Raul, we can't do that with Verizon. The data is just shared between
all the devices. I mistyped the amount in my last message. It's $10
more each month for the 2 gig rather than the 1 gig of data, not $40.

Traci, If the finances are your concern, then I'd go for the shared
plan. I'd check to be sure there aren't any extra charges before you
do that though that might make it not worth sharing the plan.

As other's mention, once you go to the shared plan, you won't be able
to go to the unlimited data, if that's important to you.

My boyfriend and I don't use more than one gig, but I've kept the 2
gig data plan because I'd rather pay the extra 40 dollars a month than
be billed the extra 15 if I go over. As time goes buy, our data uses
has risen, especially my boyfriend's.

Hi,
A way to shrink the plan by compressing data (which works very well for me
here) is by using an app called Onavo Extend.

Info is below.

Save up to 80% on your iPhone/iPad data plan

Hello there. Let me introduce an opposite viewpoint to what some of the
other messages have said on this thread. First off, I have never had
unlimited data. When I started my AT&T account a couple years back it was
one or two months after they stopped offering. Actually now that I think
about it, I started my account in the summer of 2010. In any case, I had 2
GB for $25 monthly. I rarely went over 1 GB of data. There were times when
my home Internet was down, or I used my phone to watch a lot more videos
than normal. Usually I listen to a lot of online radio streams and Pandora.
But even then, I did not go over one gig that much. All I am saying is that
if you are comfortable with the amount of data that you have been using,
like you pointed out at the beginning of this thread, then you should be
okay in going with an unlimited minutes and text plan in order to share the
data. I would do this even if it meant saving 20 or $30 per month. In my
specific case it was two iPhones on the account, one with 2 GB of data and
the other with three because of the new data plans. I had a non-smart phone
for an additional $10 per month. These three phones were sharing a family
plan of 700 minutes and unlimited text. When I decided to upgrade the third
phone from a regular non-smart phone to an iPhone, I was going to have
either 300 megs for $20 or three gigs for $30. However after doing the math,
I would actually be saving money if I went with a 4 GB share plan with
unlimited minutes. This would allow me to have the three iPhones on the
account sharing 4 GB between the three. Additionally we would have the
mobile tethering which we would no longer have to pay extra for. Even with
this plan the three phones have yet to even go over 2 GB of data. So there
is all this extra data that is not being used. Of course AT&T will let you
rollover minutes, when you have a limited minute plan, but they will not let
you roll over unused data. Of course not, that is there moneymaker. Since I
am comfortable with the amount of data used on my plan every month, having
unlimited minutes and unlimited text is a comfort. We can be on the phone
all day and all night if we want and not worry about it. In theory you could
say the same thing about your unlimited data now in terms of using your
phone. However if you have looked back on your data usage, you know that
unless something drastic changes, you will not use a lot of data. Obviously
I cannot tell you what's going to be better for you, all I can say is what
has worked out for me. I merely wanted to bring an opposite point of view
since several other people have suggested they would rather keep the
unlimited data. By the way, people who have unlimited data have that data
throttled after using so much. The phone gets so slow that it is not really
that much worth using it anyway.

Hi there. I don't know if Verizon does this, but at least with AT&T and the
mobile data share plan, you can turn off the data when someone exceeds what
ever data you don't want them to go over. So if I have four phones on my plan
and 4 GB of data per month, I would split it as one gigabyte per phone. That
way if your teenagers use up there one gigabyte allotted amount watching
Netflix and YouTube, then you can turn off their data so that you have some of
your own. In fact what I have done is turned off the data for one or two days.
It is truly amazing that when I was growing up I would get grounded from the TV
for a week for certain things. Now I find that I'm telling my children they
will be grounded from data for a week if they don't behave.

Hi all,

I need some data plan advice. Currently, we have 2 lines with VZW, mine
is still unlimited data, the other line has just been downgraded to 2gb
data, because of an upgrade.

Well, to save some money, I'm considering revamping our plan, into one of
those share everything plans. The share 1gb of data, unlimited talk/text.
I did the account analysis over the last 6 Months, and if it is accurate,
we

seldom use 20mb of data each Month. January, for some reason, each line
used 21mb of data. With this information, sharing 1gb shouldn't be a
hardship.

Any thoughts here? Am I crazy to give up my unlimited data?

How about those of you that use your iPhone as gps? I'm guessing that
takes up a lot of data.

Lastly, doesn't VZW make it pretty easy to change our plan later on? Say
if we decide to go up to the 2gb plan. Don't worry, I know I won't get
the

unlimited data back. :)

Thanks for any guidance. If I am figuring this out correctly, it could be
a $25 savings each Month.

