Ringtone apps

2014-07-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jenny,

The app you mentioned, Ringtones Unlimited, is it by a developer called
"iHandy Inc."?

If so it appears that it's just another app like Ringtone Maker, Ringtone
Wizard or Ringtone Architect. All of these apps basically allow you to pick
a song from your music library, select a portion of that song and convert it
to a ringtone. You then have to either email this ringtone to yourself or
get it out of the app using iTunes file sharing, then save it to your
ringtones folder, import it to your tones library in iTunes and sync it back
to your phone.

There simply is no way to get ringtones to a non-jailbroken iPhone without
using iTunes.

The only exception is if you buy the ringtone from iTunes, then it's
downloaded to your phone and made available.

I also heard that if you use Apple's Garage Band app you can make a ringtone
and somehow make it available on your phone and all of it from the app
without having to sync through iTunes. I have not tried this so it's just
hear say.

Sieghard

RE: is 4S enough?

2014-07-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Gerardo,

If you can't upgrade until next April I doubt you can even still get a 4S at
that time. In any case, the 4S is a nice phone, but it was released in
201This would mean that if you buy a 4S after the 6 is released, you will be
3 generations behind and as others already pointed out, you will be able to
install iOS 8 on the 4S, but almost certainly iOS 9 next year will not be
supported and even iOS 8 will have features which are not supported on the
4S.

My recommendation is that you try and save up for a 5S if you can't afford a
6 and by next April you should definitely be able to get a 5S for extremely
cheap and most likely for free on contract. OK, I should say at this point
that this is the case in the US and Canada. I don't know which country you
are from, but if I remember correctly it's one of the Caribbean islands,
isn't it? Therefore I have no idea what your carriers offer and how they
deal with contracts.
The 5S is the first 64 Bit processor phone and there is one iOS 8 feature
which is actually a Voiceover feature which is only available on a phone
with 64 Bit processor. That feature is the Alex voice for Voiceover.
Then of course the 5S has the fingerprint sensor and for me that was one of
the main reasons why I upgraded. Having to enter a 4-digit passcode is
something I was always too lazy to do, but I really like knowing that nobody
can get into my phone now should it be stolen. Besides that I think it's
faster to unlock your phone with the fingerprint then it is to unlock it
when there is no passcode at all and you have to tap the unlock button or
tap on the screen and do a 3-finger swipe.

Sieghard

RE: deleting read messages from facebook messenger

2014-07-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

Yes, you can delete individual messages in a conversation, but it's not the
most intuitive thing to do with Voiceover.
Here is what I do:

1. Find the message you want to delete.
2. Double tap and hold on the right side of the screen, then after the
triple tone swipe across to the left side of the screen without lifting your
finger between the double tap and hold and the swipe.
3. You should hear Voiceover say "Forward, menu item".
4. Swipe left once and you are on delete, Voiceover will say "Delete, menu
item".
5. Double tap on delete, you will be prompted "Delete message, it cannot be
undone", then you have to confirm by double tapping another delete button.
If you swipe left once more when you get to delete, you find a third option
which is "Copy".
This could definitely use a bit of improvement, Facebook should really just
implement the action rotor for deleting, forwarding, copying etc.

Sieghard

Re: tMobile or an excessable cell phone carrier?

2014-07-15 Thread Misty Dawn Bradley

Hi,
I also use T-Mobile, but I use a carrier called Family Mobile, which uses
the T-Mobile network. You can find it at Walmart at the wireless center. I
pay $40 per month for unlimited talk, text, and data with my IPhone 4S. I
got my phone unlocked, but you can use any T-Mobile or Family Mobile phone.
There is also another service that uses T-Mobile called Straight Talk, and I
think they have an unlimited talk, text, and data plan for $45 per month. I
used Family Mobile both in North Carolina and Texas and almost always have
good service just about everywhere I have gone.

RE: Messaging question.

2014-07-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Anita,

As Carrie pointed out, you can use the Voice Memos app to record a message.
After you saved it you can double tap on the recording, then select
"Message" from the share menu.

