Syncing phone with PC without overwriting phone's contacts

2014-01-07 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
Is there a way to transfer phone contacts back to Outlook on the PC? I've
lost three recently created contact groups on my computer and will need to
set up a sync relationship with the re-formatted computer- but don't want to
lose our phones separate contact lists during the sync. Thanks for any info.

Did IOS7.04 fix "Screen Lock" repetition?

2013-12-05 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
I really would like to know- and here's a cool song that's worth the listen:

Have you been irritated lately by the repeated 'Screen locked' messages in
iOS 7? Well, you aren't alone, and here's a song about it:

RE: Pages change too quickly when moving apps

On my 5C you don't even have time to raise your finger before it zips- all
the way to the end of the range. Will try the dock method instead.

Back in iOS 3 and 4, page change when moving apps was very quick. In iOS 5,
Apple slowed it down too much. Now, Apple sped page change up again, but has
added spoken announcement of each page before changing to the next page. If
you lift your finger when you hear the page you want, the app will stop on
that page. That said, some people find it easier to move the app into the
doc, change to the page they want the app on, and move the app out of the
dock onto the new page.

I've restored from encrypted backups, and text messages and phone logs were
restored. I've also read on line that all backups, encrypted or not, contain
the same information, but I only have experience restoring encrypted backups
myself.

You can't do an update over Facetime. If you're referring to what I said
below then I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. I was referring to the fact that
the major bug fixed in IOS 7.0.4 was for some Facetime problem people were
having. If you're not seeing these problems yourself then there's no
pressing need to run out and get the 7.0.4 update, at least IMHO.

Sure Christopher. Only, my partner updated over the air using a weak wifi
signal, and her iDevice started having some interesting problems. When she
finally hooked up to iTunes and did a full repair, the problems went away.
Explain that however you choose. As for me, I will only update over wifi
when I have a consistently strong signal.

I'm sure Apple has enough checks that it won't start an update until it
knows it has a good image downloaded to your phone. Finally, unless Facetime
isn't working for you, you can just wait until you have access to your PC or
a more reliable wifi network.

Hi Cher,

If your phone is vertically in John's neck holder with the screen facing
your body and the home button up the compass should work correctly. I own
this neck holder as well and it works fine.

The clock directions are backwards (I.E. when it should say 1 O'clock, it
says 7 o'clock) while using John Adam's neck strap with screen side toward
me, and home button at top. Does MYWay work if you have a strap which holds
the phone in the upright position instead, or does the phone simply have to
be horizontal to work? For this trial run, I turned off the horizontal lock
toggle thinking that this would fre up the phone's directional signals or
whatever. What settings or strap is needed to make this work? Thanks.

RE: Dialing extensions on IPhone

2013-08-21 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
If you want to put them in your contacts, just write in the switchboard
number, then put a comma and then fill in the extension numbers. The pause
created by the comma gives the switchboard time to pick up, and then the
extension will dial itself automatically.

Hi.

It sounds like you've got your volume buttons set to change the volume of
the ringer and alerts. You can change this by going into settings, then
sounds, and telling the phone to not use the volume buttons to adjust the
ringer/alert volume. there's an adjustable slider there where you can set
the volume of the ringer. Once you set this level, it will stay the same
once you've set the phone to not change the volume using the volume buttons.

All other volumes like the volume of music/streaming can be adjusted using
the volume buttons.

It's a two finger swipe down to read from where you're currently at to the
end. The two finger swipe up reads from your current point to the top of
the screen.

Dear Todd-

Thanks for writing, but am not sure you understood my note. IMO there is NO
problem with the current release of the program. Choosing the All Button
brought up only appropriate food choices with the sole exception of the JC

color identifier apps- was RE: Talking Goggles

2013-08-09 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
I have had some pretty amazing color results with Tap Tap See- i.e. it
correctly identified "lavender wall" and "purple, gray, and blue top". That
last identification helped me wear my gray shorts with the top instead of
bone or white- which was pretty great. I was also quite impressed with the
correct lavender call. It also identified an oak picture frame as "wood"
which meant it detected the color quite clearly.

