I'v been having to much fun just playing with my iWatch sense Christmas. I
haven't even looked at any iWatch apps but I sure would
like to hear about any really useful apps anybody on the list has found for the
iWatch. I'v only had mine sense Christmas morning
and that doesn't count because people kept pestering me. The wife, are you
gunna come and sit down to dinner with the rest of us?
Do you want cheese cake? Do this or do that! LOL!

Re: Using the Male Siri voicewith VoiceDream Reader

2015-12-28 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Yes, it's true that Voice Dream will stop selling the Ivona voices next year,
but people who have bought the voices previously will still be able to download
them if they lose them. As for the Siri voices, I doubt Apple will let Winston
use them. At least they're finally letting developers use Alex in their apps.

RE: is there a way to fix sound?

2015-12-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Paul,

Yes, as Christopher pointed out, the volume is separate and usually people have
the opposite issue, i.e. they can't hear Voiceover on the external speaker and
think something is terribly wrong with the phone. In this case plugging in a
headset usually shows you that everything is working just fine and the way to
fix the problem is to use the headset to unlock the phone, then when you are on
the home screen unplug the headset and do a two-finger swipe up. This will
start Voiceover reading all the icons on the home screen and if you at thiat
point repeatedly press the volume up button on the phone Voiceover volume will
come back.

I don't know if this was the situation or not, but the head phone jack and the
speaker each have their own volume settings. It's possible the volume on the
head phone jack got turned down very low, so you could still hear the speaker
but nothing with a pair of head phones. Just a thought.

RE: Answering a telephone call while you are already talking to another caller on your iphone

2015-12-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Joseph,

This is useful, but I have a hard time to understand some of what you say since
it appears you used SIRI without proof-reading afterwards. I get “colors” are
probably supposed to be “callers”, but what do you mean by the following:

“What I call beep saying “

“want you look at the calendar of eight”

“slashing the button”

Could you rephrase some of this so we can all get the full meaning?

Sieghard

Hello Michelle, this is how I'm only do that. What I call beep saying, I
normally hit the hold and accept button. Then if I want to navigate between the
two, I use the swap button. I also just recently learned, that if you want.1
color on hold or both colors on hold, want you look at the calendar of eight or
something of that nature, you can simply do this by holding down the mute
button. The swap button, slashing the buttons, Can be found after you hide the
keypad. I Hope this helps and if you need any more assistance, feel free to
reach out.

3.5mm headphone jack rumour again

2015-12-28 Thread Terje Strømberg
Hi,

3.5mm headphone jack rumour again. Norwegian hifi magazine have heard that it
may be some truth because the lightning port supports better sound. Therefore
it makes sense if apple music streaming service plans to provide 24bit 96Khz
music streaming files wich lightning cable design supports i.e. only lightning
port on the next iPhone model. Headphone with lightning cables.

In any case, then we need a new external battery case with 3.5mm jack.
Waterproof, good design et cetera.

Take care

I don't know if this was the situation or not, but the head phone jack
and the speaker each have their own volume settings. It's possible the
volume on the head phone jack got turned down very low, so you could
still hear the speaker but nothing with a pair of head phones. Just a
thought.

I answered two of the three questions regarding my Apple TV, good news and bad news.

2015-12-28 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I did some investigating, and I got half of two questions to work. I'll give
the good news first, then the bad news.

First for the good news. I figured out how to read the serial number on my
Apple TV 4 Gen by character. You first turn the roter to explore, flick up and
down to read what's on the screen by elements, and once you get to the serial
number, turn the roter to words, flick down to get past the words "serial
number", turn the roter to characters, then flick up and down to read the
serial number. The only thing that VoiceOver doesn't do is to give the
phonetic of letters, alpha for A, as an example. Once you have finished
reading the serial number, or whatever you want, turn the roter to navigate so
you can flick around the screen and be able to activate items.

Now for the bad news, and this concerns the NFL app. Once I figured out how to
navigate on the screen, I went back into the NFL app and got to where the
activation code is displayed. I could navigate to it, but VoiceOver doesn't
say anything for the characters. Oh well. I'll wait for sighted help to get
it working, unless someone has another idea.

Have a good day, and don't work too hard.

Do you know that you can turn the volume up on the watch? Do a two finger

Only issues I have with Apple Watch:
1. The volume is absolutely terrible in crowds. You have to use a

2. VoiceOver has a terrible, terrible lag. Also takes at least 3 seconds
to launch an app. Hopefully Apple Watch 2 will fix these issues.

