Apple Releases iOS 15.6 and iPadOS 15.6, Bringing a Fix for a Braille Focus Issue in Mail
Apple Releases iOS 15.6 and iPadOS 15.6, Bringing a Fix for a Braille Focus Issue in Mail By AppleVis, 20 July, 2022 Apple has today released iOS 15.6 and iPadOS 15.6 to the public, both of which appear to focus on bug fixes and other under-the-hood improvements. Amongst the fixes is the following for Braille users: When editing an email in the Mail app using a braille display, after inserting a line break focus will no longer jump to the top of the screen. Additionally, iOS 15.6 introduces a new Web Rotor Summary setting located in Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Verbosity. The options available are: Speak Braille Do Nothing These options control what additional information VoiceOver will speak when switching to some of the navigation methods available from the VoiceOver Rotor in Safari. For instance, the Headings and Links options will speak the number of each of these that are on the current webpage when this option is set to “Speak.” If set to “Do Nothing” this information will not be spoken by VoiceOver. At the time of posting, we are unaware of any additional changes for blind and low vision users in these releases. However, as we always stress, we are a small team; and it is not possible for us to test all devices, configurations, or use cases. Thus, if you do observe any changes during your own use of iOS 15.6 or iPadOS 15.6, please do let us know your findings in the comments. Release Notes iOS 15.6 includes enhancements, bug fixes and security updates. TV app adds the option to restart a live sports game already in progress and pause, rewind, or fast-forward; Fixes an issue where Settings may continue to display that device storage is full even if it is available; Fixes an issue that may cause braille devices to slow down or stop responding when navigating text in Mail; Fixes an issue in Safari where a tab may revert to a previous page. Re: Focus issue
Try turning screen recognition off. Maybe that’ll work better. I didn’t realize my screen recognition was on for my messages and it went crazy. I turned it off and allh was good. Focus issue
Good morning. I seem to be having a focus issue on the new IOS 15 mainly when using screen recognition. Sometimes VO will say direct touch area and I have to turn VO off and on again to be able to navegate again. I was wondering if this is related to the new issue feature introduced on IOS 15? Regards. Focus issue: automated versus manual and locked screen?
focus is really becoming a game-changer! It allows me finally to use my IPhone as an all-in-one, but I’m having the following issue; am I doing something wrong, or is it a bug? The issue involves that when I activate the focus manually (and yes I’ve got it set up to activate within the Locked screen as well) when I launch it manually from Control Center, when the screen locks, no problem; none (except Whatsapp and Messenger) come in as I’d like it to. However when it’s automated, and the screen locks, all sorts of notifications come in! Does this happen to you guys too, so as to be some sort of a bug in 15.0 release? RE: The magic fix to the iOS 14 Voiceover focus issue and all else which plagued me
I guess I at one time turned it on and like you, turned the setting to off. I’ve still found an edit field or two where VO gets stuck, but nothing like before. Also, the text editing issues with dictation and the dictate bug also appear to be gone for me. For me at least this needs to be off and maybe that along with a complete reset of the phone and setting up as a new device also helped, but I have yet to find any place where Voiceover gets stuck or jumps around. Here is a bit of background: I bought an iphone 8 64 Gb two years ago and this year I did not participate in the iOS 14 public beta throughout the summer because I really needed my phone to work and could not take chances with strange issues. I finally upgraded about a week or two after iOS 14 was released in september and promptly regretted it when I experienced the many focus issues people were talking about. I then recently took advantage of a pretty good promotion my provider offered on the iPhone 11 which already had iOS 14 on it when I received it, but all the issues were the same. For one thing the Today View was broken, then there was the mildly annoying issue in the App Store where you had to swipe right twice if you want to install updates (the first time it seemed like Voiceover said "Update", but then focus would immediately jump back to the app description). And finally I was unable to share anything any longer unless it was by text or iMessage to one of the contacts which show up in the list of recently contacted people in the share sheet. As soon as I selected to share by Mail, WhatsApp or Facebook the following screen where the selected app would open was completely inaccessible with Voiceover typically stuck on Cancel or something like that. Finally I had an issue which most others did not seem to have and that had to do with something very annoying when typing on the on-screen keyboard in most edit fields. What would happen is this: Assume for example I open a message conversation and double tap on the edit field to reply to somebdy who sent me a text or iMessage (it did not matter which it was). As soon as I double tap on an iMessage conversation field Voiceover would say this: Message, text field is editing, iMessage, character mode, insertion point at start Now