I Cam?
Does anyone know if the I cam is accessible or if another security app for the IPhone works for the blind? I would like to monitor my apartment or area of the house with my IPhone. Of course, it needs to be audible and graphics are not important unless it is somewhat accessible and possible clips can be saved to show someone later. Are there any ideas out here? Re: Dice World Question
Just for future reference, in order to block a player, you need to have a game started with that person. Make sure you are in that particular game, then double tap where it says Player's 2 stats, which is in the right hand corner, right under the chat button. Flick several times until you hear a button that says Block user. I haven't done this, but I am almost sure, you will get some kind of confirmation pop up where you must approve the block or cancel the block. The one cool thing about this program is that you could use it back up apps and their data without making a full backup, and then you could restore it to your phone later, without having to keep it on your phone to be able to have it be current with the rest of your backup. This app allows you, among other things, to +backup and view SMS Messages on your desktop OS of choice. The following is the latest message users of Disk Aide received from the developers. Mark DiskAid 6.7 with App Management iOS 8 Support DiskAid 6.7: App Backups! Safely rescue space on your iOS device with the new DiskAid 6.7 This week's release of DiskAid 6.7 adds one of the most requested features: the ability to backup individual iOS apps and their custom data and settings to your Mac or PC! Why is this kind of app management so cool? Because it means you can finally delete apps you don't use frequently without that dreaded decision of whether to lose your associated files and saved state. For gamers, this is especially welcoming since it means valuable gigabytes can be reclaimed without sacrificing the hours that have been invested earning achievements and progressing through a game. But really it's great for anyone who has ever thought they might need an app again that they no longer use. With DiskAid 6.7, you can save the app and its associated data as a single .ipa file, and restore it to your device as it was before just as easily. DiskAid 6.7 also adds a powerful new device cloning feature that allows you to make an exact copy of one iOS device to another-no need for clumsy iTunes backups and restores! iOS 8 OS X 10.10 Last Monday at WWDC Apple previewed iOS 8 and we immediately went to work testing its compatibility with DiskAid 6.7. After only 5 days we are pretty happy to release DiskAid 6.7.1 already supporting iOS 8! We have also been testing DiskAid 6.7 on the beta version of OS X 10.10 Yosemite, also due out in October, and so far haven't yet encountered any problems. AltConf 2014 Apple's WWDC DiskAid is super proud to be the Gold Sponsor of AltConf 2014, the free alternative to Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) that took place this week in San Francisco. RE: iTunes Syncing Advice Sought
Kelly, I understand that backing up and syncing are two different operations. I brought up the backing up because backing up did not save my friend's apps when we did that before upgrading her phone to iOS 7 using iTunes. As I understand it, you must sync your device with your iTunes on your computer to get the apps downloaded with the phone to your computer. Or maybe the step I omitted which was mentioned by another poster was to select the menu option of File, Devices, Transfer purchases from the iPhone. I guess that was what I needed to do before trying to upgrade my friend's computer because that should have gotten the apps over. I'm still a bit confused regarding how syncing fits into the process and what is needed and when to ensure that an iTunes backup made to one's computer will restore a new or wiped phone to exactly what it was when the backup was made. I never want to make an assumption again especially where someone else's phone is concerned. I know when I've run syncing programs before that you normally have an option to let one item or the other being synced control what the output results are. This is critical when the synced items are starting from a position where each has stuff on it that the other does not. If a setting does not exist to create a combination of what's on both, something is going to be lost. RE: iTunes Syncing Advice Sought
