groups in contacts

2014-02-15 Thread Jim Ruby
Wow, figured out you can't create groups in contacts in ios 7, anyone know
of a good app to to this, hopefully has more features and can replace or
work with in the contacts app?

Thanks.

Re: groups in contacts

2014-02-15 Thread Richard Turner
I use Group Email.
You can create distribution lists, add attachments, and even create a template
if you use the same text a lot.
It takes a little getting used to, but it is completely VoiceOver friendly and
the developer responds to questions pretty quickly.
Here is the link to the app in the US app store:

Re: Cleaner

2014-02-15 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello,

For what it's worth, one of the reviewers of Cleaner said it used to be a
different app, but the creators changed it to Cleaner, and the reviewer is
quite sure it's a scam app. I don't know any more about it than that, but it
sounds like it would be good to research this before installing it.

Best,

Cellular Data Off Notification

2014-02-15 Thread SSEric

I keep getting notice when I opene apps.cellular data is off for this app; you
can turn on cellular data by going to settings; okay.

I have disabled data intentionally. These notices occur randomly, not each time
I open an app. Is there a way to stop them?

Thanks!

Thank you, but I also need to send text messages to the groups so this is why I
would like to be with in the contacts app either replacing it or working with
in the app like an add on. I would probably need to text to the group more
often then I'd be emailing.

Hi, Anna and others. I did install it, and, though it seems to work pretty
well, I have noticed that my memory needs cleaning a lot more hi, Anna and
others. I did install Cleaner, and, though it seems to work pretty well and the
family excess of all, I have also noticed that my phone appears to be running a
little slower. Thanks for the info, Anna. I think I will uninstall and try
something else.

Keith thanks for the info, Anna. I did install the program, and it seems to be
fairly accessible. However, I have noticed that my phone will slow down fairly
quickly after cleaning it. It seems to be quite a bit slower than it was before
I installed the app.

I think I will uninstall and look for another cleaning solution. Thanks again.

can catch events on UsA channel and NBC sports. To watch the streams

I believe that hockey is usually on USA, and many complete replays
are available on the website. I don’t currently have cable service,
so have been watching various videos on the NBC site to catch up

If someone has tried the NBC app, is it any more accessible than it

can catch events on UsA channel and NBC sports. To watch the streams

I believe that hockey is usually on USA, and many complete replays

If someone has tried the NBC app, is it any more accessible than it

Sorry this is after-the-fact but anyone listening to the serious XM broadcast
of this mornings Russia game realizes it originated with Westwood One. There is
a Westwood One app available that works well with iOS seven. Also various radio
stations around the country including WF AAN in New York carry today's game and
I assume the Mac may carry other US hockey games.

would like to be with in the contacts app either replacing it or working with
in the app like an add on. I would probably need to text to the group more
often then I'd be emailing.

I use Group Email.
You can create distribution lists, add attachments, and even create a template
if you use the same text a lot.
It takes a little getting used to, but it is completely VoiceOver friendly and
the developer responds to questions pretty quickly.
Here is the link to the app in the US app store:

adjust volumes

2014-02-15 Thread Jim Ruby
It seems I am having a heck of a time keeping my volumes the way I want
them, does anyone have any tips?

I do have the ringer volume at 100% where I wish them to be and have it set
so the volume buttons will not affect it.

Adjusting the tones and other volumes like text and the start/stop sound
when using siri or dictation always change when I change voiceover volume
and yes I have tried to set vo with the volume buttons and roter with same
results.

I must be missing something or not doing something quite right, or I am just
doomed to have a phone with volumes that will be changing all over the
place. Also is there a way to not have the audio duck when voiceover is
speaking if ones does not want this?

Thanks.

Westwood One Apps?

2014-02-15 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hmmm, someone mentioned Westwood One apps. I checked in the app store and there
are two listed, Westwood One Mobile Pro Football Preview and westwood One
Entertainment Quickflash. Unfortunately, when I go to check them out, I get no
search results. Is there another name for these Westwood One apps? I
understand why the pro football one wouldn't be available now.

Thanks,

Reading AccessNote Files on a Windows Machine

2014-02-15 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

Amy Mason's review of an old version of AccessNote says that files
produced by AccessNote look oddly spaced when read on a Windows
machine. This may have to do with the different ways Windows and iOS
handle end of line characters. Has anyone had experience reading
AccessNote files on a Windows machine? All thoughts are welcome.

Thank you.

RE: Reading AccessNote Files on a Windows Machine

2014-02-15 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
I just opened a file from AccessNote that I had put on my DropBox account on
my PC using NoteTab Pro.
I'll paste it in here in hopes that the formatting doesn't get too messed up
by Outlook. It looks fine to me in NoteTab Pro.

