Hi ED,

Not all credit card machines can take a tap of the card and, from what I was

Hey,

I tried this in Walgreens here in Montana (USA). It worked pretty well, and was
pretty quick. I tried it when it was announced, and it wasn’t as accessible as
I would have liked. I still had to put in a pin on the credit card machine.

Thanks,

The article explained that as of today CIBC and Royal Bank credit card

only American express card holders were able to use Apple Pay in Canada (since
last November I think) and not that many people here have American Express
cards and in many stores even some larger chains they aren’t even accepted
since they charge a much higher percentage for the merchant. I accept American
Express at my store and get charged 3.5% whereas I only pay 1.6% for Visa and
Mastercard although there are a few extra fees on top of that 1.6% for premium
cards, corporate cards etc.

When I first started I was asked for my Apple Id password. I then typed in
the card number, tapped next and then selected the expiry date and typed in the

Sieghard,

Apple says you don’t have to but the guy at CIBC told me the wallet app should
be open. I don’t know either way because I haven’t tried it yet. Apple says
you can do it from the locked screen if you tap the home button twice but, if
VO is active, that double tap goes to the app switcher. I kind of gathered
that I would have to unlock the screen and then it should work but, then again,
the guy at CIBC told me the wallet app should be open so, who do I believe.

Any comments anyone?

So long, Siri: How to get Amazon Alexa on your iPhone

Apple's virtual personal assistant Siri was unquestionably a
groundbreaking feature when it first debuted on the iPhone
. It got off to a rocky start — of that, there
is no question — and people still run into aggravating problems every day
with Siri. But Siri has improved dramatically over the years, expanding
its functionality and growing more accurate along the way.
Then, Amazon surprised us all when the Echo speaker

came out of nowhere and introduced the world to Alexa. And now, Alexa has
finally leapt off of Amazon hardware and onto Apple's iPhone and iPad for
  the first time.

Some believe that Alexa was intended to become a core part of Amazon's
smartphone and tablet offerings, but the company's plans were derailed in
light of the fact that the Fire phone was a spectacular flop. Perhaps as a
result, Amazon instead released a line of dedicated speakers including the
  Amazon Echo

  and more affordable Amazon Tap

.
The Echo and Tap serve mainly as delivery mechanisms for Alexa, which is
Amazon's own take on Siri. Alexa is controlled by voice just like Siri,
but its focus is on shopping and connected device controls, in addition to
providing answers to questions a la Siri.
Alexa is no longer confined to the Echo and Tap now that Amazon has given
developers access to various APIs, and the killer software feature is now
finally available on Apple's iPhone and iPad lineup. Amazon's assistant
arrives courtesy of a third-party app called Lexi, which is immediately
available for download in the App Store.
Simply install the $5 Lexi app and log into your Amazon account, and
you'll instantly gain access to Alexa. Ask questions like "what's the
weather like?" or "what time is the Yankee game?" and Alexa will serve up
answers in no time. Of course, you'll also be able to enjoy Amazon
integration, so you can order products or add items to a shopping list
with simple voice commands like "add toilet paper to my shopping list" or
  "buy more toothpaste."

the 6 digit code. I then got this message congratulating me and my card was

In the stores where I am known, they have suggested charging twice if the
amount was over $100 so I made a payment of $100 and then another payment of
the balance. That’s with tapping my card but, he told me the same can be done
if the clerk is willing to.

I have a feeling that Apple Pay adoption here in Canada will be very fast since
when it comes to contactless payments we are a lot further along as stores in
the States. Here chip cards have been around for many years, I haven’t signed a
credit card receipt in a long time instead I just stick my card into the reader
just like a bank card and enter my PIN. In most grocery stores, convenience
stores, drug marts, department stores and so on I can simply tap my card if the
transaction is less than $100 (the limit is up to each store). Of course this
means you better take care of your credit card and report it lost or stolen
right away if it disappears since anybody who has the card can tap it and that
of course is where Apple Pay is more secure since it uses Touch Id or your
phone’s passcode to authorize the transaction.