Kelly said when upgrading one should do a device backup and in that context (the context of upgrading to a new iOS version) the recommendation to force quit all apps and do a Reset Network Settings comes in. Kelly did say one must do this which is not strictly true, but one proponent of this for example is Rob from the Today in iOS Podcast. Whenever he does mention this he usually says that most of the time upgrading goes OK without doing this, but that the likelihood that something might go wrong is much greater if you don't do this. I would agree with this, I have seen way too many upgrades from friends or acquaintances result in problems of various severity and whenever this happens and I asked if they at least force quit all apps and maybe did a restart of the device they said no, they just went ahead and started the update process. In my opinion it is reasonable that fewer problems occur if you do this. iOS may be better than other platforms in this respect, but it's not perfect and apps can use resources or access processes which may interfere with an update and I don't see why I should take this risk if 2 easy steps may avoid it. Re: BARD Mobile Get Books
Hi, I am not sure if I completely understand what you are trying to communicate. :) Usually, for me, under the get books tab, then recently added audio books, I get a pretty close match to the Bard website. However, If I browse the BARD website through the Bard app, I go to recently added titles and then on that page, I click the link for the up to the minute additions. That is where I get a much closer match to the listing of the new books where you only get title and author listings without all the other info on the page. Within the BARD app, I usually prefer to browse the BARD website just because I like having quick access to the book details. I just switch the rotor to headings and flick up and down to move quickly through the book titles. Then if I want more info I just flick right. :) HTH, Christina On Jun 8, 2014, at 10:46 AM, SSEric sseri...@gmail.com wrote: When I choose Get Books from the bottom tabs, the top heading is Recently Added Titles with Audio books, Braille books, etc. under that. Re: Dice World Question
Hi again. I do have another question. I believe as it stands now, there is no way to do this. How can I get my oldest games to come up first? I have many games, so addicted that I'm ashamed to admit how many, and I sometimes only have a few minutes. Would you ask the developer to make it possible to have the games sort by oldest at top of list? By the way, I paid for the game and find it a good policy to do so when a developer does such great things to make it accessible. If I can, I will pay for good software. I know many can't, and I'm not criticizing any one or bragging because I know that eeryone does what they can, especially in these days when cash is very sparse at times! But I would urge that anyone who can do so try to contribute to those who really sttrive to make software accessible. Re: BARD Mobile Get Books
Seems like you are both talking about the same thing. Whether you go to the up to the minute additions on the recently added page from the BARD website, or to the recently added audio books on the Get Books tab of the BARD Mobile app, you are looking at the same listing. Though I prefer to navigate the BARD site for new/recently added books, I do also like looking on the Get Books tab since I can just scroll through the list and see what's been added. Then later I can go and read the full information on the site, or always get it with the more info tab after each new title from within the app. Wayne On 6/9/14, Christina C. blindmaclo...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I am not sure if I completely understand what you are trying to communicate. :) Usually, for me, under the get books tab, then recently added audio books, I get a pretty close match to the Bard website. Moving Apps inside folders using Bluetooth keyboard
Hi all, When using the touch screen, one of the biggest headaches I have using my iDevice is moving apps from one screen to another and moving apps into specific folders. Specifically, if I have multiple Home screens, I can't seem to stop at a desired Home screen since they move by so fast. Once I do find my desired Home screen, it is difficult to use my finger to place an app on a desired folder or on top of a desired app. I am now learning how to use the Amazon Basics keyboard in the hopes that it will take some of these headaches out of my iOS computing. Smile. I still plan on being primarily a touch screen user, but like I stated above, there are some things much easier to do using other methods--the external keyboard to be specific. Smile. I'm writing to ask if anyone has experienced lots of flakiness when using the Amazon Basics Bluetooth keyboard to move apps around or move then in or out of folders. Can someone confirm that it is a keyboard or iOS bug and not a bug with my