RE: Problem with Skype

2014-07-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ron,

I would suggest you try and delete Skype off your phone and then redownload
it because I can't reproduce this at all neither with the last version or
the one which just came out.

After I place a call I have "End Call" a bit up from the Home key, I just
put my finger on the home button and move it straight up. Once I find End
Call I can flick left for the in-call DialPad, for Mute and for Speakerphone
On/Off.

Hi all,

I have a problem with not being able to do anything after I call someone. I
don't get a menu on the screen that allows me to turn on the speaker or even
hang up. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

By the way, I have the latest version that came out today but I had the same
problem with the previous version.

RE: audible?

2014-07-07 Thread Cristóbal
A while back I saw a promo code for three months of Audible for $5.85 or
something along those lines. For that price, it would certainly be worth it
to give the service and its app a spin. It may have been on CNet, but I'm
sure if you poke around the other deal sites it'll come up if it's still
available.

Subject: RE: audible?

Hi Conni,

As Gerado said, the app is free, but you do have to buy the books. Buying
books Is not possible from the app because if Audible allowed purchases of
books from the app this would be considered an in-app purchase and Apple
would collect 30% of the price which of course Audible which is owned by
Amazon, would not like. Therefore you have to buy your books on the Audible
website either with your computer or you could go to audible.com with Safari
on the iPhone and browse and buy books. Once a book has been purchased it
gets added to your library and anything in your Audible library is available
from the Audible app and can be downloaded directly to the app where you can
then listen it.
Audible books are yours forever, e.g. if you buy a book you can listen to it
and then delete it from your device. But just like music or apps you buy
from iTunes, youc an redownload any book you ever bought even if you cancel
your membership. Now, here is how memberships work:
You can sign up for an Audible account and you can actually use your Amazon
email address and password to sign in. You can buy books without a
membership, but that is quite expensive with books costing often anywhere
from $20 to $50.
Memberships work with a credit system and most books cost 1 credit with a
few exceptions where a book might cost 2 credits. Also, if you have a
membership you get I think 30% off any books you buy for cash.

You can subscribe to a membership In one of 2 ways:
1. Get 1 credit per month for a monthly cost of $14.95 (Gold subscription)
or get 2 credits per month for $22.95 (Platinum subscription).
2. Buy 12 or 24 credits at once for I think $169 or $229, respectively. This
option is a bit less expensive if you can afford to make the one-time
payment and it also gives you the option to buy more credits if you use them
up faster. For example, you could buy 24 credits and if you use them up in 3
months and can afford it you could buy another 24 credits. The monthly plan
gives you 1 or 2 credits a month and that's it except for when Audible gives
you the option to buy an extra 3 credits which is a promotion they often do
for members.

There are also other member promotions, like sometimes you can pick 3 books
from a list of books and you can buy these for 2 credits if you have
accumulated some credits. Credits do, by the way, not go away if you don't
use them, they do accumulate for a certain time although if you didn't use
them for a long time they do go away.
Another promotion they do a few times a year is to let you buy books once
again from a preselected list of maybe 100 or 200 books and then all books
on that list might only be $4.95. They also have a "daily deal" where if you
sign up for it you get an email once a day which allows you to buy whichever
book is picked for anywhere from $1.95 to $5.95.

Buying 24 credits at once is the least expensive per book option as this
breaks down to approx. $9.54 per credit which typically means per book. The
only thing that's cheaper is if you take advantage of one of the $4.95
specials or maybe use the get 3 books for 2 credits, then if you bought your
credits as a 24 pack, you would get 3 books for about $19, so about $6.36
per book.

I usually listen to unabridged books only and I rarely buy any books which
are less than 9 or 10 hours in length. Many unabridged novls are longer than
that, for example, there are some Steven King books which are over 40 hours.
I do consider this a pretty good bang for my buck amd the recording quality
and the quality of the readers typically is outstanding. One of my
favourites is a reader called Humphrey Bower, an Australian actor, who reads
all of the Bryce Courtenay novels, both the books and the reader are
outstanding.

As for the app, it is fully accessible and has become a lot better over
time. You can probably tell that I am quite an Audible fan and one advantage
of Audible is also that quite often they have brandnew books almost at the
same time as they are published in print.

Lastly, if you do sign up for a membership you do get to pick your first
book for free and, as I said before, if you keep your membership only for 1
year

Hi Ahmed,

Answering incoming Skype calls is a bit of a challenge especially if you use
a passcode. As far as I know you can't answer from the lock screen. If I
have quick access to my phone I can usually do it uickly enough, but I have
a 5S and use Touch Id which allows me to unlock the phone pretty quickly.
It's definitely a good idea to set Skype alerts to show on the lock screen
because then I can double tap on it in the lock screen, then use my
fingerprint to unlock and I'll be taken straight into the app where I can
find the answer button.

