your iPhone battery life for €30 or so if you don't mind carrying a small device around. HTH. TIA, Sandy. Re: reading kindle books
Hi Patty, If you see the Home button in the upper left hand corner, double tap on it. If not, open the Kindle menu with a single finger double tap and then find the Home button in the upper left hand corner. Once the home Kindle screen is opened, in the bottom doc the second tab from the lower left hand corner is the settings tab. Double tap on it. I checked my settings for automatic page turning and it is toggled off. I'm not sure if this applies to the Focus Blue, but with my Braille Note I need to perform a pass through gesture of pressing ddots 4-5-6 and enter together before using dots 2-4-6 with the space bar. What about using a 3 finger swipe from right to left to turn the page? HTH. If you have the two rocker bars on the front of the display, you should be able to use the right one. Press this down to advance a horizontal page. This also works in iBooks. Also, as an alternative, you can use dots 1-3-5-space to advance a page. You should be inside the text when you perform these commands. Verizon iPhone 5/5s users
Hi all, I'm excited to announce my iPhone 5s should be arriving today. This is my first 4g/lte device. Does the sym card come already installed? Was the set up process fairly straight forward? I read the directions found here: http://businessportals.verizonwireless.com/support/how_to_use/iphone-5-upgrade.html and they look pretty easy. Any tips to go along with those instructions? :) This isn't my first set up, but like I said, my first 4g/lte device. Fingers crossed, I'm mighty excited! Off to back up my device and back up my Mac for good measure. ;) Traci -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Verizon iPhone 5/5s users
Hi Tracy, My 5S finally showed up this morning after I found out yesterday that the UPS delivery guy delivered it to the store here in my town where they sell Apple product. Unfortunately I didn't realize this until shortly before 6 PM when they were already closed so he couldn't get it back from them until this morning. Oh well, a bit more anticipation built-up never hurt anybody. Anyhow, the setup process is about as simple and easy as it can get and Apple's It just works definitely applies here. I took the phone out of the box and even before I turned it on put my new Nano SIM into the phone. Tracy, I am in Canada and while I know ATT and T-Mobil use SIM cards, I don't think Verizon does as they are still a CDMA carrier. I have to leave it somebody else to confirm his and to explain how your phone number is activated, but I assume it might not be that different as with a SIM where you have to do it by signing in on the Verizon website. After I inserted my SIM I plugged in the Lightning cable since while a new phone usually has a good amount of charge, I just wanted to make sure it had power and also because I know plugging in the cable turns the phone on. After a little bit the phone vibrated and I knew it was at that point on. Another advantage when Voiceover is not on yet is that if you plug the phone in it will vibrate once when it comes on. I waited a maybe 10 more seconds to make sure it was ready, then I pressed the home key 3 times and Voiceover came on. I selected English from the list of languages, then my location/country and so on. The setup process is very straight forward, you can join your WiFi right there, you are asked to sign in with your Apple Id and then you can enable iCloud, iMessage and Facetime, Find my iPhone, SIRI and all that. The first time I was asked to enter text, I think it was for my WiFi, I right away turned the rotor to typing mode and selected touch typing since touch typing is not enabled by default. It probably took me 6 or 8 minutes to go through the entire setup process. You are also asked I think at the end if you want to set up as a new phone or restore from a backup. I chose new phone here, but I am now going to restore from my encrypted iTunes backup. Once the setup process was done I had a notification right away that a newer version of iOS was available. I went into Settings and installed the iOS 7.02 update. While it was doing the iOS 7 update I signed into my mobile carrier's website to activate my new Nano SIM which I had already received a few days ago. I use Koodo here in Canada which is a MVNO owned by Telus. I clicked on Mobile Phones and then on Change Phone. From here I had 2 radio buttons to choose from, one was Upgrade my Phone and one was New SIM Card in my current phone. I chose the first, clicked next and was now asked to enter the SIM Card Number. I had already written that down so I just copied it and pasted it, clicked next, confirmed one more time and it was done. At that point the update was also done and when my phone came back on Voiceover was talking and my new SIM worked. I now first went into Voiceover settings and downloaded the Enhanced Quality voice for US English, then the Australien one and then I added German and downloaded the high quality german voice. Now after I send this