specific keyboard? At times, when executing the VO+Shift+Letter M command, I don't get any notification that the app has been highlighted and ready to move. I swipe back and forth and the status remains the same. When I am successful and manage to generate the moving app prompt, I focus on the folder where I want to drop the app, and I get a beep but no confirmation as to what has just happened--ultimately the app is never moved. I've tried turning keyboard off then turning back on--no luck. I've tried turning off both iPod and keyboard--no luck. I've tried rebooting iDevice--no luck. For those interested in using an external Bluetooth keyboard to move apps, when lucky and all works as it should, here's what I'm doing to move my apps around: 1. My iDevice (iPod Touch 5th gen) is turned on and my Bluetooth keyboard is paired. Note: for whatever reason, my Amazon Basics keyboard takes about 25 seconds to be recognized by iDevice Bluetooth. (Shrug). 2. I use the touch screen to navigate to Home screen 3 and place focus on the app I want to move. 3. I press the following command on the keyboard: VO+Shift+letter M. I get the message informing me that I'm moving X app. 4. I use 3-finger gesture on the touch screen to move from Home screen 3 to Home screen 1. Note: sometimes this does not work, so I simply go to bottom of the screen and swipe up to move from page 3 to page 1, and this does seem to reliably do the job. 5. I move my app on top of the folder where I want to place the app, and I once again execute the following command: VO+Shift+letter M. 6. My iDevice and VoiceOver begin sounding off all kinds of bells and whistles while they do their thing, and when I no longer hear anything, I swipe to right a couple of times. 7. I press the Home button once on my iDevice to return screen back to normal. 8. I swipe over to the bottom of the list of apps, and sure enough the ape I moved is there. 9. I execute the scrub gesture to close the folder, and I'm eventually informed that the app count has increased, which once again assures me the app has been moved. 10. All done moving app. Smile. For those wanting to move an app from Home screen X to Home screen Y without accidentally creating an unwanted folder, try this... 1. My iDevice (iPod Touch 5th gen) is turned on and my Bluetooth keyboard is paired. 5. Since the keyboard will not allow for placing an app between two apps like the touch interface allows, I simply move my app on top of the app where I want to position the app, and I once again execute the following command: VO+Shift+letter M. 6. I'm told a new folder will be created with X title. 7. I simply press Escape key once on the keyboard to cancel the folder creation process. 8. I swipe to the right a couple of times then press the Home button once to return the focus back to normal. 9. I touch the bottom left-hand corner of the screen then swipe to the left to access the very last app on the current Home screen. 10. If all went well the app will have been moved from Home screen 3 to Home screen 1 without extraneous folders having been created. (thumbs up)! Hopefully someone out there will post a better, more reliable solution. Smile. Joseph the free tech guy! -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Transferring purchases transfers anything bought on the iPhone and puts it onto the computer. Syncing involves any kind of music or ring tones or anything like that that you synced from your computer to your phone. Backing up is backing up all the app data and settings on your phone. Re: [New post] Apple running massive project to map the inside of every large building on earth
Hi, Interesting, but I think this might be a case of media misunderstanding. What I understand is that Apple is now working to give you accurate GPS coordinates even if you are indoors. The distinction is subtle but important. Apple won’t be telling you that you are in the cold and flue isle at your drugstore, but rather you are at position XYZ in GPS coords and on floor zero. The floor is new in iOS 8. It will be up to your drugstore app to suggest you might want some Kleenex along with your cold medicine, and, by the way, Kleenex is on sale if you buy three boxes get one free. Regardless, the potential is incredible. Best,—K Faith doesn’t give you the answers, it merely stops you from asking the questions. (Onyx both markets beacons and provides management software for beacon owners), Jim Edwards reports for Business Insider. The effort isn't a secret — Apple has been seeding commercial spaces with its iBeacon technology for months. But most people don't know that iBeacon exists, or what it is for. And Apple is using a range of technologies in addition to iBeacon to