If I have a chance to try it later maybe at Shopper’s Drug Mart or Safeway I’ll
report as to whether it worked or not.

Regards,

Sieghard

"Where to Go" dog relief area app issue

2016-05-10 Thread R VanLant
Hi,

Is anyone here using the "Where to Go" app that tells you dog relief areas
in airports? I downloaded it yesterday for the first time. Whenever I
click on an airport name to show the relief area for that airport, the app
hangs for a second then takes me to my phone's home screen. The app is
still in the app switcher, but it did not load the airport information. Is
this just me? I thought I read about this in a book a couple years ago,
but this is my first time trying it.

Sometimes when I’m using VO, it begins to sound like there are two voices at

then back on. If I have to do this lots, it’s time consuming and annoying. I’m

think it’s 3. Anyway, it’s the latest update. (smile)

Re: VoiceOver Speaks Through The Earpiece

2016-05-10 Thread Julian
Hi there,

Every now and then I also experienced similar behavior. Especially, after I've
used apps such as what's app and Roger. What works for me, is to kill all the
apps in the app switcher. You might want to try this and see if it works before
rebooting your phone. Good luck, HTH.

VoiceOver Speaks Through The Earpiece

Hi, list.

I have Iphone5s with IOS9.31.

Sometimes VoiceOver switches to the earpiece and I have to restart the phone
in order to bring VO back to the main speaker.

Is there a way that I don't have to restart the phone to switch VO back to
main speaker?

Thanks!

Re: My first attempt to use Apple Pay, was: Apple Pay finally gets main stream support in Canada

2016-05-10 Thread Wayne Merritt
For what it's worth, when I have used Apple Pay in the States, I have
held my phone close to the sensor with my finger already on the home
button, and most of the time the transactions go through in mere
seconds. A few times they haven't and I have had to enter my passcode
or pull a debit card from a pocket. I hope you get it working, eh.

Downloading & running Workflows from Safari

2016-05-10 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

I was Googling around & came across this webpage of WorkFlow Galory. One of
the Workflows is downloading Vimeo videos.
http://www.workflowgallery.co/
Has anyone successfully opened & ran a Workflow they found via Safari?

I’m not having any luck so far. The one thing I cannot tell is if the Workflow
is continuing to run & takes a long time. There is a done button, do I tap
that?

Any guidance is appreciated. Personally, I’d love to tweet this Workflow, so
the Video downloads to my DropBox.

Thanks,
Traci

the pick-up window the lady gave him the machine, I leaned over and held my
iPhone 6S Plus up to it after waking it up (I was on the lockscreen). I saw
that it popped up with my CIBC Visa and I put my thumb on the home button, but
nothing happened. I finally tapped on “Use Passcode” and the keypad came up,
but I was not able to enter my passcode because the phone/Voiceover became so
entirely sluggish that I couldn’t do anything. Of course it was lunch hour and
cars were piling up behind us. I tried to enter my passcode but couldn’t do it
because of the sluggishness of the phone.
I finally pulled out my Mastercard and had barely tapped it against the machine
when it beeped and the transaction was approved.
So, Apple Pay 0, tap method 1. I have to try again another time maybe at a
place where there is no time pressure. I did go into Settings > Passcode and
Touch Id afterwards to make sure, but Touch Id was enabled for Apple Pay so
that was not the reason.