Apple also announced that in iOS 8 you can send audio messages directly from
the messages app although I am pretty sure that this will only work if the
recipient has an iDevice with iMessage enabled.

In the keynote in June they demonstrated this and it appears to be similar
to sending an audio message in Facebook Messenger or Whats App Messenger
where you tap and hold a record button and hold it as long as you speak your
message. Then you let go and you can send your message.

Of course we have to wait another 2 months or so until iOS 8 is released to
the public.

Sieghard

You have that all correct, yes. I can't say why commands aren't working
properly for you, but your understanding of the layout and the VO keys is right
on. Can you describe more exactly what happens when you try commands? Are you
certain you have the right commands? For instance, read all is vo-a, while
paste is command-v, as it is not a VoiceOver-specific command.

If you only get a 4S, you will be limited since you would need to keep it

able to afford the 5, or is my best bet to sacrifice and spend the money on
a 5S? thanks for info.

Re: is 4S enough?

2014-07-15 Thread Alex Hall
The 4S will support iOS8, coming this fall, but very probably not iOS9. So,
you'll get just one upgrade out of it, none by the time you actually get ahold
of one next year. Apple may surprise us, but they dropped the iPhone4 this year
for iOS8, so it would be logical to assume they will drop the 4S soon.

In the United States, the standard pricing is this: the newest iPhone starts at
$200 on contract, the previous year's model at $100, and the model from two
years ago is free. Next year, then, the iPhone6 will be $200, the 5S $100, and
the 5C free, in all likelihood. However, especially as the next iPhone launch
draws near, sales start. For example, there was a weekend back in May when a
national chain of electronics stores essentially let you trade in a 4 or 4S and
get a 5S for free, and deals like that come along with some frequency at
certain times of the year. If possible, and since you can't upgrade until April
anyway, wait and see what the new pricing will be, then wait for a good sale.

If it were me, I'd shoot for a 5S or 6 if I could, as those will last you the
longest and will run the best. My 5 is fine, and if it weren't for a battery
problem I'd be happy to keep it for another year or so, but if you are
upgrading anyway, get the newest you can afford. Disk space is a concern, but
it depends on what you do with it. I have a couple Bard books, but mostly use
text from Kindle or Bookshare, and I don't really listen to music, so I can
easily get away with a 16GB iPhone and never have storage problems. Your use
case will be different, though, so you'll have to figure out which size is
worth the extra cost. All the prices I gave were for 16GB iPhones, except for
the iPhone4 which, I believe, starts at 8GB.

RE: My phone vibrates instead of ringing; what can I do to change it?

2014-07-15 Thread Ron Pelletier
Grace,

If you don't find the mute switch, it may be that your phone is in a case.
If it is, there should be a little rubber flap door over it. Otter box
cases cover the mute switch.

I'll try.

First, find your two volume buttons, on the left side of the phone when you
are holding it normally (home button up, power port facing you). Now, just
above those two round buttons is a long, thin ridge. This ridge is the mute
switch, and it can be pushed either toward the screen, or away from the
screen, toward the rear panel of the phone. Take a fingernail or finger pad
and gently push it one way or the other. It is probably muted right now,
meaning that it should move toward the screen. To be clear, the ridge runs
parallel with the side of the phone, and the direction in which it can be
moved is perpendicular to that. Put another way, if you were to hold the
phone so the volume buttons and mute switch are facing you, the switch can
be moved left or right.

Sorry, I meant the front as the screen, the back as the rear panel where the
camera, logo, and so on are. If you place the phone flat on a table, with
the screen facing up and the home button toward you, the switch can move
toward or away from the tabletop. Hopefully that makes more sense.