create its indoor maps. Business Insider asked Apple for comment but we didn't hear back. Foeckl says Apple is likely now ahead of Google when it comes to indoor mapping. That is significant because indoor maps will generate revenue in the future for stores and shops in malls and arenas. It could also generate revenue for Apple, Edwards reports. iBeacons are small devices that detect the Bluetooth signal coming from iPhones. They can be used to ping the iPhones of people walking by with offers or useful messages, such as 'hey, you're walking by a Starbucks.' The indoor map strategy is also interesting because Apple's last major mapping launch, the Apple Maps app, was a disaster, Edwards reports. Apple has since fixed Apple Maps, and now it may have a jump on Google in the indoor sector. 'Apple has learned from its mistakes from the initial launch of map services and won't repeat with launch of indoor mapping,' Foeckl says. iBeacon and Bluetooth are opt-in technologies. You have to choose to switch them on, and you can turn them off anytime. Apple's updated iOS 8 mobile operating system will also come with much more detailed privacy controls, in part for this reason. If Apple wins its indoor maps race, it could gain a fortune... Indoor maps could be even more lucrative, because users are just a few inches from the products being sold and the checkout where they pay for them. iBeacons will let marketers know that a shopper is in the candy aisle, looking not just at the chocolate display, but at the milk-chocolate-macadamia-nut section. It's that precise. Much more in the full article here. MacDailyNews Take: Apple's public silence over iBeacon is deafening. Hi, I also recommend the Anker batteries, but I have not seen the lime aid batteries you mentioned. But the reason I use them is that I've been very impressed with the lithium ion quality. Many people only look at the total ma capacity and price. A poor battery will show issues quickly with the lack of a full charge and a low number of recharge cycles. I've had friends purchase cheap batteries and have them barely last ten cycles, while my Ankor keeps on charging and charging. The anker battery pack is the e3 model. If you need I can provide a link. Anker also makes many other types ranging from 3000 mah to 15,000 or even 20,000 mah, but those will be bigger. I don't recommend battery cases because they make the phone too bulky, and unless you are ok with that, it's not a big deal I suppose. However I like my case and I don't want a battery pack which will only charge my phone. So the external battery packs are a great buy. They come with 1 or 2 standard usb ports. What are the real cons of the iPhone WAS:Re: NFB June Braille Monitor/Article on the iPhone
Hi, My complaints on the NFB article are two fold. First I felt the article was written with the title in mind first, much like a bad high school paper trying to debate a topic, and grasping for cons to support the premise by only reporting half truths. For example, T-moble data plans start at $5 per month and the free data plan might even be an option. Second, the cons mentioned are mostly not specific to the iPhone, but smart phones in general, or people in general. Yes, GPS drains the battery. It drains any phone battery. Yes, if you have motor issues,, it may be difficult, blind or sighted. Yes, learning a new piece of technology can be frustrating, blind or sighted. In general, I am less than impressed with the technical savvy of the major blindness organizations. It feels there is an old guard that needs to retire. But, the article did have me asking the question, what are the cons of the iPhone? What are the real issues and problems we still have using the device? I could come up with only one such issue that I have, and that's with automated phone services. The time it takes to hear voiceover while a menu prompt is going on, often requires me to take several attempts before getting to where I want to go. And the time that a system gives up on you if you delay too long is too short for my liking. I dread entering my webex conference code when dialing into meetings. Thank goodness more and more systems will accept voice recognition as well. Alas, I have no easy solution to this problem of getting competing feedback in my ear, one from the automated system and one from voiceover, but I do admit it is easier with a known tactile button layout. Now, I'm not looking for work arounds here, I'm simply pointing out a valid complaint that I feel could be labeled as a con. But that's the best I could do. How about you? Can we come up with ten valid and sane cons? I certainly can come up with ten pros, and then some. RE: looktel money reader