Sieghard

Subject: Apple Pay finally gets main stream support in Canada

Hi fellow Canadians,

This morning I was browsing through the news articles with the CBC News app on
my iPhone and in the Tech and Science section found an article which surprised
me and also made me quite happy.
The article explained that as of today CIBC and Royal Bank credit card holders
can add their credit cards in the Wallet app and use Apple Pay. So far only
American express card holders were able to use Apple Pay in Canada (since last
November I think) and not that many people here have American Express cards and
in many stores even some larger chains they aren’t even accepted since they
charge a much higher percentage for the merchant. I accept American Express at
my store and get charged 3.5% whereas I only pay 1.6% for Visa and Mastercard
although there are a few extra fees on top of that 1.6% for premium cards,
corporate cards etc.
Anyhow, the article went on to say that Bank of Montreal Mastercards should
follow soon and that Scotia and TD debit cards are not far behind.
I am a Scotia Bank customer both for my business and personal accounts, but I
do have a CIBC Aeroplan Gold Visa so I promptly opened Wallet and within a
minute or two I had added my card.
I was still in bed as it was early and too lazy to go get my card to try and
take a picture of it so I chose to add it manually.
When I first started I was asked for my Apple Id password. I then typed in the
card number, tapped next and then selected the expiry date and typed in the
3-digit card verification code. After tapping next again I was asked to select
a verification option and here I had email or text message as an option. I
selected text message and 2 seconds after I tapped Next I received a text
message with a 6-digit code which I had to type in, after that I received the
message that my card had been added.
It will be interesting to see if this works at most places where contactless
transactions are already an option which is very common here. The article says
this:

"With the support of two of the largest banks in Canada, BMO Financial Group
and Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), consumer adoption of Apple Pay is expected to
increase significantly," the statement said. "Many of Moneris's largest
customers, including McDonald's Restaurants of Canada Limited, are 100 per cent
contactless enabled and ready to accept Apple Pay."
London Drugs, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, Petro-Canada, and Pizza Hut are among
the stores ready for Apple Pay, according to Apple's website.

When I installed Roger it just showed up somewhere and you basically add Alexa

Hi fellow Canadians,

It will be interesting to see if this works at most places where contactless

of course is where Apple Pay is more secure since it uses Touch Id or your

If I have a chance to try it later maybe at Shopper’s Drug Mart or Safeway I’ll
report as to whether it worked or not.

Sieghard

London Drugs, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, Petro-Canada, and Pizza Hut are among
the stores ready for Apple Pay, according to Apple's website.

I have a feeling that Apple Pay adoption here in Canada will be very fast since
when it comes to contactless payments we are a lot further along as stores in
the States. Here chip cards have been around for many years, I haven't signed a
credit card receipt in a long time instead I just stick my card into the reader
just like a bank card and enter my PIN. In most grocery stores, convenience
stores, drug marts, department stores and so on I can simply tap my card if the
transaction is less than $100 (the limit is up to each store). Of course this
means you better take care of your credit card and report it lost or stolen
right away if it disappears since anybody who has the card can tap it and that
of course is where Apple Pay is more secure since it uses Touch Id or your
phone's passcode to authorize the transaction.
If I have a chance to try it later maybe at Shopper's Drug Mart or Safeway I'll
report as to whether it worked or not.

RE: ITUNES AND UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 10

2016-05-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If you have some sort of external drive or USB stick large enough it's best if
you simply copy the entire iTunes folder to it. In case you have to reinstall
iTunes you can do so, then before you open the program for the first time
delete the iTunes folder the install created in your Music folder and replace
it with the one you copied from your old machine. Now if you open iTunes all
should be as it was on your old machine.

I know this is not what some say is necessary and it's beyond the scope of this
list, but I assume you are on Jaws 17 and I would recommend that you completely
uninstall it before the upgrade and then reinstall it once the Windows 10
update has finished and everything is working. It "should" go OK without this
as long as you are on one of the Jaws versions of course which support Windows
10, but when I did the update on my laptop with Jaws in place all sort of
things were weird and not talking properly. I then actually went a step further
and completely wiped the computer, repartitioned and reformatted the hard drive
(an SSD in my case) and reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch after I used the
Media Creation Tool to put Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit on a USB stick from which I
could install. After that I reinstalled Jaws and all worked beautifully. Of
course this also was a year ago and Windows 10 is a lot further along than it
was then. My Mom upgraded her PC without any issues and so did my brother.

Subject: ITUNES AND UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 10

Hi all,

The time has come for me to upgrade the computer on which I have iTunes
and I really need advice, as soon as possible, as it's being sorted
tomorrow by a tech friend who knows much better than I, but he doesn't
use iTunes.