assume I want to start by typing "Hello", so I type the upper case H and I hear Voiceover say the following: Message, text field is editing, H, character mode, insertion point at end I now type the "e" of the word "Hello" and hear Voiceover say: Message, text field is editing, He, character mode, insertion point at end I type the first l of Hello and Voiceover says: Message, text field is editing, Hel, character mode, insertion point at end. Yes, I had them in 14.1 as well as in 14.2 public beta 4 which is what I tried after 14.1 brought no improvements for me. Of course I now know better and it was simply having this "Full keyboard access" turned on which caused me such problems. Sieghard: Did you update to iOS14.1 before you turned off the ‘allow full keyboard access’ setting? If you diod, did you still have the VO focus uissues then? (They’re a lot less in 14.1 in my experience than they were in 14.01.) From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Monday, October 26, 2020 12:13 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: The magic fix to the iOS 14 Voiceover focus issue and all else which plagued me Hi, So, finally I am again a happy camper although I probably did not even have to do the complete erase and reset on my iPhone 11 and then setting up as a new device which I just did a few days ago hoping it would help fix some of the issues I had. This continues with the second l and finally when I type the final o I hear: Message, text field is editing, Hello, character mode, insertion point at end Next I put in a space and it again repeats: Message, text field is editing, Hello, character mode, insertion point at end You can see the pattern, each time I typed a letter Voiceover repeated the entire message about "message, text field is editing, character mode and insertion point and in between it said everything I had so far typed. This happened in most search fields and other edit fields, one place where it does not happen and Voiceover behaves as it should is in the Mail app in the message body field. RE: Experience of others with iOS 13.5 and native Mail app lost focus issue?
Hi Davy, In fact I think it is completely appropriate that if somebody thinks they have noticed a bug or behaviour which seems to not be what it should to ask on the list first. The fact is that in quite a few cases something which appears to be a bug may not be one, I have seen so many instances where you have reported a so-called "major bug" or "deal breaker" and nobody else could reproduce it. I am not saying that there can't be issues which affect just a very few number of people or devices, that does happen in iOS as well as with Windows 10 PC's, but I have equally often seen people report what they thought was a bug and in the end a reboot of their device cleared up the strange behaviour or maybe something was changed which made people think it was a bug where in fact it was what Apple intended. Reporting issues which are known bugs to Apple is absolutely a good thing and I have myself encouraged people to do this and to do so in large numbers and not to rely on 3 active users to do this, but there is such a thing as the middle ground and going crazy in either direction is not always good. People can talk about an issue on this list and report it to Apple as well. As important as it is to report bugs to Apple, it's also good for the community to talk about bugs and learn from each other how to work around such bugs while waiting for Apple to address these bugs. It's also perfectly OK for people to get frustrated with Apple when a bug is reported and yet still hangs around without being addressed release after release. No. Bombing any server is a rotten idea. That is a very negative action and is likely not to receive a positive reaction. I hope that the moderator will not mind me saying this. But whenever I hear that someone wants to “bomb” a company, it sounds like spoiled brats wanting their way using any means necessary. Not casting personal attacks on anyone whatsoever. There are probably several useful methods that we can use to point out problems witha service or app. The one that comes to mind in this situation is to send a detailed description of the problem to the Apple Accessible team each time a new major update happens. It would probably be quite helpful to thank the team for any improvements that are made and point those improvements out. I’m just thinking

Hi Alan, Well, I’ve had no focus issues which is the reason I’m using Outlook at this point. I’d like to mail app but I really have grown very tired of the focus issues that have lasted for several months. I hope it works out for you when you try it. Hi Les, Thanks for the Outlook suggestion. I'm trying it now and it seems to be working very well. I just have to get used to its differing terminology. I like that the native Mail app references All mail when you want to see everything and Outlook uses Archive for its terminology the best I can tell. I'll know better how I like it when I try it first thing in the morning to review the messages in my Inbox to see how it handles focus. It seems to handle threads better but I haven’t decided if I like it better over all or not. -- Christopher (AKA CJ) Chaltain at Gmail From: 'Kimberly Samco' via VIPhone Sent: Thursday, May 21, 2020 12:41 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Experience of others with iOS 13.5 and native Mail app lost focus issue? Re: Experience of others with iOS 13.5 and native Mail app lost focus issue?