Mine works, slide the phone just a touch to the right of the bill, just a quarter of an inch or less, be sure you are in good lighting. I use mine all the time, had to go through my husband's belongings from the hospital, his wallet and other items and was so glad to have this app, he was carrying around a lot more money than I knew about when he passed. I did not have to involve a family member to see what cash I have and it really was nice to keep that to myself. So much of what you have to deal with at this time, for me, is a lot of paper and it gets done a lot faster with someone to help than it would if I had to scan everything with the phone. Hopefully my cousin's grandson (jus graduated with software engineering degree) returns my computers and I can have the flat bed connected again. Still Money Reader works like a charm for me every time, thought she was broken when she kept saying One-dollar but eventually she switched to other denominations, this much I can say, he had $50 in ones. After only 5 days we are pretty happy to release DiskAid 6.7.1 already supporting iOS 8! We have also been testing DiskAid 6.7 on the beta version of OS X 10.10 Yosemite, also due out in October, and so far haven't yet encountered any problems. RE: NFB June Braille Monitor/Article on the iPhone
I think I can see the iPhone not being for every blind person, those of us on this list, naturally use one or another I-device so we all feel it is relatively easy but an older blind person who may not orient well to touch, may be slow in picking things up ... may not be a good candidate. Some here would say I am not a good candidate at this moment. My husband passed last Friday and since them things I could do either take me a while to figure out or I don't do them. Anyone want to assist me in how to make a contact from a text message? I accidently unsubscribed from this list, took me two days to figure out how to get back, and had it not been for Anna's latest book on the iPhone, I probably would not be here now, however, my phone used to get all the mail from this list and right now I can't even begin to get my head around how to get it back that way. I keep having these blond days lately. It seems to happen when I know we have a lot of batteries and can't find them, then out of the blue I know exactly where they are and by the time I get there I wonder what I am looking for. I do have a couple of messages with info I would like to put into a contact, not mail but text messages and for the life of me I can't copy so can't paste this week, although a month ago I could have. Re: just one question
This question comes up from time to time, so the archives will have a lot of information. Basically, though, the pros of an iPad over an iPhone are: * better battery life * better sound, sometimes, and that is rather subjective * larger screen, for low-vision users using magnification * larger screen, showing more content for apps and webpages, which can sometimes be useful to the blind That's all I can think of. Of course, the pros of the iPhone or iPod Touch outweigh the pros of the larger iPad, at least for me, but each person's situation is different. Would you like to add additional denominations besides the Twenty one currencies that are already supported which include: the US Dollar, Australian Dollar, Bahraini Dinar, Brazilian Real, Belarusian Ruble, British Pound, Canadian Dollar, Euro, Hungarian Forint, Israeli Shekel, Indian Rupee, Japanese Yen, Kuwaiti Dinar, Mexican Peso, New Zealand Dollar, Polish Zloty, Russian Ruble, Saudi Arabian Riyal, Singapore Dollar, and United Arab Emirates Dirham? yes, i'd like to see the Egyptian pound and the Qatari riyal added to the app as those are the currencies i use. however, i asked about the possibility of adding more currencies in general. there are many other dominations in the world and the blind people who use them may want to make use of such nice app. On 10/06/2014 03:07 ص, E V wrote: Would you like to add additional denominations besides the Twenty one currencies that are already supported which include: the US Dollar, Australian Dollar, Bahraini Dinar, Brazilian Real, Belarusian Ruble, British Pound, Canadian Dollar, Euro, Hungarian Forint, Israeli Shekel, Indian Rupee, Japanese Yen, Kuwaiti Dinar, Mexican Peso, New Zealand Dollar, Polish Zloty, Russian Ruble, Saudi Arabian Riyal, Singapore Dollar, and United Arab Emirates Dirham? RE: Mac, and VR Stream
Debbie, I don't have a Mac so am unfamiliar with audio editing programs that run on it but the Hokusai Audio Editor app that will run on an iPhone should do what your friend wants. It has been discussed and recommended by others on this list. RE: Any opinions on battery packs with high MAH?