Can anyone please tell me what I need to do to ensure that I can get
back into the programme, preferably without having to do all the initial
setting up and putting all my music there once again. Of course I
realise the upgrade itself may not go to plan and will deal with those
eventualities, but would be so glad of some advice on how I should do
this, assuming all works well. My other PC does not have iTunes on it
but I do have all my music safely stored away, should I really come unstuck.

Please let me know specifically what I need to backup for iTunes to work
correctly.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

RE: Problems charging iPhone

2016-05-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Wayne,

I would try to isolate the issue. From what you said there are 5 variables
involved:

1. the power bar plugged into your wall outlet which you said you already
changed
2. the Apple wall adapter which is plugged into your power bar
3. the Lightning cable
4. The Apple battery case
5. The iPhone itself

OK, so you can't really do anything about the iPhone itself and you said you
already changed the power bar and Lightning cable. This leaves the Apple wall
adapter, maybe you have another one or a third-party USB adapter, you can use
any one you have and, for that matter, you could try the Apple wall adapter
when charging another device, maybe you have a Bluetooth headset, speaker or
keyboard.
I am not exactly sure how the Apple battery case works. I assume it is
permanently on the phone and connected to the phone's Lightning port and that
the case itself has a Lightning port where you plug it in. If so I would take
the case off for a day or two and plug the Lightning cable directly into the
phone. If that works consistently there is always a chance the case is
defective.
If you still find the phone doesn't start charging after establishing your wall
adapter and Lightning cables work (I would also try and remove the power bar
completely for testing, you should definitely go to an Apple store. Maybe some
dirt is in the Lightning port of either the phone or the case preventing a good
connection or it could simply be a hardware issue.
Another good way to test your Lightning cable with just the phone is by
plugging it into a computer. If it's connected to a USB port on the computer
and it works reliably but it does not when using the wall adapter then maybe
the wall adapter is defective. The phone won't charge as fast when it's
connected to a computer, but it will charge and you can test it that way.

Subject: Problems charging iPhone

All,
I am having some issues charging my iPhone 6S with the Apple Smart Battery
case. Up until about 10 days ago I wasn't having any problems at all. I started
noticing that my phone was not charged over night. I always plug it in by my
bed so it can charge over night. I had been plugging it into a power strip with
a 6 foot chord. I started noticing that when plugging my phone into the
lightning cable, several of the outlets did not register that the phone was
plugged in, meaning I did not get the audible tone or vibration when plugging
the phone in. I tried a few different outlets and finally disconnected the
power strip, replaced it with another shorter strip but attached an extension
chord to the new shorter strip, and plugged my iPhone square plug and lightning
cable into that. I did the switch a couple of days ago. Sunday night the phone
charged without any trouble. Last night when I plugged the phone in, there was
a delay of several minutes before the phone made the audio tone and displayed
the charging message. However, that didn't last long since within 30 seconds,
the phone had gone back to being on battery status even though it was securely
attached to the lightning cable. When this issue first came up, I switched
lightning cables and that worked for awhile, but I'm wondering if I need to
swap lightning cables again. Short of going to an Apple Store, I can't figure
out what might be going on. Granted, I've got the smart battery case on my
iPhone 6S, which means the battery should last all day and into the night and
shouldn't be an issue. But my battery does not last nearly as long if it starts
at 50 percent or 80 percent when I unplug it from the charger, after a night of
not charging. Anyone have any ideas? Since this appears to be a random issue,
how would I explain it to Apple, since if they plug it in, the phone is likely
to register that it is connected to a charger.
I don't want for it to seem like nothing is wrong, and then come home and have
the same issue come up.

