Something along those lines might work if the recording would be played while a Mac running mavericks with offline dictation listens. Have not tried this feature yet. Re: The potential of the dictation function?
Hello, Sandra. Your points are well taken indeed. One of my doctors routinely phones in a report about my visit, and the speech recognition software from which a written report is generated is, he says, first-rate. He once told me it never made a mistake, and I managed to suppress my disbelief. However, Speech recognition is getting better all the time. I have sometimes used silly speech patterns in an attempt to trip up some engines and am pleasantly surprised that often, they are on to my game. Google Maps; was: Apple Maps Question.
Speaking of spoken turn by turn directions, I loaded a route into my phone the other day using Google Maps. I was at home and on Wi-Fi when I did it. I forgot that cellular data was turned off and began my 30 minute trip. I had spoken turn by turn directions for the entire trip. I discovered that data was off when I went to create a new route to another destination and was told to turn data on. I already knew that Google loaded a map of the requested route into the device but didn't think that the audio for that trip would be loaded. It was a very pleasant surprise indeed. I'm also guessing that this would work as long as you don't go too far off of the planned route. Now, this has me curious. If I had an iPod touch with an external gps receiver, would I have the same result? Someone might try it some time to find out. RE: battery drainage
If you're out of wi-fi range you'd be using cellular data anyway. That being the case; turning off WI-FI will cause any additional SIRI commands to be sent over the mobile network and could result in additional network access charges. Point is, if you plan on using SIRI to any extent you probably do not want to disable WI-FI. Holland's Boy, Bill - "Clothes make the man. RE: Please explain VO's "swipe with one finger" gesture
Another way to think of it is that you want to flick a piece of dust off the screen. Your finger should be moving before it contacts the screen, otherwise VO thinks you are touching. Think of it as a glancing blow, or that your finger is a golf club and you are trying to hit a golf ball sitting on the screen but only barely making contact with the screen-no divots please, grin. Also, keep the flick in as close to the same spot on the screen. Do not flick near the top and as you flick move your finger down the screen so that by the time you have done your fifth or sixth flick you are near the bottom. Try to stay in one area. The beauty of the flick or swipe gesture is that whatever you hear VoiceOver say after you have flicked, is where the VoiceOver cursor is and so a quick double-tap anywhere on the screen will activate that item. Re: Please explain VO's "swipe with one finger" gesture
I assume you mean the one-finger flick, to move from item to item? First, don't make the move too big - a half inch to an inch is enough, I find. Second, don't put your finger down and then flick or swipe, as that usually leads to Voiceover thinking you are touching rather than trying to perform a command. Instead, be making the flick gesture as your finger hits the screen, so that the flick or swipe is interpreted as what you intended from the start and there is less room for ambiguity. It sounds harder than it is, I promise. Finally, make use of Voiceover's practice mode (double tap four fingers, then do that again or do a two-finger scrub to exit this mode). -- Have a great day, Alex mehg...@gmail.com On Feb 10, 2014, at 5:52 PM, Don and Cher Bosch wrote: > It sometimes works, sometimes not. iCloud email versus Apple ID?
Hi all, I'm sending this to the Macvisionaries list as well, so I'm sorry if you get it twice. I was trying to change a friend's Apple ID to his iCloud address, just to keep things simple, and planned to do the same for my own account later today. However, it disallowed it, since "the email address cannot be in a domain owned by Apple". A bit of googling, and I find that your iCloud account is an Apple ID in itself. I'm now thoroughly confused. I have a Gmail address tied to my Apple ID, and I have an @icloud.com address. Do I have two Apple IDs now? Do I have one with multiple addresses? I don't know of anything for iOS that will do this without a braille display. Re: Alarm Clock setting when you don't have Siri
If you have Siri, just have Siri set the alarm for you. Just hold down the home button until you hear the tone and say, set an alarm for 6 AM. She'll come back and say, I've set an alarm for 6 AM. Of course, you can have Siri set it for any time you want. Thanks for the advice. I already tried doing a reset. It didn't work. The phone is out of warrantee already. Ok, there's TV guide Mobile: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tv-guide-mobile/id333647776?mt=8 which is very handy for me. There's also Zap2it.com . I don't know if they have an app; I just use the website. HtH, teresa On Feb 10, 2014, at 6:07 AM, Jordan Norregaard wrote: > I love my iPad, and I loved the iPhone when i had one. Correction. the problem you may run into is if you have more than one bluetooth device that has been synced with the sound link. Yes, it most certainly is possible. I'd suspect a problem with the battery itself in this case. RE: battery drainage