Hello Jenny,

OK, I saw the Skype update this morning and know now where you saw this
about "removing contacts". This has indeed changed a bit in this version of
Skype.

The easiest way to do this is to double tap on a contact, then once the
contact is open double tap o the contact name again at the top of the screen
which will show you the contacts profile. You can also get there by opening
a contact, then double tap the "More" button at the bottom right and select
"Profile" from the menu.

At the bottom of the profile is another "More" button and in this menu you
now have "Block" and "Remove". There is no longer a "Block and Remove"
option as I assume that removing a contact will either block it
automatically or maybe it asks if you want to also block the contact if you
tap on Remove. Since I didn't have a contact to be removed I didn't try
this.

In the What's New they also mentioned that you can send voice messages, I
have not yet found where you can do this. I thought it would be in the media
menu where you can send a photo or video message, but those are still the
only 2 options in that menu.

Regards,

Sieghard

Regarding a free trial or lite version, here's a concerning tweet KNFB just
sent out:
Folks interested in iOS app trials should bring the complaints directly to
Apple. The iTunes app store has no mechanism for supporting this.

Of course, that isn't technically true. They could offer a free app with an
in-app purchase to unlock the full feature set, or they could offer a free app
that is restricted as well as the full-priced (and full-featured) app. There is
no trial mechanism, true, but there are ways around it that other apps use.
MBraille uses in-app purchases, for example, while Voice Dream takes the
two-app approach. Had I not been able to test them, especially Mbraille, I
probably would not have bought them.

I agree that one of the big unknowns at this point is how easy it will be to
use KNFB Reader free hand and get really good results. Many of us have spend
$50 or $60 for Prizmo, Text Grabber and the Standscan Pro so that is not so far
from $99 and as you said, the Standscan maybe portable, but I never have folded
it up and carried it around. As far as restaurants I can’t see myself sitting
there with headphones on because of the noise and try to decipher a possibly
multi-page menu for 10 minutes. What’s wrong with a big of human contact and
asking whoever you have gone out with or, if you are alone, the waiter or
waitress to tell you what’s on the menu? They can quickly outline the
categories and any daily specials which normally are not in the menu anyways
but on a different menu or card on the table and then if I feel like Pasta or
Steak I can just ask for what’s in these categories and I won’t have to try and
go through everything my OCR app may or may not have recognized.

Otherwise, its not worth the big difference in price between it and Text

Thanks for that information, that price means that I would only buy it if it

several areas. For me those would be primarily in ease of use and the ability
to take good pictures and of course regonition quality.

I hope they offer some sort of way to try out the app, maybe a free version
which allows you to take 10 pictures or something like that.

While the price is on the high side, it is, however, not as bad as some

Re: KNFB Reader App

2014-07-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't really think this is analogous to the business model of the 80's
either. After all this is just one company with one product. It'll be
competing with a lot of different options, and it may or may not make it
in the market place.

In the 80's, the cost of products like these were 100 times what we're
being asked to pay today. Remember too that KNFB Reader is not running a
custom OS on custom hardware. You're still just buying an app for an off
the shelf platform which already has accessibility built into it. Again,
a far cry from where we were in the 80's.

I suspect the KNFB Reader folks are looking at the price of different
options, as well as the size of their market and setting the price based
on how much money they think they need to offset the development and
other costs with developing and distributing their product. In a way,
this is how each app in the App Store determines their price, whether
they're developed with the blind in mind or just for the general population.

On 07/07/2014 10:24 AM, Ron Pelletier wrote:

David,

I don't feel that they are bringing us back to the 80's unless that is
what the individual wants. They simply are giving us another choice
which is welcomed by many people. It doesn't really matter if it is off
the shelf or specialty software for the blind, there is a market for it.
You may not feel that it is necessary for you to go with expensive
dedicated software but some people need it and want it and are prepared
to pay the price to have the choice. If there are enough of these
people, well, they will make it with their app. If not, it will have to
be their decision. Meanwhile, its our choice to make.

Rather than commenting on something I know nothing about because I
wasn't there to see the demo, I will wait and see what the software has
to offer and if it suits me, I'll do what I have to do to buy it. I
clearly remember when some $20.00 software came out when there were
apps that did some of the job sold for 2 or 3 dollars, the reaction was
the same as what we are getting now. When Seeing Eye came out with
their app, it was general rejection of such an expensive product but, in
the end, the ones who liked it and could afford it purchased it and they
are very happy with it.