The mute switch will not affect VoiceOver's speech or sounds. Try flipping
the switch; it moves from the back of the phone to the front, or vice versa,
not up and down. When it is nearer the back of the phone, that is muted, and
near the front is un-muted. An easy way to tell is to plug it in; if it
makes a noise, it is not muted, but if it is muted it will vibrate twice.

did you flip the mute switch? If not, try going to Settings > Sound, and
making sure your sound volume is up, and that the ringer is set to vibrate

Re: is 4S enough?

2014-07-15 Thread Alan Paganelli
Here's my view on this issue. Don't buy a phone until you have saved up the
money first even if it takes you longer. Why? Because your only going to get
one shot at it and that new phone or iPad isn't going to be cheap so save up
until you can aford the biggest hard drive because it's better to have it and
not need it then to need it and not have it. Far to many people buy the
cheapest and not even the newest because their money is burning a hole in their
pocket. For example, I had an iPhone 4. The 4s came after I bought mine, and
then came the iPhone 5. When I got a new iPhone it was the iPhone 5s. I had
the money to buy the largest size hard drive and to get it with both celular
data and WI-FI. To my way of thinking, it's a smarter way to get what you
really want which is the way coolest iPhone they hhave at the time you have
enough saved up. In my case it was the 5s. There is always a new model coming
out in the not to distant future but setteling for less because your money is
burning a hole in your pocket isn't the best way to go.

Re: tMobile or an excessable cell phone carrier?

2014-07-15 Thread Kelly Pierce
to make any switch, your Verizon phones will need to be unlocked.
This needs to happen after you have paid off your phone but before you
cancel your service. You will likely not get more than 3G speeds on
T-Mobile with your Verizon phones. For the full Verizon experience at
a fraction of the cost, consider going to page Plus. It resells
service from Verizon at deeply discounted rates.

Re: My phone vibrates instead of ringing; what can I do to change it?

I don't think so. Muting with the switch is a hardware thing, something no
software can change. If that is indeed what happened, the only way is to flip
the switch manually.

I know this might be basic, but in the interest of covering all the bases,
did you flip the mute switch? If not, try going to Settings > Sound, and
making sure your sound volume is up, and that the ringer is set to vibrate

First, find your two volume buttons, on the left side of the phone when you
are holding it normally (home button up, power port facing you). Now, just
above those two round buttons is a long, thin ridge. This ridge is the mute
switch, and it can be pushed either toward the screen, or away from the screen,
toward the rear panel of the phone. Take a fingernail or finger pad and gently
push it one way or the other. It is probably muted right now, meaning that it
should move toward the screen. To be clear, the ridge runs parallel with the
side of the phone, and the direction in which it can be moved is perpendicular
to that. Put another way, if you were to hold the phone so the volume buttons
and mute switch are facing you, the switch can be moved left or right.

The mute switch will not affect VoiceOver's speech or sounds. Try
flipping the switch; it moves from the back of the phone to the front, or vice
versa, not up and down. When it is nearer the back of the phone, that is muted,
and near the front is un-muted. An easy way to tell is to plug it in; if it

First, find your two volume buttons, on the left side of the phone when you are
holding it normally (home button up, power port facing you). Now, just above
those two round buttons is a long, thin ridge. This ridge is the mute switch,
and it can be pushed either toward the screen, or away from the screen, toward
the rear panel of the phone. Take a fingernail or finger pad and gently push it
one way or the other. It is probably muted right now, meaning that it should
move toward the screen. To be clear, the ridge runs parallel with the side of

The mute switch will not affect VoiceOver's speech or sounds. Try
flipping the switch; it moves from the back of the phone to the front, or vice
versa, not up and down. When it is nearer the back of the phone, that is muted,
and near the front is un-muted. An easy way to tell is to plug it in; if it
makes a noise, it is not muted, but if it is muted it will vibrate twice.

I know this might be basic, but in the interest of covering all the

making sure your sound volume is up, and that the ringer is set to vibrate and

I know this might be basic, but in the interest of covering all the bases,
did you flip the mute switch? If not, try going to Settings > Sound, and making
sure your sound volume is up, and that the ringer is set to vibrate and
ringtone.

