Re: Considering shrinking our data plan big time!
Raul, we can't do that with Verizon. The data is just shared between all the devices. I mistyped the amount in my last message. It's $10 more each month for the 2 gig rather than the 1 gig of data, not $40. Traci, If the finances are your concern, then I'd go for the shared plan. I'd check to be sure there aren't any extra charges before you do that though that might make it not worth sharing the plan. As other's mention, once you go to the shared plan, you won't be able to go to the unlimited data, if that's important to you. My boyfriend and I don't use more than one gig, but I've kept the 2 gig data plan because I'd rather pay the extra 40 dollars a month than be billed the extra 15 if I go over. As time goes buy, our data uses has risen, especially my boyfriend's. RE: Considering shrinking our data plan big time!
Hi, A way to shrink the plan by compressing data (which works very well for me here) is by using an app called Onavo Extend. Info is below. Jon "Onavo Extend is a Money-Saving, Must-Have App for EVERY iPhone Data User" - TechCrunch.com Save up to 80% on your iPhone/iPad data plan Traveling? Triple your data roaming plan Understand, plan, and manage your data usage See how much data each app uses iPhone 4S users on VERIZON, SPRINT and other CDMA networks: Onavo Extend is now for you as well! LTE iPads can run Onavo Extend now, too! -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Raul A. Gallegos Sent: Sunday, March 10, 2013 9:47 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Considering shrinking our data plan big time! Hello there. Let me introduce an opposite viewpoint to what some of the other messages have said on this thread. First off, I have never had unlimited data. When I started my AT&T account a couple years back it was one or two months after they stopped offering. Actually now that I think about it, I started my account in the summer of 2010. In any case, I had 2 GB for $25 monthly. I rarely went over 1 GB of data. There were times when my home Internet was down, or I used my phone to watch a lot more videos than normal. Usually I listen to a lot of online radio streams and Pandora. But even then, I did not go over one gig that much. All I am saying is that if you are comfortable with the amount of data that you have been using, like you pointed out at the beginning of this thread, then you should be okay in going with an unlimited minutes and text plan in order to share the data. I would do this even if it meant saving 20 or $30 per month. In my specific case it was two iPhones on the account, one with 2 GB of data and the other with three because of the new data plans. I had a non-smart phone for an additional $10 per month. These three phones were sharing a family plan of 700 minutes and unlimited text. When I decided to upgrade the third phone from a regular non-smart phone to an iPhone, I was going to have either 300 megs for $20 or three gigs for $30. However after doing the math, I would actually be saving money if I went with a 4 GB share plan with unlimited minutes. This would allow me to have the three iPhones on the account sharing 4 GB between the three. Additionally we would have the mobile tethering which we would no longer have to pay extra for. Even with this plan the three phones have yet to even go over 2 GB of data. So there is all this extra data that is not being used. Of course AT&T will let you rollover minutes, when you have a limited minute plan, but they will not let you roll over unused data. Of course not, that is there moneymaker. Since I am comfortable with the amount of data used on my plan every month, having unlimited minutes and unlimited text is a comfort. We can be on the phone all day and all night if we want and not worry about it. In theory you could say the same thing about your unlimited data now in terms of using your phone. However if you have looked back on your data usage, you know that unless something drastic changes, you will not use a lot of data. Obviously I cannot tell you what's going to be better for you, all I can say is what has worked out for me. I merely wanted to bring an opposite point of view since several other people have suggested they would rather keep the unlimited data. By the way, people who have unlimited data have that data throttled after using so much. The phone gets so slow that it is not really that much worth using it anyway. Re: Considering shrinking our data plan big time!
Hi there. I don't know if Verizon does this, but at least with AT&T and the mobile data share plan, you can turn off the data when someone exceeds what ever data you don't want them to go over. So if I have four phones on my plan and 4 GB of data per month, I would split it as one gigabyte per phone. That way if your teenagers use up there one gigabyte allotted amount watching Netflix and YouTube, then you can turn off their data so that you have some of your own. In fact what I have done is turned off the data for one or two days. It is truly amazing that when I was growing up I would get grounded from the TV for a week for certain things. Now I find that I'm telling my children they will be grounded from data for a week if they don't behave. The share plan is great for your cell carrier because you have a shared 1 GB etc between all your devices. If you have teenagers in that plan, they use all the data and when you need it, you find yourself buying another block of data. Even if you go over by so much as a meg, you get charged for another chunk. In my case, it's 2 GB chunks. Re: Considering shrinking our data plan big time!
The general consensus here seems to be keeping that unlimited data. Why do you all consider it so important, if you may not be a heavy data user? I should consider Starting a side discussion about DataMan & VZW. The app DataMan & VZW's count of my data, doesn't equal up. Yes, if you buy your phone for full price, you can keep your unlimited data plan through VZW or ATT. As far as mobile hotspot, VZW charges $20 per month for 2GB if you're like me and have unlimited data. When I called to ask about this, they tried like the devil to get me to switch to a shared plan saying that the advantage is that I'd have mobile hotspot included. But of course, mamma didn't raise no fool. I'll keep my unlimited data and pay full price for my phone. -Original Message- From: Steve Sent: Friday, March 08, 2013 3:31 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Considering shrinking our data plan big time! I think what she is asking is if you have unlimited data can you keep it if you purchase your phone outright with no upgrade, breaks, etc. If this is your question, I do believe you can do the same with AT&T. I could very well be wrong but the folks I've asked about it from both VZ & AT&T have told me that once you're in, you're in. I think the overall question I'd ask myself is this. Is the money I'd save really be worth giving up my unlimited data? If you were to happen to go over at some point, you'd really pay. So, to me it'd be worth just hanging on to the unlimited data if the cost difference was 20-30 bucks a month just to A, insure that I didn't go over & B. just to be able to have it if I wanted it or needed it on a trip, your main internet connection out, etc. Now then, if the cost savings were more than 30 bucks a month or money was really becoming an issue. I perhaps would consider moving towards the shared plan. - Original Message - From: Traci To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, March 07, 2013 17:33 Subject: Considering shrinking our data plan big time! Hi all, I need some data plan advice. Currently, we have 2 lines with VZW, mine is still unlimited data, the other line has just been downgraded to 2gb data, because of an upgrade. Well, to save some money, I'm considering revamping our plan, into one of those share everything plans. The share 1gb of data, unlimited talk/text. I did the account analysis over the last 6 Months, and if it is accurate, we seldom use 20mb of data each Month. January, for some reason, each line used 21mb of data. With this information, sharing 1gb shouldn't be a hardship. Any thoughts here? Am I crazy to give up my unlimited data? How about those of you that use your iPhone as gps? I'm guessing that takes up a lot of data. Lastly, doesn't VZW make it pretty easy to change our plan later on? Say if we decide to go up to the 2gb plan. Don't worry, I know I won't get the unlimited data back. :) Thanks for any guidance. If I am figuring this out correctly, it could be a $25 savings each Month.
