I just wonder what Apple's long term plans are. Are they going to 
eventually sync the SE up with the rest of the IOS products or are they 
going to continue to have multiple hardware releases in the year? I can 
see where a spring release might take some of the thunder away from the 
other smart phone manufacturers who line their product releases up with 
the show in Barcelona, but I also know that operating system development 
is more complicated when you have to support different hardware schedules.

I suppose, but wouldn't this also be true for someone who just bought an 
iPhone 6S? I guess someone might have bought an SE recently thinking 
Apple wouldn't refresh it this fall, because as you said, Apple didn't 
release the SE until the spring, but Apple doesn't make guarantees, and 
if you were going to be upset in this case then you probably should have 
kept waiting to make sure, at least IMHO.


I should confess that I'm not a proponent of waiting myself, although I 
did hold on to my 4S for over four years. Of course it depends on the 
situation. If you've got a phone you're not unhappy with and a new 
release is right around the corner, then sure go ahead and wait. I 
bought my iPhone 4S in the summer, and sure, I could have waited four 
months when the iPhone 5 came out, but then I would have been using my 
old Nokia, which I loved when it was new, for another four months. The 
iPhone 5 was a nicer phone when it came out, but my 4S served me well 
for over four years, and I have no regrets.


That being said, I did make trips to AT twice yearly to check out the 
new batch of iPhones in the fall and the new batch of Samsung phones in 
the spring. Each time, I decided I'd wait another six months to see what 
would come out next. My wife was convinced I'd never get a new phone 
until my 4S fell apart. Of course, in this situation, I had a phone I 
wasn't unhappy with, so I had no problems waiting. With the rumors 
swirling around about what the fall might bring, and given how old my 4S 
was and that it wouldn't be seeing another IOS, I finally decided I 
didn't need to keep waiting, so I took the plunge and finally upgraded 
my 4S this summer.

I tried the update that was released a few days ago: over four restaurants I 
consistently found that when I wanted to choose a beverage, the app would 
crash, and I would lose the order I had put together before the beverage.  
Someone suggested that I get someone cited to use my phone with voiceover off 
and see if the app still crashed:  it turned out that I figured out that I 
could hold my finger on the 20 ounce soda, turn voiceover off with the other 
hand, tap the soda, turn voiceover on, and then be able to choose what I wanted 
without incident . I put a review in the App Store, and DM to GrubHub on 
Twitter to let them know this, saying that if I could choose an entrée, 
appetizer, etc., that I should be able to interact with VoiceOver in the same 
way to choose a Drink.

I don't get that extra text in my edit box when I'm looking for the 
keyboard input button, so maybe that's a phone specific thing. I do 
agree though that the double tap to end the dictation on the iPhone is 
nice. I just find it a bit more inconvenient on Android but not a show 
stopper.


I do use threads when reading my email, and in this way I do definitely 
like Aquamail. If I double tab the message, the thread is expanded in 
line without taking me into a new screen. Again I can just double tap 
the sleet button and select the entire thread to be deleted all at once 
or just select the messages in the thread I want deleted. I find this 
more efficient than having to go into the screen with just the messages 
from the thread in it, work with those messages, and then go back into 
the parent folder. Now that I think about it, Aquamail handles threads a 
bit more like Thunderibrd, which is how I prefer to deal with my 
threaded email.


As I'm working through my messages in Aquamail, I will sometimes delete 
the selected messages as I'm going or wait until I'm done and delete 
them all at once. I agree, a lot of what you prefer is how you like 
working with your email, and I might have tweaked how I do things now 
that I spend more time in Aquamail then I do in Apple's Mail app.

I actually like editing text in Android over the iPhone now. This is mostly 
because is so easy to switch granularity by flicking up or down as opposed to 
using the roter in Apple. I don't have anything against the roter, but I tend 
to have a lot of options in it, so sometimes it takes a few rotations to change 
the granularity.

Why are you saying people would be hopping mad if Apple came out with an 
upgraded smaller form factor phone just six months after the SE came 
out? Are you talking about the same people who get mad when something 
goes on sale after they paid full price for it? I never got this 
reasoning since this would mean the only way to make everyone happy is 
to never put something on sale. I'd assume anyone who knows Apple knows 
they release new phones in the fall, so I'd think anyone who bought an 
SE would know that there would be a chance Apple might include a smaller 
form factor phone in this fall's line up. I don't think Apple would ever 
promise not to refresh a phone model any more frequently than once a 
year. I also don't see what anyone who has an SE would be missing out on 
if Apple upgraded the specs of the SE this fall.