Hello,
You bet you can.
You can take a screenshot of anything that's on the screen. Just put the page
or item on your screen then press Home and Power buttons at the same time. You
will hear a shutter like sound. You now have a picture of what ever it is.

Re: Update on Transferring iTunes Library from one PC to Another

2014-07-15 Thread SSEric
This is just from memory, and I have not done it myself this way, but I thought
you were able to just copy the iTunes media folder's plus the iTunes.ITL file
into your new iTunes installation. I did do it by just copying the iTunes media
and not that ITL file, but all that got me was having to set up all of my lists
and other preferences all over again.

Brighthouse tv app and DVR?

2014-07-15 Thread Jared
Hello, I am a time warner cable customer who uses the Brighthouse TV app to
watch TV around the house on my phone. I noticed there is a DVR tab on the
app but I do not have a DVR through them. Has anyone used the app with a
DVR? If so can you schedule recordings, and play the recordings back on
either your phone or us the phone as a remote to control the DVR?

RE: Cover recommendations for latest iPad mini

2014-07-15 Thread Jennie Facer
I have a couple of cases I use interchangeably. I use a smart cover by Apple
that just covers the front, but when you pull it back, it unlocks the unit
then when you put it back, it locks it.

I also have the OtterBox case which is bulky and heavy but it works.

The last I have is the LifeProof case. It is a good waterproof case, but it
does muffle VoiceOver a little bit.

Re: Incase Origami iPad Case and Anker UlthaSlim Keyboard?

2014-07-15 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

At the moment, I wouldn't recommend the Anker keyboard.
I purchased the T300 from Amazon, which sounds like the keyboard or at
least one of the keyboards you might be considering.
It has difficulty with the keyboard shortcut VO-Command-Up arrow, using
the left hand command key. If I use that combo with the right hand
command key, it works.
I've written to anker about this and they are investigating it. Until I
can figure out a solution, I'd stay away from anker. At the very least,
make sure vo-command-up arrow works.

Sieghard,
That's exactly why I'm excited to have the K810--it works with both my
Windows 8.1 tablet as well as my iPhone! I haven't used the Option/Alt
key to do any IOS functions as of yet. I just use my keybard for long
typing marathons. LOL! Thank you so very much! You are one of the ones

Take care to all!

you have to use a different key combination for the Voiceover key since it
does not have the Command key and I think the Option key on a PC keyboard

the Alt key.
I accidently also bought the K810 before and while it works I think I
remember that it didn't have a button at the very top right to show the
virtual keyboard. You could of course just turn off the keyboard to
achieve

this, but I like to have the button.

Sieghard,
Thanks so much for telling us about the Logitech K811 Bluetooth keyboard.
Not too long ago, I purchased the Logitech K810 and just found out, from
looking on amazon and reading your message, that this keyboard is also
able

to switch between devices as well!!! What an awesome benefit!! Thanks so
much again.

Hi Teresa,

The Apple Wireless keyboard is quite nice, but I think the Logitech
K811 is nicer. It's just as small, feels just as well-made but it has
2 big
advantages:

1. It has a physical on/off slider on the right side instead of that
silly button on the Apple Wireless keyboard which inevitably gets
pushed if you have the keyboard in a bag or backpack.
2. It is capable of being paired with up to 3 devices so if you have,
for example, an iPhone, an iPad and an Apple TV you can pair all 3
devices with the keyboard and simply pressing F1, F2 and F3 will allow
you to select which device you want to control. Whichever device you
pair first will be F1, the second device you pair can be selected with
F2 and F3 obviously then is for the last device you pair.

Another nice feature is that it's rechargeable via a standard USB
Micro cable so no batteries to replace.

To be honest, the keyboard I got was less expensive, but I will
probabl get an Apple one when I get an iPad. I couldn't pass up the
good reviews and
$30
US discount on this one from Amazon. :) I also wanted to experiment to
see if a bluetooth keyboard was a good option for me. It apparently is.