A couple of weeks ago, I grabbed a 20,000 mah battery pack on sale at eBay for $11.95 with free shipping. It came with two USB charging ports and a one year warranty. I don't recall the name of the seller, but they had nearly a 100% rating and had sold over 200 of these same units all with good ratings. I saw it mentioned on Fatwallet and Dealnews. I know not all lithium mah batteries are equal, but for this amount of juice and for the price, I figured it was well worth it. So far, so good. My point is, you can always find a good deal on these types of items. Just poke around the ratings and customer feedback and you should be able to find something that's reliable. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Pranav Lal Sent: Monday, June 09, 2014 5:31 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Any opinions on battery packs with high MAH? If a Mac app is wanted, Audacity is my choice. Garageband may work, depending on what your friend wants to do. Both are free; Garageband is either already installed or available from the App Store, while audacity is at http://audacity.sourceforge.net As with most editors, 3GP files are not supported. Hello Ed, You know, I use VoiceOver on the Mac, Jaws for Windows, and Zoomtext for Windows virtually every day. Sometimes, I forget which screen reader I use with each application. Re: just one question
Hi Peter, I also think it would be worth noting that unless you get the iPad with 3G support, the iPad doesn't make you pay a certain amount per month, as it only works on Wi-Fi, and not a data connection through a carrier. So, if you take this into account when doing the calculations... an iPad and iPhone are roughly the same price, keep in mind that I'm referring to the Wi-Fi version of the iPad, not the 3G version. The costs are roughly the same, give or take a hundred bucks or so, but when getting the iPhone, your carrier will charge you anywhere from 30 to 50 dollars per month, so your paying 30 to 50 dollars per month in addition to the iPhone's already inflated price. Even if you get it on a contract, most carriers will insist you get the iPhone on a 2 year contract, so you can expect to pay anywhere from 199 to 350 for the phone, plus another 30 to 50 dollars per month for twenty-four months, and you're looking at paying an extra 700 to 1200 dollars on top of what you paid for the phone. In addition to this, some carriers will charge you to unlock your phone at the end of your contract, and this could cost you another 30 to 75 dollars, at which point, you can now do what your iPad has done all along. In any case, if you're budget conscious, then the iPad would be the way to go, at which point, if you want to use the iPad as a navigation device, you'll have to spend a little more for the external GPS receiver, but even then, it still comes out cheaper than the iPhone. Keep in mind that the above are based on what I know about the major carriers in Canada and the US, but I doubt the pricing is much different in other areas. Re: just one question
I guess that is a question you'll have to figure out for yourself. I have both an iPhone 5s and an iPad Air. Both have the same chip inside of them. My iPad Air sits in a case where the top half actually holds my iPad so that it's screen is in landscape mode. The bottom half holds the QWERTY keyboard and it folds closed. If this sounds like a Netbook computer you would be pretty close to the mark. That's exactly what I use it for. I do have an Amazon Basics Bluetooth keyboard that I bought for my iPhone. Sense I got my iPad Air, I rarely use the Amazon keyboard. The biggest difference for me is, the Air does not have touch ID like the iPhone does. Why this is so is beyond me. I've searched in settings again and again in case I missed it. I doubt I have but it's about the only big difference. I also have an iPod 4th generation that holds 16 GB of my favorite tunes. So, in the end it will have to be up to you which way you'll go. Regards, Alan I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me. He said I was being ridiculous - everyone hasn't met me yet. Please click on: HTTP://WWW.home.earthlink.net/~alanandsuzanne/ There, you'll find free files of my arrangements and performances played on the Yamaha Tyros 1 keyboard. The albums in Technics format formerly on my website are still available upon request. First, if you don't need the cellular option but you still want the portability, go for an iPod Touch. It has the power of an iPhone5 (well, slightly better actually) but is also wifi-only, while being the size of an iPhone instead of a larger iPad Mini or full iPad. Second, the iPad with an external receiver will do GPS, but most mapping/navigation apps need to pull map data from some server or other, necessitating a data connection. So, if phone calls, texting (not with iMessage), anywhere internet access for navigation and other apps, and GPS is your thing, do the iPhone. Alex Said: Second, the iPad with an external receiver will do GPS, but most mapping/navigation apps need to pull map data from some server or other, necessitating a data connection. *** No, even standard GPS devices purchased for drivers don't pull map data from servers out and about, they are usually updated manually over the internet via a Wi-Fi connection, or, if you have a data connection, depending on how large the map update file is. Either way, the GPS receiver is just to ping off a satellite or tower to help the GPS locate you, the maps are a separate feature. Just thought I'd point that out. Re: Jonathan's Cable Solution
Hi Jan, yes, I previously own Widex aids and you can get audio shoes for them that offer the Euro connector, assuming they are behind the ear. When a call comes in, you just answer it in the normal way, speak into the iPhone's microphone but the audio is sent to your hearing aids via the cable. Seeing Eye GPS uses server based map data. They say that this is cheaper for the user than having to sell the user the maps to load on your device, the way they do for the note taker based Sendero program. Apps like Navigon and Tom Tom store their map data on the device, so they can be used with a GPS receiver and no need for data connection.