In short: 1. Take my daughter’s old 5C for a few weeks; or 2. Use my upgrade, 
get the SE, and wait for next year because the 7 isn’t worth wasting my upgrade 
or extra money.

Well, I don't find it that easy to find the pause button. If I did, that would 
solve one of my problems. Sometimes, while looking for the pause button, 
because dictation imput has not stopped, I get extra junk in my message, which 
I then have to get rid of. My problem with editing text has to do with Focus 
jumping from the edit box to somewhere else. I agree that up-and-down on the 
navigation granularity is nice. But The ease with which my edit box seems to 
lose focus is a major issue. I don't know if you use threaded conversations or 
not. I do. And I really appreciate being able to just go through mail, read 
what I want and delete as I go, thread by thread. It sounds like you delete all 
your stuff at the end of the email session. I don't always get through all of

I do it your way, but a lot of times in my inbox I hit the edit button, then 
double tap on the message or thread that I want to delete; it says selected, 
and then when I am at the end of my queue I hit trash selected messages at the 
bottom. That's a lot easier for me then flicking up, double tapping to delete, 
and then maybe losing my place in the queue and having to find it again
.

I always wanted the mute switch, when activated, to turn off all sounds 
generated by alerts and notifications, including VoiceOver, and this is 
how it worked for me for a very short period of time, maybe a few months 
with IOS 7. I'm not sure how Apple intended this to work though, and 
I've always found it to be inconsistent. This has always been a bit 
frustrating for me since I want to have my phone on in meetings, so I 
can step out when I get a notification that I'm expecting, but still 
have it silent so it doesn't interrupt the meeting. I also want to be 
able to toggle this behavior on and off and not have to go down a 
settings tree to find this switch. I must admit that after a year or so 
of not being able to figure out what combination of settings would get 
me the behavior I wanted, even through IOS updates, I kind of gave up 
trying, and I think I need to go back and give Ari's suggestion another 
chance.

I'm a bit unclear whether you got your sounds back from your update but
I will say there is an easy way to turn Do Not Disturb on and off:



1.   Place focus on the top line of the screen such as on the time or
other item there.

2.   Do a 3-finger swipe up to open the control center.

3.   Single finger swipe right until do not disturb is announced and
double tap to turn it on or off as needed.

4.   Use the scrub gesture to close the control center.

up or down, but I did find that the Favorite on which I double tapped and held, 
did move. I did this twice, on different stations, and was able to reorder the 
stations within my Favorites, Unfortunately, though there was no audible 
feedback to let me know how far I was moving the Station.

I think I found the steps to add a station after searching that should work.
I just searched for "acb radio mainstream" and under where it says stations, I 
double tapped on acb radio mainstream, the talk of the blind community.
The next screen has a "play enabled button" and a "favorite button." I double 
tapped on play, then favorite.
It went to the screen where it starts playing and you have the exit the now 
playing screen button in the upper left.
On this page, there is also a favorite button. I double tapped on it and then 
it turned into a "favorite on" button, I double tapped on that and it was then 
selected.
I stopped playback, exited that screen, and switched to my favorites screen, 
and ACB Radio Mainstream was the last favorite on that page.
Of course, it took far longer to describe these steps than it took doing it.
But it works.

Hi Gordon,
I have heard there will be some changes in the upcoming version of the stock 
mail app on iOS. It has been talked about in the mainstream technical press. 
Hopefully, it isn't too awful. As for aqua mail, yes, I have played with 
settings. I can certainly delete all of the messages in my inbox quickly 
enough. But what I haven't found a way to do which I can do on iOS, is to 
actually go through my mail and interact with it efficiently,  Reading messages 
and replying as I wish, and or deleting threads I don't want to read with just 
one flick of my finger as I go. Google dictation does seem to be fairly 
accurate. Perhaps it is a little bit more accurate for me than Apple. But 
because I have such a hard time correcting mistakes, which it certainly does 
make, I would rather have Apple, even if it's a little bit less accurate, 
because I can fix it easier. I have heard that Siri is going to get much better 
in the next version. Whether that will carry over to dictation remains to be 
seen of course. Have you tried the app that Kevin recommended on here a little 
while back, inbox by Gmail I think was the name? It only works for Google 
accounts. So if you have things other than Google, then it's not good for you.