Speaking of color identifier apps, can anyone recommend a good one? I've
bought ISpectrum and ColorId. Originally ColorId was way too much
information with so many obscure color names. They did improve it by
allowing a more restricted color palette but I still find it hard to use.
 Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello,
I just used Talking Goggle this morning on a bottle of coffee creamer. I
have 2 that are the same size and from the same company. I played around
with the lighting and where in the general area I thought the flavor would
be printed. With some persistence, I finally found it. Hence, I was able to
open up the correct bottle. As cara had recently pointed out in a previous
email, lighting plays a tremendous role in how successful one will be with
Talking Goggles or any other app that relies on lighting for excellent
results, such as OCR and color ID apps.

RE: Camera Face Finder- is there an on/off toggle?

2013-08-07 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
Actually it did work quite well the first day I tried it- perhaps because my
cat has a white face and large eyes- pretty human like. I am not sure why it
was not responding on the second attempt- but probably operator trouble :(
BTW, several photos of my cat turned out well and one is outstanding and is
now my wallpaper. Thanks for providing this info- I will keep it in mind
when it doesn't seem to be working as I expect.

If you were trying to take a picture of your cat then Face Recognition will
not work, it only works on human faces at this point.

RE: Problem with All Access Latest 2.2 Version

2013-08-05 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
Dear Todd- It seemed that the 'All' button did just bring up restaurants
within a 3 mile radius- tons of which I did not even know of. I did not see
any businesses but will re-check. The choice of 3, 10 or 30 miles seemed
pretty clear to me- not understanding that confusion. I love your app and
will give it a vote ASAP.

Alan,

As we discussed privately, I was able to plug in your address, expand my
radius, and find the results you were looking for.

I don't think you were able to set your radius correctly. I will submit an
update that displays the current radius at the top.

Another common source of confusion is the 'All' button. It means all, as in
all businesses. So it is not an error to find a business without a menu.
It could be a hair salon. If you want to narrow the results to specific
types of restaurants, try the Search by Category or Cuisine mode.

If you find a restaurant without a menu, then we need your help. If it's a
restaurant you visit often, consider asking the manager to provide their
info using www.Locu.com. It is free and Locu can retrieve their menu from
the restaurant's website, a word document, or even a hardcopy menu! There's
no charge for the app and no charge for a restaurant to be included. Since
Yelp and GoDaddy use Locu, it's a worthwhile effort.

Mike Arrego did a recent podcast in wich he used Blind Square in conjunction
with commercial GPS apps. I'm sorry but I don't recall specifically which
podcast. In that podcast, there was a periodic announcement of the amount of
distance Mike had walked. Whether this was a function of Blind Square or
some other GPS App is something I don't know. But I am writing to inquire
whether Blind Square has such a function. I have given the docs a cursory
examination but haven't seen it although I certainly may have missed it. If
Blind Square can maintain and periodically anounce an aggregate total of the
distance walked, please explain to me just what to do to enable this
feature. Thanks.

Hi

The button to the left of 3D view, down left corner, double tap once is
heading, double tap once more(the second time), you get heading with
directions. This mean it will tell you where you go as you go in live
information, but no turn by turn information. If you turn left into unknown
streets, no voice will tell you that you are outside of a planned route.
Maps will just announce the name of the streets.

Maybe in IOS 7

Accessibility gone with latest update to Redlaser?

2013-08-01 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
Found limited info but not seeing the buttons described. Instruction to tap
the button with the lightning bolt and I don't see that or a Scan button.
Has the app lost whatever VO accessibility it once had?

Redlaser Settings & where is the Scan button?

Can't locate the scan button.

And what is the purpose and use of the Multi-scan option?

And what does "Tap the barcode to focus" mean?

Sorry for the multiple questions- only having very intermittent internet

With all this talk about location services and taptapsee I decided to check
mine out only to discover that taptapsee isn't in the list of services. Any
idea as to why and what, if anything, I can or should do about it?

Thanks,

RE: Location Services with Tap Tap See- where did you find them?