Re: Benefits of Apple Watch

2015-12-28 Thread Chuck Dean
Hi Alan,
I have found a headset at Amazon, that can connect to both my Apple Watch and
my iPhone 6 simultaneously. It's only about $25, and works really really well.
It has a very large battery, so it will work the entire day.
It's only drawback, is that microphone seems a little week. But when you
dictate onto this Apple Watch, the Apple Watch is microphone is the default. So
90% of the time it's not an issue.

playback from the watch, so that VoiceOver doesn't go through the speakers.

I knit, and I'm doing a pattern where I need to count rows. I just got an
app for the watch called Clicker that is a counter; you double-tap it when
you want to increase the count. It's perfect for working with this
 knitting pattern.

I recently played a game called The Martian, where you're trying to help a
guy stranded on Mars make it home. There was an Apple Watch component
where I could see the character's vital signs. This is whimsical, but fun.

And I agree with Robert that having a timer on my wrist that alerts me
 silently is really helpful.

I also love being able to see the current temperature on my wrist, and
being able to turn the digital crown a few times to see what the
temperature is forecast to be later in the day.

 I hope that helps.

 Best,
 Anna

Re: is there a way to fix sound?

2015-12-28 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't know if this was the situation or not, but the head phone jack
and the speaker each have their own volume settings. It's possible the
volume on the head phone jack got turned down very low, so you could
still hear the speaker but nothing with a pair of head phones. Just a
thought.

Hi.

I just received an Apple TV 4 Gen from my Dad and Stepmother for Christmas.
I’ve successfully gotten it set up, and, for the most part I understand it.
However, I have some questions to ask, and I’ll list them in later messages.
In case I don’t get answers to them, I’d like to have the number for Apple
Accessibility so I can call them and find out what I need to know.

Thanks in advance for the information.

Re: Benefits of Apple Watch

2015-12-28 Thread Alan Paganelli
Nancy, I have found one really cool thing about my watch. When getting a
message, and I tap reply, a popup comes up with reply with text? or Email. So
I'll select text and then another popup comes up with a very well thought out
list of possible replies such as on my way, yes, sure thing etc and just
tapping on it inverts it and it's quick. I have only had my iWatch sense
Christmas Day but I find it most handy.

How do I search in iBlink Radio on the Apple TV 4 Gen?

2015-12-28 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi again.

This is the last question I have, at least for now. I downloaded the iBlink
Radio app, and I understand it, all except for searching for something. I
select the search option, and I don't know what to do to activate the keyboard
to search. I've flicked around the screen, and get the bong noise that
indicates I'm at the edge of the screen. Pressing on the touch pad doesn't
activate a keyboard. How does the search work?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I just use one of my local network iOS apps. In my circumstance, I prefer
KTLA as I found the NBC and ABC apps were sending me too many alerts which
didn't really have anything to do with local breaking news. I.E. Watch
tonight's broadcast for the weather report. Don’t' forget to catch so and
so reporter and his undercover exposé, etc. Some people may like that sort
of thing so it's really up to you how much you wish to be interrupted.
Anyway... a local network app will probably fit your needs. Just try them
out and see which one works best for you. Keep in mind though, having more
than one app will most likely cause you to receive multiple alerts about the
same exact event.

Is there a way to read the activation code in the NFL app on the Apple TV 4 Gen?

2015-12-28 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi again.

This is the second of three questions that I have, and, more accurately, this
one and the next concern apps. I downloaded the NFL app to the Apple TV. I've
used it on a 3 Gen model, and I know how to activate it. You read the code
that's on the screen, and enter it into a web site. The 3 Gen gave cryptic
information, but the code could be read by VoiceOver. On the 4 Gen, however,
I'm encountering a slight problem. I get to the screen where the code is
displayed, and VoiceOver tells what to do, and it says to enter the following
code, but it doesn't say what it is. Is there any to have VoiceOver tell the
code? I could try to navigate the screen by different units, and I've asked
about how to do that in a prior message.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

How do I read information on the Apple TV 4 Gen by character?

2015-12-28 Thread Kevin Minor

Hi.