I don't use email threads, more than one email within an email, so I can't comment on this. I'm having no problems with voiceover losing focus with individual emails, as long as the annoying vertical scrollbar is at 0% for the top email & at 100% for the last email & if I'm within the middle of the email list, with the vertical scrollbar at the proper precentage corresponding to the email in focus. I'm using the native Apple mail appchecking my gmail & AT mail accounts. Hi Lynn, I agree. The only way to get things changed is to consistently ask politely. I've found that the old adage about catching more flies with honey than vinegar applies with anything where people are involved. I've sent my third email to Apple Accessibility about the native Mail focus issue and hopefully I'll hear something back. Re: Experience of others with iOS 13.5 and native Mail app lost focus issue?
Yes. This is irritating. I planned to ask this group about this but didn’t know the word for it which is “focus”, so thank you for that. So now what? Do we just wait for the next update? Write to Apple accessibility? Thanks for any direction. Experience of others with iOS 13.5 and native Mail app lost focus issue?
Hi List, I'm still disappointed that the native Mail app loses focus when I've reviewing emails with it in iOS 13.5. I have a gmail account and review emails in threads and the Mail app has been unable to retain focus on the message on which I'm located ever since iOS 13 came out. It doesn't seem to do any better with iOS 13.5 than it has with other iterations. If a new email comes in while focus is at the bottom of the screen on a much older message, focus is jumping to this new email. It also isn't keeping focus correctly when I expand a thread containing multiple messages. Are others still experiencing this behavior? Has anyone come up with procedures to work with this focus issue because I find going through my new emails each morning to be a major pain and time waster. Thanks in advance for your comments. RE: IOS Focus Issue
Yeah I get the same thing with my 6s+, Everytime I close an app it sends focus to the status bar, I've just gotten use to it and do a 2 finger swipe up to get rid of things. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Dan Rathburn Sent: Sunday, 3 January 2016 5:37 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: IOS Focus Issue Hello, I have a 6-Plus with the latest IOS update. Hello, As mentioned before, but I'll add it again, no issues on an iPad air 1, either. - Original Message - From: Mary Otten <motte...@gmail.com> To: viphone@googlegroups.com Date: Saturday, January 2, 2016 7:50 pm Subject: Re: IOS Focus Issue > > > My situation is like Chris's. RE: Explore by touch focus issue fixed in IOS 9
I found the same thing. Finally, delete is really delete. It also used to often skip the delete button if you were flicking right, it would go Mark message, Move, Reply, Compose and only when you went back to the left did you hear the delete button. Nice to have a little annoyance like that gone. I'm talking about the bug where I'd find a button by exploring the screen but double tapping would activate an adjacent button. For example, I'd go to delete a message in the Mail app by touching the screen right above the home button, where the delete button is located. Even though VoiceOver would say Delete, a double tap would pull up the reply dialog more often than not. This is fixed in IOS 9, so I have to retrain my muscles not to touch the screen above the home button and then immediately flick left and then right to make sure I"m on the delete button before double tapping. -- Christopher (CJ) chaltain at Gmail -- The following information is important for all members of the VIPhone list. IOS6: Critical and very annoying focus issue
Hi. I've just updated to IOS6. In Tweetlist, Voiceover loses focus when the screen is refreshing. That happens when opening websites in Tweetlist as well which makes reading websites nearly impossible. I haven't checked if that happens in Safari as well, but I find this bug seriusly critical!