I will restore from my encrypted iTunes backup. At first I thought I start over, but I already had gotten rid of as many apps as I could by uninstalling those I don't use a lot. I also unsynced all my music and photos because I wanted a smaller backup and quicker restore process. This way I get back the important apps, my email accounts will be restored as will be my Favorites in the Phone app and my text messages. I use Office 365 which is hosted Exchange from Microsoft for my business email and Outlook.com for my personal accounts so as soon as these accounts will be restored all my email and contacts will sync to my phone again and there is nothing I will have to do here to get all of that back. OK, good luck with your 5S, it's unbelieveable fast and everything seems to happen instantly. Oh, you are also asked to set up Touch ID during the initial setup. You can choose to do so later, but I did it and I used my right thumb. It asked me about 10 or maybe more to put my thumb on the sensor, it's a good idea to rotate it slightly and put different areas, just the tip, a bit further back etc. It will tell you when it took enough readings and that too seems to work extremely well and it's super fast. Lastly, I just received a call and I picked it up with a 2-finger double tap. I put the phone to my ear and to my delight I had no issues like I did on my 4S with the call going to speakerphone or switching back and forth. So far I couldn't be more pleased with this phone.
RE: Verizon iPhone 5/5s users
Hi Tracy, It probably is preinstalled. Just in case, if it is not, here is how it goes in: Take the little wire tool and feel along the right side of the phone (opposite from the volume buttons). You will feel the SIM tray and beneath it is a tiny hole. Put the wire tool in it and push firmly, this will pop the SIM tray out. Make sure you keep the touch screen facing you and that you don't turn the SIM tray upside down, it is smooth on top and has a ridge underneath. Your Nano SIM is tiny, but if you have good feeling in your fingers, you can feel that one corner of the SIM card is cut off a bit. The SIM Card goes into the tray with that corner facing out and up (towards the top of the phone). The SIM tray should slide in easily and the last little bit requires a slight push to lock it into place, if you put the SIM in the wrong way I don't think it will go in. Re: wifi and cell
Cellular only kicks in when wifi is not present, but if your phone is seeing networks it cannot use, you will have problems. Just disable wifi completely and see if things work better. You could also try a network settings reset; that will erase all bluetooth and wifi pairings/networks and passwords, but it might clear up your wifi problem. RE: wifi and cell
iOS falls back to cellular data automatically when you are not connected to a WIFI network, but if you're connected to a problematic network this may not happen. I'd start by unplugging your wireless router and plugging it back in. What does settingsWIFI show in terms of the signal strength for your wireless network? Can other devices successfully access your wireless network? If they can't, then the problem lies with your wireless network and you should consider resetting your router or changing settings on it or replacing the router. If they can, try resetting network settings on your iPhone via settingsgeneralresetreset network settings. Then try reconnecting to the network. latest IOs 7 update ??
Hi, I’m finally getting accustomed to the 5s. I have to say I am impressed with it. I have not installed the latest iOs 7 update yet. I think there were some bugs, such as the alphabet disappearing from the phone keypad, but I can’t recall if there was anything else significant that bothered users with it. I am happy that I did make the move from the 4 to the 5s. Thanks, Crystal -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. App Store not seeing U.S. or USA
I was trying to help a gentleman create an apple ID here in Los Angeles California he was prompted to pick the store in a picker item. The stores started with Algeria and listed multiple countries but in the letter u we did not find the United States of America or USA. At one point the choices started speaking in other languages. I’m not sure what to do to get his phone to see the U.S. store. It’s a puzzler. All the best, Brian -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Verizon iPhone 5/5s users
Unfortunetly I have to wait until 2015 to upgrade, who knows they will probably have the 6 out by then. I did find while a bit annoying, but a resonable solution that I can deal with for the 4s speaker problem, I learned this from an apple vis user, as soon as you answer the phone before saying hello, put the phone up to your ear, then take it away, then put it to your ear again and say hello, you should be fine, this so far has worked 100 percent of the time for me, of course unless I forget to do it. - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2013 2:32 PM Subject: RE: Verizon iPhone 5/5s users Hi Tracy, It probably is preinstalled.