One thing I'd like to copy down from my Apple TV 4 Gen is its serial number.
When I go into the About screen, the entire contents of the screen is read, and
the serial number is read very quickly. I'd like to navigate this screen, and
review the serial number by character. I turn the rotar to characters, but I
don't know how to move around. Flicking on the touch pad doesn't give any
response. How do I move by whatever element I want?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Just recently, a watch app became available that allows one to get the
time presented in vibration patterns. This means that one can silently
check the time without disturbing others with VoiceOver. The app is called
Timebuz. There is a new app called iReg which allows one to make audio

Apple Watch is fully accessible with VoiceOver.

2015-12-28 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I just received an Apple TV 4 Gen from my Dad and Stepmother for Christmas.
I've successfully gotten it set up, and, for the most part I understand it.
However, I have some questions to ask, and I'll list them in later messages.
In case I don't get answers to them, I'd like to have the number for Apple
Accessibility so I can call them and find out what I need to know.

Thanks in advance for the information.

i believe it's VDR. The last update of the app was way prior to the

As I know, IVONA voices won't be supported for Voice Dream any more

Re: Keys to go blue tooth keyboard

2015-12-28 Thread Jennie Facer
I want to explain the function of Quick Nav.
When you have it turned off, you can use the up and down arrows to move up a
line. You can use the right and lift arrows to move by character. When it is is
on, you can do the main functions and you can use the roter by pressing up
arrow plus left arrow or left arrow plus right arrow together to move by roter
setting. Then you use the up and down arrows by themselves to move up or down
depending on where your roter is.
Sending texts has become a lot easier with iOS 9. All you have to do when you
are done typing the message, is press enter once. It will send your message. If
you want to make a new line on purpose, you press the option key plus enter.

I hope this has helped you a little bit. If you have any more questions, don't
hesitate to ask.

putting the backup on it started it again so something must be wrong, but I
have no idea what or where to start with trying to fix the issue.

All I hear is a bad staticky sound when inserting the pods, same with
multiple sets.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

  Thank you.

Hi all,
Can anyone suggest an accessible app for getting local news? I've tried
breaking news, but can't figure out how to change the settings. Maybe
there's a way to do this in the news app already on the phone, but not
sure about that.

Any suggestions are welcome.

There is a pouch that has room to carry a few other items as well. It has a
good size clip that closes with a magnet which is on the clip as well as the

I believe the pouch is made by Kangaroo. My female friend has one and I have

Speaking of the texting abbreviations, I had a very humorous experience a

A lady close to my age was sending me text messages, and Voiceover would

I was about to confront her with the fact that I thought calling me "grams"
was inappropriate as she is not my granddaughter. Then I thought to read by
character with voiceover. What she intended to say was, "Hi. Good morning",
using the g m as a text abbreviation for good morning. We all had a good
laugh about it, and, yes, any texts I get from this person still say "Hi,
Grams".

Re: Benefits of Apple Watch

2015-12-28 Thread Chuck Dean
When people ask me do I like my Apple watchI tell them that it will not do
anything that my iPhone can't do, but I do not have to pull my phone out of
my pocket 50 times a day, so it reduces the risk of dropping it.

And I love the Apple pay on the watch. I use it every day.

Just on the watch face I get the temperature, time, my next appointment,
the date, the Apple stock price, and a timer.
If I double tap any of these complications I get even more information.
Lots of information, and I haven't even gone into the app list. Of course,
you can customize your watch face any way you want.

My two favorite apps Transit
,

and RSS on Watch.

There is no keyboard on the watch, but the dictation function works very
well. I have used it hundreds of times and it has only made one mistake.

I am very happy with my 38mm stainless watch, but I have always been a
gadget nut.

how do you open an app with the keyboard (double tap) or send a text,

RE: Accessible app for local news

2015-12-28 Thread Cristóbal
I just use one of my local network iOS apps. In my circumstance, I prefer KTLA
as I found the NBC and ABC apps were sending me too many alerts which didn't
really have anything to do with local breaking news. I.E. Watch tonight's
broadcast for the weather report. Don’t' forget to catch so and so reporter
and his undercover exposé, etc. Some people may like that sort of thing so it's
really up to you how much you wish to be interrupted.
Anyway... a local network app will probably fit your needs. Just try them out
and see which one works best for you. Keep in mind though, having more than one
app will most likely cause you to receive multiple alerts about the same exact
event.