I doubt the form factor of the iPhone 7 will be different from the 6/6 Plus and 
6S/6S Plus. My guess is that the new phones this year will be exactly the same 
as for the last 2 years and next year there will be a new form factor.

This may also depend on whether you want the larger screen, more than likely, 
the iphone 7 will have a larger screen as the 6 and 6 plus do, not sure if 
Apple will have a newer SE version with the iphone 7 specs, so if you want the 
smaller screen, the iphone SE might be a good choice, should be interesting to 
see what Apple introduces though.

If it were me, I would use the old phone until you see the 7 and what
it has to offer. You could still get the SE at that point if you want

Regarding the phone's battery, if you have jus the phone itself
without any extra battery cases, then the 6S Plus battery would last
longer. However, if you were to invest in a MofiJuice Pack (probably
misspelled but you know what I mean), or an Apple Smart Battery Case
for the 6S, then your battery life for the 6S will almost be that of
the 6S Plus. Once when I was not able to charge my 6S with the Smart
Battery case over night, the phone and extra case battery lasted me
about 30 hours before I got down to 30 percent or less. This of course
depends on what you do and what apps are open.

What I do is take my thumb, cover the speaker at the bottom of the phone while 
dictating. This lowers the volume enough where it does not capture the 
voiceover.

I've had this happen as well, but not very often. I just turn off speech with a 
three-finger double-tap, do a two-finger double-tap to sttart dictation, do 
another two-finger double-tap to stop dictation, then do another three-finger 
double-tap to turn speech back on when this issue comes up. Like I said, it's 
not too offen, and it's easy enough to deal with, if a bit annoying. What I'm 
more troubled by is the reports on AppleVis about battery life being reduced 
with iOS 9.3.4, in some cases quite seriously.

Try using email from a share she say in Facebook or Safari. Or if you happen to 
use Newsify, try sharing an article from there. Dictate the message that you 
want to put in advance of your article. You will find the problem I guarantee 
it.

Interesting how not a single message about this issue was posted on this list. 
Dictation may not work in 9.3.4, but it definitely worked in previous iOS 9 
versions since I used it all the time before installing iOS 10 beta so I’m not

Tunein has a feature where you can set a record time for a stream, as well as 
specify how long to record it.  I think, however, that you have to have Tunein 
unlocked and displaying to have this to work.  I could be wrong with my info, 
but I know that it will let you record a stream.

16 gig is large compared to what I used to have.  I had a 5c with 8 gig of 
storeage.  Earlier this year I got a 6s plus with 128 gig of storeage.  A 
couple of weeks ago I gave my old iPhone to my Niece.  I'm thrilled with all 
the extra storeage that I now have.

There’s another thing you can check before you call:

 

Go into Settings, and into Notifications, and then go down through all the apps 
until you come to Phone and go into the Phone settings for notifications by 
double tapping it.

 

 

In here you have a lot of control over the different types of phone 
notifications, so make sure they are all set to “on”.

I’m afraid I don’t understand at all the answer you were given which talks 
about “visual voice mail”.

 

My answer to you is that you do actively have to check for the presence of 
voice mail, nothing is going to happen automatically which will bring it to 
your attention.  You can ask Siri to “list new voice mail” when you get back to 
your phone after a period where you were away or had it switched off, or you 
can check the notifications by pulling down the notifications center (by 
touching the statusbar at the top, then using the 3-finger swipe down VoiceOver 
jesture), or you can look at the “phone” item in the “dock” at the bottom of 
the home screen (if you have any voice mail it will show up there).

At first, this didn’t work. I tried it multiple times with different stations. 
No luck. My sighted daughter tried with VO off, several times with several 
stations, and no luck.

I wrote the TuneIn support with a 2nd request in the Subject and heard back 
within 30 minutes. They suggested trying Power off and on, but I had already 
done that. Then they suggested deleting and reinstalling the app, which I did. 
After signing in, all my old Favorites were there. When I followed your advice 
below, it worked!