Hi, If you're seeing 3g in the status bar where you would usually see the signal strength of your WIFI connection, you are not actually connected to WIFI. I agree with others who have mentioned that iOS won't switch over to 3g if your wireless is problematic, but in every situation where I've scene this, I've still been given the signal strength of said wifi network as opposed to 3G. How long are you waiting for SIRI to respond? Things are always going to be a bit slower over 3g as a recording of your voice needs to be sent to Apple for processing. Cheers, Ben. Re: Verizon iPhone 5/5s users
Tracy, Verizon does not use a Sim card. You don't have to worry about that. Sent from my iPhone On Oct 16, 2013, at 1:27 PM, Traci Duncan our4p...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, thanks for the replies.

RE: wifi and cell
Good evening Regina. I have read a few of the messages in this thread so far. And, if your wireless works fine inside your home, outside near your home, and not at the exercise room, I'm asuming here that this reference to Brighthouse is the exercise room itself or a public gym, is it possible that the public wifi uses username and password authentication. In most cases where a public wifi requires any sort of authentication username and password you are prompted for it the first time you open up a web browser on your laptop, therefore, what happens if you go to the exercise room with your iPhone with its wifi enabled, and open up its web browser, are you prompted for credentials. Just a suggestion/thought. Please keep us updated. Re: Verizon iPhone 5/5s users
Verizon does use a sim card for the 5 and 5s. This stores phone numbers and other information. It comes already installed in the phone. If you feel on the right side of the phone when in portrait you'll feel a very tiny whole about halfway up the phone. If you ever need to replace the phone it can be taken out of the old one and added to the new one. As I said before it is very easy to set up. Just call Verizon from a different phone. I also unsynced all my music and photos because I wanted a smaller backup and quicker

RE: latest IOs 7 update ??
Hi Crystal, Unless you really need the alphabet on the keypad there is no reason why you shouldn't install the 7.02 update since it's mainly a security fix. I never cared for hearing the alphabet when I touch the numbers since I have this internalized to the point where I don't really have to think about which letters are on which number and I always thought that most people would. On iOS, that authentication tends to pop up when you select the wifi network in settings. However, VO sometimes has focus problems for a minute or so once the page appears, so be patient with it. In most cases where a public wifi requires any sort of authentication username and password you are prompted for it the first time you open up a web browser on your laptop, therefore, what happens if you go to the exercise room with your iPhone with its wifi enabled, and open up its web browser, are you prompted for credentials. Re: Transferring BARD books to your phone [was Re: Interesting dellema with the bard ap.]
Hi, Zipping a book means you can copy all the files at once, which is harder to do with iTunes file sharing. Also, if you leave a braille file zipped, BARD will treat it as a single, multi-volume book rather than treating each braille file as its own separate book. Not even with tracking with headings on? Even appel's accessibility people saw dongs but at different frequencies than me. Very curious. SO, I am curious if any of you has seen this and approached them with this. When I turn on tracking with headings my iPhone 5 with iOS 7.02 gives off a series of dongs kind of like when you try to flick past the last element on the screen. FOr me they repeat at constant intervals when stationary and I think also when I am walking but can't bet on this. Time is about 4 sec. This is regardless wether I am navigating a route or not. They appear to think that, if phone is stationary, this sound repeats more and more oftenn and suppose it is to remind you that you are using GPS and draining your battery. THis does not make sense to me and I personally think this dong constantly sounding off is either a bug with the way my phone works or in iOS 7.\My husband's phone is giving off sae regular repeating sounds when stationary. Haven't tried moving around with it. Will do so soon. Any thoughts, Ioana Sent from my iPhon -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