2013-07-05 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
Since you have Siri in your list of apps, we must be seeing the difference
between a 4 and a 4s or 5. All the apps are listed alphabetically and mine
jumps from Red Laser to W&Y Pages- absolutely no Tap Tap See there. :(

Thanks for the note on Camera and Photos- I've turned those two off. :)

Hi,

The path that I stated before should lead you to Location Services. No you
shouldn't have to have the app Tap Tap See open to find Location Services
for the app. Yes, Red Laser and All Access need Location Services turned on,
so that you are able to gather info from your general area. Photos and
camera doesn't necessarily need Location Services turned on. All this does
if Location Services are turned on for Photos and camera is to stamp your
coordinance on the photos info. If this info is presented to the general
public and if the photo happends to have been taken in or around your house,
your address can be obtained.

Here is the instructions to get you to Location Services once again..

>From the "Home" screen of your device Go To

Settings and double tap to open.

Swipe down to "Privacy"

Swipe to "Location Services" this should be the first in the list. You
should hear Voiceover read "Location Services ON -Button-

Double tap to open Location Services and then Swipe down until you hear Tap
Tap See.

Double tap on Tap Tap See to turn on Location Services.

The list of apps will also include camera, photos, blogger, Safari, Seri,
All Access, Red Laser, Maps, and any other apps that you may be using that
would require your location to give you the best possible info and results.

Not all of the apps listed will necessarily need Location Services turned
on. This will depend on how frequently you use the app. For example, I have
Location Services turned OFF for Seri, because I have disabled Seri because
I refuse to use the comedian! But I have Location Services turned ON for
TuneIn Radio, so that I am able to gather info on my local radio stations.

Donna

It's not there for me- I even launched the app to see if that would cause it
to show up, but IT'S still not there. Should it be there regardless of
whether location services were turned on during installing or licensing or
whatever?

I have a iPhone4, does that explain the difference in what you are seeing
and what is available on my phone?

Under a different path- General/Restrictions/Privacy- location services is
'dimmed'- but don't exactly know what that really means.

Under the location path you mentioned, I wonder if All Access, Camera,
Photos, and Red Laser really require location services?

Orientation is controlled by the tilt of the iPhone. Rotate your device
until it is vertical and orientation will switch back to portrait. If the
device is flat on a surface, you will need to lift one end.

RE: Fleksy?

2013-04-01 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
Swipe up with two fingers after typing to see the menus. You may find it
easier to change to horizontal layout for Fleksy- I can get about 6 fingers
on the phone that way which helps me a good bit. Don't give up- the first
few times I was quite bad- but with just a few tries Fleksy gets my word
almost every time- absolutely astonishing!

Hi,

I thought I'd try to use Fleksy again as when I tried it the first time I
just couldn't get the hang of it. However, I can't seem to find much in the
way of a tutorial or help in the app itself. Also, I vaguely remember that
there was a way to bring up a menu with options after you've typed a message
and i can't figure out how to do that either. Can someone give me some quick
answers if there are any?

Thanks!

Do a search for windows easy transfer. This program included with windows 7
can move all your data over, including your itunes stuff.
Install itunes after you have moved the stuff.

What, if I may ask, about the iPhone manual in the iBooks store? It's

Unlocking orientation (was) A Fleksy orientation question

2013-02-21 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
Got orientation unlocked! Finally found a reference in the manual but all it
said was to press home twice and swipe right on task bar- which does nothing
helpful. Found an old message in which a kind and brilliant person on this
list said to press home twice then swipe right with 3 fingers and voila!
Yeah! Thanks to the members of this list who have figured out this stuff

Hello Cher,

Fleksy supports both orientations. Here are some tips on how to type in
Landscape:

1. If your iPhone is locked in portrait, unlock it, start Fleksy and just
flip your phone landscape. Fleksy will follow along. The keyboard will
populate the bottom half of the screen and span the whole width.

2. If you iPhone is locked in portrait and you want to keep it that way, but
you still want to type in landscape with Fleksy: Head to the Settings app
and find Fleksy on the list. Choose the Lock Orientation option and select
Landscape Left or Landscape Right, according to your preference(Right or
Left refer to were the home button will be after the lock takes place).
Press the home button to exit the Settings and press the home button twice
to bring up the App Switcher. Find Fleksy and force quit it. Dismiss the App
Switcher and open Fleksy from your home screen. Fleksy will be in Landscape,
with the home button being to the right or left, according to your choice
before.