I then asked TuneIn support about reoredering within Favorites. They said to 
just double tap and drag. I did that, but didn’t hear any sounds while dragging 
up or down, but I did find that the Favorite on which I double tapped and held, 
did move. I did this twice, on different stations, and was able to reorder the 
stations within my Favorites, Unfortunately, though there was no audible 
feedback to let me know how far I was moving the Station.

I think I found the steps to add a station after searching that should work.
I just searched for "acb radio mainstream" and under where it says stations, I 
double tapped on acb radio mainstream, the talk of the blind community.
The next screen has a "play enabled button" and a "favorite button." I double 
tapped on play, then favorite.
It went to the screen where it starts playing and you have the exit the now 
playing screen button in the upper left.
On this page, there is also a favorite button. I double tapped on it and then 
it turned into a "favorite on" button, I double tapped on that and it was then 
selected.
I stopped playback, exited that screen, and switched to my favorites screen, 
and ACB Radio Mainstream was the last favorite on that page.
Of course, it took far longer to describe these steps than it took doing it.
But it works.

My answer to you is that you do actively have to check for the presence of
voice mail, nothing is going to happen automatically which will bring it to
your attention.  You can ask Siri to "list new voice mail" when you get back
to your phone after a period where you were away or had it switched off, or
you can check the notifications by pulling down the notifications center (by
touching the statusbar at the top, then using the 3-finger swipe down
VoiceOver jesture), or you can look at the "phone" item in the "dock" at the
bottom of the home screen (if you have any voice mail it will show up
there).

If the smaller screen is prefered, then I would just go for the iphone 
SE, it was just released this year, so it's not outdated, that will

What is call visual voicemail does not show in less you have cellular data on. 
It will not show even if the tab is selected for voice messages.'s up you have 
to have cellular data on. So turn cellular data on hit on the voice tab the 
last one at the bottom row and while law you'll probably start to hear Boing 
Boing going in though all your old messages messages will start to appear.

@Sieghard; I was mentioning iOS meaning iPhone, iPod Touch or
iPad, it would probably work on all iOS devices.
@Mary; I like the stock app very much but there's gonna be a
large turnaround in iOS 10 with its interface so I'm looking for
alternatives. I used Aquamail on some Android devices and I like
its options, features and tones of settings for fine tuning its
operativity.
I agree Android approach to navigating and editing is harder to
handle than iOS but as you correctly said, it doesn't have to do
anything with the app itself. Regarding dictation, I'm getting far
better results with Google Speech Input or whatever is it called
in English than Siri Dictation, atleast for my native language.
I can manage multiple messages on both apps in pretty similar way
so I don't know did you played with Aquamail settins?

Does anyone know about some similar and VO accessible client? I really like Aquamail features and options and I'd like to have something like Aquamail for iOS.

I have my phone set to this specific VoiceOver setting, and have found
that it too can be inconsistent at times. Another option to allow
notifications but not be alerted by them is to mute the sounds from
the phone, and also do a 3 finger double tap on the screen. This will
mute speech. This way, you still get notifications but they aren't
spoken and no sound comes through. I use this a lot when taking a nap
or in a movie. I still get all my notices but only have to worry about
the vibrations coming through. This would be an option if you did not
want to turn Do Not Disturb on but you wanted to not be alerted by
voice or sound when getting a notification. Perhaps there is no one
perfect solution in this situation.

If it were me, I would use the old phone until you see the 7 and what
it has to offer. You could still get the SE at that point if you want

Given there's a choice, I'd borrow the 5C and wait.  Using upgrade and 
regretting it next month would be a bummer. You could still 
have an sE or the new equivalent, or even find it reduced in price once it 
wasn't a front line product.
don't think we ever had a phone at launch, though did have the iPqad Mini when 
it first came out.

Regarding the phone's battery, if you have jus the phone itself
without any extra battery cases, then the 6S Plus battery would last
longer. However, if you were to invest in a MofiJuice Pack (probably
misspelled but you know what I mean), or an Apple Smart Battery Case
for the 6S, then your battery life for the 6S will almost be that of
the 6S Plus. Once when I was not able to charge my 6S with the Smart
Battery case over night, the phone and extra case battery lasted me
about 30 hours before I got down to 30 percent or less. This of course
depends on what you do and what apps are open.

An Apple tv Qu4estion

Hello.  I just recently purchased the new Apple tv.  I remember when
it first came out last year and was being discussed here, some one
said there was an app on it that was for older movies or tv shows that
were in the public domaine.  Can any one tell me what the name of the
app is, or what I should search for?  My interest is classic tv and
movies and I am very interested in something like this.