Why do we think that every single product that is made for the blind has
to be affordable by all blind people. There are people like me on a
fixed income and there are people like Stevy Wonder and many budgets
between. Too many of us have a sense of entitlement associated with
their blindness.

Just a personal opinion

One of the things I really like about Apple, iOS in particular, is that
it has successfully allowed us to escape from the old business model of
paying a lot of money for assistive products. No longer do we have to
pay a high price to access our screens because Apple included a free
access package. No longer do we have to pay a high price for OCR apps
because sighted people, who use and require the same apps, only need to
pay a few dollars for it and, therefore, so do we. In my opinion, and
this is just my opinion, the marketing department of KNFB is doing us a
tremendous disservice by trying to bring back the 1980's and 1990's
business model of how assistive technology is distributed.

Re: Nfl mobile

2014-07-07 Thread Richard Turner
Yes, if you want to listen through the NFL Mobile app, you have to buy a
subscription.
Some folks have had success buying the $0.99 pro football radio app that tries
to find a station on a given teams network that is broadcasting the game, which
means you have to try different feeds until you find one that works.
I have not done either, but I'm considering the NFL Audio Pass subscription for
this coming season.
It looks like it is $29.99 for all teams through the superbowl.
You can spend less if you want to limit the subscription.

Selecting Text That Isn't Part of an Editble Area, Such as a Webpage?

2014-07-07 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I'm using an iPod 5G. I have a Braille display and a Bluetooth keyboard. I can
easily select text in an edit field, and in that case, the edit function is
available in the rotor. In an area that doesn't have an edit field, the edit
functions aren't available in the rotor, and the only function available in
this case is the shortcut menu when doing a double-tap and hold gesture. This
menu contains a "select all" option.

I've tried the two-finger spread gesture on the touchscreen in non-editable
text, and I'm able to select a character at a time. Is there a trick to this
process? It seems very unwieldy to me. How about keyboard and Braille display
commands? I've tried using dots 2-5-6-chord on the Braille display to select
text, but it doesn't seem to work.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Teresa

Lastly, if you do sign up for a membership you do get to pick your first
book for free and, as I said before, if you keep your membership only for 1
year and then don't renew, all the books you bought are available to you to
listen to forever. You could use the Audible Manager on the computer as well
to physically download the books to your computer, but while I started doing
this at first, I don't any more since I can redownload them from my Audible
library at any time and I pretty much exclusively use my iPhone to listen to
them. You can even return a book if you buy one you end up not liking, just
call customer service and even if you did listen to most or a

like comparing chalk with cheese.

Re: Streaming Music Services!

2014-07-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
I've been using one called AccuRadio that I found when browsing
through results on AppleVis. It is very accessible, though the initial
account creation process could be a little easier. For instance,
VoiceOver said edit box but then when I touched near the bottom of the
screen VoiceOver said "picker item." I was able to sign up for an
account with little trouble after that. They have a wide variety of
genres or you can choose what others are listening to. You cannot
search by artist like on Pandora. AccuRadio does let you ban specific
songs or artists though rather than Pandora where you can only
like/dislike things. AccuRadio is free and gives you unlimited skips
for each station. I am not sure if it is restricted to the United
States or not. Some genres have lots of subcategories and others do
not. For the most part thoughI have really liked and enjoyed what I
have played there.

A subscription is only being proposed such that the concept of a “trial

Hi Ron,

It depends on your use. I'd use the app seldom enough that a pay as you go
model might work better for me. Whatever happens, though, the point remains
that it is absolutely possible to offer app trials already, and saying it isn't
is, I feel, an inaccurate and ridiculous statement for the app makers to put
out there.

And let's not forget the seeing eye's one month subscription. Something

Folks interested in iOS app trials should bring the complaints directly to
Apple. The iTunes app store has no mechanism for supporting this.

Of course, that isn't technically true. They could offer a free app with an
in-app purchase to unlock the full feature set, or they could offer a free
app that is restricted as well as the full-priced (and full-featured) app.
There is no trial mechanism, true, but there are ways around it that other
apps use. MBraille uses in-app purchases, for example, while Voice Dream
takes the two-app approach. Had I not been able to test them, especially
Mbraille, I probably would not have bought them.

RE: Skype update and removing contacts

2014-07-07 Thread Ahmed Khater
Hello Sieghard,

I always receive skype calls while I am in the home screen, or the screen of
my phone is locked. When I try to answer the call, it is very difficult for
me to find to go to the skype app and answer the call quickly. Now, What is
the easiest and fastest way to answer a skype call? And are there any
specific notification settings, or any other possible settings that I need
to perform which can facilitate the process of answering skype calls?