Give it a shot and let me know how it goes.

Hi, you can get the iPhone manual from Apple's site. You can also get it
from your iPhone directly using Safari. In any case it's definitely
accessible, and not a scaned PDF image. I forget the address on Apple's site
to get it, but a quick Google search will give you this information.

Good luck.

The built-in Maps app and Google's free map program let you enter addresses
and tell you how to get there. Navigon and Tomtom also do this.

Subject: Item Chooser, most underrated feature

Hi all,

I've decided, the the item chooser is one of the most underrated features of
the iPhone. Lol, maybe it is because I'm finally getting the hang of it,
and actually using it more often.

I'm loving it! In Safari, in some apps, in the music browser. I'm just
finding it so useful.

I like to go to a radio's website to look at there playlist. Well, it is
this ginormous table for the entire days tracks. The item chooser is
extremely helpful in this instance. I can just search for the hour I'm
interested in, then quickly hop to that time.

When I'm reading articles inside my rss app and I want to find the beginning
of the article, I use the item chooser to quickly get there.

:) Anyway, I just thought I'd mention this little yet cool part of the
accessibility in the iDevice.

Finding current location field in Apple Maps

2013-02-14 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
The current location field seems to usually be stuck somewhere in the middle
of all the nearby street names- and takes a minute to locate on my iPhone4.
Even after locating, it tends to lose focus after awhile and takes some
additional time to relocate after losing focus. Has anyone found a way to
eliminate the list of nearby streets, or to locate and/or maintain focus on
the current location field? The app is an invaluable help to us when trying
to find an unfamiliar location and I'm really excited about the potential of
this app.

Cher,

The Barnes & Noble Nook APP is very accessible. You will love it!

Establish an online account with Barnes & Noble first; purchase the book
(and/or books) you want; then download the Nook APP on your i-Phone. After
the APP has been installed, open it, use the ID and password you created
with your online account to sign in, and You're in business. The Nook APP
even provides a brief tutorial so you can familiarize yourself with the few
basics you'll need to know.

Have fun and happy Nooking.

New AFB App Helps People with Vision Loss Easily Take Notes on iPhoneR, iPadR, and iPod touchR

Subject: AccessNote Notetaker App Now Available in the App Store

New American Foundation for the Blind App Helps People with Vision Loss
Easily Take Notes on iPhoneR, iPadR, and iPod touchR

New York (February 1, 2013)-For the millions of Americans with vision loss
looking for a simple, convenient way to take notes at work, at school, or at

home, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) today launched the
AccessNoteT, a specialized notetaker for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

"Apple products have earned high points from us for their out-of-the-box
accessibility for users who are blind or visually impaired," said Carl R.
Augusto,

AFB president and CEO. "We designed this app to complement the iPhone's
other popular features, like web browsing and email, so that users who are
blind

have all the tools they need in one, handy device."

A traditional notetaker is a portable electronic device that enables users
who are blind or visually impaired to take notes, create documents, and
access

applications. These devices, extremely valuable for people who are blind or
visually impaired, usually provide either speech or braille output (or
both).

They retail for upwards of $2,000 and much more for those with a built-in
braille display; AFB's AccessNote app is available for $19.99.

In addition to being a low-cost alternative to traditional notetakers,
AccessNote allows users to combine efficient notetaking with many other
features

and functions of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This allows people who
are blind or visually impaired to use the same popular devices that their
sighted

peers are using in classroom or business settings.

This is the first notetaking app developed and designed specifically for
users with vision loss. AFB evaluated many of the other available notetaking
apps,

but found none to be very efficient or user-friendly to people who are blind
or visually impaired.

What sets the AccessNote apart includes:

. Seamless Navigation. Customized keyboard commands make notetaking more
intuitive and productive than ever before, including quick access to
important

features like Search All Notes, Search Within a Note, as well as several
navigation options.

. Automatic Saving. With an automatic save on every few keystrokes, notes
will never be lost.

