lol. I didn't even know there were list archives! I stay away from the google groups web site as much as possible and rarely read mail on this list due to the high traffic. package tracking app?
Hi everyone, One of my favorite apps has been Track This, an easy to use voice over friendly package tracking app. I hadn't used it in a while, but I have some things coming via FedEx and when I went to enter the info in the app today, I got a message saying that Track This is closed and is no longer accepting info. Maybe this is old news but I didn't know till today. so, can anyone recommend another accessible package tracking app? That was one of the most useful apps I ever had. RE: updating my iOS
I do all the windows updates, but as an example, I bought a new laptop six months ago, and I stuck with windows 7, because I'm not willing to try 8 until it's been out a good long while and I get feedback from sighted and blind users. So, I feel the same about my phone, not wanting to upgrade the IOs for a while, till I see how well it does. Once that is done, do the following, not all of it might help, but nothing will hurt: 1. Make sure your phone is plugged in to power even if the battery is fairly full this is not a bad idea. 2. Turn off Bluetooth if it's on 3. Bring up the app switcher and close all apps. 4. Go into Settings, General, Reset, double tap Reset Network Settings and confirm. This will reboot your phone, you will have to reconnect to your WiFi including reentering your WiFi password. If you don't want to do that, at least power off the phone after you empty the app switcher, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. 5. Go into Settings, General, Software Update and double tap Install, agree to the licence terms and then put your phone down and forget about it for an hour or so. If the update has already downloaded it may not take that long and of course if you are right there and you hear Voiceover come on it's OK, but don't panic if it doesn't come on for a long time. Alternatively you could of course connect your iPhone to your computer and do the update by clicking the "Check for updates" button in iTunes. If you decide to upgrade via iTunes which will give you more feedback, make sure you are using the latest version which is 11.1.2, this actually seems to have just come out. I wanted to check the exact version for you and when I opened iTunes it came up and told me that 11.1.2 was available and did I want to download it. I was thinking of power cycling it, but honestly, I've never once turned it off since I got it. with my 3GS it was such a pain because I never knew how long to hold the power button to be sure it was powering back on, since there was no audio feedback or vibration or anything to know it was booting up. So is there a reset I can try? or if I should power it off and back on, approximately how long should I hold the power button and how long till the phones boots up? RE: Justification for using Kindle vs. downloading from Bookshare
I was actually about to say that. Other than the fact that Kindle has so very many more books than bookshare, and books old and new, I also like to support the authors, many of whom are independent self-published. And oddly enough, I find the amazon kindle web site much easier to navigate and more straight forward than bookshare site. That's using my windows computer for searching and buying/downloading books from either site. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Chuck Dean Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2013 11:39 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Justification for using Kindle vs. downloading from Bookshare I think what you are experiencing, is in some books the first letter of the chapter is artsy, or calligraphy. This is an image that voiceover cannot pick up. This is true on many Kindle books. On books like this, when I would scan them for book share, I would have to go back and change the first letter of every single chapter. Very labor-intensive. So, it probably isn't a defect and Kindle, rather a flaw with voice overs ability to read everything. I still enjoy Kindle books. As far as the original question, sometimes I buy Kindle books because I want to support the authors efforts. Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores. Hi all, I thought I had a guitar tuning app on my old 3gs phone, but it's not on my iPhone 5. I can't remember the name of the app anymore. I've recently starting playing guitar again after about thirty years and I'd like to find an accessible and a accurate guitar tuner. Any suggestions? Bible apps
Hi all, I'm looking for a Bible app for my iPhone 5. I want to do a Bible study, and it involves reading lots of diverse verses in many different books. I have a braille bible, but honestly, it's sometimes overwhelming having to pile volume upon volume around me to get one verse. So, I thought with the iPhone and my braille display, maybe it would be easier. What I want is an app that is searchable, so I could enter the coordinates for the verse I need to look up, using my focus 14, and then be able to read the verse as well, easily going back to the search for the next one. Thanks for any suggestions. I also look on wikipedia for answers about movies and actors and things. I was so disappointed when the "classic movies" level was all about aliens and horror movies. a pretty basic question about moving apps
Hi all, I have an iPhone 5. I'd like to do a couple things. Move apps I most use or of a similar type to various folders. I'd also like, if possible, to change things that are on the dock. I don't use email on my phone or safari or music. I only have a 16 gig phone and way too much music for that. So, I'd like to keep phone ont he dock but move three of my favorite apps there instead. Is it possible to do all this with a braille display? And if so, can someone give me directions or point me to a tutorial on the process? Thanks. Sherry So hold this moment fast, And live and love as hard as you know how, And make this moment last, Because the best of times is now. --La cage aux Folles -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group. RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones
