Re: Walmart Black Friday deal

2024-06-17 Thread Vicky Collins
Well, here I am at this late date replying to my own message again, and I'm
replying on the web since I no longer have the original email I sent, so
who knows how it will turn out. But I learned some things that I didn't
realize along the way, so I figured I would just, hopefully, finally
complete this journey with the phones from Walmart and pass along my
experience as well.

Anyway, as I mentioned below in an earlier message, one of the iPhones I
purchased on the installment agreement was a 14 Plus. And the more I
thought about it over the few months while I was paying on the installment
agreement, I decided that since I had already gotten what I really wanted,
meaning the $500 Walmart E-gift card, that I would just give the 14 Plus to
my sister and think about getting myself another smaller iPhone. Thus,
since I had kept the installment agreement more than twice as long as the
two months I was required to keep it, and since the AT phone unlock
policy said in part: "Paid off early: The wireless number assigned to the
device must be active for at least 60 days," I thought I could just simply
pay off the installment agreement, wait for that payment to post, and then
request that AT unlock the phone.

Well, was I ever wrong! And to think I had already given my sister the
phone! For, when I went to the AT unlock portal and gave the phone IMEI
and the rest of my information, I was told that they couldn't unlock the
phone, saying something like they didn't recognize the IMEI as being on
their network. And seeing as the 14 Plus was still in its unsealed box when
I gave it to my sister, I guess that makes sense, even if I did kind of
assume that the IMEI would've already been associated with AT because of
the installment agreement for that 14 Plus that I had with them.

Now I didn't know what to do as I certainly didn't want to ask my sister
for the phone back and tell her that I would be happy to give it back to
her to use on Verizon after I had activated it and used it myself on AT
for a couple of months. So I finally decided to look around on the web and
see what I could find about getting the phone unlocked either by AT or a
third party. And while I was doing that, I thought to use one or two of the
IMEI check sites to see if they would confirm for me that the phone was
indeed locked to AT

When I ran a check on the IMEI, it told me, among other things: "Carrier:
US Reseller Flex Policy
Next Tether Policy: 4000."
And when I researched that further, it sure looked like to me that it was
saying that the phone was shipped to me from Walmart as unlocked, but it
was set such that it would lock to the first carrier in which a SIM card
was put. Although I didn't call AT since I was looking to take the phone
away from them, I did call both Walmart and Apple and asked if I gave them
the IMEI, could they confirm that the phone was indeed under this US
Reseller Flex Policy, but they each said they could not and I didn't press
the issue.

I next, although I wasn't quite ready to do so yet but wanted to try and
help my sister, got out my 15 Pro and set it up, although I didn't yet opt
to transfer my data plan from my 13 Mini to that phone. I then told my
sister I set up my phone without a problem and didn't have to change my
data plan or anything, so she then set up the 14 Plus, also electing not to
set up a data plan on it. It seemed kind of strange to me, though, as when
I then checked the IMEI of our respective phones that it showed they were
activated and even gave the start and end dates for the limited Apple
warranty, even though neither of us at that time had actually activated the
phone with a carrier.

Finally, though, since my data is only through my iPhones and I couldn't
update my 15 Pro via Personal Hotspot, I had to transfer my physical SIM
from my 13 Mini to an E-SIM on my 15 Pro, which was really easy and only
took a couple of minutes, and then I could update the 15 Pro to the latest
iOS version via the cellular data plan, although I then transferred my
E-SIM back to the 13 Mini as I'm not quite ready to make the switch to the
15 Pro quite yet. And then for the much bigger test, I told my sister how
easy it was for me to transfer my data plan to the new phone and suggested
she might want to try that as well, just to make sure I gave her a phone
that she could use in case something happened to her 13 Mini. And, sure
enough, she finally did transfer her SIM to the 14 Plus without a problem
and it activated on Verizon, even though I had purchased the phone as an
upgrade through AT for myself. And upon checking the IMEI status for that
14 Plus, it then showed: "Carrier: US Verizon Locked Activation Policy
Next Tether Policy: 2387
Country: United States
Sim-Lock: Locked."

I sure breathed a big sigh of relief that I hadn't given her a paper
weight, and I learned a whole lot along the way myself. And I hope this at
least made a little sense for you

I guess I should add that what I described below is what I am doing in
the privacy of my own home.