Thanks,
Wayne Merritt

RE: Audible with Voiceover Tutorial

2016-05-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I am not aware of any Podcasts but if you ask your questions I'm sure you will
probably get good answers since I know many people here including myself use
the Audible app on a daily bases and are very familiar with it. Overall I would
say the app is fairly straight forward and while there have been a few
accessibility challenges along the way, it's currently working pretty well. I
just wish they would bring back the ability to delete books using the rotor for
Voiceover users. Finding the master delete button and then the correct delete
button for a particular book isn't too difficult, but I find it is a bit clumsy
and think it could be handled more elegantly by giving sighted users the option
to swipe to delete and Voiceover users the option to delete via the rotor.

Hi Wayne,

I have had this same case on my iPhone 6S for about a month, and sometimes it
does nothing when I plug the lightning cable in. So when that happens, I unplug
it from the case, reboot the phone, then plug it back in and all is well. Kind
of a pain, but not much of one. Smile! Hope this works for you!

RE: App that wil show current location with name of town

2016-05-10 Thread Cristóbal
I just asked Siri “where am I located?” and it gave me the full address. Of
course, it was to the house located behind me, but close enough for this little
test. And yes, the entire address including city was spoken.

Enable tracking via native iOS maps app and you can obtain address, street,
city and state details. BlindSquare is great, but the maps app will do the
trick.

Blind Square will speak the intersection, address and city when you shake your

Have you looked at the native Maps app, or perhaps Google Maps? Also,
I think you can simply say, "Location" to Siri and get some of that
info too. Depending on what you're looking for and what your goal is,
these may meet your needs. There are probably apps which say the
location along with the city if you just want that. Also, consider
things like BlindSquare which can tell you that along with lots of

2016-05-10 Thread Ed Worrell
Hello,

You could use Pedometer++ It doesn’t use GPS and doesn’t drain the battery in
the slightest, and best of all it’s free. If you want to support the developer
you can donate or tip I can’t remember which. It is not mandatory as you get

Problems charging iPhone

2016-05-10 Thread Wayne Merritt
All,
I am having some issues charging my iPhone 6S with the Apple Smart
Battery case. Up until about 10 days ago I wasn't having any problems
at all. I started noticing that my phone was not charged over night. I
always plug it in by my bed so it can charge over night. I had been
plugging it into a power strip with a 6 foot chord. I started noticing
that when plugging my phone into the lightning cable, several of the
outlets did not register that the phone was plugged in, meaning I did
not get the audible tone or vibration when plugging the phone in. I
tried a few different outlets and finally disconnected the power
strip, replaced it with another shorter strip but attached an
extension chord to the new shorter strip, and plugged my iPhone square
plug and lightning cable into that. I did the switch a couple of days
ago. Sunday night the phone charged without any trouble. Last night
when I plugged the phone in, there was a delay of several minutes
before the phone made the audio tone and displayed the charging
message. However, that didn't last long since within 30 seconds, the
phone had gone back to being on battery status even though it was
securely attached to the lightning cable. When this issue first came
up, I switched lightning cables and that worked for awhile, but I'm
wondering if I need to swap lightning cables again. Short of going to
an Apple Store, I can't figure out what might be going on. Granted,
I've got the smart battery case on my iPhone 6S, which means the
battery should last all day and into the night and shouldn't be an
issue. But my battery does not last nearly as long if it starts at 50
percent or 80 percent when I unplug it from the charger, after a night
of not charging. Anyone have any ideas? Since this appears to be a
random issue, how would I explain it to Apple, since if they plug it
in, the phone is likely to register that it is connected to a charger.
I don't want for it to seem like nothing is wrong, and then come home
and have the same issue come up.

Thanks,
Wayne Merritt

Re: can't seem to change vo voice

2016-05-10 Thread Shermeen Khan
Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. Sieghard, I took your advice
and added Alex to the roder, and somehow that solved the issue, but
only because I could change the language using the roder, but still
couldn't do it the "old-fashioned way" i.e. by just selecting it like
I used to be able to do. Ah well, all's well that ends well though, I
guess. I've reverted back to Samantha though, as Alex will always
sound better to me on a mac than on an IPhone, despite the high
quality speaker. It's as if he takes pauses in awkward places.

Anyway, thanks again, everyone!