LOL, I know it seemed like an obvious question, but I was looking

Hi,

I don’t want to make them so is there an app that will do this. Basically I

Re: Tagging people on Facebook

2014-07-15 Thread Victor Gouveia

Tagging a person is just a name given to a series of functions.

When you post a picture, post a status update, or check in, you're given the
option of including friends in your update or posting. Using the Facebook
app, one simply double taps the Friends link, and you're taken to a list of
all your friends. The names for each friend comes up twice and you double
tap the first instance of the person's name in order to select them to tag
in the post. Move down the list, double tapping on the first instance of
the person's name you wish to tag in the post, and, once you're done, double
tap the done button at the top of the screen..

This feature is similar to selecting a place/location, or choosing a feeling
or mood to tag or include in your post.

Hope this helps.

As far as I know, you are not able to do this on the mobile site, but you
can do it using the iOS app.

To tag someone using the iOS app, just put an @ sign before their name.

Hope this helps.

Does the at symbol method really work with the mobile app? I haven't tried a
full post, because I don't have enough feedback in the edit field. Do you type
the at symbol, followed by the name, and then enter? This is how you do it on
the full site.

Re: Tagging people on Facebook

2014-07-15 Thread Teresa Cochran
Yes, there is. Below the text field in which you enter your status, there is a
button that says "choose friends". Double-tap that, and you'll have a list of
friends. Double-tap the friend you want to add. Repeat as needed until you're
done, and you can hit the done button.

Also, on the full site, you can type the at symbol (@) immediately followed by
enough of the name that you can press enter and that person will be tagged. I
haven't experimented with this on the mobile site.

Re: Braille Command For Shortcut Menu in iOS7?

2014-07-15 Thread Teresa Cochran
Thanks, Wayne. I think there's limited Braille support for the contextual menu.
I've been able to bring up copy, paste, highlight, and other text-related
shortcuts by "performing the default action" on a text element, so I think I'll
try using this function more. It's dots 3-6-space. It's not a true
double-tap-and-hold equivalent, though.

I want to increase the click sounds and other sounds and decrease them too without turning up the iPad volume

2014-07-15 Thread Jen Colley
Hi,
I have an iPad mini. I am trying to increase and decrease the sound of the
clicks and other noises my iPad makes without increasing the voice over volume.
Is there a way to do this?
Also, I’ve noticed that the voice over volume is so loud and the clicks are
almost silent. I’ve also noticed that the ringer volume doesn’t always stay
where it has been previously set but I’m assuming this is some kind of bug
since same thing happens on my iPhone 5c.

Re: Braille Command For Shortcut Menu in iOS7?

2014-07-15 Thread Wayne Merritt
I could be mistaken, but I don't believe there is a command in Braille
for the double tap and hold. If there were, then we would be able to
move apps from one screen to another. Perhaps this will come in iOS 8
or a later iOS update.

Re: KNFB Reader presentation mp3

2014-07-15 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi, What i think was interesting about this presentation is that nobody asked
and so no info was given about the apps ability to read LCD and LED displays on
washing machines, recorders and the like. That's a thing we need as i see it.
Ok we have Goggles and sometimes it works and sometimes, i'd say most times at
least for me it doesn't so it would be interesting to know how the KNFB reader
will stick up against say Goggles when reading displays.

Hi,

Siri understands things like "launch facebook", "open facebook" or
just "facebook", so to answer your question, yes, you can open apps
using Siri.

Cheers,

Re: Icon opening question

2014-07-15 Thread Teresa Cochran
I'm not clear what you may be referring to. Every app on the device is
represented by an icon. Once you find one on your home screen, you can
double-tap it. If you want Siri to open something for you, you don't need to
touch your home screen at all. You can simply ask it to open an app. For
opening items within an app, such as settings or a button, I don't think Siri
will do this. You will have to double-tap the control. Some controls do read as
icons, and Voiceover doesn't indicate whether they're buttons or links. In that
case, you have to go by context.

I hope this answers your question.