. Cursor tracking. When navigating among multiple sets of notes, users can
always pick up right where they left off.

. Unparalleled Simplicity. With a clutter-free interface, users can create,
read, find, and sync, making it easier to spend more time with actual
content

and less time with tools.

. DropBox Integration. All notes, always on hand. DropBox keeps AccessNote
in sync with the user's desktop (and other devices) so their notes are
always

available and backed up.

. Compatibility with Bluetooth keyboards. AccessNote is optimized for
efficiency with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and for today's wireless braille
displays.

AccessNote was developed in conjunction with FloCo Apps and is available on
the App Store(sm).

there's nothing on the screen to identify anything. I tried this with the

Lawrence, the triple click of the home button to turn VO on or off is not
configured by default. You will find it in Settings general, Accessibility.
Here is an example of when I use them and how they are different.

When I am running on the treadmill I use the three-finger triple tap for
"speech off." That way I can listen to music without interruptions from
notifications that my phone normally reads; yet, VoiceOver is still
available to me if I double tap the back button or the phone rings and I
want to use the usual VoiceOver gestures I am accustomed to.

The other day I was with a sighted friend who forgot her cell phone and
asked to borrow mine. Without thinking I handed it to her and she was
bewildered because the standard gestures weren't working. I don't really
understand the difference between how a sighted person uses the iPhone and
how we do I just know it's different. So rather than explaining, I used
triple click home to turn VO off entirely;; then she was able to use the
phone in the way she knew.

Another advantage to the three-finger double tap is that it saves wear and
tear on the oft used home key. HTH

Apple Maps- Current Location Not Announced- what am I doing wrong?

2013-01-28 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
I'm apparently not doing something correctly using an iPhone4:

1) How do you 'select' current location in order to have it announced
as you walk? Have tried just flicking to it and also double tapping- which
opens the search box. Accidentally had it work briefly one time but can't
reproduce.

2) How do you keep announcements coming after the phone has locked the
screen?

Have read several posts and searched archives but still missing something.

RE: What was the fix for low phone volume after IOS6 upgrade?

2012-11-27 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
Thanks to you all, I think the volume is fixed. After adding volume to the
rotor (with your help) flicking up on the screen caused VO to announce
rising volume percentages- but the proximity sensor did not seem very much
improved. But then using the phone's volume up button did seem to make the
proximity sensor kick back in. Have not been able to use the phone as a
speaker phone since the update. Thanks to all of you terrific folks J

Here is what you need to click on or tap,

SETTINGS--GENERAL--ACCESSIBILITY--VOICEOVER--ROTOR. Make sure that volume
is checked by double tapping on it. Now, when you go to the rotor in any of
your applications, volume will be present. HTH.

Set your rotor to Voice-Over volume. Whilst on a phone call, use the
single-finger vertical flick up to increase VO volume. You may want to use a
two-finger flick up first to start VO reading the screen. After adjusting VO
volume with the vertical flick, and after VO finishes talking, press the
volume down button on the iPhone to lower the phone volume. If you have an
iPhone 4S, this may not work. Apparently, some 4S units cannot be adjusted
this way. There may well be a strange hardware component conflict issue with
those units.

It does help to lock orientation and it goes for all apps unless landscape
is needed. It will activate landscape if landscape is required.

Hi,

hand positioning isn't really that important. Place 3 fingers on the screen
and swipe right. That should do the trick. You should try putting your
device down on a flat surface until you get use to doing the gesture. If
you don't have orientation lock on, you should turn it on.

By "swipe" are you meaning across most of the width of the phone as opposed

I put my three fingers together, then put them vertically on the screen and
swipe across the smaller width of the phone.
Does that make sense?

Sorry if everyone already knows this, but it was new to me. If you're in the
Music app, and you double tap the home button, then you won't see the music
app in the App Switcher. You need to single tap it once to get back to the
home page and then double tap the home button to bring up the App Switcher.
You should then see the Music app, assuming it's still running.

You can't play videos in iTunes without QuickTime but it shouldn't affect
anything else. Sometimes iTunes doesn't even install QuickTime on a PC,
though I'm not sure what criteria it uses for determining whether or not to
install it.