Thank you.

Regards,

Sieghard

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: KNFB Reader App

2014-07-07 Thread Rick Alfaro
I agree with all of these points. I'd have no problem plunking down the $99
if the app is really as impressive as the demos show, but the deal breaker
for me would be the lack of no demo. There's no way I'd pay that kind of
money without the ability to try it first somehow.

Hello Sieghard,

I appreciate your common sense approach to all this talk. The world has
really changed when someone on this list says that $99 is an astronomical
price. I'm not saying it isn't higher than other apps but no one will hold a
gun to anyone's head to buy it. I was at both presentations and they were
impressive. I should also say that I went out and bought Prizmo just to have
something to compare it to when the time comes. So far Prizmo seems quite a
bit more clumsy and slow. Is it $90 slower? I haven't decided yet, perhaps
it's my inexperience. I am also curious to know how many of the people
complaining so loudly about the $99 have traded in their iPhone 4, 4s, 5, to
get to a 5s and happily paid the price each year or so for upgrades that are
at best incremental. I'm not picking on anyone about this as I am a gadget
geek myself although I still have a 4s as I haven't been dazzled by the 5 or
5s. We will see what the 6 does.

In any event, let's let them get the app out, and I too hope for a demo
version, and then see how it goes. If it proves to be a good product with
value equal to its price than fine. If not then it won't. I can tell you I
never thought in my life time we would be debating over a reading machine as
fast and accurate and small as this one is calling its $99 price tag
astronomical. Seems like a very small universe to me.

Yes, Apple did all of that, but at the same time they use a lot of
proprietary hardware and software which makes a lot of their devices and
accessories a lot more expensive than the competition and yet people have no
problems forking out $30 or $35 for a stupid little Lightning to 30 PIN
adapter which is roughly the size of a double A battery or a 3 foot piece of
cable with a USB plug on one end and a 30-Pin or Lightning plug on the
other. A comparible Micro USB cable would cost about $5 or $8.

I don't really blame Apple for this, they charge what people are willing to
pay, but I am sure KNFB put a lot of time and expertise in developing the
iOS version of KNFB Reader and from what I have heard so far it may do some
things which Prizmo or Text Grabber won't do so I think once again we should
all just wait until the app is released before passing the guilty verdict.
$99 is expensive for most apps, but I have seen other apps on the App Store
which cost that and much more and which are made for a particular target
market.

One of the things I really like about Apple, iOS in particular, is that it
has successfully allowed us to escape from the old business model of paying
a lot of money for assistive products. No longer do we have to pay a high
price to access our screens because Apple included a free access package.
No longer do we have to pay a high price for OCR apps because sighted
people, who use and require the same apps, only need to pay a few dollars
for it and, therefore, so do we. In my opinion, and this is just my
opinion, the marketing department of KNFB is doing us a tremendous
disservice by trying to bring back the 1980's and 1990's business model of
how assistive technology is distributed.

Hi Sieghard

I completely agree with this. I will wait and see what the reviews of the
app are like first. It may not be the cheapest app but much cheaper than the
original knfb reader which I did buy years back. I think in terms of costs
of technology, they have massively decreased compared to 10 years ago.

I don't think I would use it in a restaurant as I like to go through a menu
with someone and find this more sociable. But I can see it being helpful
when people drop loads of paperwork on me just before a meeting. So far with
the IPhone I have not had the best results with OCR when compared to the
original KNFB reader on an N82.

This time they are way late to the party. The original KNFB reader was
groundbreaking, but blind folks have been doing OCR with their iPhones for a
long time now, and aids like the Standscan can help to render fair OCR with
just about any app that you use.

In my opinion, the price of this app, if it is indeed $99.00, is insanely
high and it won't be on my phone for that price. However, ultimately the
market, as it always does, will decide. I know some will purchase it at
this price. If enough people don't, then the folks at KNFB will have to
make some decisions about the price. If enough people buy it at $99.00,
then the app will likely remain at that price for some time.

people will pay that much for something that is only faster by a few seconds
than apps like TextGrabber or Prizmo.

Just my opinion.

RE: KNFB Reader App

2014-07-07 Thread Ron Pelletier
David,

I don't feel that they are bringing us back to the 80's unless that is what
the individual wants. They simply are giving us another choice which is
welcomed by many people. It doesn't really matter if it is off the shelf or
specialty software for the blind, there is a market for it. You may not feel
that it is necessary for you to go with expensive dedicated software but
some people need it and want it and are prepared to pay the price to have
the choice. If there are enough of these people, well, they will make it
with their app. If not, it will have to be their decision. Meanwhile, its
our choice to make.