Are there any suggestions out there for good pillow speakers for the iPhone
6S Plus?  I tried two different ones I found on Amazon, but the volume is
way too low to hear through the pillow.

Wayne, off hand, I don't know of an app that would do that, but, it could be 
done with total recorder on the computer.
The ootunes app allows you to record, but, to my knowledge, there is no way to 
set a timer on it.  I think that has be done manually.  I will be interested to 
know if you find an app to do this.

That is a one off in my opinion. I could be wrong, but given the fact that the 
SE came out what was it, spring? It's still selling well. If they come out with 
a new one now, with no good reason to do so,… Well, we'll see.

No, I agree with you there. Although, again that's personal preference. I'd 
either use my braille sense or a  stream for it, but if anything, I prefer 
books in text. Still, if we find out more about what the phone could be used 
for, we may be able to help more accurately.

Hi, it depends on what you use it for, though. I still have plenty of room on 
my 16 GB 5S, and that even has the beta, which, as we know, takes room to even  
install, but would rather not say too much. Still, if you don't keep pictures, 
videos, and music, you should be good.

If it were me, I would use the old phone until you see the 7 and what
it has to offer. You could still get the SE at that point if you want

I've read rumors that there will be a 32 GB option of the iPhone 7. We
will see in a few weeks when we know more, but that was one of many
rumors of the new iPhone. I hope they do though, since 16 GB is
extremely small. Good for those on a budget, but not much else.

This may also depend on whether you want the larger screen, more than 
likely, the iphone 7 will have a larger screen as the 6 and 6 plus do, 
not sure if Apple will have a newer SE version with the iphone 7 specs, 
so if you want the smaller screen, the iphone SE might be a good 
choice, should be interesting to see what Apple introduces though.

I have never used aqua male with a keyboard. The other thing I prefer about 
mail on iOS as opposed to android, and this really isn't specific to the mail 
itself, has to do with dictation and interacting with editible text in general. 
I like the fact that I can easily stop dictation in iOS. I like the fact that I 
get a tone telling me that dictation has stopped. I don't get that with 
android, except when doing Google voice searches. I also find it easier to get 
around in the text and make corrections. I realize that this is not specific to 
the mail client. And other people's experiences may differ. But that's my two 
cents.

I would agree with you there, Mary. Because there are a couple of

can't select and delete all at once and they have to go first to the 
delete bin, it's still more efficient and doesn't take long just to 
empty the trash now and again! 



It's one of those things where I really like doing email with the phone 
in my hand as there's so little movement involved, as opposed to having 
a keyboard; but I do keep the keyboard out in case I want to write a 
long message.

Here is another possible point in favor of getting the iPhone now rather than 
waiting. If you are the type who does not like to rush out and get the first 
version of a new OS that comes out, getting the phone now will mean that you 
can keep iOS 9 until you are satisfied that I OS X is going to work for you. If 
you don't care about that, or perhaps you've been using the beta or you know 
people who have, and they told you that it works great with voiceover, and this 
is not a consideration. Otherwise, getting the phone now will alleviate the 
need to jump right in when the new OS is first out.

Hi Gordon,
I don't think there is anything quite like aqua mail for iOS. But I am curious 
what you specifically like about it over what's available in the native iOS 
mail client. I have aqua mail on an android device, and I don't like it, 
principally because it's not as efficient to delete large quantities of mail. I 
shouldn't say I don't like it. It's a fine client. It just doesn't let me go 
through large volumes of mail as efficiently as the Apple client does. That's 
why am curious why you like it.

Were I you, given the situation as you have described it, this is to say, you 
have access to an interim phone to use until the release of iPhone 7, I would 
recommend that you wait until iPhone 7 is released before using your upgrade 
privileges.

App to schedule and record a radio show

Greetings. I am looking for an app to schedule and record a radio show
on a weekly basis. There is a show that I like to listen to overnight
but it is broadcast from midnight to 4am my time Friday mornings. Is
there an app I can schedule a weekly recording of this show? I have
TuneIn Radio and ooTunes but I don't know if either would do this or
how to set it up. I've tried to look for podcasts of the show but
can't find them. I'm probably not using the right keywords. Any ideas?