Re: Notifications from the iOS Mail app from specific messages

2016-05-10 Thread Wayne Merritt
Thanks a lot for this. When looking into your steps, I discovered that
notify Me is in the More option in the actions rodar. Now, if I want
to stop a message or thread from notifying me, would I go through the
same process? I enabled Notify Me on a message I sent last night, but
then when I looked in the More item again, after the other things it
simply said Notify Me. There did not appear to be a way to turn these
notifications off. Thoughts?

RE: App that wil show current location with name of town

2016-05-10 Thread Richard Turner
Ifind Siri often just shows you the address and city when you ask for your
location, or sometimes even when you say "where am I?"
If you say "tell me where I am" it more often will speak the information
instead of just displaying it.

Blind Square will speak the intersection, address and city when you shake your
device.

Also, consider
things like BlindSquare which can tell you that along with lots of
other information.

Smart Keyboardfor the iPad Pro.

2016-05-10 Thread Jennie Facer
Does anyone have one of these keyboards? I am having a very hard time getting
the caps lock plus space bar to work. It won't let me press up and down arrows
together to do a one-finger double tap. I have to use VO plus space bar. It is
really touchy. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Jenn

Hello,
You need to find out which accent India uses, as when I just switched language,
my accent stayed. In this case, it was British female. In other words, is India

Any possibility to use english india seeri male voice for voiceover?

2016-05-10 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafay
I am here in India using iPhone SE 64gb. I like seeri male voice. I
went into setting>general>seeri, the selected language is there
"English India", and voice is seeri male. I want to use this voice as
main voice for voiceover. I am checking under voiceover setting, there
is no English india so that I could choos this seeri male as given
under US, Australia and UK languages. any possible method for doing
so?
Struggling to understand these difficult accent voices.

Re: Samantha Speaking Non-alphanumeric Characters when UK Daniel Set as Default Voice

2016-05-10 Thread Craig Werner
The suggestion of switching countries is a sensible one, but it seems
to me too radical a step to take to rectify a problem that should not
be occurring in the first place. Dealing with two voices is not the
end of the world for me.I'll let apple sort things out from
here. Thank you for your thoughts, though.

My "Recents" on my old 5 and my current 6S have 100 entries. Each entry may
refer to multiple incoming and outgoing calls. I just always thought 100 was
the iPhone default because i sure didn't set anything.

Have fun!

RE: A strange concept of what constituteS * recen

2016-05-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can't, I've been an iPhone user for a pretty long time and have been on
this list for about as long, but never have I found such a setting anywhere or
heard about it before.
I guess one can use the 3-finger single tap gesture to hear what row one is on
in the recents list and it will also give you the total number of rows, this
would be the easiest way I can think of to find out how many rows/entries there
are. Maybe 200 is the upper limit, I sometimes do a fair number of calls but it
would probably still take me a month to get to that number before I can check
whether it stops at 200 or not.

I use the phone feature on my iPhone very little but a few nights ago when I
had made one of my very
rare calls, I happened to notice "recents" and wondered what might be in
there that I could delete,
and there were calls going back to April 2015 which is when I first got the
thing. One year seems a
very liberal interpretation of recent!

Indeed it is Daren; here’s how you do it:

1) Of course, have the Recents tab in the phone app in focus.
2) Locate the entry you desire.
3) Find and double tap the “More Info” button immediately after the desired
phone number.
4) Depending on whether you want to create an entirely new contact or simply
add the selected number
to an existing contact double click the appropriate number.

That will place you into an edit dialog for the new or existing contact.

Re: Is there an accessible pedometer app?

2016-05-10 Thread Lois Butterfield
In my experience, Run Keeper works very well both for running and walking.

Take care,

I have used run keeper and thought it was pretty helpful. To be honest I have
not tried it in several months so I can't say if it is still fully accessible.
It did do a good job of calculating how far I've walked when I was using it
last summer.

I assume you can change the number of called stored in the recent list. My 4s
stores 200 calls.