Subject: accesseable app for local news

Hi all,
Can anyone suggest an accessible app for getting local news? I've tried
breaking news, but can't figure out how to change the settings. Maybe there's a
way to do this in the news app already on the phone, but not sure about that.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,
Don

Re: Benefits of Apple Watch

Hi

No. No touch screen keyboard. You use dictation, emoji’s, and depending on the
app you can have some pretyped responses.

RE: Keys to go blue tooth keyboard

2015-12-28 Thread Kathy and Wilda
Thanks for this. I am assuming that quick nav has to be on in order for the
Bluetooth to function with the Iphone? My next question how do you open an app
with the keyboard (double tap) or send a text,

Or do you have to use the phone to perform these functions?

If you have quick nav off, press control+option+space, or
control+windows+space, if you come from a Windows world. If quick nav is on,
press the up and down arrows together. to turn quick nav on or off, press the
right arrow and the left arrow together.

A new app called iFidget

2015-12-28 Thread Richard Turner
I just learned of a new, free, app from the New Mexico Commission for the
Blind called iFidget. The description explains the intent of the app. I've
pasted the description and the link to the U.S. app store below.

I don't know if it is available outside the United States.

iFidget, Free

Description

iFidget is an app designed to help people with a range of habits from
rocking back and forth to restless leg syndrome or even just constant
fidgeting. It has an incredibly simple design, but it has a very big future.

iFidget is designed to be used while you're sitting. It can be set to
vibrate or play a sound when it detects that you aren't sitting still.
iFidget attempts to tell the difference between somebody who is rocking,
fidgeting or moving constantly vs somebody who is just shifting their weight
at a table.

iFidget can be a very useful therapeutic tool for those who start these
habits subconsciously and would like to take the first step towards stopping
them.

RE: case for iPhone 5 c to sell

2015-12-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Looks like you bought it from Amazon, so just as a suggestion as this might be
easier, why not just return it for a refund? You usually even get a free
shipping label when you return something to Amazon and this way you don’t have
to wait for somebody who still has an iPhone 5C and who wants a case. If you
haven’t done a return to Amazon, it’s really easy. Just log into your account,
find the purchase in your history and click on the button to return it. You
are asked to select a reason and it’s all very accessible.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: vibration on iphone 4S.

2015-12-28 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

The phone doesn't vibrate when you are turning it off. It does vibrate while
it's booting up, but only if it's connected to power.

Best,
Anna

RE: vibration on iphone 4S.

2015-12-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mario,

The only time you will feel a vibration is if you power the phone on when it is
plugged in. There is no vibration if you turn the phone off and there is also
no vibration when the phone boots up on battery power. Voiceover will, however,
speak when the phone powers up so you'll know when it's ready to go.

Sieghard

Re: Benefits of Apple Watch

2015-12-28 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

I love getting silent notifications via buzz patterns from the watch. And I
know I'm less likely to miss notifications of things like text messages when
I'm in a noisy place, which I appreciate.

I like being able to plug my iPhone into our car stereo and control music
playback from the watch, so that VoiceOver doesn't go through the speakers.

I knit, and I'm doing a pattern where I need to count rows. I just got an app
for the watch called Clicker that is a counter; you double-tap it when you want
to increase the count. It's perfect for working with this knitting pattern.

I recently played a game called The Martian, where you're trying to help a guy
stranded on Mars make it home. There was an Apple Watch component where I could
see the character's vital signs. This is whimsical, but fun.

And I agree with Robert that having a timer on my wrist that alerts me silently
is really helpful.

I also love being able to see the current temperature on my wrist, and being
able to turn the digital crown a few times to see what the temperature is
forecast to be later in the day.

I hope that helps.

Best,
Anna

RE: Benefits of Apple Watch

2015-12-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Nancy,

I would, at this point, wait a couple of months as there are rumours that Apple
is going to release a second generation Apple Watch and one would suspect that
with a new, immature product there will be a fair bit of benefit in waiting for
the second generation model especially if it is likely to be announced in the
next couple of months.

Apple used to often have a spring product launch years ago and then everything
went to a September and October time frame, but now there is talk that Apple is
going to release a new, 4 inch iPhone 6 as well as the second generation Apple
Watch and if I remember correctly I heard something about March.

Hi Nancy and list,

I love being able to read and reply to tweets, text messages and email on my
Apple watch. This is particularly great when I am in a situation where taking
out my phone is undesirable.