How The Internet Started

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com
did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot.
And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg.
Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her husband, Why dost thou travel so far from
town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy
tent?

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of
a camel load, but simply said, How, dear?

And Dot replied, I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between
to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling
you who hath the best price.
And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony
Stable (UPS).

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the
drums.
And the drums rang out and were an immediate success.
Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to
move from his tent.
To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were
saying,
Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew.
It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a
language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP).

And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly
take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican
Sybarites, or NERDS.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the
deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going
to that enterprising drum dealer,
Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land.
And indeed did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother
Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say, Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by
others.
And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be
known.
He said, We need a name that reflects what we are.

And Dot replied, Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators.
YAHOO, said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO
Dot Com.

Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid
(GEEK) that he was, soon startedusing Dot's drums to locate things
around the countryside.
It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything
(GOOGLE).

That is how it all began. And that's the truth.

Trouble connecting to wifi with 2 different iPhones

2014-02-15 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. My wife and I are having trouble connecting to my in-law's
wifi network. I have an iPhone 5 and she has a 4. We have tried
restarting our phones, and I have deleted the network and then rejoined
it. I also tried disconnecting the ethernet cable from the router,
waiting 30 seconds, and then connecting again with no change. I am
fairly certain that the wifi is not working since I have tried
updating apps in the App Store, and when I start the updating and then
return 10 to 15 minutes later, the apps have not updated. And the app
update is about 10 MB in size, so it shouldn't take any time at all if
on wifi. Even though the status bars on our phones say that we are
connected, I don't think we really are. Anyone have any ideas? Other
devices in my in-law's house connect just fine, like the computers and
laptops.

Thanks bunch,
Wayne Merritt

RE: Westwood One Apps?

2014-02-15 Thread Richard Turner
Interesting. I get no results for WestWood One.

On their web site they list an audio stream for mobile devices and the
iPhone stream just plays silence.

I also searched in TuneIn Radio Pro for Westwood One and found a Westwood
One Channel 6 English, which also plays nice silence.

It does not show it buffering and shows the seconds in TuneIn Radio, and
nothing is muted, and the volume is up.

Very odd.

If anyone wants to try the streaming link, it is:

A journey through history

Hello iPhoners! I was pretty bored today, waiting to watch the

when i decided to clean out my C-drive. I found three very old
podcasts about the iPhone! They were done through the
Maccessibility/screenless switchers group. The podcasts introduced
the brand new, revolutionary, iPhone 3gs! On my PC their dated
06/28/2009. I wonder if the AppleVis community would be interested in
these podcasts. Its a great look back at iPhone history, back when
everything was new and apps were mostly uncharted territory for us
blind folks...right around the time this very listed was created! If
anyone wants them, drop me a line, or tel me how to submit them to

didn't participate or create the content...I was just lucky enough not

Re: BARD BOOKS ON IPHONE

Denise, do you mean that during the same session, reading will
suddenly jump back a few minutes, causing BARD to repeat text, or do
you mean that when you open a new BARD session that the app will not
remember where you left off and will repeat some material read during
the previous session? I have never had the first problem but have
sometimes had the second. I can't isolate the circumstances that
cause BARD to forget where it has stopped reading during the last

updating apps in the App Store, and when I start the updating and then

update is about 10 MB in size, so it shouldn't take any time at all if

2014-02-15 Thread Alan Paganelli
I really wish that the Bard app would let you start listening to a talking book
on your iPhone and let's say you came in the house and picked up your iPad and
opened the bard app there and hit the play button and the book would start
playing from where you left off on your iPhone. The only way I know how to do
it is to have a copy of the same book on both devices and make note of the time
when you hit the stop button such as 3 hours, 27 minutes. Then when you open
the same book on another device you have to jump to that same exact same time.
It's doable just a pain where you sit.

Re: Trouble connecting to wifi with 2 different iPhones

2014-02-15 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
Chris writes:

Try resetting all network settings by going to settings general reset
reset network settings. Do this on one or both devices and see if this
helps.

I had a similar issue with my 5S, but with my 5S, the phone said that wi-fi
was on and that I was connected to LTE instead of the wi-fi. If I went into
wi-fi under settings, selected the local wi-fi network at my office, and
double-tapped it, I was shown the IP address, which was something like

169.254.xxx.xxx

where xxx was some number that I don't recall at the moment. What's
noteworthy here is that if you encounter a situation like that and notice a
similar IP address, you're not truly connected to the wi-fi or local area
network. I had something similar happen when trying to connect my
Braillenote to wi-fi and ran into this issue. As Chris suggested, you could
try resetting network settings and see what happens. In my case, that
didn't resolve the issue; I had to reset all settings and reconfigure my
phone, which, needless to say, was a pain in the tail. But all of my
settings are back in place, and everything's working satisfactorily.

