Hello Sieghard and others,

How do you "force quit" all apps and reset the network settings? Is this done
by powering off the phone and then restarting it?
I've never done those things when backing up before an IOS upgrade, and I've
never had any problems.
But it's good to know about another method to help safeguard apps, etc.

Kelly said "when upgrading one should do a device backup" and in that context
(the context of upgrading to a new iOS version) the recommendation to force
quit all apps and do a Reset Network Settings comes in. Kelly did say one
"must" do this which is not strictly true, but one proponent of this for
example is Rob from the Today in iOS Podcast. Whenever he does mention this he
usually says that most of the time upgrading goes OK without doing this, but
that the likelihood that something might go wrong is much greater if you don't
do this.
I would agree with this, I have seen way too many upgrades from friends or
acquaintances result in problems of various severity and whenever this happens
and I asked if they at least force quit all apps and maybe did a restart of the
device they said no, they just went ahead and started the update process.
In my opinion it is reasonable that fewer problems occur if you do this. iOS
may be better than other platforms in this respect, but it's not perfect and
apps can use resources or access processes which may interfere with an update
and I don't see why I should take this risk if 2 easy steps may avoid it.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Kelly,

If I'm understanding your post, before backing up one's iDevice, you're stating
one must or should: "The end user needs to force quit all apps and reset
network settings so no apps are using the device's antennas."

Why would this be necessary, or how would this step make for a better backup?

Alan,

YOu are combining the tasks of backup and synchronization. there is a
setting in the file menu to initiate a device backup. also, when
upgrading, end users should do a backup to iCloud and then an itunes
backup. The end user needs to force quit all apps and reset network
settings so no apps are using the device's antennas.