Hi John, If I had an iPhone which couldn't get me through the day (assuming normal usage without using GPS for a couple of hours) I would do a Factory reset and set up the phone as a new device. I would then check for a couple of days with no apps installed, but with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. If the problem was still there I would call Apple to arrange for a replacement since it is not normal that the battery should only last 5 or 6 hours until you were constantly using it as in 4 hours worth of phone calls and 2 or 3 hours of surfing, playing video or games etc. Regards, Sieghard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of John Diakogeorgiou Sent: Sunday, February 09, 2014 7:44 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: battery drainage It is still possible that their is a defect in the persons phone. RE: Alarm Clock setting when you don't have Siri
Hi Robin, If you just want to set an Alarm there really is no need to get any extra app. Yes, there are probably hundreds of Alarm apps out there, but the alarm function that is part of the Clock app in iOS works perfectly fine. 1. Open the Clock app 2. Double tap the Alarm tab (second from the left across the bottom) 3. Double tap "Add" at the top right of the screen 4. Swipe right until you come to the hour picker control, swipe up or down with one finger to set it to the hour you want (it always displays the time when you opened the Clock). Swipe right again and adjust the minutes in the same way. Lastly, swipe right again and specify AM or PM. 5. Swipe right and double tap "Repeat, Never" if you want to repat the alarm on certain days, you have a list of each day of the week, if you want, for example, the same alarm from Monday to Friday, double tap on those days to select them, then tap on Back at the top left to go bac to the main Alarm screen. 6. Label: Alarm - here you can give your alarm a different name/label. 7. Sound - here you can pick from the available alarm sounds or you can pick a song from your music library. 8. Snooze: this is on by default, turn it off if you don't want the snooze function to repeate the alarm. 9. When you are done double tap "Save" at the top right of the screen and that's it. It's simple and straight forward, if you are happy with no repeat, snooze and the default sound all you have to do is set the time and tap Save. Any alarms you create will stay in your list of available alarms, if they are not repeating they go off at the specified time and then are turned off, but you can just double tap on any alarm and turn it back on if you want to use it again. This way if you have certain time when you get up, for example, 6 AM, 6:30 AM, 7 AM, 7:30 AM, 8 AM etc. you could create an alarm for each of these times and then all you have to do is pull up the Clock app, Alarm will stay selected unless you change it and then double tap on the alarm you want to turn it on, then press Home to get back to your home screen. If you have an active alarm it will say "Alarm Set" in the status bar, unfortunately Apple does not include the time there which I think would be a good idea. If you want to Edit or delete an existing alarm, maybe change the time or the sound it uses, just double tap on "Edit at the top left of the screen, then you have a Delete switch next to each alarm, double tap it to turn it on, then double tap again to delete. Re: Alarm Clock setting when you don't have Siri
It is very easy to set an alarm in the native app. Just go to clock and choose alarm at the bottom. Now just choose your hours and minutes from the pickers by flipping your finger up and down. You can set multiple days and different alarm sounds if you like, but not necessary if you just want a one time alarm. In my opinion, a separate app for an alarm is overkill. Maximum voice memo length, was: RE: The potential of the dictation function?
Hi Brian, There is no limit, you can record until your iPhone's available storage is full. If you had a 64 Gb iPhone this would probably mean you could record for a couple of weeks. One way to find out is to do a 10 or 15 minute recording, then check the file size, multiply it by 5 or 4 to get approximately how big a file for a 1 hour recording would be and then divide your available storage by that file size. Sandra, your post is an example of the imaginative and far-reaching messages I enjoy reading on this list. I am so glad folks are experimenting with the dictation option. I admit to distrusting it since it often makes errors which users do not catch through proofreading, and this sometimes makes them appear careless. Nevertheless, I agree it is a very worthwhile service. Perhaps more than any other group, It benefits those who have difficulty typing or cannot do so at all. Re: How to update IOS" on original iPod touch
Hi, Personally, I have absolutely no idea why you would want to do an erase all content and settings on the iPod, only to update to iOs6 afterwards, where you also have the option of backing up (or in this case not backing up) the settings. Perhaps someone can chime in if I'm missing something. To make things simple: 1. Connect the touch to a computer and launch iTunes if it hasn't already opened. 2. Update to iOS6 which is the latest version of iOS that this touch can take. Don't back anything up. 3. Setup and then use the touch as per normal. Your wifes email should be unaffected as in no changes will be made to any messages remotely, but the messages on the touch will be removed. Cheers, Ben. how does one know if shuffle is on or off
Hello list I have an iPod touch 4th gen and if I remember correctly the shuffle button showed on or off in previous versions of the firmware but the last few upgrades do not announce if it is on or off. Make it easy for yourself and restore the iPod back to factory settings. Go to settings general reset erase all content and settings. Then connect to iTunes to set it all up again. Next to update click the check for updates button and follow the instructions.