Thanks. They are the right file type with the right extension. I'm not on that computer right now but I will look for them tonight and get them in the right folder and see what happens. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2013 11:53 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones Sherry, Are they M4R files? If so just copy them into the Automatically Add to iTunes folder, then open iTunes and they should be moved to the Tones or Ringtones folder. Both the Automatically Add to iTunes and the Tones or Ringtones folder are in your iTunes Media folder which in turn is in a folder just called "iTunes" and if you did the default installation, it is in your Music folder. Once you have done this, you have to connect your phone, check the Tones button under "Devices" then tab and make sure you check "Sync All Ringtones". This process is no different than syncing apps or music, either select to sync all tones or if you choose to only sync selected tones you have to tap into the listview where all your tones are and check those you want, then sync. If your files are not in the iTunes format and do not have the M4R extension they will not work. If you can't get this to work you can contact me off-list and I'll see if I can help. I am not saying it's easier in Windows, but I posted my instructions quite a few times now and send them directly to a few more people and I believe they were all able to follow them and create ringtones. Yes, there are about 8 or 10 steps involved depending on how I word it and also on how technically experienced somebody is. However, if you do get it to work and do it a few times, it takes little more than a minute or 2 to create a ringtone. The most time is spend on setting the start and end point if you hav a song where you don't want to start at the beginning and simply set the end point to 38 or 40 seconds because if you want to start a few seconds in and stop at a point that makes sense you have to set your start and end point, listen to the selected part of the song, then fine tune your start and end points where you listen each time after you do so. Obviously if you do this 3, 4 or 5 times you can easily spend 3 to 5 minutes doing that. After that it takes another 30 seconds to create the ringtone, rename the file, copy it into your ringtones folder and play it so it gets added to the library. The basic steps are really only that: 1. Select the part of the song you want by setting the start end end point in the Options tab in "Get Info". 2. Right click on the song and select "Create AAC Version. 3. Go to the newly created ringtone, select "Show in Windows Explorer", then rename it so it has an M4R instead of an M4A extension. 4. Now select copy or Move and paste it into the Tones folder which is in the iTunes Media folder. 5. Press enter on it to play it which automatically adds it to your Tones library, then sync it to your phone. If you want my more detailed description just write to me off-list and I'll send it to you. There is a big difference between a process you perceive to be difficult because it involves a lot of small yet relatively simple steps and one that really is difficult. Lastly, there are several apps out there which create the actual ringtone and which are accessible and being used by members of this list. However, you still have to email the ringtone to you or use iTunes file transfer to copy it from your phone into the Tones folder where you can play it and then sync it. Personally I don't necessarily find these apps any easier than using iTunes and really the only thing they don't require you to do is rename the file with the M4R extension. I either buy them, only a couple, or, send them from some package to myself, save the files in my downloads folder, then open and they seem to go where they belong but, I don't think I would ever venture in to how to actually creat one from iTunes. Why something should be so difficult seems strange to me. I just read the Fydora Outlier post and after reading it decided that I will never, ever make a ringtone from scratch. RE: portrait vs landscape on iPhone 5
thanks Sarah, I got both of those set now. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sarah Clark Sent: Saturday, May 04, 2013 6:12 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: portrait vs landscape on iPhone 5 Hi Sherry, I can answer your first 2 questions. I don't use a braille display, so I'm giving you the gestures on the phone. To lock portrait mode, go to the app switcher and do a 3 finger swipe to the right, which takes you to page 2 of the app switcher. The first option on this page is the rotation lock button that allows you to switch between unlocked and portrait lock. To turn on touch typing, you have to be in an edit fieled. Once you're in an edit field, typing mode will be one of the options in the roter. Just swipe down to select touch typing. portrait vs landscape on iPhone 5
Hi all, I just got my iPhone 5 yesterday and have spent much of the day learning the differences between it and my old 3gs and getting used to using braille. there are a few things I can't seem to figure out however. 1. How can I lock the phone in portrait mode, so it doesn't keep switching on me when I use apps like kindle? 2. How can I set the onscreen keyboard for touch typing? I was told to use the rotor, but neither with gestures or with my focus 14 display, can I get anything about typing. 3. For anyone using a focus 14, is there a keystroke on the display to activate the home button? Thanks everyone.