Rather than commenting on something I know nothing about because I wasn't
there to see the demo, I will wait and see what the software has to offer
and if it suits me, I'll do what I have to do to buy it. I clearly remember
when some $20.00 software came out when there were apps that did some of the
job sold for 2 or 3 dollars, the reaction was the same as what we are
getting now. When Seeing Eye came out with their app, it was general
rejection of such an expensive product but, in the end, the ones who liked
it and could afford it purchased it and they are very happy with it.

Why do we think that every single product that is made for the blind has to
be affordable by all blind people. There are people like me on a fixed
income and there are people like Stevy Wonder and many budgets between. Too
many of us have a sense of entitlement associated with their blindness.

Just a personal opinion

RE: KNFB Reader App

2014-07-07 Thread Ron Pelletier
Sieghard,

Like you I would get it if there are features that make it much easier to
line-up. I can't see myself bring my StandScan Pro to a restaurant or
anywhere else in public. If that happens, I will be happy to spend the
$100.00. Otherwise, its not worth the big difference in price between it and
Text Grabber or Prizmo. I'm also with you on having a possibility to try it
out before purchasing. This is not like a 99 cent app that you can just
delete if it doesn't work.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that information, that price means that I would only buy it if it
was absolutely outstanding and much better than Text Grabber or Prizmo in
several areas. For me those would be primarily in ease of use and the
ability to take good pictures and of course regonition quality.

I hope they offer some sort of way to try out the app, maybe a free version
which allows you to take 10 pictures or something like that.

While the price is on the high side, it is, however, not as bad as some
people have speculated a few weeks ago when people thought it would cost
$300 or $500 and it's certainly a far cry from the $1,500 it cost when it
was aavailable for the Symbean platform.

liked best and edited down to ringtone length and converted to m4r. Feel free
to download it from here:

Once downloaded, hitting enter on it will open it in iTunes and then you can
synch your phone (making sure you have the synching of tones checked). If you’d
prefer the whole song so that you can pick a different section to make your own
ringtone then it’s here:

Re: transfare my photos from my icloud to PC

2014-07-07 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

Why do you want to do this? I had to help out a friend recently who
had her phone stolen (she'd actually just mislaid it) & she was hoping
that if we accessed her iCloud we could at least grab all of her
photos & transfer them onto her computer / a new phone. Unfortunately,
it turns out that it isn't as straight forward as it may seem.

Your photos aren't actually backed up in iCloud in the same way that
other things are, although this will be changing in iOS8. However,
there are two situations where your photos may be stored in iCloud:

If you have setup a photo stream to share with people.
If you have multiple iCloud enabled devices, if you have set things up
so that photos are transfered between them & you have enough free
space on iCloud for this to happen.

Unfortunately in my situation, no photo stream had been enabled and
whilst my friend did also own an iPad that was set to receive photos
via photo transfer, she had run out of free space on her account so
none of her photos were available online.

If you can let us know why you're wanting to do this perhaps I /
someone else can come up with another approach.

Cheers,
Ben.

RE: transfare my photos from my icloud to PC

2014-07-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Steve,

If you download the iCloud Control Panel and enable Photos anything your iPhone
uploads via Photostream is automatically downloaded to your PC to the default
folder or whichever folder you specify in iCloud Control Panel. The default is
c:\users\Your User Name\Pictures\Photostream

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Can't find my Chimes app on my iPhone

2014-07-07 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi,
I think this should work… Open the app by which ever means, i.e., Siri etc,
once you are in the app, press the home button once. This will take you to the
homepage that the app is on. If the app is hiding in a folder, you will find
yourself in that folder and a two finger flick up, to read the whole screen,
will tell you where you are.

Hope this helps,
Sandy

RE: Fabulous ringtone for download

2014-07-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Robin,

I wouldn’t mind downloading the full length MP3, could you zip/compress it
because the way it is as an MP3 file it just starts playing without giving me
the option to download it.

Thanks,

Sieghard

Dear listers

I saw that Metrognome has done some more excellent ringtones that are free to
download – however they are all full song length and MP3s so I took the one I
liked best and edited down to ringtone length and converted to m4r. Feel free
to download it from here:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1568469/Metrgnome.m4r

Once downloaded, hitting enter on it will open it in iTunes and then you can
synch your phone (making sure you have the synching of tones checked). If you’d
prefer the whole song so that you can pick a different section to make your own
ringtone then it’s here:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1568469/iPhone%20%28MetroGnome%20Remix%29.mp3

Thanks – Robin.

Thanks – Robin.