If I were out in public and making calls where I had to enter sensitive
information, then I would definitely make sure my screen curtain is on
and I would certainly be using earbuds or earphones of some sort.

HI Marilyn,
Try this:
1. Tap Settings > Privacy.
2. Tap Default message timer.
3. Select 24 hours, 7 days, 90 days, or Off.
4. If you want to apply the timer to existing chats, tap "by selecting them"
and then tap the chats.

Turn on disappearing messages in a specific chat Anyone can turn on
disappearing messages in an individual chat. Once turned on, new messages in
the chat
will disappear after the duration you select.
1. Open a chat.
2. Tap the contact’s name.
3. Tap Disappearing messages.
• If prompted, tap Continue.
4. Select 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days under Message timer.

Hope that helps!

Hi there. Inside a chat, go to the very top where it says image. Tap on it, and
then go down to disappearing messages. Tap on it in set it to turn it off. That
will turn off your disappearing messages. If you want to change the setting

To my understanding, you have to do it individually on each message. I am not
aware of a general setting for all the chats. This doesn’t mean that there’s
not one, I just have not seen it. Like I said, if you tap on the image or the
persons name participating on the chat, You can get to the setting by swiping
all the way down to the disappearing messages and then turn it off.

RE: Screen recognition

2024-06-17 Thread paekstrand
Hi , yes , I understood that. I was just surprised that with screen
recognition on in that app, it just looked normal to me, which was not what
someone else was reporting.

Does anyone know under what circumstances screen recognition works well? In
the pool controller app we are trying to assess, without screen recognition,
the app pretty much says nothing with voiceover. It doesn’t announce the word
“button” or anything.

Thanks,

Pam

I suggested you turn screen recognition on for the BARD Mobile App just to see
what it looks like. It is nonsense to actually use if with the BARD Mobile App

might look like with an inaccessible app. I’d just forget I ever brought that

I was trying to experiment with it to see if it might work with the Omnilogic

Hello Ignacio,
Thanks for your suggestions. I have followed your steps, but am having no
success. Are there other headings I should be looking for? Also, is this
something I need to do for each message? I would like the setting to apply to
all messages so I don't have to deal with them individually.
Thanks.

Hi there. Inside a chat, go to the very top where it says image. Tap on it, and
then go down to disappearing messages. Tap on it in set it to turn it off. That
will turn off your disappearing messages. If you want to change the setting
again, do the same thing. I hope this helps. Have a nice day.

After I expand the thread, I swipe down to the first message and let VoiceOver speak the message without actually opening the message which I only do if the message is too long to be spoken by my preview setting.   I don’t have previews turned on. Also, I never expand the thread and swipe down to the first message as you described. I just double-tap on the thread and, it it’s a brand-new thread, I assume that I’ll land in message 1,  read it and go on from there. Perhaps I should start using your method.

I would recommend the TP Link, make sure you get the ones which have Matter
support. Nobody should buy any smart home device these days unless it has
Matter support. I for one refuse to do so and if I want something in particular
which does not have it, I probably would rather wait until that happens. I also
usually try to nake sure that all 3 voice platforms are s upport, Alexa, Google
and Apple Homekit/Siri.

Best regards,
Sieghard

2024-06-17 Thread Richard Turner
I often use Alan’s method. But I also use your method and don’t have the issue
of focus jumping off message 1, etc.

However, the expand thread message then treats each email as a separate email
so if you want to reply and not quote all the messages, the one you reply to
will be the one quoted below yours…

But you don't say anything about expanding the thread which is what I first do.
After I expand the thread, I swipe down to the first message and let VoiceOver

I don’t have previews turned on. Also, I never expand the thread and swipe down

But Charles was recommending to folks they turn on Screen Recognition in BARD

best.

So, I was responding to Charles. No one should ever touch screen recognition

Richard,

I suspect since BARD Mobile is already accessible with VoiceOver in its native
form, those results you're getting are the very reason we recommend that screen
recognition not be left on unless one is positive that it benefits the app in
question. You can get very unreliable results with screen recognition turned on
in an app not needing it.

Screen recognition was also useful when the new SiriusXM app was released. It

Since my Arboleaf app now works so well, in the VoiceOver Recognition settings,
under Screen Recognition, there is a place to select apps for which you want
screen recognition to turn on automatically when you open that app.

I added Arboleaf to that list, so this morning, when I launched Arboleaf,
screen recognition turned on automatically. When I exited the app, screen
recognition turned off.