RE: Problem with list archives in Google Groups

I'll answer my own question- Yes, it worked to paste the list archive page
in the address bar after signing into GMail. Yeah!

So after you sign into Gmail, can you put the list address in the address
bar and still be in html when you land in Google Groups?

The new GG page has those links that JAWS does not detect as links and even
when I routed JAWS to them and clicked, I could never tell if I made any
lasting changes. Even when I eventually succeeded in bringing up a "revert
to old GG" link, it seemed to be unresponsive to any keystroke combination I
tried. And when the "Settings Button" finally drifted through the fog, it
did not respond like a normal button either. When I finally got the Settings
menu to drop down, I changed that setting but it has reverted to the New GG
again today. When that message is flashing, it seems to take focus away from
anything else. What a royal pain!

I'm the one who posted this topic, and even though I'm using IE8, the
message said that my browser was out of date and unsupported; and that I
would have to convert to Chrome in the future- but because they're such nice

Warning message when syncing iBook

2012-09-28 Thread Don & Cher Bosch
I downloaded the IOS 6 iBook to my PC yesterday- but could not find it on
the iPhone after syncing. When I attempted to manually sync the 'books'
category in iTunes, there came a warning that if I continued I would lose
everything my old library and only have the new one. I have tons of music in
the library, so cancelled the sync.

What does this warning mean in real terms? And where are iBooks stored on
the iPhone? Thanks to all you brave people who have forged ahead (this is my
first iBook). Your help is invaluable J

Hi,

The trick when trying to balance speakerphone volume and VO volume is to
make sure you have added Volume the rotor. Now when you are in a call, take
the phone away from your ear so that the call switches to Speakerphone. If
the call volume is louder than necessary, lower it with the volume buttons
on the side of the phone. You have to make sure of course that you didn't
disable this feature in "Settings" and "Sounds". Now when the call volume is
comfortable and VO is still not loud enough, bring your phone as close as
possible without engaging the proximity sensor. Now flick the rotor to
volume and then flick up with one finger and this will increase the volume
for Voiceover relative to the call volume. If you put this all the way to
between 90% and 100% and I guess if you are not also hard of hearing, you
should hear Voiceover just fine.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi Stacey,

this is interesting. Do you mean that you can slide the volume of a phone
call low enough to hear what voice-over is saying?

I've tried activating and deactivating the side buttons in sound settings,
but it didn't change anything to my problem.

I wonder what can be different between your settings and mine.

Hi Don, actually, there may well be a way to do this depending upon your
carrier, but it's a little technical. I was writing a bunch of instructions
for you to try, but really, the below article from Lifehacker summarizes
things nicely. If you're not in the U.S. but use a GSM carrier, try the
instructions for AT&T. It involves typing in a code to change the call
forward if not answered settings, which is how voicemail is often controlled
on GSM carriers. If it messes things up and doesn't allow people to leave
messages anymore, you should be able to deactivate the custom forwarding you
set up by dialing #61#. At that point, your voicemail should begin working
again. Here's the article in question.
http://lifehacker.com/5878635/change-how-long-your-phone-rings-before-sendin
g-calls-to-voicemail

Let us know if you try it and get it working.

Cheers,

Grant

I think others have suggested this previously. Are there instructions

If you install directly on the phone, do the updates and apps get installed

Jenn-

Are you starting with the focus on the iPhone in the treeview? When I start
from there and tab, I'm not getting that info- just some fields that say
'read only' which JAWS cannot read. I'm having to use the JAWS cursor to
look over that cluttered multi-column layout screen.

I also notice that the screen always stops reporting with time remaining on
the progress or saying 'step x of x' instead of saying 100% or anything I
can recognize as complete. Sometimes I see a '?Done' button, but nothing
seems consistent from one time to the next. I'm having more issues now than
last year, and am not sure why.

I use jaws 13 also. What I do is find the volume button by tabbing around,
then I tab a couple more times, and it will say downloading one item or two
items. Tab again, and I can find out how long it takes to download. After
that, I sync it to the phone, and it installs.