Re: Considering shrinking our data plan big time!

2013-03-08 Thread Alan Paganelli
The share plan is great for your cell carrier because you have a shared 1 GB
etc between all your devices. If you have teenagers in that plan, they use all
the data and when you need it, you find yourself buying another block of data.
Even if you go over by so much as a meg, you get charged for another chunk. In
my case, it's 2 GB chunks. So if I go a meg over, I automatically get charged
15 bucks for another 2 GB chunk because I'm not on a shared plan. It's the
only reason they want you to go that way. That having been said, you may run
into other charges as well. For example, if the second phone isn't using
enough data, you get hit with a non usage charge. Granted it's only a buck or
2 but it is in that effort for your carrier to maximize profits in an already
tight market.

Consumer Reports had an article on this very topic last month or the month
before that and it uses several kinds of situations to show how they maximize
profits for your carrier but in some situations it can help save. If it were
me, I'd lay hands on a back issue or two of CR and read it. It may be well
worth your time and trouble to locate it. If your a Bard user it won't be hard
to find it.

  Hi all,

I need some data plan advice. Currently, we have 2 lines with VZW, mine is
still unlimited data, the other line has just been downgraded to 2gb data,
because of an upgrade.

Well, to save some money, I'm considering revamping our plan, into one of
those share everything plans. The share 1gb of data, unlimited talk/text. I
did the account analysis over the last 6 Months, and if it is accurate, we
seldom use 20mb of data each Month. January, for some reason, each line used
21mb of data. With this information, sharing 1gb shouldn't be a hardship.

Any thoughts here? Am I crazy to give up my unlimited data?

How about those of you that use your iPhone as gps? I'm guessing that takes
up a lot of data.

Lastly, doesn't VZW make it pretty easy to change our plan later on? Say if
we decide to go up to the 2gb plan. Don't worry, I know I won't get the
unlimited data back. :)

Thanks for any guidance. If I am figuring this out correctly, it could be a
$25 savings each Month.

The general consensus here seems to be keeping that unlimited data.

Why do you all consider it so important, if you may not be a heavy data user?

I should consider Starting a side discussion about DataMan & VZW. The app
DataMan & VZW's count of my data, doesn't equal up. Color me confused :-)

Yes, if you buy your phone for full price, you can keep your unlimited data
plan through VZW or ATT. As far as mobile hotspot, VZW charges $20 per
month for 2GB if you're like me and have unlimited data. When I called to

But of course, mamma didn't raise no fool. I'll keep my unlimited data and

Re: Considering shrinking our data plan big time!

2013-03-08 Thread Kyle Seitz
My contract ended with Verizon yesterday. I still have unlimited data, 450
talk, and 200 MSGS per month for $81 and some change. I don't use much
data, but I just can't wrap my mind around going to a shared plan. The only
way I can keep my unlimited data is to buy an iPhone at full price, and
that's what I'll probably do. I don't need unlimited talk and text, so why
should I join a shared data plan which takes away my unlimited? It may
sound foolish to pay full price for a phone, but while I was trying to
decide what to do, I got service on a 5 through Sprint with unlimited data.
Sprint's data network is terrible in my opinion, and I got out of that
contract post haste! I live in a major Metro, and VZW is so far ahead of
Sprint it's not even funny. I'm glad I held on to my unlimited data through
VZW. I'll have to pay a lot to keep it, but to me, it's worth it.

This was going to be my line of argument, but you done such a good job of
it, I'll just agree and acknowledge the sense of it. Punative charging on
excess is like a licence to print money to them.
10c/mb is cheap, I just installed an app and it was 200mb; but a $/mb on
excess is morelikely and can be more. They doi t in £ here of course, but
still employ the same mechanisms to bleed the unwary.

My understanding is that once you get in to those shared data plans, you
can't get out. I could very well be wrong but the folks I've asked about it
from both VZ & AT&T have told me that once you're in, you're in. I think the
overall question I'd ask myself is this. Is the money I'd save really be
worth giving up my unlimited data? If you were to happen to go over at some
point, you'd really pay. So, to me it'd be worth just hanging on to the
unlimited data if the cost difference was 20-30 bucks a month just to A,
insure that I didn't go over & B. just to be able to have it if I wanted it
or needed it on a trip, your main internet connection out, etc. Now then, if
the cost savings were more than 30 bucks a month or money was really
becoming an issue. I perhaps would consider moving towards the shared plan.

I did the account analysis over the last 6 Months, and if it is accurate, we
seldom use 20mb of data each Month.

Don't worry, I know I won't get the
unlimited data back. :)

Thanks for any guidance. If I am figuring this out correctly, it could be
a $25 savings each Month.