A very nice feature.

Just to echo Richard's point, screen recognition should definitely be in your
rotor because apps are being updated continuously and in my experience,
developers are using more graphical objects in their apps. If you're noticing
an app that used to work and now VoiceOver doesn't seem to be speaking much of
anything, try using the rotor to turn on screen recognition for that app to see
if you get different results. I seldom leave it turned on for an app when doing
this but I expect you'll develop a routine that works best for you.

RE: A Quick Question about iOS Photos and a Follow-up

2024-06-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I don't think these captions you enter are read automatically by Voiceover.

From: VIPhone

Subject: A Quick Question about iOS Photos and a Follow-up

Hello Everyone,

I hope your summer is off to a good start, although, now that I think about it,
summer doesn’t officially begin until later this month (smile).

After all these years, I finally decided to start using iCloud Photos. Until
now, I have been keeping my photos on my beloved Windows PC but, as I take more
and more photos, the iCloud photos option began looking more attractive.

On my iPhone 14, I open a photo in the photos app. In the details area, I
enter a caption, such as, “Mark’s Crystal Ball.”

My quick question: Isn’t Voice Over supposed to read the caption of that photo
when I land on it as I browse through my photos in any given view? If so,
please tell me what Voice Over configuration I should use.

As to the follow-up:
I received my new walking pad. I absolutely love, love, love it and think it
will be a perfect device for anyone who is blind or low vision because (1) it
has tactile button controls, (2) it has easily retractable handrails, and (3)
it comes completely already assembled, out of the box. But I want to wait a
few days, just to put it through it paces before posting about it, on-list.

Okay, I think that’s about it for now.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Alan made me think of another point to make.

It works perfectly with screen recognition, in fact, it reads much better. The
information it gathers like your BMI reads on one line now instead of having to
flick to the next line, etc.

In many cases, turning it on makes an app next to useless, but when it works,
it works great.
This is why one should put it in their rotor and try it on apps that are not
reading well but leave it off for most apps.

I have the 13 Pro and with iOS 17 dot something it changed what is spoken when
you mute or unmute the phone with the switch.
Since the 15 replaced the switch with a button, are you sure you are not
pressing the top most button?
Or, is nothing playing when you press a volume control so it is telling you the
current state?
Just guessing since I have not touched the 15.

2024-06-17 Thread Richard Turner
Yes I know that.

But Charles was recommending to folks they turn on Screen Recognition in BARD
to see how a sighted person sees the screen, which in my test, is nonsense at
best.

So, I was responding to Charles. No one should ever touch screen recognition
unless they cannot access an app normally.

If you're noticing an app that used to work and now VoiceOver doesn't seem to be speaking much of anything, try using the rotor to turn on screen recognition for that app to see if you get different results. I seldom leave it turned on for an app when doing this but I expect you'll develop a routine that works best for you.  Alan Lemly Sent from my iPhone On Jun 16, 2024, at 10:14 AM, Richard Turner wrote:I have a scale that I weigh myself on that is Wi-Fi made by Arboleaf.  Their app became very difficult to use after a recent update.I decided to try Screen Recognition in their app; which has the same name, Arboleaf. It works perfectly with screen recognition, in fact, it reads much better.  The information it gathers like your BMI reads on one line now instead of having to flick to the next line, etc. In many cases, turning it on makes an app next to useless, but when it works, it works great. This is why one should put it in their rotor and try it on apps that are not reading well but leave it off for most apps. HTH,  Richard, USA"It's no great honor to be blind, but it's more than a nuisance and less than a disaster. Hi there. Inside a chat, go to the very top where it says image. Tap on it, and
then go down to disappearing messages. Tap on it in set it to turn it off. That
will turn off your disappearing messages. If you want to change the setting
again, do the same thing. I hope this helps. Have a nice day.

Hello everyone,
Previously in Whatsapp I would hear "voice message from xxx plus the number."
Now I am hearing the name and "new messages will disappear from this chat 7
days after they are sent except when they are kept." I did not change any
settings, so don't know why or how this new setting has been activated. I want
it to be that I don't hear that disappearing information and where I am the one
to delete the message or it will stay there. I have gone into settings, storage
and data, manage storage, but then don't find a heading to change the setting
to stop the disappearing.
Please give me some step by step guidance here. Many thanks.