Hope this helps.

Tom

Re: Reading AccessNote Files on a Windows Machine

2014-02-15 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Craig,

If I remember right, AccessNote files opened in Notepad don't show end-of-line
characters, but they're fine if you open them in WordPad or Word. Since they're
text files, however, Windows normally opens them in Notepad by default, which
is why the problem is readily noticeable.

Best,
Anna

AccessNote files on a Windows machine? All thoughts are welcome.

 Thank you.

This has never happened to me.
It sounds like it may be an issue with one particular title. It is always a
good idea to Email your local Regional Library when this happens and give

usually take care of this kind of thing fairly quickly.

Re: BARD BOOKS ON IPHONE

2014-02-15 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I have had it happen a few times, but infrequently enough that I do not
remember specifically the last incident. As was pointed out by another
poster, it seems to happen more frequently with books that have been
converted from cassette, when a track change announcement is given. But
then, when I get to the point again, that track announcement is not
announced, and the book doesn't skip back. This may be a hard bug for them
to fix, being that it is very inconsistent. Plus, it has happened less
frequently with books that were digital from the beginning.

There are two other possibilities.

First, go to settings, general, VoiceOver, rotor, and make sure characters
is selected. If it is not, that is your problem, and double-tapping it will
change its status to selected.

Second, If the iOS device has not been turned off and then on again for a
while, this could be the problem. Press and hold the power button for a few
seconds until the iOS device says power-off button. Double-tap to have the
iDevice shut down. Wait about 30 seconds. Press and hold the power button
for two to three seconds. Wait between half a minute and a minute for the
iDevice to boot up. Note: if plugged into mains, the iDevice will vibrate
during part of the boot-up process.

Similar to this same question where do you set volumes so that say yu do not

Basically, when you press the volume buttons, whatever is playing will be
adjusted. The simplest way to deal with this is to play something and set
the volume while it's playing. You can set VO and alerts not to be adjusted
 with the volume buttons.

I do have the ringer volume at 100% where I wish them to be and have

Adjusting the tones and other volumes like text and the start/stop

I must be missing something or not doing something quite right, or I
am just doomed to have a phone with volumes that will be changing all

voiceover is speaking if ones does not want this?

Of course, this is the case with all technology. Considering that there are 30

Comcast with i-devices

2014-02-15 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Hi all.

I am going to be helping a friend set up her iPad when she gets it on
Wednesday. She has a gmail account but her primary one is Comcast. When I
googled for information about Comcast it talked mostly about pop but there was
something about an iMap beta. I also found information about apps for Comcast.
Even though she can see, I will need her to work with something that is
accessible for me because I will be helping her over the phone and she really
has to have things explained very concretely. Could somebody with Comcast tell
me how you are setting up your email in Apple mail on the iPhone or iPad or if
you are using an alternative app?

Thanks.

Cheryl

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
This I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord
never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

RE: Reader's Digest Subscription

2014-02-15 Thread Alan Lemly
I don't know if this has been mentioned but you can subscribe to APH's
program to get talking editions of Newsweek and Reader's Digest. There is no
charge for this service provided you are a US citizen and a patron of the
NLS. You just need a digital talking book player that plays NLS content and
a computer to download the magazines. Here's the link that discusses it in
more detail:

Re: adjust volumes

2014-02-15 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
Remember, though, that if you're using IOS 7 and have volume in the rotor,
your VO volume could get stuck at 35 % or lower and can't move it back up.
So watch out.

I may have misspoken. I don't find that setting, either, and I could have
been sure I found it in the past. Sorry about that. You can put the VO
volume in the rotor and adjust it that way, though.

Basically, when you press the volume buttons, whatever is playing will be
adjusted. The simplest way to deal with this is to play something and set
the volume while it's playing. You can set VO and alerts not to be

with the volume buttons.

Adjusting the tones and other volumes like text and the start/stop
sound when using siri or dictation always change when I change
voiceover volume and yes I have tried to set vo with the volume
buttons and roter with same results.

I must be missing something or not doing something quite right, or I
am just doomed to have a phone with volumes that will be changing all

voiceover is speaking if ones does not want this?

Thanks.

A while back, someone on this list mentioned that they had.a bluetooth headset

Re: BARD BOOKS ON IPHONE

2014-02-15 Thread ROBERT CARTER
Hi,

I have also experienced this problem. For me, it tends to happen when I move a
long way backwards in a book. For example, if I fall asleep and the next day, I
back up maybe 30 minutes or so to get back to where I was before falling
asleep, it is likely that at some point while listening, the book will suddenly
jump back to some where in the previous chapter. It is very frustrating and
disconcerting.