I use my watch to time activities and the alarm function to keep me on track.
It is a great time keeper.

Just recently, a watch app became available that allows one to get the time
presented in vibration patterns. This means that one can silently check the
time without disturbing others with VoiceOver. The app is called Timebuz. There
is a new app called iReg which allows one to make audio recordings using just
the watch.

Apple Watch is fully accessible with VoiceOver.

Good luck with your decision.

Hi!
There's nothing revolutionary in the podcast. Everything works the same as the
non-BT models and the advantage is you can operate the pot using the fully
accessible iOS app. If you're satisfied with the current pot you have and
you're able to operate it with no sighted help than getting the BT model is not
a good idea from my point of view.
I was researching a bit to order this myself but BT models are not yet to be
shipped to Europe and non BT models are shipped only from UK and they are about
30% more expensive so I'm stuck for a moment xD.

Mary, at least the model I have is not touch screen. The buttons are sort of

I just looked at the BT version and it's currently selling for $179 which is
substantially lower than it was when I purchased my original instant pot. It
was close to $300 then so $179 really looks like a deal since the standard 6qt
model sells for $118. I'd definitely spend the extra $60 for the convenience
and better accessibility of the BT model. I'm thinking about ordering one but
need to listen to that podcast first.

Thanks, Rick. I wish I had known this earlier. There was a big sale on the
regular instant pot before Christmas. And I was looking into purchasing it, but
then I read an article that seemed to indicate that there was a touch screen on
the front. So that made it sound like it was not going to work too well for a
totally blind person. I've never actually seen one. I guess I will have to keep
looking for a sale.

The buttons are definitely fairly tactile but I nevertheless put some lock dots

The cooker is also very safe. There is no way you can open it once it comes up

Hello,
Settings, general, accessibility, voice over, rotor. Add braille to your rotor.
Now, open something like notes, where you can practise. Flick the rotor to
braille, and see how you go. Just a few notes:
Space: 1 finger to the right. Delete: 1 finger to the left (2 fingers delete a
word) New line: 2 fingers to the right. 3 fingers to the left or right will
change grade. 3 fingers up or down will lock the current orientation, and
unlock it, respectively.

Hi!
Back in the days while I was a member of another blind iOS list one
of the fellow members was trying to get some kind of wish list what
would we all like to see in iOS 7 fro accessibility point of view.
As far as I know, she never managed to compile the list and send it
to Apple but the general idea is still worth a try.
Perhaps we should gather the list of current issues and possible
improovements on some petition site, sign it all together and send
it to Apple.

I disagree that there's nothing Apple can do. Apple can definitely work
with Nuance to get a toggle added as to whether abbreviations are
expanded or not, and then Apple can include a setting for this toggle in
VoiceOver settings. I suspect Apple has quite a bit of influence with
Nuance, and Nuance would listen to Apple when it comes to a feature request..

I find it just an inconvenience myself, and I have other things I'd
rather have Apple address which I consider a higher priority, so I wont'
be dropping a note to Apple accessibility myself.

Hello Kevin,

This happens to me, also.

The other day, I was trying to locate a friend of mine in my contacts, whose name is Al Jones. I couldn't find him until I realized that VoiceOver was pronouncing his name as Alabama Jones. I felt so stupid and then got a little miffed at VoiceOver for trying to do too much.

I wonder if there is a workaround for this?

Hi!
There's nothing revolutionary in the podcast. Everything works the
same as the non-BT models and the advantage is you can operate the
pot using the fully accessible iOS app. If you're satisfied with the
current pot you have and you're able to operate it with no sighted
help than getting the BT model is not a good idea from my point of
view.
I was researching a bit to order this myself but BT models are not
yet to be shipped to Europe and non BT models are shipped only from
UK and they are about 30% more expensive so I'm stuck for a moment

I just looked at the BT version and it's currently selling for $179 which is substantially lower than it was when I purchased my original instant pot. It was close to $300 then so $179 really looks like a deal since the standard 6qt model sells for $118. I'd definitely spend the extra $60 for the convenience and better accessibility of the BT model. I'm thinking about ordering one but need to listen to that podcast first.

And I was looking into purchasing it, but then I read an article that seemed to indicate that there was a touch screen on the front. So that made it sound like it was not going to work too well for a totally blind person. I've never actually seen one. I guess I will have to keep looking for a sale.