RE: adjust volumes

2014-02-15 Thread Jim Ruby
Yes, been careful, but I just wish I could get everything the way I want it
to be, all notifications and things on the loud side so I can hear them and
voice over at nice volume and the ability to adjust the voice in case of
loud environment with out everything going all over the place:).

Hi,
Remember, though, that if you're using IOS 7 and have volume in the rotor,
your VO volume could get stuck at 35 % or lower and can't move it back up.
So watch out.

I may have misspoken. I don't find that setting, either, and I could
have been sure I found it in the past. Sorry about that. You can put
the VO volume in the rotor and adjust it that way, though.

Basically, when you press the volume buttons, whatever is playing
will be adjusted. The simplest way to deal with this is to play
something and set the volume while it's playing. You can set VO and

I do have the ringer volume at 100% where I wish them to be and have

Adjusting the tones and other volumes like text and the start/stop
sound when using siri or dictation always change when I change
voiceover volume and yes I have tried to set vo with the volume
buttons and roter with same results.

I must be missing something or not doing something quite right, or I
am just doomed to have a phone with volumes that will be changing
all over the place. Also is there a way to not have the audio duck
when voiceover is speaking if ones does not want this?

 Thanks.

Re: deleting voicemails on the iphone 5

2014-02-15 Thread Katey Glass
I've seen this as well, especially when I want to delete voice mails entirely
from my iPhone 5s. I'll delete them, and then do a mass delete all, only to
have them come back the next time I go into voice mail. Maybe not all of the
ones I've deleted, but some. So, I again delete them and eventually they all
go.

If it matters I'm using an iPhone 5s, running iOS 7.0.4 on the ATT network.

Re: Reading AccessNote Files on a Windows Machine

2014-02-15 Thread Craig Werner
Thank you, Anna. AccessNote is not alone in not allowing end-of-line
conventions to be switched in the Settings section.

 Hi Craig,

If I remember right, AccessNote files opened in Notepad don't show
end-of-line characters, but they're fine if you open them in WordPad or

Notepad by default, which is why the problem is readily noticeable.

 Hello, everyone.

Amy Mason's review of an old version of AccessNote says that files

AccessNote files on a Windows machine? All thoughts are welcome.

 Thank you.

RE: deleting voicemails on the iphone 5

This is a known issue with ATT and it is apparently carrier related. I have
heard it mentioned and discussed on the Today in iOS Podcast.

I've seen this as well, especially when I want to delete voice mails
entirely from my iPhone 5s. I'll delete them, and then do a mass delete
all, only to have them come back the next time I go into voice mail. Maybe
not all of the ones I've deleted, but some. So, I again delete them and
eventually they all go.

If it matters I'm using an iPhone 5s, running iOS 7.0.4 on the ATT network.

RE: Bluetooth headset with foldable mic mentioned on this list.

2014-02-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ari,

I think several headsets do this, but I can say for sure that my Jabra
Supreme works this way. If you fold the little boom microphone the headset
is not just in standby, but it is turned off. If your phone rings and you
want to pick up with the headset and you don't already have it unfolded and
on your ear, you can just unfold it and that will turn the headset on and
pick up the call. If you are already wearing it on your ear youc an just say
Answer to answer the call or you can push on the main button to
answer/hang up.

The Supreme is definitely a larger unit compared to some others, but I find
it comfortable and it is on your ear, not in your ear. It is loud and clear.
However, it does lack the ability to Play/Pause music or audio books so if I
were buying a new headset now I would probably take a very serious look at
the Plantronics Voyager Legend since it seems to be one of the few single
earpieces if not the only one which has Play/Pause functionality.

Sieghardit

A while back, someone on this list mentioned that they had.a bluetooth
headset with a mic that folded into the headset when not in use. Folding the
mic into the headset would cause it to go into standby or something, and
when unfolded, the headset would be ready to be used with the phone again.
Can anyone remembre the name of this headset?

Thanks,

Similar to this same question where do you set volumes so that say yu do not
want your music to fade out as you use VO? I need this for a radio show.

Basically, when you press the volume buttons, whatever is playing will
be adjusted. The simplest way to deal with this is to play something
and set the volume while it's playing. You can set VO and alerts not
to be adjusted with the volume buttons.

I do have the ringer volume at 100% where I wish them to be and have

Adjusting the tones and other volumes like text and the start/stop
sound when using siri or dictation always change when I change
voiceover volume and yes I have tried to set vo with the volume
buttons and roter with same results.

I must be missing something or not doing something quite right, or I
am just doomed to have a phone with volumes that will be changing all
over the place. Also is there a way to not have the audio duck when
voiceover is speaking if ones does not want this?

 Thanks.
